I hope it's been really worthwhile. It's an absolutely 00:00:59.359 --> 00:01:06.719 tremendous letter, one of the most personal ones that we find in the Bible. And yet, although it 00:01:06.719 --> 00:01:12.740 was, of course, first and foremost written to Timothy, it is very applicable to us as well. 00:01:13.260 --> 00:01:18.640 And talking about applying, that's always the challenge, isn't it? You go through a series, 00:01:18.640 --> 00:01:25.140 but what about the application? I do hope that we don't just rush on to the next letter, the next 00:01:25.140 --> 00:01:32.299 book, but that we will take time in what God has been speaking to us about as a church, but also as 00:01:32.299 --> 00:01:38.340 individuals that we will take time to apply. Well, this evening, the title is Keeping Your Head, 00:01:38.439 --> 00:01:45.040 which is not in the ESV, but is actually found in the NIV. But if you don't mind, I'm going to change it 00:01:45.040 --> 00:01:52.360 slightly. Because with you tonight, I want to think of the simple words, finishing well. 00:01:53.520 --> 00:02:01.140 Finishing well. Because I think that captures what Paul is trying to, in his final charge, 00:02:01.660 --> 00:02:07.920 tries to lay on Timothy's heart. And when I talk about finishing well, I had to think of a picture 00:02:07.920 --> 00:02:13.460 that I remember seeing in the newspaper a couple of years ago, of a beautiful replica of one of those 00:02:13.460 --> 00:02:19.320 17th century ships, one of those tall ships. I don't know if you can picture it. I can't remember 00:02:19.320 --> 00:02:26.000 if it was built either in the Netherlands or in England, in the UK itself. But it was built over 00:02:26.000 --> 00:02:32.300 several months, maybe even over a year, trying to use the same materials, trying to use the same 00:02:32.300 --> 00:02:39.040 techniques as they would have done back in the 17th century. And then they moved the ship, 00:02:39.039 --> 00:02:47.199 they sailed the ship all the way across to Australia, where it was to be docked and used as a museum. 00:02:48.019 --> 00:02:51.719 And of course, the building took a long time, the sailing took a long time, several weeks. 00:02:52.439 --> 00:03:01.340 But the headline in the newspaper was that the ship stranded three miles outside of Sydney Harbor. 00:03:02.699 --> 00:03:03.899 Can you imagine the feelings? 00:03:03.900 --> 00:03:14.740 The disappointment, the embarrassment, being so close, and yet so far. He's written a variety of books. He's Canadian originally. He's a professor in America. 00:03:39.240 --> 00:03:44.659 But one of the most personal things I heard him say during that conference was, and it's not the exact words, 00:03:44.719 --> 00:03:48.120 but basically that it was telling us who were sitting there as church leaders, 00:03:49.040 --> 00:03:56.740 that he was very conscious of the fact that he, and he was, I think at that time, about 60s, early 60s, 00:03:56.740 --> 00:04:04.439 he could still do something that would totally mess up all that he had been able to do for his God and for his King. 00:04:05.100 --> 00:04:08.560 He could have done something that would just totally discredit any books that he'd written. 00:04:10.180 --> 00:04:15.480 And he wanted to press upon us the need and the importance of finishing well. 00:04:16.000 --> 00:04:17.460 It's one thing to start well. 00:04:17.459 --> 00:04:24.739 And how exciting. I hope you experience that here in Brunsfield, of people starting off on that journey with Jesus. 00:04:25.079 --> 00:04:29.500 And how exciting it is to hear their testimony of how God has been very I sometimes get the impression that Protestant theology has at times moved away from works and have been shy to talk about works being part of the Christian life. 00:08:17.079 --> 00:08:20.620 Because, and this is very true, this is very much what the Bible teaches us. 00:08:20.740 --> 00:08:22.759 We are saved by faith alone. 00:08:24.579 --> 00:08:26.560 And it's true, let there be no always give yourselves fully to the work of the Lord, because you know that your labor in the Lord is not in vain. 00:09:26.879 --> 00:09:36.419 Now, I know in myself, I have a tendency to sometimes rely on what I do for God, that that will buy me his approval. 00:09:37.580 --> 00:09:41.759 So again, I also will try very much to rely on faith. 00:09:42.720 --> 00:09:51.580 But we mustn't be shy on understanding that part of finishing well is faith combined with works. 00:09:51.580 --> 00:09:59.520 And Paul says here in verse 5, that part of that doing should be the work of an evangelist. mentions in chapter 4, verse 2, 00:10:50.379 --> 00:10:53.600 that the ministry, referring to Timothy, is to preach the word. 00:10:55.740 --> 00:11:00.940 Which I think sometimes automatically makes us think of a pastor standing on a platform preaching. 00:11:00.940 --> 00:11:07.920 But actually, the word there, the literal word there, is proclaim the word. 00:11:09.500 --> 00:11:15.740 And some clever theologian from Canada, sorry, from Australia, totally different part of the world, 00:11:16.540 --> 00:11:21.940 from Australia, called Peter Adam, actually very wisely, I think, points out the fact that 00:11:21.940 --> 00:11:28.600 proclaiming the word, or the ministry of the word, is much more than just what happens on a Sunday morning or a Sunday evening. 00:11:28.600 --> 00:11:40.200 And then actually, it is the call of all of Christ's followers to also handle God's word correctly. 00:11:41.420 --> 00:11:47.259 In the sense that even in a home group setting, we
