If you turn there, I'm going to summarize parts of this story and read other 00:00:30.120 --> 00:00:39.039 parts as we go through this morning. But I want us to think carefully about this story, 00:00:39.760 --> 00:00:44.700 especially when stories are familiar. We need to make sure that we're understanding what God's 00:00:44.700 --> 00:00:50.340 telling us, not just what we like to think. We need to understand the bigger story it's a part of 00:00:50.340 --> 00:00:57.760 so that we don't end up with a message this morning that is, be like David and you'll slay the giants 00:00:57.760 --> 00:01:04.200 in your life. Have you heard that message before? Yep, that's a common message out there. But it's 00:01:04.200 --> 00:01:12.640 a really confusing message to say, be like David when David commits murder and adultery. It doesn't 00:01:12.640 --> 00:01:19.640 work so well. Neither do we want one you've probably heard, the five smooth stones that we 00:01:19.640 --> 00:01:23.879 all need to defeat our enemies. Some of you have heard that one. There are lots of different lists 00:01:23.879 --> 00:01:28.859 of what those five stones are. It's really rough actually when they're not identified in the Bible. 00:01:29.420 --> 00:01:36.120 And David uses actually how many? Oh, only one of the five. So then the other four you just don't 00:01:36.120 --> 00:01:44.100 get to use anyway. So what's the story actually all about? Well, remember that the issue recently 00:01:44.100 --> 00:01:50.120 in the Bible story as we've been walking through it here in the Old Testament has been about the king. 00:01:50.920 --> 00:01:56.360 First, the lack of a king for God's people, right? They didn't have a king and so they were turning 00:01:56.360 --> 00:02:04.020 from God and doing whatever they wanted to do. And then last week, Bill Nash showed us so beautifully 00:02:04.019 --> 00:02:12.639 this idea of Saul, the king that they asked for, the king like the nations. And Saul was actually 00:02:12.639 --> 00:02:26.639 rejected by God as king in favor of a shepherd boy with a heart for God. God's people need a king, 00:02:26.900 --> 00:02:33.900 a hero, one to stand for them. In fact, that's exactly where the story of David and Goliath, 00:02:33.900 --> 00:02:42.500 opens, isn't it, at the beginning of 1 Samuel 17. The two countries are lined up like the boys and the 00:02:42.500 --> 00:02:50.140 girls that we had up here. There's Philistia on one mountain and all their army, and then there's 00:02:50.140 --> 00:02:57.360 Israel and all its army on the other mountain, a valley in between. Neither one of them foolish 00:02:57.360 --> 00:03:05.860 enough to wage an uphill battle, right? To go up the hill against the other army, but Philistia 00:03:05.860 --> 00:03:16.560 has a secret weapon. They have a champion. Goliath represents them. He strides out to the front, 00:03:16.560 --> 00:03:26.240 all nine feet, nine inches of him, no stool needed. His armor alone, the weight of a young man. 00:03:27.460 --> 00:03:34.099 And he defies the armies of Israel to send a champion out to fight him, winner take all, 00:03:34.620 --> 00:03:41.520 one on one. This morning, we need to think of ourselves in the front lines of God's people, 00:03:41.520 --> 00:03:49.240 seeing Goliath come forth and challenge us. Imagine that you're one of those soldiers. That's who we 00:03:49.240 --> 00:03:58.800 are in this story, okay? You're trembling with fear. You're despairing about the future for you and your 00:03:58.800 --> 00:04:05.719 family. You are staring certain death or slavery for the rest of your life right in the face. 00:04:05.719 --> 00:04:11.879 Each morning, you wake up and the music in the camp is the same song. 00:04:18.959 --> 00:04:28.860 It was, I need a hero just in Hebrew, okay? It was the same tune. That's not from the Bible. 