And this week, just the other day, I read part of an interview, maybe all of the 00:02:34.400 --> 00:02:41.840 interview, at least as it was published, with one of the voice actresses, the main star, voice actress 00:02:41.840 --> 00:02:52.400 star for the huge hit movie, the K-pop Demon Hunters. And the person who played Rumi, her name is Arden Cho. 00:02:52.400 --> 00:02:54.719 I don't know if I've pronounced that correctly. She gave an interview. 00:02:54.719 --> 00:02:59.759 And one of the things which was really interesting about the interview, lots of things were interesting, 00:02:59.759 --> 00:03:06.879 but one of the things that was interesting is that she said that hopefully this movie would 00:03:06.879 --> 00:03:14.879 hopefully really help people who feel unseen. And she implied that she herself felt unseen to be seen. 00:03:15.439 --> 00:03:19.919 That that's one of the benefits of this movie, that those who are unseen like her can be seen. 00:03:19.919 --> 00:03:28.879 And especially for young women who are of Asian descent, and in particular, because she's Korean, 00:03:28.879 --> 00:03:36.639 for Korean young women and girls to actually feel seen. And I thought, wow, like, 00:03:38.159 --> 00:03:43.919 I mean, here she is being interviewed, and I'm reading about it. And I'm not saying this is a put down. 00:03:43.919 --> 00:03:49.679 I don't take, sorry, if I said anything to imply that, I am not saying that whatsoever. What I am saying is this. 00:03:50.319 --> 00:03:54.799 It is a very common human problem of not feeling that you're seen. 00:03:56.000 --> 00:04:02.319 Of going through your day and your week and your month and your years and your decade feeling completely and utterly unseen. 00:04:02.879 --> 00:04:06.639 And she gave voice to that very, I think, very well and very articulately. 00:04:06.639 --> 00:04:15.199 And so that the Bible text that we're going to look at today has some very profound and helpful and hopeful things to say about that phenomenon. 00:04:15.759 --> 00:04:17.839 For those of us who feel unseen. 00:04:18.479 --> 00:04:23.680 And feeling unseen often goes along with another experience that people struggle with. 00:04:23.680 --> 00:04:24.959 And that's the feeling of shame. 00:04:26.959 --> 00:04:31.120 That often we feel a deep sense of shame. 00:04:31.120 --> 00:04:35.120 And that means that there's something fundamentally wrong with us. 00:04:35.120 --> 00:04:40.000 There's something, it's not that we do wrong things, but that there's something that we're wrong. 00:04:40.000 --> 00:04:44.879 It's not that we do some types of things that break relationships, but that we're broken. 00:04:44.879 --> 00:04:52.879 It's not just that we do some things occasionally that push people away, but there's something fundamentally about us that pushes us away. 00:04:52.879 --> 00:04:57.600 Where makes us, makes the me, the you, unseen. 00:04:57.600 --> 00:05:00.719 And we feel deep shame around that. 00:05:00.719 --> 00:05:09.319 And this Bible text that we're going to look at actually has some very profound and helpful things for those of us struggling with feeling seen. 00:05:09.959 --> 00:05:14.120 And struggling, or maybe not struggling at Luke chapter 2, verses 8 to 14. 00:05:31.000 --> 00:05:33.279 Luke chapter 2, verses 8 to 14. 00:05:34.139 --> 00:05:40.920 And just as you sort of turn to that, what we're doing is during this season of Advent, the four Sundays before Christmas, 00:05:41.540 --> 00:05:45.180 we're looking at four songs of the Savior in the Gospel of Luke. 00:05:45.639 --> 00:05:51.079 Two of the songs of the Savior are before his birth, and two of the songs of the Savior are after his birth. 00:05:51.079 --> 00:05:53.939 So we looked at Mary's song, the Magnificat. 00:05:54.039 --> 00:05:56.599 Then we looked at Zechariah's song, the Benedictus. 00:05:57.000 --> 00:06:02.859 Today we look at the Gloria in Excelsis, which is the song the angels sang after the birth of Jesus. 00:06:03.399 --> 00:06:12.060 And then next Sunday we'll look at the Nunc Dimittis, which is the song or the poetry that Simeon prayed over the baby Jesus when he came into the temple. 00:06:12.060 --> 00:06:20.280 And so in the flow of this, and on Christmas Eve, by the way, we'll look at the text that goes just before this, the actual account of the birth of Jesus. 00:06:20.720 --> 00:06:24.300 But this takes place just after the birth of Jesus that same evening. 00:06:24.300 --> 00:06:28.280 So here's what happens, and it goes like this. 00:06:29.819 --> 00:06:33.040 And in the same region, it's about a kilometer or two away. 00:06:33.360 --> 00:06:39.939 So in the same region, probably a couple kilometers away, there were shepherds out in the field keeping watch over their flock by night. pause here. 00:06:49.780 --> 00:06:57.840 This is a very shocking development, and it's because it's so familiar to Christians that we've lost the sense of shock. 00:06:58.340 --> 00:07:05.399 So the first thing about that, first thing to maybe get your mind around it, and I'm a guy, so I can say this. 00:07:05.399 --> 00:07:17.419 But when you're thinking of the shepherds, okay, they probably weren't writing love poetry or working on their Hebrew grammar or praying. 00:07:18.399 --> 00:07:23.139 Think working class guys out in the bush with no women. 00:07:25.019 --> 00:07:29.659 Young working class guys out in the bush with no women. 00:07:29.660 --> 00:07:41.660 Now, for married people, I hope I didn't introduce an awkward question from your wife as to what it might have been like when you were a young man in the bush with no women spending time. 00:07:41.900 --> 00:07:44.960 But as I said, it probably wasn't writing poetry. 00:07:45.280 --> 00:07:46.900 They probably weren't sharing their feelings. 00:07:48.700 --> 00:07:50.520 They were being young guys out in the bush. 00:07:51.360 --> 00:07:57.360 And maybe even some little guys acting like young guys out in the field away from women from several days. 00:07:57.360 --> 00:08:02.500 And so they're doing whatever young guys would do in that type of situation. 00:08:02.500 --> 00:08:06.259 And all of a sudden, an angel shows up. 00:08:07.680 --> 00:08:11.340 And you can see all sorts of reasons why they might be filled with fear. 00:08:12.160 --> 00:08:17.300 They might be wondering what the angel just overheard, amongst other things, or what they witnessed before they noticed it. 00:08:17.319 --> 00:08:18.720 They would have noticed the angel right away. 00:08:19.319 --> 00:08:21.639 But one of the things about that, then, is if you think about it, 00:08:21.639 --> 00:08:27.139 most of us probably, if we were giving God advice as to who the angel should show up to for this important announcement, 00:08:27.259 --> 00:08:28.759 would not have picked these guys. 00:08:29.639 --> 00:08:31.139 In fact, if anything, we might have said, 00:08:31.579 --> 00:08:36.500 God, go to their wives and girlfriends and daughters and sisters, not them. 00:08:36.819 --> 00:08:37.899 They're way more worthy. 00:08:38.379 --> 00:08:40.879 But we wouldn't have picked these guys out in the field. 00:08:41.039 --> 00:08:42.539 But the angel picks them. 00:08:43.279 --> 00:08:50.220 And right off the bat, you're seeing more and more aspects of how this is a profoundly biblical and Christian
