glossed over, 00:06:01.060 --> 00:06:04.519 it's just a strange thing. 00:06:04.620 --> 00:06:11.220 It's because of all the gifts that Jesus gives, the Holy Spirit is the greatest of his gifts. Spirit is not a power or an energy or an emanation of God. 00:07:34.160 --> 00:07:37.180 Listen to how Jesus talks about the Spirit in verse 16. 00:07:37.319 --> 00:07:37.540 He says, 00:07:37.540 --> 00:07:56.500 Jesus talks about the Spirit as a person. 00:07:56.500 --> 00:08:02.839 He's a living person that you can know or, as Jesus says, you cannot know. 00:08:04.139 --> 00:08:08.319 And He's a person that you can have a personal relationship with. 00:08:09.279 --> 00:08:14.060 The Spirit is not an impersonal force, an impersonal influence or a thing. 00:08:14.220 --> 00:08:18.720 Jesus says, I'm going to ask the Father, and He's going to give you another advocate. 00:08:18.839 --> 00:08:22.699 And we're going to get to that word advocate in a moment, but let's talk about the word another. 00:08:22.699 --> 00:08:27.539 Because there are two words in Greek that are translated another. 00:08:28.219 --> 00:08:30.379 One of them means another unlike. 00:08:31.459 --> 00:08:34.259 But this word here means another like. 00:08:35.159 --> 00:08:36.759 Another exactly like. 00:08:36.860 --> 00:08:38.720 Another of the same kind. 00:08:38.720 --> 00:08:44.080 In the Gospel of John, we've seen that Jesus is establishing His identity. 00:08:45.100 --> 00:08:50.820 And in John chapter 8, He said things like, before Abraham was, I am. 00:08:51.940 --> 00:08:55.899 In John chapter 10, He says, I and the Father are one. 00:08:57.060 --> 00:08:58.940 And Jesus is claiming to be God. 00:08:59.019 --> 00:09:00.700 He's claiming to be a divine person. 00:09:00.700 --> 00:09:10.240 And so when He says, I'm going to ask the Father to give you another advocate, He's saying the Father is going to give you another equally divine person. 00:09:11.200 --> 00:09:17.360 He's going to give you an infinitely and eternally divine person of the same kind, exactly like me. 00:09:17.879 --> 00:09:19.640 And exactly like the Father. 00:09:21.520 --> 00:09:24.220 Verse 17, Jesus goes on. 00:09:24.220 --> 00:09:32.680 And He says, He's the Spirit of truth, and the world cannot accept Him, because it neither sees Him nor knows Him, but you know Him, for He lives with you, and He'll be in you. 00:09:32.940 --> 00:09:35.000 And He says, I will not leave you as orphans. 00:09:35.279 --> 00:09:36.480 I will come to you. 00:09:38.000 --> 00:09:45.660 And this is kind of strange, because Jesus has been telling His disciples from the start of chapter 14 that He's actually going to be going away to the Father. 00:09:46.600 --> 00:09:46.779 Right? 00:09:46.800 --> 00:09:47.700 He's going to go away. 00:09:47.779 --> 00:09:49.500 He's going to be resurrected from the dead. 00:09:49.560 --> 00:09:52.399 He's going to ascend to the Father's throne. 00:09:52.399 --> 00:09:57.879 He's going away to that place where He's going to rule over the kingdom of God and over the nations. 00:09:59.539 --> 00:10:04.799 But Jesus also says, I will not leave you orphaned, but I will come to you. 00:10:04.840 --> 00:10:07.600 So He says, I'm going away from you, and I'm going to come to you. 00:10:08.519 --> 00:10:09.340 Wait, what? 00:10:10.559 --> 00:10:15.199 How can you be both going away from us and coming to us at the same time? 00:10:16.000 --> 00:10:18.960 Well, welcome to the wonderful, unique doctrine of the Trinity. 00:10:18.960 --> 00:10:27.960 Because even though I will leave you after my resurrection to ascend to my Father's throne, I'm not going to leave you as orphans. 00:10:28.060 --> 00:10:32.300 I'm going to come to you in the person of the Holy Spirit. 00:10:33.540 --> 00:10:37.540 The presence of the Holy Spirit is how I will come to you. 00:10:37.539 --> 00:10:42.459 And Jesus says in verse 23, He says, anyone who loves me will obey my teaching. 00:10:42.799 --> 00:10:49.039 My Father will love them, and we will come to them, and we will make our home with them. 00:10:49.839 --> 00:10:57.519 So the question is, how can the Father and the resurrected and living Jesus come to His disciples to make their home with them? 00:10:57.519 --> 00:11:01.559 And the answer is, the person of the Holy Spirit. 00:11:01.740 --> 00:11:15.679 If you have the Holy Spirit, then you have God at home with you, and you at home with God. 00:11:16.360 --> 00:11:24.319 The Holy Spirit is the way that Jesus and the Father continues to be with us, to abide with us, to dwell with us. 00:11:24.320 --> 00:11:30.240 Now, I don't have time to unpack the Trinity as if that were possible today. 00:11:31.260 --> 00:11:42.240 But suffice it to say that Christianity teaches, we don't have one God and one person who just takes on different forms at different times. 00:11:42.400 --> 00:11:49.100 Sometimes God is wearing the Father hat, and then sometimes He puts on the Son hat, and then sometimes He puts on the Spirit hat. 00:11:49.100 --> 00:11:53.060 And we also don't have three gods and three persons. 