I'm sure loads of us have heard this, we've seen it on 00:00:07.839 --> 00:00:13.560 fridge magnets and inspirational quotes, but I don't know if many of you knew that it was from 00:00:13.560 --> 00:00:21.160 Nehemiah. I confess I didn't. So today we're continuing our series on Nehemiah. Throughout 00:00:21.160 --> 00:00:26.780 the series so far, we've seen how the word of God has been used to bring the people together 00:00:26.780 --> 00:00:33.660 through Nehemiah to build up the walls of Jerusalem and rebuild the wrecked city. 00:00:34.740 --> 00:00:40.900 God has been doing miraculous things here, but through ordinary people and things. The people 00:00:40.900 --> 00:00:46.780 have joined together to rebuild the walls, but miraculously they've managed to do it in 52 days. 00:00:47.820 --> 00:00:53.340 So by the end of chapter 6, the walls have been completed and from now on we're going to look 00:00:53.340 --> 00:00:59.980 at how God uses Nehemiah's efforts and focus to concentrate on building up the actual people 00:00:59.980 --> 00:01:08.840 that live in the walls. The chapter, Nehemiah 8 verses 1 to 18, is full of really good stuff, 00:01:09.140 --> 00:01:14.740 but this morning I'd like to concentrate on three main things and it'll be really good if you've 00:01:14.740 --> 00:01:21.060 got your Bible there to actually open it up and follow along with me. So the three things we're 00:01:21.060 --> 00:01:29.379 going to look at is how understanding the word of God is really important and how we then rejoice 00:01:29.379 --> 00:01:36.060 in the word of God when we understand it. And then when we understand it and we're rejoicing, 00:01:36.280 --> 00:01:38.599 we actually then obey the word of God. 00:01:41.420 --> 00:01:45.219 So first of all, starting to look at verses 1 to 8. 00:01:45.219 --> 00:01:52.459 Any time that we're asked to preach, we have a huge responsibility and we want to get it right 00:01:52.459 --> 00:02:00.180 and try and discern what God is saying through the passage. Here we see the people gathered together 00:02:00.180 --> 00:02:06.500 after the walls have been built and they are eager for Ezra the prophet to preach to them. 00:02:07.200 --> 00:02:09.539 They tell him to bring out the book. 00:02:09.539 --> 00:02:16.219 They've had quite enough, to be honest, of Ezra and Nehemiah telling them all about their ideas 00:02:16.219 --> 00:02:22.159 and giving them building instructions and now they want Ezra to get out the book and teach them 00:02:22.159 --> 00:02:26.219 God's law because they're really hungry to hear God's word. 00:02:27.500 --> 00:02:33.739 Also, if you look at verse 2, it says the whole community of men, women and children were there listening. 00:02:33.740 --> 00:02:39.560 It was really important that everyone, including the kids, understood God's word. 00:02:40.920 --> 00:02:42.500 This is true for us today. 00:02:43.320 --> 00:02:48.540 This is why the children's work here at Christ Church and all that we do here is so important. 00:02:49.560 --> 00:02:57.500 Children need both good Christian leaders and also their parents to explain what's written in the Bible to them 00:02:57.500 --> 00:03:02.160 and to actually help them to read it and learn to understand it for themselves. 00:03:02.159 --> 00:03:08.740 In verse 2, it also tells us that this gathering was on the first day of the seventh month. 00:03:09.439 --> 00:03:11.919 You may wonder, what is the significance of this? 00:03:12.500 --> 00:03:16.500 Well, the number seven was very significant for the Jewish people of that time. 00:03:17.240 --> 00:03:21.259 Just as for them and for us, the seventh day was a day of rest. 00:03:21.719 --> 00:03:28.120 They also had a law that every seven years, that would be a special year where all debts would be cancelled. 00:03:28.120 --> 00:03:37.939 And every single year, the seventh month would be a really special month when people would get together to celebrate and share food with each other 00:03:37.939 --> 00:03:42.719 and also to look after the poor and the widowed and those on the margins who didn't have much. 00:03:43.319 --> 00:03:46.540 And this would be a time of fellowship with God and with each other. 00:03:47.540 --> 00:03:50.800 So this gathering wasn't just spontaneous, it was planned. 00:03:50.800 --> 00:03:57.960 They knew as they beavered away and worked away to finish that wall that this special seventh month was coming down the track. 00:03:59.460 --> 00:04:07.200 However, we do see some spontaneity here when the people react to Ezra by wanting him to get out the book. 00:04:07.199 --> 00:04:13.619 This wasn't just like us on a Sunday morning, though, listening to a 20 minute preach either. 00:04:14.359 --> 00:04:17.740 They were there from six o'clock in the morning till 12 noon. 00:04:18.319 --> 00:04:23.099 Six hours of attentive listening nonstop to God's word. 00:04:23.759 --> 00:04:28.139 So no drifting off halfway through and thinking about what we're going to cook for dinner here. 00:04:29.779 --> 00:04:33.319 They want to hear from God and know what he's saying to them. 00:04:33.319 --> 00:04:42.959 And then if you look at verses four to six, we read it tells us that people showed great respect for the word of God by standing to hear it, 00:04:43.420 --> 00:04:49.980 by bowing their hands, heads, sorry, and lifting their hands as Ezra blessed them. 00:04:51.980 --> 00:04:55.120 So bowing their heads and raising their hands. 00:04:55.120 --> 00:05:05.959 What we can learn from this, I think, is that it's really important to us to come ready to hear and understand God's word, to be expectant. 00:05:06.899 --> 00:05:11.579 Another important thing to note is how Ezra helped the people to understand. 00:05:12.699 --> 00:05:16.939 In verses seven to eight, we see that he has all different priests standing with him. 00:05:17.660 --> 00:05:20.100 I can't really pronounce most of their names, to be honest. 00:05:20.100 --> 00:05:27.280 I imagine that Ezra would have been reading the scripture in Hebrew, but the people in the crowd would probably have spoken all different languages, 00:05:27.700 --> 00:05:33.500 with some of them there only hearing this for the very first time because they'd just come to faith. 00:05:34.100 --> 00:05:37.520 This would have been an exciting time of revival, I imagine. 00:05:38.540 --> 00:05:46.100 So all the other priests would probably be dotted around the crowd, translating what Ezra was saying and explaining to the people what it meant 00:05:46.220 --> 00:05:50.020 so that the people could really understand what God was saying to them. 00:05:50.100 --> 00:05:58.300 If the people and the city were going to rebuild and be reformed as the people of God in this city and land, 00:05:58.540 --> 00:06:05.720 it was crucial that Ezra explained to the people and that they knew exactly what was going on and what was needed. 00:06:06.660 --> 00:06:09.460 They needed to use the knowledge they had correctly. 00:06:09.459 --> 00:06:16.839 If we now look at ourselves, it is important that we commit to prayerfully study the Bible, 00:06:17.359 --> 00:06:23.699 not just to learn more of what's in the Bible, but to learn much more about God himself through it. 00:06:23.699 --> 00:06:34.180 As our understanding of God's word grows and develops, then our rejoicing in God can grow and can be a reality in our daily lives 00:06:34.180 --> 00:06:41.360 that helps to sustain us in the peaks and the troughs, the celebrations and the trials that our lives go through. 00:06:42.459 --> 00:06:45.599 And with that, our obedience to God's word will grow. 00:06:45.600 --> 00:06:50.020 But all this has to start with understanding God's word. God's word and it gives people the feeling and the joyousness of revival. 00:07:33.240 --> 00:07:34.180 They are revived. 00:07:35.300 --> 00:07:40.240 This message from Nehemiah is so timely and
