It is the gospel of God that we preach. It's good 00:00:34.780 --> 00:00:41.079 news, Christianity primarily concerning God. God is the subject of every statement in this 00:00:41.079 --> 00:00:47.820 sermon in Acts 17. But almost as important is for us to have a proper understanding of 00:00:47.820 --> 00:00:55.299 man, men and women, human beings. What is man? What is woman? 00:00:56.500 --> 00:01:05.099 Why do you matter? What is it about you, about human beings that is different? And there 00:01:05.099 --> 00:01:12.439 are three things about human beings that all begin with D, alright? That we're going to 00:01:12.439 --> 00:01:21.180 see. The first thing is I want you to see the dignity of human beings. I'm going to lapse, 00:01:21.180 --> 00:01:26.980 I think, quite a lot into speaking about man. I don't mean to be sexist in that at all. 00:01:27.380 --> 00:01:32.040 It's just a lot easier when you're talking than using the word human beings. Don't be offended 00:01:32.040 --> 00:01:37.060 about it. If you're offended about it, feel free to come and see me socially distanced this 00:01:37.060 --> 00:01:42.680 week, alright? But I'm going to kind of lapse into that. So the dignity of human beings. 00:01:42.680 --> 00:01:51.340 And there's three things from verse 26. First of all, he tells us that man, human beings, 00:01:51.420 --> 00:01:59.880 have been made by God. Look at verse 26. He made from one man every nation of mankind to live on all 00:01:59.880 --> 00:02:03.780 the face of the earth. So the first thing we see about the dignity of man is he was made by God. 00:02:05.120 --> 00:02:10.920 He tells us, secondly, that man has been made like God, that we are offspring made in his image. 00:02:10.919 --> 00:02:17.799 And then he says we've been made for God. And those three things tell us wonderfully about the dignity 00:02:17.799 --> 00:02:24.899 of who you are. That you are a creature. You've been made by God. And that's where your true dignity 00:02:24.899 --> 00:02:31.279 lies. In the fact that you've been made by God. You've not evolved from some kind of primeval sludge. 00:02:31.859 --> 00:02:37.099 You've not evolved from the animal kingdom. You've been made by God. And the Genesis account is really 00:02:37.099 --> 00:02:43.780 interesting here. Genesis 1 and 2 are interesting because there are some that say, well, actually, 00:02:43.859 --> 00:02:49.900 when you read Genesis 1 and when you read Genesis 2, and they are contradictory accounts of creation, 00:02:49.979 --> 00:02:56.819 you've probably heard that. Well, of course, when you look at Genesis 1 and 2, it's very clear that 00:02:56.819 --> 00:03:01.120 they're not contradictory. So come with me to the start of the Bible. They're not contradictory. 00:03:01.120 --> 00:03:13.460 They are complementary. And so in Genesis 1, the stress is on human beings' affinity, human beings' likeness 00:03:13.460 --> 00:03:21.879 with the rest of creation. And that shouldn't embarrass you. In the accounts of creation, Genesis 1 00:03:21.879 --> 00:03:27.780 stresses the affinity and the likeness that you have to the rest of creation. 00:03:27.780 --> 00:03:34.800 And there are similarities between human beings and apes. There are similarities between human beings 00:03:34.800 --> 00:03:39.800 and animals. That's not surprising. Why is it not surprising? Because we've been made by the same 00:03:39.800 --> 00:03:46.420 creator. In fact, we were made on the same day of creation. Human beings and animals have been made to 00:03:46.420 --> 00:03:52.659 live in the same environment, to breathe the same oxygen. We were made out of the same dust. And of course, 00:03:52.659 --> 00:03:59.000 that there are similarities. That