00:11:54.300 --> 00:12:01.139 Jesus is saying that there's one God in three persons who are equally divine, and they love each other supremely. 00:12:02.639 --> 00:12:08.379 And this is the mysterious and profound and blazing, brilliant heart of the Christian faith. 00:12:08.540 --> 00:12:11.980 Jesus is saying, when you get one, you get all three. 00:12:11.980 --> 00:12:23.460 In verse 19, Jesus says, because I live, because I'm going to be raised from the dead, you also will live. 00:12:24.500 --> 00:12:34.060 And He says in verse 20, on that day you will realize that I am in my Father, and you are in me, and I am in you. in your soul, and He will dwell right in the middle of your ordinary, everyday life. 00:12:48.439 --> 00:12:53.159 And so the question for us is, have you met this person, the Spirit? 00:12:54.239 --> Who's the Holy Spirit? 00:13:02.860 --> 00:13:05.740 Second question, what does the Holy Spirit do? 00:13:06.840 --> 00:13:08.159 What does the Holy Spirit do? 00:13:09.379 --> 00:13:18.360 Well, when this glorious person, the Holy Spirit, comes into your life, you become aware of His presence and His power. 00:13:19.519 --> 00:13:26.820 And He begins to do many wonderful things in you, and with you, and for you, and through you. 00:13:27.720 --> 00:13:30.120 And that's what Jesus is talking about in verse 16. 00:13:30.320 --> 00:13:31.560 Come back to verse 16. 00:13:31.559 --> 00:13:38.819 He says, I will ask the Father, and He will give you another advocate to help you and be with you forever. 00:13:39.859 --> 00:13:42.099 What does that word advocate mean? 00:13:43.279 --> 00:13:53.339 Well, if you look at other various versions of the Bible, they translate this word as counselor, or helper, or comforter, or advocate. 00:13:53.340 --> 00:13:55.700 And that means it's a multi-dimensional word. 00:13:56.340 --> 00:13:58.320 It's a deep and a rich word. 00:13:59.560 --> 00:14:02.639 The Greek word parakletos, the paraclete. 00:14:03.399 --> 00:14:04.620 There are two parts of that word. 00:14:04.780 --> 00:14:09.220 Para means to come alongside, like a paramedic. 00:14:09.780 --> 00:14:09.879 Right? 00:14:09.879 --> 00:14:12.059 It's a supporting word. 00:14:13.220 --> 00:14:16.120 And then there's kaleo, which means to call. 00:14:16.559 --> 00:14:17.000 Parakaleo. 00:14:17.080 --> 00:14:23.820 Kaleo means to call, or to summon, or to declare, or to argue like a lawyer. 00:14:23.960 --> 00:14:25.220 It's a confronting word. 00:14:25.820 --> 00:14:26.000 Right? 00:14:26.100 --> 00:14:31.620 And so if you've ever had a true friend, you know that they're both supporting you and confronting you. 00:14:31.720 --> 00:14:31.939 Amen? 00:14:32.940 --> 00:14:36.480 They come alongside you and they argue with you. 00:14:36.500 --> 00:14:38.220 If they don't argue with you, they're not a true friend. 00:14:39.320 --> 00:14:42.680 And Jesus is saying, look, the Holy Spirit is a true friend. 00:14:42.920 --> 00:14:45.640 He's better than all the friends you've ever had. 00:14:45.720 --> 00:14:47.500 Better than all your friends put together. 00:14:48.900 --> 00:14:55.700 And I want to just show you some of the things that this true friend, this parakletos, does in your life. 00:14:55.840 --> 00:14:58.500 Verse 17, Jesus calls him the spirit of truth. 00:14:58.500 --> 00:15:03.740 And in verse 25, he elaborates on that. 00:15:03.820 --> 00:15:06.360 He says, all this I've spoken to you while still with you. 00:15:06.919 --> 00:15:11.279 But the advocate, the Holy Spirit, whom the Father will send in my name, will teach you all 00:16:38.980 Jesus is saying that the Holy Spirit, our advocate, the spirit of truth, is going to come alongside of us. 00:16:39.059 --> 00:16:43.240 And he's going to argue with us through the words of the Bible. 00:16:44.559 --> 00:16:50.419 And that as he does that, he's going to turn the lights on in our minds and in our hearts. 00:16:51.240 --> 00:16:57.259 And he's going to illumine these truths that the Holy Spirit has given to us in the scriptures. 00:16:57.259 --> 00:17:01.600 And he's going to cause them to begin to make sense in our mind. 00:17:02.000 --> 00:17:04.619 And to it's just part of being alive. 00:17:46.119 --> 00:18:02.099 And in the same way, the inhale of reading the Bible and the exhale of praying to God is just what happens when the spirit of God comes in free from anything that binds them 00:20:44.219 --> 00:20:46.099 and anything that oppresses them. 00:20:46.099 --> 00:20:52.799 So that there's no wound in you that's so deep that the Holy Spirit alongside you 00:22:24.559 --> 00:22:27.039 and he's going to begin to argue with you 00:22:27.039 --> 00:22:30.399 like a good friend always does about how self-centered you are. 00:22:32.779 --> 00:22:36.339 He'll say, hey, Jonathan, you're being self-interested. 00:22:36.480 --> 00:22:37.799 You're being self-assertive. 00:22:38.799 --> 00:22:41.079 And he'll begin to convict you of your
