Friends, sometimes our lives can feel like the headwinds and the waves are pretty strong, can't they? 00:03:02.680 --> 00:03:10.000 Sometimes the circumstances of our lives feel like the waves are pounding, and the winds are relentless, 00:03:10.420 --> 00:03:17.680 and we are weary, and we don't know whether we have what we need to keep going. 00:03:19.620 --> 00:03:22.600 What do we need the most in these circumstances? 00:03:23.780 --> 00:03:25.900 Well, we are in a series in the book of Mark, 00:03:26.020 --> 00:03:30.719 and we are continuing to read through the gospel of Mark things, right? 00:07:11.060 --> 00:07:13.339 They had just gone out earlier in chapter 6. 00:07:13.420 --> 00:07:14.379 They went out on a mission. 00:07:14.780 --> 00:07:17.860 And they themselves not only proclaimed the kingdom of God, 00:07:18.019 --> 00:07:20.600 but saw the kingdom of God as people were healed 00:07:20.600 --> 00:07:22.560 and demons were cast out. 00:07:23.019 --> 00:07:25.540 They had come back and they had seen Jesus 00:07:25.540 --> 00:07:28.840 miraculously turn five loaves of fish 00:07:28.840 --> 00:07:31.620 into a Chick-fil-A on a Sunday afternoon, 00:07:32.160 --> 00:07:34.139 feeding thousands of people. 00:07:37.600 --> 00:07:39.040 They were also weary. 00:07:39.040 --> 00:07:42.080 If you remember, they went away. 00:07:42.220 --> 00:07:43.020 They went on the mission. 00:07:43.160 --> 00:07:43.840 They came back. 00:07:43.939 --> 00:07:47.200 They tried to go away to the mountains for rest. 00:07:47.600 --> 00:07:49.020 And the crowd found them there. 00:07:49.060 --> 00:07:50.540 And that's why Jesus had to feed them 00:07:50.540 --> 00:07:53.580 because they were supposed to be away from the crowds. 00:07:56.500 --> like an unending rat race. 00:09:05.639 --> 00:09:11.419 Maybe you are in the process of feeling the wearying effect of aging 00:09:11.419 --> 00:09:16.299 and the ongoing capacity challenge of figuring out, 00:09:16.460 --> 00:09:20.519 what can I do and how can I continue to live and serve? 00:09:20.519 --> 00:09:23.419 Maybe some of you are facing cultural resistance 00:09:23.419 --> 00:09:25.840 and pushback for your life choices 00:09:25.840 --> 00:09:28.779 and living out your convictions in the world. 00:09:29.460 --> 00:09:33.860 Some of you may be drained and weary from your work here at church, 00:09:34.519 --> 00:09:37.579 the weariness of pouring out your life in love for others. 00:09:39.039 --> 00:09:43.600 Some of you are facing physical suffering of various kinds 00:09:43.600 --> 00:09:45.299 and are exhausted because of it. 00:09:46.100 --> 00:09:50.059 Some of you know the incredible exhaustion 00:09:50.059 --> 00:09:52.219 of relational trials, 00:09:53.219 --> 00:09:54.959 of broken relationships, 00:09:55.159 --> 00:09:55.879 of conflict, 00:09:56.599 --> 00:09:57.299 unresolved, 00:09:57.859 --> 00:09:58.679 hard work, 00:09:59.039 --> 00:10:00.299 trying to work through them. 00:10:01.679 --> 00:10:03.859 The disciples face their headwinds. 00:10:04.500 --> 00:10:05.899 We face ours. 00:10:07.279 --> 00:10:08.619 And Jesus has a plan. 00:10:10.239 --> 00:10:11.719 Jesus has a plan for them, 00:10:11.819 --> 00:10:14.079 but it is not the plan that we most want them to see. 00:10:14.479 --> 00:10:15.859 So what Jesus did, right, 00:10:15.899 --> 00:10:19.079 he saw them with the crowd and he sent them away, right? 00:10:19.080 --> 00:10:23.520 He wasn't interested in them being able to bask in the glory of feeding the 5,000. 00:10:26.820 --> 00:10:28.220 And he sends them into a storm. 00:10:28.620 --> 00:10:29.960 And Jesus isn't dumb. 00:10:30.240 --> 00:10:32.740 He knows that the storm might, 00:10:32.860 --> 00:10:34.080 that the wind might come up. 00:10:34.120 --> 00:10:34.500 In fact, 00:10:34.540 --> 00:10:35.700 it was fairly well known. 00:10:35.820 --> 00:10:37.080 If you're a fisherman on, 00:10:37.080 --> 00:10:38.240 on the Sea of Galilee, 00:10:38.360 --> 00:10:39.060 that at night, 00:10:39.180 --> 00:10:42.220 there was a strong wind that would often come up at sundown. disciples, 00:11:08.399 --> 00:11:09.359 he said to the crowds, 00:11:09.479 --> 00:11:11.559 all you who are weary and heavy laden, 00:11:11.719 --> 00:11:16.519 knowing that this weariness and burden bearing will be a part of life in this world. 00:11:17.779 --> 00:11:21.379 Do not be surprised when you face these various trials. 00:11:22.819 --> 00:11:26.759 But Jesus sent them out where he knows they will face a difficulty. 00:11:26.759 --> 00:11:29.919 And instead of going with them or even warning them, 00:11:30.000 --> 00:11:31.360 he goes in another direction. 00:11:31.980 --> 00:11:34.259 He goes up onto a mountain to pray. 00:11:35.080 --> 00:11:38.500 Because Jesus knows that his greatest need in that moment 00:11:38.500 --> 00:11:41.980 is to go be with his heavenly --> 00:11:51.179 as he, 00:11:51.360 --> 00:11:53.519 the incarnate son of God walks the earth. 00:11:53.519 --> 00:11:56.860 So Mark tells this story. 00:11:57.519 --> 00:11:58.579 They're out on the boat. 00:11:58.819 --> 00:11:59.559 He's up on the mountain. 00:11:59.659 --> 00:12:00.419 He comes down. 00:12:00.559 --> 00:12:01.120 It appears. 00:12:01.240 --> 00:12:02.819 It's not clear exactly
