--> 00:00:49.239 And so this week I went, you know, let's not talk about the law and gospel from Matthew 5, 17 through 20 and Exodus 20 this morning. 00:00:49.240 --> 00:00:55.020 But let's take a little time to consider all that it means to be a mother. 00:00:56.000 --> 00:01:04.939 It is my intention today to be an encouragement to the mothers of our congregation by reminding you of your high calling in Jesus Christ. 00:01:05.879 --> 00:01:10.480 You may find some challenge in God's Word to us this morning. 00:01:10.480 --> 00:01:19.640 But I want you to know that I believe that the mothers of our church work very hard to excel in their disciple making. 00:01:19.840 --> 00:01:22.240 And this does not go unnoticed. 00:01:22.880 --> 00:01:25.900 I am proud of each and every one of persist by grace to train up your children as God will use you to yield fruit in their lives. 00:01:49.200 --> 00:01:56.280 So with that in mind, let's take a look at Proverbs 1, verses 7 through 9. of the Lord is the beginning of knowledge. 00:02:22.300 --> 00:02:25.159 Fools despise wisdom and instruction. 00:02:26.060 --> 00:02:32.599 Hear, my son, your father's instruction and forsake not observations from Proverbs 1, 7 through 9. 00:03:25.539 --> 00:03:31.560 Number one, God is the originator of the family. 00:03:32.000 --> 00:03:35.120 God created the family. 00:03:37.040 --> 00:03:40.060 Solomon is the book of Proverbs author. 00:03:40.060 --> 00:03:59.180 The wisdom that he speaks of throughout the book is a wisdom founded in the fear of the Lord. 00:03:59.319 --> 00:04:04.840 So, he leads his teaching out in chapter 1 with these words from verse 7. 00:04:04.840 --> 00:04:09.180 The fear of the Lord is the beginning of knowledge. 00:04:09.180 --> 00:04:17.579 Which fools despise this knowledge, the wisdom and the instruction that will follow in the books. 00:04:17.699 --> 00:04:26.259 And he begins his instruction with a most important note concerning the source of wisdom. 00:04:27.319 --> 00:04:27.800 The family. 00:04:28.480 --> 00:04:38.319 He instructs his son to hear his father's instruction and to not abandon his mother's teaching. 00:04:39.180 --> 00:04:46.879 So, God in his loving kindness towards mankind created the family. 00:04:47.699 --> 00:04:51.780 We read in Genesis chapter 1 verses 27 and 28. 00:04:52.000 --> 00:04:54.420 So, God created man in his own image. 00:04:55.139 --> 00:04:58.139 In the image of God, he created him male and female. 00:04:58.379 --> 00:05:00.259 He created them. 00:05:00.259 --> 00:05:02.480 And God blessed them. 00:05:02.480 --> 00:05:07.120 And God said to them, be fruitful and multiply. 00:05:07.680 --> 00:05:08.779 Have children. 00:05:09.579 --> 00:05:10.879 And fill the earth. 00:05:11.099 --> 00:05:12.539 And subdue it. 00:05:12.639 --> 00:05:16.019 And have dominion over fish of the sea and birds of the air. 00:05:16.159 --> 00:05:16.980 And over the heavens. 00:05:17.039 --> 00:05:19.659 Every living thing that moves on the earth. 00:05:20.259 --> 00:05:24.300 God gives to them this multiplying mandate. 00:05:24.300 --> 00:05:30.139 And we come to further understand, as is noted for us in Genesis 2.24, 00:05:30.939 --> 00:05:34.379 that there's a unit that's created here. 00:05:34.780 --> 00:05:34.900 Right? 00:05:35.379 --> 00:05:37.300 Moses writes in Genesis 2.24, 00:05:37.439 --> 00:05:42.740 Therefore, a man shall leave his father and his mother and hold fast to his wife, 00:05:42.780 --> 00:05:45.860 and they shall become one flesh. 00:05:45.860 --> 00:05:49.580 And so, God created this institution of family, 00:05:49.819 --> 00:05:53.860 and we create, as we multiply and marry, families. 00:05:54.000 --> 00:05:54.139 Right? 00:05:54.160 --> 00:06:00.240 We continue to portion ourselves off and create families. 00:06:01.319 --> 00:06:11.199 The family was and is meant to be an institution itself with God-mandated responsibilities. 00:06:12.420 --> 00:06:13.620 So, second observation. 00:06:13.620 --> 00:06:17.040 So, first observation, God is the originator of the family. 00:06:17.199 --> 00:06:23.139 Secondly, the family was places in the Scripture 00:06:43.000 --> 00:06:47.079 where God instructs parents to instruct their children, 00:06:47.459 --> 00:06:51.579 like Deuteronomy 6, verses 4-7. 00:06:51.680 --> 00:06:57.300 Hear, O Israel, the Lord our God, the Lord is one. 00:06:58.120 --> 00:07:00.399 You shall love the Lord your God with all your heart, 00:07:00.519 --> 00:07:02.779 and with all your soul, and with all your might. 00:07:02.779 --> 00:07:08.219 And these words that I command you today shall be on your heart. 00:07:09.079 --> 00:07:12.559 You shall teach them diligently to your children, 00:07:12.799 --> 00:07:15.379 and shall talk of them when you sit in your house, 00:07:15.459 --> 00:07:17.099 and when you walk by the way, 00:07:17.219 --> 00:07:18.579 and when you lie down, 00:07:18.659 --> 00:07:20.899 and when you rise. 00:07:21.239 --> 00:07:21.419 Right? 