for the benefit of those who were not here last week, or maybe if you don't know the story, 00:03:10.900 --> 00:03:18.240 in chapter three, God sent Jonah to preach to the city of Nineveh a message of judgment. 00:03:18.240 --> 00:03:25.340 In 40 days, God was going to destroy them, that city. 00:03:25.560 --> 00:03:31.819 But they took that as a warning, and they believed God. 00:03:32.479 --> 00:03:39.099 They turned from their sin, and they demonstrated their repentance, and God relented, it says. 00:03:40.140 --> 00:03:45.539 God chose to forgive them and not destroy them. 00:03:46.120 --> 00:03:47.120 Good news, right? 00:03:47.120 --> 00:03:50.599 Well, yes, to everyone but Jonah. 00:03:50.599 --> 00:03:57.659 Look now what happened after God was not going to kill the people of 00:04:51.840 Jonah went out of the city and sat to the east of the city and made a booth or a shelter, like a little lean-to, for himself there. 00:04:52.379 --> 00:04:57.860 He sat under it in the shade till he could see what would become of the city. 00:04:57.860 --> 00:05:09.100 Now the Lord appointed a plant and made it come up over Jonah that it might be a shade over his head to save him from his discomfort. 00:05:10.080 --> 00:05:14.360 So Jonah was exceedingly glad because of the plant. 00:05:15.360 --> 00:05:23.240 But when dawn came up the next day, God appointed a worm that attacked the plant so that it withered. 00:05:23.240 --> 00:05:32.560 When the sun rose, God appointed a scorching east wind, and the sun beat down on the head of Jonah so that he was faint. do is look at these questions because they're the kind of questions God asks of us. 00:06:30.859 --> 00:06:35.779 Number one, some of God's questions are designed to confront us over our sin. 00:10:38.859 instead of being happy about it, he's mad about it, he goes out, maybe on a hill, to look down and hope. 00:10:38.860 --> 00:10:44.740 Maybe God will destroy this city like he destroyed Sodom and Gomorrah. 00:10:45.100 --> 00:10:47.500 And I want to be here to see it. 00:10:48.200 --> 00:10:54.680 Can you imagine that heart, that lack of heart, that attitude that Jonah had? have just been thrilled, excited, and would have been happy to stay there 00:11:18.160 --> 00:11:21.940 and teach these people more about God because they didn't know much about him. 00:11:22.400 --> the mirror? 00:11:57.139 --> 00:12:06.159 You know, our selfishness and self-centeredness often makes us angry, doesn't it? 00:12:07.720 --> 00:12:12.379 And a lot of times when it's all about us, we 00:12:37.560 that 120,000 men, women, and children, the population of Nineveh, had been saved from destruction, 00:12:37.559 --> 00:12:40.199 but not Jonah. 00:12:41.559 --> 00:12:47.539 Jonah hated what God loved, the people of Nineveh. 00:12:48.899 --> 00:12:52.519 Do you ever hate anyone or anything that you know God loves? 00:12:55.259 --> 00:13:00.899 Are there some people in your life, you would have to admit, I know God loves them, but I hate them. 00:13:00.899 --> 00:13:11.259 There are some things about your life, things about people's life that you are related to, involved with. 00:13:13.000 --> 00:13:14.819 You just actually hate it. 00:13:16.500 --> 00:13:18.819 But you know, God is pleased by it. 00:13:20.299 --> 00:13:26.559 If you do, if you hate what God loves, you you to see that our selfishness and self-centeredness also makes us useless. 00:13:53.820 --> 00:14:02.540 Jonah's anger led him to quit serving God and become a spectator out on the hill. For an example, we have seen in chapter 1 that God hurled a great wind at Jonah's ship. 00:19:03.639 --> 00:19:10.500 Then the Lord appointed a great fish to swallow up Jonah, and he was cast into the sea. 00:19:10.500 --> 00:19:16.799 Here in chapter 4, God appointed a plant to shade Jonah. 00:19:17.799 --> 00:19:22.859 God appointed a worm that attacked the plant so that it withered. 00:19:23.819
