As part of his duties, he regularly dusted, in fact I think 00:00:14.839 --> 00:00:21.420 he dusted daily and he polished pretty regularly, a World War II bomb that had been dropped on the 00:00:21.420 --> 00:00:27.900 grounds of Belton House by German bombers. One day, while polishing this thing, he actually 00:00:27.899 --> 00:00:33.199 managed to even knock it over and it fell on his foot while he was cleaning, so it caused him a 00:00:33.199 --> 00:00:40.280 great deal of damage. Anyway, one Easter weekend, something like 24 years after it was put on display 00:00:40.280 --> 00:00:49.700 at the house, an army officer was visiting Belton House and this officer noticed to his horror that 00:00:49.700 --> 00:00:59.300 this bomb was in fact still life and was capable of levelling the entire estate. The place was 00:00:59.300 --> 00:01:05.299 evacuated, as you can imagine, and the Royal Air Force, the bomb disposal unit was called in and 00:01:05.299 --> 00:01:13.620 the bomb was disposed of. But imagine discovering that you've been cleaning this thing with chemicals 00:01:13.620 --> 00:01:22.380 for 24 years, polishing a live bomb that, and you've even dropped this thing on your foot, and at any 00:01:22.380 --> 00:01:31.719 point this thing could have exploded. It's possible to live with danger and to be totally unaware of it. 00:01:32.740 --> 00:01:40.080 In fact, we can even convince ourselves that we are indestructible, that things will go on as they are 00:01:40.079 --> 00:01:47.379 forever. The number of people that I've dealt with as a pastor over the years, who even in their senior 00:01:47.379 --> 00:02:00.299 years, still assume that they are indestructible. And it takes an expert analysis, a medical specialist, 00:02:01.579 --> 00:02:09.659 or an apocalypse to persuade us of an alternative view. Apocalypse is a Greek word, 00:02:10.080 --> 00:02:19.720 which means revelation. It means unveiling of things that were not previously known and which cannot be 00:02:19.720 --> 00:02:30.700 known unless they are unveiled to us. And that's what the book of Revelation is. This book is not given 00:02:30.700 --> 00:02:40.060 to us to satisfy our curiosity about events in the future. It is given to open our eyes. 00:02:40.080 --> 00:02:50.740 to prod us to come awake to reality and to stimulate reforming actions in our lives. 00:02:51.720 --> 00:02:58.200 What the book of Revelation does for us and what it's been doing for us in these past weeks is opening 00:02:58.200 --> 00:03:06.560 our eyes to the Christian worldview. And that worldview, very simply, is that the crucified, 00:03:06.560 --> 00:03:16.580 resurrected Jesus of Nazareth, who was in history, died in history, rose in history, is the one who now 00:03:16.580 --> 00:03:28.039 has ascended and reigns over all history and time in eternity. His people suffer on earth with joy while 00:03:28.039 --> 00:03:35.080 being threatened and seduced by the powers and the cultures of their day, whatever it is and wherever 00:03:35.080 --> 00:03:43.939 they are in the world. And yet what we also discover is that this God is in control at every point 00:03:43.939 --> 00:03:49.939 throughout the chaos of history. And he has declared that he will come again and he will judge all 00:03:49.939 --> 00:03:57.540 humanity and wind up history as we know it. And the call of Revelation is for Christians to remain faithful to 00:03:57.539 --> 00:04:04.500 the good news. And the good news about Jesus and the good news about him as we wait for his return to wind up history 00:04:04.500 --> 00:04:13.979 and bring us into his perfect presence forever. And so the challenge of Revelation all the way through, 00:04:13.979 --> 00:04:29.399 on every occasion, as it is again today, live for the lamb, not for the beast. That's the challenge. 00:04:31.500 --> 00:04:39.740 Live for the bride, groom, not the prostitute. Eternal things, not temporal, to please God rather than 00:04:39.740 --> 00:04:47.240 anger him for his eternal city rather than the lake of fire. That's the call right through Revelation 00:04:47.240 --> 00:04:53.040 as we have had right from the beginning. And so now as we come to the end, we get to the final 00:04:53.040 --> 00:05:01.259 destination. That's where we're up to, the final destination. So I've got an outline for today's talk 00:05:01.259 --> 00:05:06.079 on the St. Paul's app. It'd be good if you could go there. Also get your Bibles open. We're looking 00:05:06.079 --> 00:05:13.180 sort of across Revelation 17 to 19. You'll notice three points in the app. The prostitute and our 00:05:13.180 --> 00:05:20.800 problem, the lamb and our solution, and the bride and living for future hope. So first of all, and most 00:05:20.800 --> 00:05:28.139 of the time is on the prostitute and our problem. Chapters 17 and 18, we're introduced to a new figure 00:05:28.139 --> 00:05:39.159 in the storyline. It's a woman. She's mysterious, but her title captures for us who she is. 17 verse 5, 00:05:40.120 --> 00:05:47.839 Babylon the Great, the mother of prostitutes and of the abominations of the earth. 00:05:47.839 --> 00:06:02.279 Now, it is possible for us to plunge into the extravagant imagery of these chapters to try and 00:06:02.279 --> 00:06:11.199 come up with an impressive display of convincing explanation of exactly who in history this woman 00:06:11.199 --> 00:06:20.379 is astride and who the scarlet beast is, as well as the seven heads, the seven hills, the seven kings, 00:06:20.519 --> 00:06:25.579 Babylon, and all the rest. What we need to do with the book of Revelation, I said right from the 00:06:25.579 --> 00:06:34.199 beginning, is to step back. Just step back and have a look. Notice, as you read through the text, 00:06:34.199 --> 00:06:41.199 the seven of the book of Revelation, the seven kings, the seven kings, the seven kings, and the seven kings, 00:06:41.199 --> 00:06:46.180 the seven kings, and the seven kings, and the seven kings. The seven kings, the seven kings, and the seven kings. 