And as we follow Jesus together, 00:00:25.440 --> 00:00:32.120 we become convinced there's no one so good, they don't need God's grace, and no one so bad that they can't have it, 00:00:32.120 --> 00:00:37.520 which is why we come back week after week to hear what God has to say to us in His Word, 00:00:37.600 --> 00:00:43.939 because we believe that God has something to say to everyone. He has something to say to people who've been Christians their entire lives. 00:00:44.320 --> 00:00:48.159 He has something to say to people who've been Christians maybe a few months or a few weeks. 00:00:48.380 --> 00:00:52.000 And He has something to say to people who would not consider themselves Christians, 00:00:52.000 --> 00:00:55.859 people who have questions or doubts or objections to Christianity. 00:00:56.820 --> 00:00:59.859 And so we come now, we're continuing our series in the Gospel of Mark. 00:01:00.280 --> 00:01:05.739 You'll remember that the Gospels tell the story of Jesus and His life and His death and His resurrection. 00:01:06.120 --> 00:01:09.500 And as we've been coming at the Gospels, we've been asking two simple questions. 00:01:09.640 --> 00:01:14.760 Question one, who is Jesus? And question two, how do we respond to Him? 00:01:15.480 --> 00:01:21.460 Last week, we looked at the story about fasting and new wine and old wineskins, 00:01:21.459 --> 00:01:26.399 and new cloth on old garments, and we saw the newness and the joy and the celebration of the Gospel. 00:01:26.539 --> 00:01:30.139 Jesus came in confrontation with the religious leaders, the scribes and the Pharisees. 00:01:30.579 --> 00:01:34.280 And this morning, we're going to see another confrontation that Jesus has in this series, 00:01:34.739 --> 00:01:36.859 again with the religious leaders of Judaism. 00:01:37.859 --> 00:01:42.899 This time, however, as we've looked at already this morning when it comes to the Fourth Commandment, 00:01:42.979 --> 00:01:45.539 what it means to honor the Sabbath day. 00:01:45.839 --> 00:01:49.579 And so we're going to look at what Jesus has to teach us about that, and we're going to jump right in. 00:01:49.579 --> 00:01:56.140 I invite you to turn with me. we read now Mark 2, starting in verse 23. 00:02:13.479 --> 00:02:21.000 One Sabbath, He was going through the grain fields, and as they made their way, His disciples began to pluck heads of grain. 00:04:53.639 and suddenly she starts having contractions. 00:04:54.639 --> 00:04:56.679 And quickly we realize this is not a drill. 00:04:57.299 --> 00:05:00.159 It is time to get to the hospital as quickly as possible. 00:05:00.299 --> 00:05:01.500 So I'm in the middle of the sermon, 00:05:02.039 --> 00:05:03.899 but her husband and her head out, 00:05:04.079 --> 00:05:05.379 and they're on the way to the hospital. 00:05:05.500 --> 00:05:06.479 They get on to I-25. 00:05:07.359 --> 00:05:10.359 Her husband, knowing how important it is to get her to the hospital quickly, 00:05:10.619 --> 00:05:12.159 and knowing that it's Sunday morning, 00:05:12.279 --> 00:05:13.259 and there's not a lot of traffic, 00:05:13.399 --> 00:05:14.879 decides to put the pedal to the metal. 00:05:14.879 --> 00:05:19.100 And so, in this section of I-25, right, it's 65, 00:05:19.339 --> 00:05:21.100 but let's say he's going 75. 00:05:21.879 --> 00:05:22.920 Maybe he's going 80. 00:05:23.600 --> 00:05:24.899 Okay, and we understand why, right? 00:05:24.939 --> 00:05:28.120 His goal is to get his wife to the hospital as quickly as possible. 00:05:28.800 --> 00:05:31.519 Now, it also happens that it is near the end of the month, 00:05:32.019 --> 00:05:34.680 and there's a lot of police that are out on Sunday morning 00:05:34.680 --> 00:05:36.120 looking for someone to pull over. 00:05:36.659 --> 00:05:36.839 Okay? 00:05:37.360 --> 00:05:41.040 So, this husband ends up being pulled over by a police officer. 00:05:41.540 --> 00:05:43.639 Police officer comes, and he tries to explain, 00:05:43.639 --> 00:05:46.219 look, we are on our way to the hospital. 00:05:46.639 --> 00:05:48.159 My wife is in the middle of giving birth. 00:05:48.240 --> 00:05:50.019 We need to get there as quickly as possible. 00:05:51.060 --> 00:05:53.500 Police officer has several options at this point, right? 