shouldn't surprise us at all in the slightest. And Genesis 1 stresses 00:03:59.000 --> 00:04:05.340 there is an affinity between humans and the rest of creation. But even in Genesis 1, there's something 00:04:05.340 --> 00:04:12.000 very special in the way that man is made. So look at verses chapter 1 and verse 24. And that tells us 00:04:12.000 --> 00:04:20.439 how the animals were made. How God made the animals. And how he made animals and man on the same day. 00:04:21.720 --> 00:04:28.420 And he made the beasts of the field, in verse 24, can you see it? According to their kinds. 00:04:28.839 --> 00:04:34.300 The end of verse 24, according to their kinds. Verse 25, he made the beasts of the earth according to their 00:04:34.300 --> 00:04:40.139 kinds. 25, according to their kind. He made everything that creeps on the ground according to their kind. 00:04:40.139 --> 00:04:47.539 And then look at verse 26. Verse 26, God says, 00:04:49.899 --> 00:04:57.300 Let us make man in our image, after our likeness. And it's almost as if, according to their kind, 00:04:57.399 --> 00:05:03.959 according to their kind, according to their kind, and God, on the threshold of making man, he pauses. 00:05:03.959 --> 00:05:12.180 There's a formula, isn't there? But the formula changes. And man is made on the same day as the animals, 00:05:12.299 --> 00:05:17.799 but he's not made in the same way as the animals. And when God makes animals, he says, 00:05:17.979 --> 00:05:24.599 Let the earth bring forth the cattle and the creeping things. But when God wants to make man, 00:05:24.719 --> 00:05:32.099 he doesn't say anything to anything, bring it forth. He doesn't say, Let the land bring forth. 00:05:32.100 --> 00:05:36.200 No, he makes man directly. Man, human beings are a special act of creation. 00:05:38.140 --> 00:05:44.280 And before God makes human beings, it's as if God takes counsel. It's as almost as if he pauses, 00:05:44.580 --> 00:05:49.800 and within the Godhead, Father, Son, and Holy Spirit, they agree, let us make man. 00:05:50.939 --> 00:05:57.340 It's a different formula. Let us make man in our own image and our own likeness. There's something 00:05:57.339 --> 00:06:01.979 very special about the creation of humanity. Because God is involved in it immediately. 00:06:02.899 --> 00:06:07.479 And directly. And that comes out in chapter 2, verse 7, where you've got a zoom lens of what happened. 00:06:09.139 --> 00:06:14.819 When God created human beings, then the Lord God, chapter 2, verse 7, formed the man of dust of the ground, 00:06:15.079 --> 00:06:18.779 and he breathed into his nostrils the breath of life, and the man became a living creature. 00:06:18.779 --> 00:06:24.419 The distinctive thing about human beings is not that they became a living soul. 00:06:25.259 --> 00:06:33.359 I think sometimes we can teach it like that, but man isn't different because he's got a soul. 00:06:34.739 --> 00:06:37.679 Although that's true, that isn't what the passage says. 00:06:38.899 --> 00:06:43.119 What it's saying is, the verse is saying that human beings became animate. 00:06:43.239 --> 00:06:44.439 They became living beings. 00:06:44.439 --> 00:06:48.699 We share that with all the animals, don't we? 00:09:41.079 --> 00:09:42.059 Well, Gentile dogs. 00:09:43.839 --> 00:09:45.859 It's a total misunderstanding of their role in history. 00:09:45.860 --> 00:09:53.120 Because when God chose Adam, Abraham, and he made those promises to Abraham and his descendants, 00:09:53.279 --> 00:09:55.419 it was not to make them into a master race. 00:09:56.659 --> 00:10:00.620 It was to make them into a servant people that would spread across the world the glory of God. 00:10:02.940 --> 00:10:04.700 So here is the dignity of man. 00:10:07.019 --> 00:10:12.620 You see, the fact that you have been made in a very special way by God, in a very direct way. 00:10:12.620 --> 00:10:17.440 That he made from one man every nation of mankind to live on all the face of the earth. 