00:04:28.860 --> 00:04:41.060 But they desperately need a hero. Where is Israel's hero? Their champion, their king. Where is Saul? 00:04:42.080 --> 00:04:46.360 He's a head taller than the rest of them. He's a mighty warrior. He's handsome. He's the king like 00:04:46.360 --> 00:04:57.139 the nations. And he is cowering somewhere in his royal tent. No wonder the rest of us are afraid. 00:04:57.139 --> 00:05:08.579 Listen to Goliath, verse 8. Why have you come out to draw up for battle? Am I not a Philistine? And are 00:05:08.579 --> 00:05:14.719 you not servants of Saul? Choose a man for yourselves and let him come down to me. 00:05:16.399 --> 00:05:24.319 And when Saul and all Israel heard these words of the Philistine, they were dismayed and greatly 00:05:24.319 --> 00:05:31.939 afraid. Even Goliath named Saul, right? He knows the one who should be coming out there to fight him. 00:05:33.379 --> 00:05:45.180 But Saul is dismayed and greatly afraid. We find out later that all Saul can hear and see is that giant 00:05:45.180 --> 00:05:53.939 yelling day after day, this imposing warrior. So he sees David and he thinks David is too small and 00:05:53.939 --> 00:06:03.680 too young. The only thing Saul thinks could possibly help is more armor, right? Here, take my armor. 00:06:03.800 --> 00:06:08.639 Saul's not going to go himself, but he'll try to loan David his weapons. That'll help you. That's what 00:06:08.639 --> 00:06:18.980 you need. There's no vision of his God at all, is there? The rest of the Israelites think, well, 00:06:18.980 --> 00:06:30.319 if Saul is scared, I've got no chance. So even though Saul offers them a wife and riches and a tax-free life, 00:06:31.040 --> 00:06:42.180 no one will risk it. Verse 24, all the men of Israel, when they saw the man, fled from him and were much 00:06:42.180 --> 00:06:52.759 afraid. They saw the man. They saw the man, the one mocking them and their God. They saw the big man. 00:06:53.400 --> 00:07:01.199 And that enemy seemed too much to overcome. That's all they could see. There's actually one other person 00:07:01.199 --> 00:07:07.480 in this story who sees the fight the same way that Saul and all the Israelites do. That's Goliath. 00:07:07.480 --> 00:07:17.780 It's just me against you, David. Unbelievable. Paraphrasing Goliath's words, he says, 00:07:18.300 --> 00:07:26.040 you little pipsqueak. My gods are going to crush you and your so-called God who's as weak as your toy 00:07:26.040 --> 00:07:32.700 slingshot you're carrying. This won't even be a fight. Just look at me and look at you. 00:07:32.699 --> 00:07:43.039 Notice that almost everyone in this story sees only what their eyes can see. 00:07:44.839 --> 00:07:55.959 And what's the result? Yahweh's people, full of fear, self-protective, shaking in their boots. 00:07:55.959 --> 00:07:59.419 This is the end. This is the end. I need a hero. 00:08:03.419 --> 00:08:09.740 Isn't that what we as God's people are often saying? When all we see is what our eyes can see. 00:08:11.680 --> 00:08:21.120 There's just no hope for my spouse, my kid, my co-worker, my friend. I've analyzed the way they're 00:08:21.120 --> 00:08:27.220 acting. I've seen it enough times. I've tried my best to help them change. There are just no other 00:08:27.220 --> 00:08:38.039 options. I give up. You know what that is? Practical atheism creeping into our hearts. 00:08:39.480 --> 00:08:46.200 Practical atheism showing up in our lives oftentimes. No notion of a living God active 00:08:46.200 --> 00:08:53.160 at work in my difficult situations. I quit hoping. I even quit praying. 00:08:55.640 --> 00:09:02.740 Pastor, I just can't stop talking that way. I never can quit looking at these images. 00:09:03.860 --> 00:09:08.180 I can't stop drinking earlier and earlier in the day just to get through the day. 00:09:08.180 --> 00:09:13.540 The temptation is too strong. I can't overcome it. I'm just going to quit trying. 