00:00:20.039 Just recently I had the chance to be at a conference, and something they did as part of the conference was pay tribute to someone who had achieved something significant. 00:00:20.760 --> 00:00:27.839 His name is Professor Graham Clark, so he's an Australian professor, and he is the man who invented the bionic ear. 00:00:27.839 --> 00:00:38.980 And as impressive as his achievement is, what I love about his story, and many stories of people who have done significant things, is where those stories begin. 00:00:39.939 --> 00:00:48.120 It's to think that to get to the point where he actually achieved his goal, there was a moment where that dream was birthed. 00:00:48.219 --> 00:00:53.120 And what you may not know about him is Graham Clark grew up with a father who was deaf. 00:00:53.119 --> 00:00:59.799 I actually found out this morning that one of our morning parishioners, Marie Farley, went to university with Graham and actually knows him. 00:01:00.259 --> 00:01:02.379 And she was giving me all sorts of extra details. 00:01:02.759 --> 00:01:09.439 So Graham Clark, growing up, had a father who was a pharmacist and had a chemist, and he was completely deaf. 00:01:10.120 --> 00:01:19.439 And the incredible challenges that his dad faced were what birthed a dream for Graham Clark to ultimately be able to deal with that issue and fix it. 00:01:19.439 --> 00:01:29.299 And it's a really exciting thing, I think, to not just see the finish line, but to see the journey that was taken to that greatness, to that significance. 00:01:29.299 --> 00:01:38.000 And I wonder if when you hear stories like that, or stories like we just read in Hebrews 11, if there's a part of you that thinks, 00:01:38.579 --> 00:01:40.799 I wish I had a vision like that. greatness is right in front of you, but you just haven't taken the steps to walk down it yet? 00:02:08.900 --> 00:02:13.420 Throughout Scripture, there are many, many people who have achieved great in Hebrews 11 is sometimes known as the Faith Hall of Fame. 00:02:25.599 --> 00:02:33.500 We think it's this list of kind of faith superheroes, people who just had incredibly massive and impressive faith. 00:02:33.760 --> 00:02:37.420 But actually, Hebrews 11 is not about them. 00:02:38.420 --> 00:02:39.560 It's about faith. 00:02:41.659 --> 00:02:43.680 And faith is about God. 00:02:43.680 --> 00:02:48.159 The superhero, if you like, in Hebrews 11 is God himself. 00:02:49.439 --> 00:02:52.379 The powerful one in Hebrews 11 is God himself. 00:02:52.860 --> 00:02:56.260 Faith is the thing that achieves significance for everyone in Hebrews 11. 00:02:56.599 --> 00:03:01.080 The same faith that all Christians have in the same God. 00:03:02.960 --> 00:03:05.840 See, faith isn't just about getting a ticket to heaven. 00:03:08.020 --> 00:03:09.500 Faith is a foundation. 00:03:09.500 --> 00:03:14.539 Faith is a power that God wants to unleash in your life. 00:03:14.620 --> 00:03:17.759 Not just an end point power or an end point destination. 00:03:18.139 --> 00:03:24.560 It's a foundation and a power that can be unleashed in us to achieve something significant in our lives now. how can you be a part of caring for people who are in need? 00:04:01.400 --> 00:04:04.719 How can you be a part of bringing hope to people who don't have it? 00:04:05.200 --> 00:04:06.520 What part can you play? 00:04:06.879 --> 00:04:11.159 And really the question behind that question is the one we're looking at tonight. 00:04:12.500 --> 00:04:18.019 The question is, what would your life and my life and our life together look like 00:04:18.019 --> 00:04:23.939 if we genuinely shared the faith of those who have gone before us? 00:04:23.939 --> 00:04:29.860 I mean, as we begin to dream about that possibility, 00:04:30.540 --> 00:04:34.920 dream about the possibility of God's power achieving something significant in us, 00:04:35.219 --> 00:04:37.740 we need to be clear on what we mean when we say faith. 00:04:37.800 --> 00:04:38.819 It's not a blank check. 