those sections in Acts where Luke was personally accompanying Paul on his journey. 00:06:04.539 --> 00:06:09.620 You might wonder, well, what's Luke been up to since chapter 21 when he came with Paul to Jerusalem? 00:06:09.620 --> 00:06:16.660 Probably been researching all the things that went into his gospel for the last two years living in Palestine with Paul. 00:06:17.759 --> 00:06:22.879 But anyway, here the sort of we section picks up and Luke is on the boat with Paul on this journey. 00:06:23.000 --> 00:06:30.720 In the 19th century, a Scottish sailor named James Smith wrote a book called The Voyage and Shipwreck of St. Paul, 00:06:30.980 --> 00:06:32.740 which is all about this chapter of Acts. 00:06:32.740 --> 00:06:40.160 And in fact, most of the sort of studies of this chapter of Acts still make reference to that study from 150 plus years ago. 00:06:41.620 --> 00:06:46.560 And Smith himself was an experienced sailor and he actually lived in the Mediterranean for a number of years. 00:06:46.680 --> 00:06:50.000 I don't know what a Scottish sailor was doing living in the Mediterranean, but there you go. 00:06:50.079 --> 00:06:51.100 He was eccentric, I guess. 00:06:51.579 --> 00:06:55.420 And he basically spent a whole winter investigating Luke's account here. 00:06:55.540 --> 00:07:01.000 Basically resailing the route, studying the historicity of shipping and boating and storms at the time. 00:07:01.000 --> 00:07:06.100 And his conclusion in that study, having basically lived through it himself, was this. 00:07:07.259 --> 00:07:07.639 He says, 00:07:07.879 --> 00:07:13.079 No sailor would have written in a style so little like that of a sailor. 00:07:15.040 --> 00:07:21.220 But no man not a sailor could have written a narrative of a sea voyage so consistent in all its parts, 00:07:21.819 --> 00:07:23.699 unless from actual observation. 00:07:25.019 --> 00:07:29.920 In other words, what Smith is saying is that, look, on the one hand, Luke's definitely not a sailor. 00:07:29.920 --> 00:07:31.420 We know that from his style. 00:07:32.840 --> 00:07:36.300 But for someone who's not a professional on the water, there's only one way. 00:07:36.420 --> 00:07:41.340 He could have put it together with such an accurate and consistent account. 00:07:42.220 --> 00:07:46.000 He must have been there, Smith concludes, and seen it with his own eyes. 00:07:46.000 --> 00:07:55.639 And that means that Acts, in this sort of chapter of Acts, doesn't just have some real historical reliability behind it, 00:07:56.060 --> 00:08:01.899 but it also has real existential reality behind it. 00:08:03.139 --> 00:08:09.139 In other words, Luke knew what it was like to be in such a desperate situation 00:08:09.139 --> 00:08:12.899 that he had abandoned any hope of being saved. 00:08:16.199 --> 00:08:18.379 Of course, the journey started out well, right? 00:08:18.500 --> 00:08:24.860 Luke and Aristarchus, in a real act of friendship, commit to go with Paul on his journey to Rome. 00:08:25.639 --> 00:08:30.699 They probably paid for their passage themselves in order to accompany him along the way. 00:08:30.699 --> 00:08:34.860 And Paul was even allowed to visit his Christian friends in Sidon. 00:08:36.019 --> 00:08:40.319 In verse 3 there, the phrase friends, or his friends, or the friends, 00:08:40.399 --> 00:08:43.399 might even be a technical term that Luke is using for the church. 00:08:45.259 --> 00:08:48.399 A sign of the deep bonds that the gospel creates. 00:08:48.399 --> 00:08:53.059 But then the clouds begin to he's using pretty good gut instinct. 00:10:02.159 --> 00:10:04.360 Of course, Paul wasn't a professional sailor, right? 00:10:05.600 --> 00:10:07.679 But over the course of his missionary journey, 00:10:07.679 --> 00:10:12.339 some scholars estimate that he had sailed over 3,000 miles in three decades. 00:10:14.120 --> 00:10:17.659 In 2 Corinthians, a letter written before this trip to Rome, 00:10:17.819 --> 00:10:20.559 Paul writes that he had been shipwrecked no less than three times. 00:10:21.439 --> 00:10:24.739 And one of those times, he had spent a day and a night adrift at sea. 00:10:27.219 --> 00:10:32.539 Paul knew the water perhaps a little too well for his own liking. 00:10:32.539 --> 00:10:36.860 But the crew decides to take a risk, right? 00:10:37.779 --> 00:10:39.759 Phoenix was a better harbor to spend the winter, 00:10:40.559 --> 00:10:43.879 better sort of protected from the winds that would come along, 00:10:43.939 --> 00:10:46.240 a better place to sort of shield the ship and the cargo. 00:10:46.839 --> 00:10:48.599 And it was just a day's trip up the coast. 00:10:49.319 --> 00:10:50.399 So they go for it. 00:10:51.839 --> 00:10:52.959 And it all goes wrong. 00:10:52.960 --> 00:10:58.420 A typhoon force drives them out to sea, 00:10:58.960 --> 00:11:02.580 and they start taking any measures they can to just stay afloat. 00:11:03.120 --> breaking apart. 00:11:11.399 --> 00:11:17.699 They're afraid of the Sirtis sandbars that were off the northern coast of Africa 00:11:17.699 --> 00:11:20.139 that were notorious as a graveyard for They were so scared that they themselves threw it over in any attempt to save themselves. 00:11:38.179 --> 00:11:47.319 And as the storm continues day after day, at last they throw their hope itself really bad. 00:11:57.219 --> 00:12:02.959 In fact, you know, in the ancient world, the sun and the stars were the way in which a ship's crew navigated. 00:12:03.059 --> 00:12:04.299 That was their navigation system. 00:12:04.399 --> 00:12:05.919 That's how they got their bearings on the water. 00:12:05.919 --> 00:12:10.839 So, Luke is basically saying, we were totally and utterly lost. heart, for there will be no loss of life among you, 00:14:40.019 --> 00:14:42.839 but only of the ship. 00:14:42.879 --> 00:14:47.740 For this very night there stood before me an angel of the God to whom I belong 00:14:47.740 --> 00:14:48.919 and whom I worship. 00:14:49.360 --> 00:14:49.960 And he said, 00:14:49.960 --> 00:14:51.419 Do not be afraid, Paul. 00:14:51.720 --> 00:14:53.440 You must