00:10:18.560 --> 00:10:23.779 And every single human being in this world has worth because God made him or her. 00:10:26.759 --> 00:10:32.580 Second thing, not only did God make man, but we've been made, not only have we been made by God, 00:10:32.700 --> 00:10:35.340 but Paul tells us we've been made like God. 00:10:36.740 --> 00:10:37.860 So can you see that in verse 28? 00:10:37.940 --> 00:10:38.879 Go back to Acts 17. 00:10:38.879 --> 00:10:40.560 In verse 28, it says, 00:10:40.559 --> 00:10:56.939 Do you see what he's saying? 00:10:57.000 --> 00:10:58.739 He's saying you've got it completely the wrong way around. 00:11:00.079 --> 00:11:02.059 You can't make God in your likeness. 00:11:02.139 --> 00:11:03.539 He's made you in his likeness. 00:11:05.000 --> 00:11:05.699 That's what he's saying. 00:11:05.759 --> 00:11:07.000 We are God's offspring. 00:11:07.000 --> 00:11:15.919 That is, God has made us in his image, in his likeness, and that's what makes us so different from the animals. 00:11:18.940 --> 00:11:21.200 Emil Brunner, who's a funny theologian, put it like this. 00:11:22.399 --> 00:11:22.659 He says, 00:11:22.799 --> 00:11:26.080 The animal possesses understanding, no doubt, but not reason. 00:11:28.080 --> 00:11:30.879 It is no doubt the beginnings of civilization, but no culture. 00:11:30.879 --> 00:11:36.279 It probably has curiosity and knows many things, but it has no science. 00:11:36.580 --> 00:11:38.840 It probably plays, but it has no art. 00:11:40.039 --> 00:11:41.939 It knows herds, but not fellowship. 00:11:42.320 --> 00:11:44.720 It probably fears punishment, but has no conscience. 00:11:45.320 --> 00:11:50.159 It probably realizes the superiority of man, but it knows nothing of the Lord or the world. 00:11:50.159 --> 00:12:05.779 It's not that you're a moral, rational creature. 00:12:06.199 --> 00:12:10.679 We've been made in the image and likeness of God, and that's where our worth lies. 00:12:10.679 --> 00:12:18.459 We have no intrinsic worth of our own. 00:12:20.539 --> 00:12:21.819 We're just an amalgam, aren't we? 00:15:27.259 --> 00:15:31.460 But according to the Bible, that's exactly with human beings. 00:15:31.580 --> 00:15:33.620 We are ruins, magnificent ruins. 00:15:36.100 --> 00:15:41.220 I think it's hard for you and I to conceive what Adam and Eve would have been like when they were created. 00:15:43.799 --> 00:15:50.319 And yet, and yet, and yet, man has a dignity, women have a dignity in their sin and in their fallenness. 00:15:50.320 --> 00:15:53.780 There's a dignity about a human being. 00:15:55.000 --> 00:15:57.879 And the tragedy is we are not what we were meant to be. 00:15:59.879 --> 00:16:04.280 That image in which we've been created has been marred and shattered. 00:16:04.480 --> 00:16:06.379 It's scarcely recognizable. 00:16:07.240 --> 00:16:08.280 But it's not eradicated. 00:16:09.560 --> 00:16:10.520 It's still there. 00:16:10.519 --> 00:16:14.319 But you can scarcely see it. 00:16:16.720 --> 00:16:20.980 And there are times, aren't there, when you can scarcely distinguish human beings from animals. 00:16:23.340 --> 00:16:28.159 And we need to remind ourselves that not only have we been made by God, but we've been made like God. 00:16:29.860 --> 00:16:32.179 And thirdly, Paul tells us that we've been made for God. 00:16:32.240 --> 00:16:33.000 Look at verse 26. 