00:04:40.180 --> 00:04:41.000 But what do we mean? 00:04:41.519 --> 00:04:43.920 First off, let's be clear on a few things that faith isn't. 00:04:44.639 --> 00:04:47.439 Firstly, faith is not blind and it's not baseless. 00:04:48.120 --> 00:04:49.399 I think I've said to you guys before, 00:04:49.399 --> 00:04:53.120 faith is a word that sometimes gets substituted for belief. 00:04:53.979 --> 00:04:56.620 And they're close, but they're not exactly the same thing. 00:04:57.599 --> 00:05:01.939 If I was to climb onto the roof of the church and decide that I wanted to fly, 00:05:02.339 --> 00:05:04.519 it doesn't matter how hard I flap my arms, 00:05:04.539 --> 00:05:06.819 if I jump off, I'm going to fall and I'm going to fall quickly. 00:05:07.239 --> 00:05:11.379 Because there's no basis for the belief that I can fly. 00:05:12.359 --> 00:05:15.439 Faith is actually about the thing that you believe, 00:05:15.519 --> 00:05:17.620 more than how much belief you have. 00:05:17.620 --> 00:05:21.000 See, desire is not a sufficient basis for faith. 00:05:21.079 --> 00:05:24.340 It doesn't matter how much I want to fly or how much I believe it, 00:05:24.959 --> 00:05:27.540 there's no basis for either of those things. 00:05:28.379 --> 00:05:33.980 The thing that I'm trusting in, the object, is what defines faith. 00:05:34.720 --> 00:05:37.819 So every time I'm driving in my car and I press on the brake, 00:05:38.319 --> 00:05:42.680 I'm placing my faith in the brakes to work and to stop me before I have a crash. 00:05:42.680 --> 00:05:49.360 But it's not my belief in the brakes that makes them work and helps me stop. 00:05:50.100 --> 00:05:51.980 It's the functionality of the brakes. 00:05:53.139 --> 00:05:57.780 It's actually their ability to stop the wheels in such a way that I don't hit another car. 00:05:58.139 --> 00:06:01.579 My belief in the brakes, if they're not functional, is irrelevant. 00:06:01.740 --> 00:06:02.780 I'm still going to crash. 00:06:03.340 --> 00:06:06.620 It's the functionality of the thing that I'm trusting, 00:06:07.019 --> 00:06:08.960 that I'm believing in, that I'm depending on. 00:06:08.959 --> 00:06:14.779 What matters when we talk about faith in any sphere of life is not so much the faith itself, 00:06:15.680 --> 00:06:18.039 but it's what we're placing our faith in. 00:06:18.560 --> 00:06:21.399 It's the object that's being trusted and depended on. 00:06:21.740 --> 00:06:25.939 And so for Christians, faith is not some vague, ethereal idea 00:06:25.939 --> 00:06:29.779 that gets kind of new content depending on what situation we're facing. 00:06:30.179 --> 00:06:33.359 You know, I have faith to fly, I have faith to jump high, whatever it is. 00:06:33.360 --> 00:06:37.280 Christian faith has specific content. 00:06:37.780 --> 00:06:39.220 It has a specific object. 00:06:39.540 --> 00:06:45.139 Faith, if it's Christian, is necessarily and firmly founded on the promise of God. 00:06:45.819 --> 00:06:48.080 Have a look in Hebrews 11 at verse 7. 00:06:48.080 --> 00:06:50.259 It says that, 00:06:50.259 --> 00:07:05.060 So Noah had faith in what? 00:07:05.699 --> 00:07:07.420 His desire to see the world flooded? 00:07:08.120 --> 00:07:11.120 His hope that God would judge the sinful people all around him? 00:07:11.180 --> 00:07:11.399 No. 00:07:12.159 --> 00:07:15.939 His faith is based on the fact that God warned him. 00:07:16.899 --> 00:07:18.039 God's word was there. 00:07:18.040 --> 00:07:22.480 God promised something and Noah believed that God would follow through. 00:07:23.040 --> 00:07:23.939 Now you've got to remember, 00:07:24.120 --> 00:07:27.100 this is just a snapshot of a whole story back in Genesis 6. 00:07:27.800 --> 00:07:30.379 Noah was ridiculed when he did this. 00:07:30.879 --> 00:07:34.600 He was building the biggest boat that the world has ever seen in the middle of nowhere 00:07:34.600 --> 00:07:37.080 with no means of getting it anywhere near water. 00:07:38.720 --> 00:07:40.140 Probably in the middle of a drought. 