00:09:16.200 --> 00:09:26.360 Those are practical atheism. I think the biggest form of practical atheism in our culture 00:09:26.360 --> 00:09:34.500 is giving up on the possibility that life with God might be true life. 00:09:36.200 --> 00:09:43.379 I just refuse to try anymore finding the good life apart from all the stuff I have. 00:09:43.379 --> 00:09:51.799 I love it. I won't be seen apart from it. No way could the good life involve my giving up control, 00:09:52.179 --> 00:10:00.039 my self-rule. That's what life is. I want to do what I want to do. That must be life. 00:10:02.679 --> 00:10:09.480 I mean, yeah, I'm at church. God might be a piece of my life, but the non-negotiable is this 00:10:09.480 --> 00:10:17.240 other relationship and enjoying it or ending it when I want, how I want, regardless of what God has to say 00:10:17.240 --> 00:10:18.600 about it. That's life. 00:10:18.600 --> 00:10:26.200 Practical atheism. I say I believe in God. 00:10:28.600 --> 00:10:37.180 But in my life, I'm a leader of God's people, just protecting my own wealth, my own comfort, 00:10:37.519 --> 00:10:42.580 my own reputation at the risk of God's glory and others' safety. 00:10:42.580 --> 00:10:51.700 Or I'm a member of God's people, but I'm cowering in fear at the enemies before me 00:10:51.700 --> 00:10:57.420 with no real thought to the impact of an actual God at work in my world. 00:10:57.500 --> 00:11:02.259 I'll sing about him, but I'm not going to expect him to show up on Monday. 00:11:02.259 --> 00:11:13.299 Have you felt that way when Goliath, the enemy of God, yells really loudly at you, looks really big 00:11:13.299 --> 00:11:19.299 in front of you? I'm outmatched. I have no real hero. I can't compete with him. 00:11:22.600 --> 00:11:26.600 It struck me this week how often I live that way. 00:11:26.600 --> 00:11:34.019 It struck me the one thing that sets David apart from that approach to life, 00:11:34.680 --> 00:11:41.779 from being just like everybody else in this story, is that he sees God involved, doesn't he? 00:11:42.960 --> 00:11:46.080 David's playing chess while they're playing checkers, we would say. 00:11:46.720 --> 00:11:49.600 They're doing algebra, but he's doing calculus. 00:11:50.320 --> 00:11:55.519 Seeing God's presence with him changes the math of the battle, doesn't it? 00:11:55.519 --> 00:11:57.360 It's like walking up the steps. 00:11:59.799 --> 00:12:06.460 It's also interesting to me that David is the only one not up at the battle lines all the time. 00:12:07.460 --> 00:12:09.299 I don't know if you feel like that's where you are. 00:12:09.799 --> 00:12:12.500 All you can see is this war going on around you. 00:12:12.639 --> 00:12:17.199 Is it possible that we need to take a step back, a step up, 00:12:17.600 --> 00:12:20.139 away from the smoke of the battle, 00:12:20.139 --> 00:12:23.819 to see God clearly, 00:12:24.580 --> 00:12:26.439 and to see God first? 00:12:27.379 --> 00:12:30.559 I want to urge you, without slowing down, 00:12:30.679 --> 00:12:34.699 without stepping back to account for God in your life, 00:12:34.699 --> 00:12:37.299 your fear may continue to grow. 00:12:37.899 --> 00:12:39.659 Your hope may wane. 00:12:39.819 --> 00:12:42.480 Your despair may take over 00:12:42.480 --> 00:12:45.439 because all you can see is what your eyes can see. 00:12:45.440 --> 00:12:50.800 But when David sees God in the equation, 00:12:50.960 --> 00:12:53.380 we see a completely new vision, 00:12:53.660 --> 00:12:56.360 a marked contrast between fearful Saul 00:12:56.360 --> 00:13:00.700 and the newly anointed leader of God's people. 00:13:00.860 --> 00:13:07.080 This story shows what the heart of a true champion of God's people looks like. 00:13:08.200 --> 00:13:11.340 We were told to look for this in the previous chapter 00:13:11.340 --> 00:13:14.840 when David's anointed as the next king of Israel. 00:13:15.060 --> 00:13:18.340 And God makes it clear that man looks at the outward appearance 00:13:18.340 --> 00:13:19.840 and picks Saul as leader, 00:13:20.700 --> 00:13:21.720 but God looks where? 