00:05:54.519 --> 00:05:56.860 Option one, he could let them go. 00:05:57.500 --> 00:06:00.039 Okay, I understand this is a difficult situation. 00:06:00.180 --> 00:06:01.199 I understand what's happening here. 00:06:01.279 --> 00:06:02.120 Proceed to the hospital. 00:06:02.860 --> 00:06:04.860 Option two, he gives the husband a ticket. 00:06:06.079 --> 00:06:06.899 If he's going over 80, 00:06:06.939 --> 00:06:09.519 he makes sure he gives him a ticket for reckless driving. 00:06:11.019 --> 00:06:12.120 What's the right choice? 00:06:12.120 --> 00:06:15.519 Trick question. 00:06:15.620 --> 00:06:16.660 Neither of those are correct. 00:06:17.259 --> 00:06:21.259 The correct response for the police officer is to turn on his lights 00:06:21.259 --> 00:06:24.120 and tell them that all they need to do is follow him. 00:06:24.579 --> 00:06:29.100 And then he should clear traffic for them going 85 or 90 miles per hour 00:06:29.100 --> 00:06:30.519 as long as it's safe 00:06:30.519 --> 00:06:36.060 so that this man and his wife can get to the hospital as quickly as possible. 00:06:36.759 --> 00:06:37.399 Why? 00:06:37.399 --> 00:06:42.359 The reason is that laws are not arbitrary. 00:06:42.620 --> 00:06:43.539 As one man has said, 00:06:43.620 --> 00:06:47.459 the law reflects the heart or the values of the lawgiver. 00:06:48.019 --> 00:06:50.299 What is the purpose of the speed limit? 00:06:50.439 --> 00:06:52.500 What is the heart or the value behind it? 00:06:52.679 --> 00:06:54.719 The heart and value behind the speed limit 00:06:54.719 --> 00:06:57.000 is that we would honor and protect life. 00:06:57.000 --> 00:07:03.420 If the police officer in this situation wants to honor and protect life, 00:07:03.600 --> 00:07:06.040 he honors that greater principle 00:07:06.040 --> 00:07:10.720 by ignoring the minor regulation and honoring the greater value. 00:07:11.420 --> 00:07:11.560 Okay? 00:07:11.779 --> 00:07:14.779 He understands that the law does not exist for itself. 00:07:14.860 --> 00:07:16.259 It has a purpose and and they end up to the hospital as quickly as possible. 00:07:26.020 --> 00:07:27.060 Now on the one hand, 00:07:27.140 --> 00:07:28.160 this is a thought experiment. 00:07:28.400 --> 00:07:29.180 On he's driving his wife, 00:07:40.160 --> 00:07:40.800 his pregnant wife, 00:07:40.819 --> 00:07:41.439 to the hospital. 00:07:41.920 --> 00:07:43.540 And there's a variety of responses. 00:07:43.700 --> 00:07:44.400 If you look at it, 00:07:44.460 --> 00:07:46.480 most of them that I could find, 00:07:46.540 --> 00:07:47.520 the husband gets a ticket. 00:07:48.480 --> 00:07:48.819 In fact, 00:07:48.840 --> 00:07:49.520 in one situation, 00:07:49.620 --> 00:07:50.800 the police officer told him, 00:07:50.800 --> 00:07:52.860 your wife will be giving birth to the child. 00:07:53.139 --> 00:07:54.040 You will be in jail. 00:07:55.819 --> 00:07:57.699 There was one instance though, 00:07:57.800 --> 00:07:59.240 in Kentucky actually this year, 00:07:59.400 --> 00:08:01.020 this summer, 00:08:01.500 --> 00:08:03.160 police officer turned on his lights 00:08:03.160 --> 00:08:04.040 and just said, 00:08:04.139 --> 00:08:04.560 follow me. 00:08:04.580 --> 00:08:06.259 And he escorted them to the hospital. 00:08:07.160 --> 00:08:07.379 Right? 00:08:07.439 --> 00:08:10.199 Because he understands that there are some things 00:08:10.199 --> 00:08:12.860 that are greater than certain laws. 00:08:12.900 --> 00:08:15.220 That's the situation we're encountering here 00:08:15.220 --> 00:08:16.680 in this passage, 00:08:16.759 --> 00:08:18.340 in the illustration that Jesus uses. 00:08:18.340 --> 00:08:20.780 We find him and his disciples in verse 23, 00:08:21.040 --> 00:08:22.579 they're traveling somewhere. 00:08:22.680 --> 00:08:23.560 We're not told where. 00:08:23.680 --> 00:08:25.480 And apparently they're hungry as they're going. 00:08:25.579 --> 00:08:26.819 They're walking through a field. 00:08:27.020 --> 00:08:29.400 And so they decide to feed themselves. 00:08:29.920 --> 00:08:31.180 Now this was actually allowed, 00:08:31.280 --> 00:08:32.659 according to Old Testament law. 00:08:33.419 --> 00:08:34.659 If you were going through a field, 00:08:35.000 --> 00:08:36.740 you were allowed to pick grains off the top. 00:08:36.820 --> 00:08:38.700 This is stated explicitly in Deuteronomy. 00:08:38.799 --> 00:08:39.779 So they're not stealing. 