00:07:42.020 --> 00:07:43.180 And so people said, 00:07:43.259 --> 00:07:44.259 You've lost your mind, Noah. 00:07:45.180 --> 00:07:46.500 You are in all sorts. 00:07:46.500 --> 00:07:47.779 But he stood firm. 00:07:48.439 --> 00:07:53.100 He kept his faith because he was trusting something that was immovable. 00:07:54.819 --> 00:07:58.259 He was trusting the words of God who doesn't change. 00:07:59.420 --> 00:08:02.899 Faith is not a blind step in the dark full of optimistic hope. 00:08:03.860 --> 00:08:08.000 It's confidence based on the sure promise of God. 00:08:08.879 --> 00:08:10.899 So faith is not blind or baseless. 00:08:10.899 --> 00:08:13.620 The second thing faith is not is it's not seen. 00:08:14.639 --> 00:08:18.299 Hebrews 11 and verse 13 says, 00:08:18.679 --> 00:08:21.759 All these people were still living by faith when they died. 00:08:22.519 --> 00:08:24.259 They did not receive the things promised. 00:08:24.639 --> 00:08:27.779 They only saw them and welcomed them from a distance. 00:08:28.519 --> 00:08:30.259 Or verse 39 of chapter 11. 00:08:30.259 --> 00:08:47.460 All of these people, these heroes apparently of the faith, 00:08:47.720 --> 00:08:50.139 were still living by faith when they died. 00:08:50.139 --> 00:08:53.419 So they hadn't yet been given the things they were promised. 00:08:53.899 --> 00:08:56.379 The things that were shaping their whole life. 00:08:56.480 --> 00:08:58.399 The things that were motivating them to sacrifice, 00:08:58.879 --> 00:09:02.220 to suffer for following God with unwavering commitment. 00:09:04.460 --> 00:09:05.899 They didn't receive them. 00:09:07.799 --> 00:09:11.179 And that's because faith is by its nature forward looking. 00:09:12.639 --> 00:09:14.480 Faith is future oriented. 00:09:14.480 --> 00:09:17.360 It's about something that you don't yet have. 00:09:17.480 --> 00:09:19.820 Something that's just that little bit beyond your reach. 00:09:20.720 --> 00:09:21.820 And that's important. 00:09:23.000 --> 00:09:25.259 Because it reminds us as Christians, 00:09:26.360 --> 00:09:28.039 that stepping out in faith, 00:09:28.620 --> 00:09:31.940 is not just a way of kind of having a transaction 00:09:31.940 --> 00:09:33.759 to get something we want from God. 00:09:36.440 --> 00:09:40.399 Faith's not necessarily going to be about getting immediate gratification back 00:09:40.399 --> 00:09:42.440 because we've done something bold for God. 00:09:42.440 --> 00:09:45.820 The definition that Hebrews gives us is quite clear. 00:09:46.240 --> 00:09:47.500 In verse 1 of chapter 11. 00:09:48.380 --> 00:09:51.360 Now faith is being sure of what we hope for 00:09:51.360 --> 00:09:53.780 and certain of what we do not see. 00:09:53.960 --> 00:09:56.360 Now I have a slightly adjusted definition. 00:09:58.340 --> 00:10:01.700 Faith is a certain future hope 00:10:01.700 --> 00:10:05.260 that changes your uncertain present. 00:10:06.900 --> 00:10:09.260 Faith is a certain future hope 00:10:09.260 --> 00:10:11.520 that changes your uncertain present. 00:10:11.519 --> 00:10:13.899 See, faith brings perspective into situations 00:10:13.899 --> 00:10:15.500 that would otherwise be overwhelming. 00:10:17.139 --> 00:10:20.159 Faith has the power to take something that could be hopeless 00:10:20.159 --> 00:10:22.519 and give you a firm footing. 00:10:23.240 --> 00:10:25.860 Even though faith is future directed, 00:10:26.639 --> 00:10:29.679 we must understand that it has power now. 00:10:31.419 --> 00:10:33.579 It is about something we look forward to, 00:10:33.679 --> 00:10:56.320 --> 00:10:59.460 through which we perceived every circumstance that we faced, 00:10:59.720 --> 00:11:01.799 every relationship, every job, 00:11:01.799 --> 00:11:04.019 every engagement, every challenge, 00:11:04.179 --> 00:11:04.939 every obstacle? 00:11:07.120 --> 00:11:08.779 Because this chapter in Hebrews 00:11:08.779 --> 00:11:10.620 is called the Faith Hall of Fame 00:11:10.620 --> 00:11:13.519 because it's clearly a picture of significant life. 00:11:14.979 --> 00:11:17.620 These people did significant things. 