00:16:33.000 --> 00:16:37.580 And he made from one man every nation of mankind to live on all the face of the earth, 00:16:37.679 --> 00:16:40.539 having determined a lot of periods and boundaries of their dwelling place. 00:16:41.240 --> 00:16:44.340 That they should seek God and perhaps feel their way towards him and find him. 00:16:44.659 --> 00:16:46.659 Yet he's actually not far from each one of us. 00:16:46.820 --> 00:16:49.200 And that's the reason for your existence. 00:16:53.740 --> 00:16:55.639 That you would find God. 00:16:55.639 --> 00:17:05.000 One writer has described life as a country where there are no signposts because there's nowhere to go. 00:17:08.019 --> 00:17:11.039 Paul says, human beings, you have somewhere to go. 00:17:12.200 --> 00:17:13.420 You've a reason for living. 00:17:13.700 --> 00:17:15.139 You've a reason for being cured. 00:17:15.279 --> 00:17:20.180 That God has made you in order that you might seek after and you might find God. 00:17:20.180 --> 00:17:25.880 And so you have a purpose and a meaning to life. 00:17:26.080 --> 00:17:27.600 You've been made by God. 00:17:27.680 --> 00:17:28.779 You've been made like God. 00:17:28.840 --> 00:17:29.779 You've been made for God. 00:17:29.860 --> 00:17:30.680 That's man's dignity. 00:17:33.580 --> 00:17:36.700 So secondly, let's see man's destiny. 00:17:37.940 --> 00:17:38.960 What's man's destiny? 00:17:39.080 --> 00:17:39.560 Verse 31. 00:17:40.980 --> 00:17:45.519 Because he's fixed the day on which he will judge the world in righteousness by a man whom he's appointed. 00:17:45.519 --> 00:17:48.380 And of this he's given assurance by raising him from the dead. 00:17:50.180 --> 00:17:54.259 And there's nothing uncertain about where we're heading as humans. 00:17:55.299 --> 00:17:57.279 There's a great deal of uncertainty today, isn't there? 00:17:58.420 --> 00:18:01.120 But there really is no uncertainty about where we're heading. 00:18:02.500 --> 00:18:04.279 There's nothing uncertain about your destiny. 00:18:04.720 --> 00:18:06.420 You might feel there's great uncertainty about tomorrow. 00:18:06.620 --> 00:18:08.340 But there's nothing uncertain about your destiny. 00:18:08.460 --> 00:18:09.299 It's not a random affair. 00:18:09.400 --> 00:18:10.240 It's not left a chance. 00:18:11.340 --> 00:18:12.920 Paul tells us that God has fixed the day. 00:18:14.980 --> 00:18:17.080 When he's going to judge the world in righteousness. 00:18:17.079 --> 00:18:21.759 And you and I are going to be judged. 00:18:24.079 --> 00:18:25.319 And that is the human destiny. 00:18:25.519 --> 00:18:29.179 Men and women, boys and girls, made in the image and likeness of God will be judged. 00:18:29.319 --> 00:18:30.659 And that is good news. 00:18:33.000 --> 00:18:34.279 Why is it good news? 00:18:34.399 --> 00:18:38.939 It's good news because it tells you that everything is meaningful and everything is significant. 00:18:38.940 --> 00:18:45.299 We live in an age, don't we, which is apathetic. 00:18:46.960 --> 00:18:49.860 People shrug their shoulders and say, well, is it worth it? 00:18:49.900 --> 00:18:50.799 Nothing means anything. 00:18:50.900 --> 00:18:51.680 People don't care. 00:18:53.259 --> 00:18:53.580 Apathy. 00:18:55.460 --> 00:18:56.600 The apostle says, no, no. 00:18:56.940 --> 00:18:58.240 He says God is going to judge. 00:18:59.840 --> 00:19:02.580 And that means that everything, everything actually matters. 00:19:02.579 --> 00:19:09.720 Everything you've ever thought or done or said is going to be brought into judgment. 00:19:10.919 --> 00:19:16.079 The very idea of judgment invests the whole of your life with significance. 00:19:17.559 --> 00:19:20.359 That God is going to judge the world and he'll judge the world in righteousness. 00:19:20.639 --> 00:19:23.299 And we take this so much for granted, don't we?
