Paul, the Apostle Paul is writing to the Philippian church. 00:02:56.259 --> 00:03:04.919 And he's just got done saying, only let your manner of life be worthy of the gospel, which we said last time was a huge call on our lives. 00:03:05.039 --> 00:03:05.840 How do you do that? 00:03:05.900 --> 00:03:06.740 How do you do that practically? 00:03:07.199 --> 00:03:14.120 And we believe that Paul is saying that you do that by being in unison with one another, that we're striving for the gospel. 00:03:14.120 --> 00:03:26.039 And then he also says that he's suffering for the gospel, which was kind of an alarming point because we're not really used to hearing the word suffering, especially here in the United States and in college. 00:03:28.539 --> 00:03:29.099 But why? 00:03:29.200 --> 00:03:33.500 He says in verse 29, it's been granted to you. 00:03:33.680 --> 00:03:37.340 And we said that was kind of a strange thing for Paul to say, that it's been granted to you to suffer. 00:10:34.240 So if we just look back a couple of verses, we would say that Paul is, and we're going to see this because we're going to contrast the Philippian church and the Corinthian church. absent, 00:10:41.560 --> 00:10:48.899 I may hear that you are standing firm in one spirit with one mind, striving side by side for the faith of the gospel. 00:10:50.659 --> 00:10:52.799 So we're looking at the Philippian church. 00:10:53.000 --> 00:10:54.560 Let's just take a look at the Philippian church. 00:10:54.559 --> 00:11:00.479 And it turns out that the Philippian church is partnering with Paul in his sufferings in the gospel, their sharing the gospel. 00:11:00.919 --> 00:11:09.319 Paul gives a brilliant testimony about a path that is who is doing the work in the gospel, who is ministering, who is working hard, who is laboring with them. 00:11:10.419 --> 00:11:13.559 But there's still a little bit of disunity because he's bringing this up. 00:11:13.719 --> 00:11:17.159 He's saying he's urging them on to have unity. 00:11:17.539 --> 00:11:19.500 And so it's apparent that there's a little bit of disunity. 00:11:19.500 --> 00:11:23.720 And it's so important for Paul to says, y'all are doing all these good things. 00:11:35.399 --> 00:11:36.559 Y'all are caring for the poor. 00:11:36.700 --> 00:11:39.440 But the thing that y'all have lost is your first love. 00:11:39.820 --> 00:11:47.000 So it's possible that we can be, as a church, doing the right things and having the right direction, 00:11:47.000 --> 00:11:50.799 but allowing something as small as Philippian church was that of disunity. 00:12:12.059 --> 00:12:16.100 He says there's a sense in which that there is a danger of every healthy church. 00:12:16.100 --> 00:12:23.180 He says, it is when people are really earnest, when the beliefs really matter to them, that they are apt to get up against each other. 00:12:23.759 --> 00:12:26.920 The greater the enthusiasm, the greater the damage that church is compared to the Corinthian church a lot of the time. 00:14:29.879 --> 00:14:35.120 And I would kind of say that we're, in a lot of ways, really, really similar to the Corinthian church. 00:28:20.740 sweet tea loving glasses, 00:28:20.879 --> 00:28:21.759 for like just a second, 00:28:22.259 --> 00:28:23.599 that is the most, 00:28:23.599 --> 00:28:25.899 like broad and wise, 00:28:26.059 --> 00:28:27.459 hardest thing to fall on. 00:28:27.939 --> 00:28:30.519 But I don't believe that Paul is just being a hopeless romantic. 00:28:30.939 --> 00:28:31.059 Like, 00:28:31.079