00:07:21.679 --> 00:07:23.779 There's a fervency about the teaching, 00:07:23.779 --> 00:07:30.319 and there's an ongoing teaching about the ways of God to our children. 00:07:31.500 --> 00:07:34.699 Also, in Ephesians 6, verse 4, 00:07:35.259 --> 00:07:36.839 fathers, do not provoke your children to anger, 00:07:37.039 --> 00:07:39.899 but bring them up in the discipline, 00:07:40.279 --> 00:07:43.919 the training, and instruction of the Lord. 00:07:44.839 --> 00:07:46.000 Right here in Ephesians 6, 00:07:46.079 --> 00:07:50.379 Paul places the emphasis of raising children on fathers as the head of the household, 00:07:50.379 --> 00:07:56.420 but this does not exclude mothers as they are helpers of the fathers in this task. 00:07:57.379 --> 00:08:00.620 And the Bible instructs children to be students. 00:08:00.879 --> 00:08:05.279 So then it follows that the family, the home, is a school. 00:08:05.560 --> 00:08:06.920 Not only in today's text, 00:08:06.980 --> 00:08:11.819 but also in places like Proverbs 23, verse 22. 00:08:12.819 --> 00:08:15.300 Listen to your father who gave you life, 00:08:15.379 --> 00:08:19.240 and do not despise your mother when she is old. 00:08:19.240 --> 00:08:21.900 And Ephesians 6, verse 1. 00:08:22.420 --> 00:08:25.319 Children, obey your parents in the Lord, 00:08:25.920 --> 00:08:27.040 for this is right. 00:08:27.439 --> 00:08:30.079 Get your children to memorize that and repeat it back to you often. 00:08:31.759 --> 00:08:37.519 So, the family was designed by God to be a school, 00:08:37.680 --> 00:08:43.299 to be a place of instruction in the ways of God for our children. 00:08:44.279 --> 00:08:45.980 This is why many of us, 00:08:45.980 --> 00:08:47.740 I venture to say all of us, 00:08:47.820 --> 00:08:49.740 but I don't want to err in that way, 00:08:49.820 --> 00:08:54.980 but many of us in this church believe in the benefits of homeschooling, right? 00:08:54.980 --> 00:08:58.700 Because it creates such good opportunity for this very thing. 00:08:59.279 --> 00:09:02.440 But however our children receive their educations, 00:09:02.580 --> 00:09:05.000 the responsibility of teaching them 00:09:05.000 --> 00:09:07.860 to have a proper fear of the Lord 00:09:07.860 --> 00:09:10.360 falls to parents, 00:09:10.360 --> 00:09:15.580 and it is not a responsibility that can be given to anyone else. 00:09:17.120 --> 00:09:17.720 Third, 00:09:18.500 --> 00:09:25.159 the fear of the Lord is meant to be 00:10:21.779 that are part of our church 00:10:21.779 --> 00:10:22.779 and for the work that you're doing, 00:10:23.600 --> 00:10:24.860 but has at its foundation 00:10:24.860 --> 00:10:26.779 secular humanism, right? 00:10:26.779 --> 00:10:28.399 By not talking about God at all 00:10:28.399 --> 00:10:30.519 and by suggesting that education 00:10:30.519 --> 00:10:33.419 is the answer to all of your problems, 00:10:33.720 --> 00:10:37.959 you build a worldview for your children, right? 00:10:38.240 --> 00:10:42.480 All education has to sit on a base of something. 00:10:43.579 --> 00:10:45.879 The Christian family is to be sure 00:10:45.879 --> 00:10:48.700 that the fear of the Lord 00:10:48.700 --> 00:10:51.000 is set as the base 00:10:51.000 --> 00:10:53.960 for all other education. 00:10:55.220 --> 00:10:56.700 Now, this phrase, fear of the Lord, 00:10:56.759 --> 00:10:57.939 does not mean that we are working 00:10:57.939 --> 00:11:01.740 to send our children towering from God. 00:11:28.439 Right? 00:11:29.039 --> 00:11:32.199 They will see that it's all built upon 00:11:32.199 --> 00:11:34.259 the fact, the reality, 00:11:34.500 --> 00:11:36.000 that God created this world under God's rule 00:11:44.960 --> 00:11:46.519 and they will also see 00:11:46.519 --> 00:11:48.040 the world's brokenness 00:11:48.040 --> 00:11:50.120 in rejection of God 00:11:50.120 --> stored up 00:12:08.080 --> 00:12:09.680 for those who fear you 00:12:09.680 --> 00:12:11.780 and work for those 00:12:11.780 --> 00:12:14.340 who take refuge in you. 00:12:15.440 --> 00:12:18.120 Psalm 112 and verse 1. 00:12:19.700 --> 00:12:20.380 The psalmist writes, 00:12:20.500 --> 00:12:21.400 Praise the Lord. 00:12:22.340 --> 00:12:23.400 Blessed is the man 00:12:23.400 --> 00:12:25.080 who fears the Lord. 00:12:25.480 --> 00:12:27.800 Blessed, doing well 00:12:27.800 --> 00:12:29.440 as the man who fears the Lord, 00:12:29.540 --> 00:12:31.600 who greatly delights 00:12:31.600 --> 00:12:32.980 in the Lord's commandments. 00:12:34.500 --> 00:12:37.600 And Psalm 115 and verse 13. 00:12:38.860 --> 00:12:40.980 The Lord will bless those 00:12:40.980 --> 00:12:42.340 who fear the Lord, 00:12:42.480 --> 00:12:45.420 both the small and the great. 00:12:47.060 --> 00:12:49.060 So, there is a promise 00:12:49.060 --> 00:12:51.840 of goodness and blessing 00:12:51.840 -->