00:11:17.620 --> 00:11:20.779 And it doesn't matter whether you're three or 23 or 103. 00:11:22.039 --> 00:11:23.960 Faith is the ingredient in this chapter. 00:11:25.039 --> 00:11:27.779 It's the thing common to every single person who's mentioned. 00:11:29.539 --> 00:11:33.039 And today, we need to lift our eyes 00:11:33.039 --> 00:11:35.220 and begin to dream. 00:11:36.200 --> 00:11:40.100 Begin to imagine just how incredible it might be and better than your plan for you. 00:11:53.820 --> 00:11:55.800 So as you begin to visualize that, 00:11:55.879 --> 00:11:58.379 let's unpack what the path might look like to get there. 00:11:59.080 --> 00:12:01.460 Four things that faith looks like from Hebrews 12. 00:12:03.159 --> 00:12:05.200 Therefore, since we are surrounded 00:12:05.200 --> 00:12:07.100 by such a great cloud of witnesses, 00:12:07.620 --> 00:12:09.759 let us throw off everything that hinders 00:12:09.759 --> 00:12:12.139 and the sin that so easily entangles, 00:12:12.139 --> 00:12:14.319 and let us run with perseverance 00:12:14.319 --> 00:12:16.139 the race marked out for us. 00:12:16.500 --> 00:12:18.659 Let us fix our eyes on Jesus, 00:12:19.179 --> 00:12:21.379 the author and perfecter of our faith, 00:12:21.799 --> 00:12:23.500 who for the joy set before him, 00:12:23.759 --> 00:12:26.039 endured the cross, scorning its shame, 00:12:26.500 --> 00:12:29.059 and sat down at the right hand of the throne of God. 00:12:29.699 --> 00:12:32.159 The first thing that faith looks like is surrounded. 00:12:32.980 --> 00:12:35.439 Faith is not a personal or isolated reality. 00:12:36.419 --> 00:12:38.639 Our Christian faith is a communal activity. 00:12:38.639 --> 00:12:41.939 One of the things that seeds our faith, 00:12:42.299 --> 00:12:43.819 or that strengthens our faith, 00:12:43.879 --> 00:12:45.480 or even gives birth to our faith, 00:12:45.960 --> 00:12:49.059 is actually seeing faith in the lives of other people. 00:12:50.299 --> 00:12:52.559 And not even necessarily the superheroes, 00:12:52.799 --> 00:12:54.059 like in chapter 11 here, 00:12:54.699 --> 00:12:57.860 but surrounded by brothers and sisters 00:12:57.860 --> 00:12:59.259 here in this community, 00:12:59.759 --> 00:13:02.419 who are living out faith in their jobs, 00:13:02.960 --> 00:13:04.139 in their families. 00:13:04.139 --> 00:13:08.100 People like the Fitzroy family 00:13:08.100 --> 00:13:09.600 in our 930 congregation, 00:13:10.259 --> 00:13:12.980 who dealt with a really difficult 00:13:12.980 --> 00:13:14.240 and challenging situation 00:13:14.240 --> 00:13:16.899 with the health of their second born son, 00:13:17.019 --> 00:13:18.779 and yet continued to trust God 00:13:18.779 --> 00:13:20.240 in spite of the uncertainty. 00:13:21.600 --> 00:13:23.980 Or living out faith like the Fitzpatricks, 00:13:24.080 --> 00:13:27.299 who moved to a suburb further away from us 00:13:27.299 --> 00:13:28.080 and less convenient, 00:13:28.299 --> 00:13:29.639 but convinced and convicted 00:13:29.639 --> 00:13:31.819 that this is where they wanted to serve. 00:13:31.820 --> 00:13:34.540 That this was the ministry 00:13:34.540 --> 00:13:35.879 that God was calling them to. 00:14:10.699 of what it looks like to persevere. 00:14:11.100 --> 00:14:12.399 He gives us brothers and sisters 00:14:12.399 --> 00:14:13.480 who bear with us. 00:14:15.039 --> 00:14:17.740 This is the point of chapter 11. 00:14:19.500 --> 00:14:21.379 All of these witnesses 00:14:21.379 --> 00:14:23.819 are on the same journey of faith. 00:14:23.820 --> 00:14:26.920 That's why they can be an --> 00:14:42.940 that we benefit from this community, 00:14:43.080 --> 00:14:44.980 but also that we seek to be a benefit 00:14:44.980 --> 00:14:45.960 to this community. 00:14:47.040 --> 00:14:48.740 Because faith has one goal, 00:14:49.220 --> 00:14:49.460 heaven. 00:14:49.460 --> 00:14:52.840 So it's uncompromising 00:14:52.840 --> 00:14:53.800 and undivided 00:14:53.800 --> 00:14:55.240 in its