00:08:40.240 --> 00:08:41.860 They're doing something that's allowed. 00:08:42.120 --> 00:08:44.680 It just happens they're doing the right thing 00:08:44.680 --> 00:08:46.019 on the wrong day. 00:09:00.699 They're breaking the law. 00:09:01.100 --> 00:09:03.740 Now there's some debate in this situation 00:09:03.740 --> 00:09:05.659 about whether this is actually forbidden 00:09:05.659 --> 00:09:06.519 by the Old Testament, 00:09:06.639 --> 00:09:08.179 whether this is something that the scribes 00:09:08.179 --> 00:09:09.299 and the Pharisees made up, 00:09:09.659 --> 00:09:11.159 whether it's a law that they added. 00:09:11.600 --> 00:09:13.579 We're not going to resolve that debate this morning. 00:09:13.740 --> 00:09:16.399 All we know is that Jesus' reaction here, 00:09:16.439 --> 00:09:19.219 his response assumes that the Pharisees are correct. 00:09:19.799 --> 00:09:21.120 Jesus responds to them 00:09:21.120 --> 00:09:24.939 as if his disciples actually are breaking the law. 00:09:26.000 --> 00:09:28.199 And he gives an example here, 00:09:28.600 --> 00:09:30.939 the example that we read earlier this morning 00:09:30.939 --> 00:09:32.600 from 1 Samuel chapter 21. 00:09:32.799 --> 00:09:33.779 He says, don't you remember? 00:09:34.219 --> 00:09:35.399 He's engaging, by the way, 00:09:35.399 --> 00:09:36.939 in a type of religious debate here. 00:09:36.939 --> 00:09:39.220 He's meeting the Pharisees on their own turf. 00:09:39.220 --> 00:09:42.019 He knows they like to talk Bible text, 00:09:42.100 --> 00:09:43.840 so he's going to talk a Bible text to them. 00:09:44.340 --> 00:09:45.019 And he reminds them, 00:09:45.120 --> 00:09:47.360 when the great king of Israel, David, was traveling 00:09:47.360 --> 00:09:49.340 and he was in need and hungry, 00:09:49.759 --> 00:09:51.240 and his men with him, 00:09:51.580 --> 00:09:53.259 they also broke a rule. 00:09:54.500 --> 00:09:57.100 The rule that they broke was that they took food 00:09:57.100 --> 00:09:58.940 that was supposed to be only for the priests. 00:09:59.440 --> 00:10:00.779 David, of course, not a priest. 00:10:00.840 --> 00:10:01.420 He's a king. 00:10:02.340 --> 00:10:05.180 And it's not stated explicitly in 1 Samuel 21, 00:10:05.180 --> 00:10:06.660 but it's implied or believed 00:10:06.660 --> 00:10:08.600 that that was also on a Sabbath day. 00:10:09.779 --> 00:10:12.680 And so he points them to this similar situation. 00:10:12.860 --> 00:10:13.960 Look, you're upset about this, 00:10:14.040 --> 00:10:16.940 but David, the great king, also did this. 00:10:17.860 --> 00:10:21.139 And then he clarifies for them this principle. 00:10:21.279 --> 00:10:23.300 Yeah, technically the law was broken. 00:10:23.420 --> 00:10:24.399 You are needs to get to the hospital. 00:11:22.879 --> 00:11:24.039 Yes, I know. 00:11:24.120 --> 00:11:24.879 In your minds, 00:11:24.980 --> 00:11:26.500 technically they're reaping on the Sabbath. 00:11:26.500 --> 00:11:29.639 And they are being given life. 00:11:29.740 --> 00:11:30.740 They're being sustained 00:11:30.740 --> 00:11:32.500 by what they're doing, 00:11:33.240 --> 00:11:35.100 picking these heads of grain. 00:11:36.679 --> 00:11:38.100 And then chapter 3, verse 4, 00:11:38.179 --> 00:11:38.820 this next story. 00:11:38.899 --> 00:11:40.259 We have these two twin stories 00:11:40.259 --> 00:11:40.960 that go together. 00:11:41.480 --> 00:11:43.019 Jesus clarifies, verse 4, 00:11:43.139 --> 00:11:44.259 what it means that the Sabbath 00:11:44.259 --> 00:11:45.120 was made for man, 00:11:45.200 --> 00:11:46.139 not man for the Sabbath. 00:11:46.779 --> 00:11:47.639 He tells them, 00:11:49.259 --> 00:11:50.440 is it lawful on the Sabbath 00:11:50.440 --> 00:11:52.039 to do good or to do harm, 00:11:52.419 --> 00:11:54.700 to save life or to kill? 00:11:54.700 --> 00:11:56.520 In other words, 00:11:56.620 --> 00:11:58.480 the Sabbath has a purpose. risk, 00:12:46.819 --> 00:12:48.600 mandated that every soldier 00:12:48.600 --> 00:12:49.819 leaving a secure base 00:12:49.819 --> 00:12:51.720 in both Afghanistan and Iraq 00:12:51.720 --> 00:12:52.639 wear body armor. 00:12:53.820 --> 00:12:55.139 Sounds like a great idea, right? 00:12:55.820 --> 00:12:56.420 Everyone's safe. 00:12:56.500 --> 00:12:57.460 Everyone wears body armor.