00:13:23.580 --> 00:13:24.639 At the heart. 00:13:25.300 --> 00:13:29.620 David shows us here a zeal for God's honor, 00:13:30.460 --> 00:13:34.000 that we were all created to have this burning within us, 00:13:34.379 --> 00:13:35.860 this zeal, this passion. 00:13:36.000 --> 00:13:40.000 We see it especially when David talks to Goliath. 00:13:41.340 --> 00:13:44.920 You come to me with a sword and with a spear and with a javelin, 00:13:45.019 --> 00:13:48.360 but I come to you in the name of the Lord of hosts, 00:13:49.040 --> 00:13:52.500 the God of the armies of Israel whom you have defied. 00:13:52.759 --> 00:13:56.820 This day Yahweh will deliver you into my hand. 00:13:57.320 --> 00:14:01.000 Verse 47, all the earth may know there's a God in Israel, 00:14:01.180 --> 00:14:04.200 all this assembly may know that Yahweh saves, 00:14:04.480 --> 00:14:05.840 not with sword and spear, 00:14:05.840 --> 00:14:10.560 for the battle is Yahweh's and he will give you into my hand. 00:14:10.559 --> 00:14:12.239 Do you hear what David wants to defend? 00:14:12.859 --> 00:14:14.119 Is it his own reputation? 00:14:14.839 --> 00:14:16.719 All right, Goliath, I'm not as weak as you think. 00:14:17.279 --> 00:14:18.699 Let me tell you what I've done. 00:14:20.500 --> 00:14:22.439 No, it's God's reputation. 00:14:23.819 --> 00:14:25.739 It's not even his personal security. 00:14:26.059 --> 00:14:27.919 It's the safety of God's people. 00:14:29.439 --> 00:14:31.279 David wants everyone in Israel, 00:14:31.279 --> 00:14:33.419 in fact, he wants everyone in the nations 00:14:33.419 --> 00:14:36.679 to know how great Yahweh is. 00:14:37.039 --> 00:14:39.459 And that's what drives David, isn't it? 00:14:40.979 --> 00:14:43.919 And it drives him to love God's people. 00:14:45.139 --> 00:14:46.879 He's willing to stand in their place. 00:14:46.979 --> 00:14:47.779 No one else is. 00:14:48.519 --> 00:14:50.039 He's willing to represent them, 00:14:50.159 --> 00:14:51.639 even in danger, 00:14:51.759 --> 00:14:54.319 even when it seems certain he's gonna lose his life. 00:14:54.899 --> 00:14:57.419 He wants to remove the reproach 00:14:57.419 --> 00:15:07.799 so no one else's heart need to fail. 00:15:09.299 --> 00:15:10.500 He'll fight the giant 00:15:10.500 --> 00:15:12.539 on behalf of the fearful, 00:15:12.919 --> 00:15:13.500 the helpless, 00:15:13.839 --> 00:15:14.579 the desperate, 00:15:14.719 --> 00:15:16.419 who cannot fight for themselves 00:15:16.419 --> 00:15:18.459 day after day after day 00:15:18.459 --> 00:15:19.519 and they're not getting anywhere 00:15:19.519 --> 00:15:20.939 and no one will stand up 00:15:20.939 --> 00:15:22.099 except David will. 00:15:23.740 --> 00:15:25.039 Zeal for God's honor, restoring 00:17:15.779 --> 00:17:17.559 and rescuing us, 00:17:17.920 --> 00:17:18.920 how does God 00:17:18.920 --> 00:17:20.420 restore relationship 00:17:20.420 --> 00:17:21.460 with his people 00:17:21.460 --> 00:17:23.379 through a king 00:17:23.379 --> 00:17:25.519 with a heart like this? 00:17:26.500 --> 00:17:27.099 Stay tuned. 00:17:28.480 --> 00:17:29.660 Here's the famous part 00:17:29.660 --> 00:17:30.319 of this story. 00:17:32.339 --> 00:17:33.960 Goliath actually helps David 00:17:33.960 --> 00:17:34.660 make clear 00:17:34.660 --> 00:17:35.619 that this is indeed 00:17:35.619 --> 00:17:36.980 a battle of champions, 00:17:37.399 --> 00:17:38.180 but even more, 00:17:38.259 --> 00:17:40.139 it's a contest between gods. 00:17:42.779 --> 00:17:43.639 That's part of why 00:17:43.639 --> 00:17:45.480 they often did this champion thing 00:17:45.480 --> 00:17:46.200 in these days. 00:17:46.920 --> 00:17:47.759 They saw wars 00:17:47.759 --> 00:17:48.680 between nations 00:17:48.680 --> 00:17:50.140 as actually battles 00:17:50.140 --> 00:17:51.799 between the nation's gods, 00:17:52.160 --> 00:17:54.059 and so if one-on-one 00:17:54.059 --> 00:17:54.720