00:06:46.180 --> 00:06:56.519 This woman represents the problem with the world. Twice in chapter 17, verse 8, we're told that the beast 00:06:56.519 --> 00:07:08.799 once was, now is, and yet will come. In other words, this beast manifests itself in one form, 00:07:09.039 --> 00:07:17.959 then it passes away, and then it will come back in other forms. That is, this is just simply another 00:07:17.959 --> 00:07:24.479 one of the parodies of God that we've had right through, as we read in chapters 1, 4, and 11. 00:07:24.480 --> 00:07:34.020 In chapter 17, verses 10 and 12, the angel speaks of coming kings and transfers of power. 00:07:34.740 --> 00:07:42.780 In Daniel 7, in the Old Testament, the same language is used to describe successive kingdoms and empires. 00:07:45.000 --> 00:07:52.319 The symbolic numbers 7 and 10 in Revelation 17 don't refer to specific kings. 00:07:52.319 --> 00:08:04.339 Instead, John is highlighting the way that the beast manifests itself in power in reoccurring 00:08:04.339 --> 00:08:09.500 political empires and systems and societies throughout history. 00:08:09.500 --> 00:08:23.100 Even though the woman, even though the woman rides on the beast and rules over the kings in 17, verse 7, 00:08:23.480 --> 00:08:33.519 and then again in verse 18, we see in verse 16 of chapter 17, that they turn on her and they destroy her. 00:08:33.519 --> 00:08:39.360 Such as the city of Rome itself. 00:08:40.639 --> 00:08:47.759 The all-powerful Rome, which is in the background here as John receives this revelation. 00:08:49.199 --> 00:08:56.559 Rome itself will be destroyed by the very empire it built in AD 410. 00:08:56.559 --> 00:09:02.179 What we see here is Babylon. 00:09:02.939 --> 00:09:09.779 In chapters 17 and 18, it represents human society without God. 00:09:10.679 --> 00:09:17.059 Human society with all its violence and oppression and corruption and injustice and rejection of God. 00:09:17.059 --> 00:09:19.539 And it's saying here, societies come and go. 00:09:21.339 --> 00:09:23.479 Kingdoms rise and they fall. 00:09:25.019 --> 00:09:28.159 And it will go on and on and on. 00:09:28.239 --> 00:09:33.039 And each one in its various forms will do exactly the same. 00:09:34.059 --> 00:09:36.379 Stand against God as rule of all. 00:09:36.379 --> 00:09:47.259 See, what happens here with the book of Revelation is that the major themes that are set up at the beginning of the Bible 00:09:47.259 --> 00:09:53.259 sort of all get intertwined and come to their conclusion at the end of the Bible. 00:09:55.600 --> 00:09:57.299 The threads all come together. 00:09:57.299 --> 00:10:11.259 The theme of Babylon and society against God is drawn to a close here as well as they celebrate in chapter 19, the end of Babylon. 00:10:13.899 --> 00:10:18.939 Babylon features in the Bible as early as Genesis chapter 10, verse 10. 00:10:18.940 --> 00:10:24.780 And it is likely linked to the Tower of Babel in Genesis 11. 00:10:25.660 --> 00:10:40.020 The symbol of the godless society, proud society in its attempt to storm the heavens, dethrone God and take glory for themselves and make a name for themselves. 00:10:41.360 --> 00:10:43.740 Babel and Babylon are interchangeable. 00:10:43.740 --> 00:10:54.779 Throughout the Bible, Babylon came to stand for all that oppose God, all the empires and societies and peoples that oppose God. 00:10:55.560 --> 00:11:03.860 Daniel chapter 4, verse 30 is a great example where we have the egotistical Nebuchadnezzar declaring, 00:11:04.259 --> 00:11:09.620 Is not this the great Babylon that I have built as my royal residence? 00:11:09.620 --> 00:11:16.320 By my mighty power and for the glory of my majesty. 00:11:18.320 --> 00:11:32.240 All this sin of human society, all of its rejection of God the creator is in chapter 19, verse 2, described as adultery. 00:11:33.639 --> 00:11:34.440 Prostitution. 00:11:34.440 --> 00:11:34.520 Prostitution. 00:11:35.720 --> 00:11:39.720 All human sin is described as adultery. 00:11:40.000 --> 00:11:41.520 Prostitution against God. 00:11:41.820 --> 00:11:46.160 And this too is one of the great themes of the Bible from beginning to end. 00:11:46.800 --> 00:11:58.460 What we see in the Bible is that God doesn't relate to people primarily as a king to subjects or even as a shepherd to his sheep, but as a husband to a wife. 00:11:58.460 --> 00:12:13.500 God's plan from the beginning of creation was to have a solemn and a binding relationship with his people as binding and as comprehensive and as intimate as marriage. 00:12:13.759 --> 00:12:17.540 It's the kind of relationship with God that we were created for. 00:12:17.539 --> 00:12:30.439 No other amongst his church. 00:17:47.879 --> 00:17:53.980 The one who is said in John's gospel, the disciple who Jesus specifically loved. 00:17:54.279 --> 00:18:01.679 We are told here when he gets a vision of this prostitute riding the beast, he is mesmerized. 00:18:02.819 --> 00:18:04.480 Verse 6, chapter 17. 00:18:04.579 --> 00:18:08.039 When I saw her, I was greatly astonished. 00:18:09.899 --> 00:18:10.419 Attracted. 00:18:12.079 --> 00:18:15.559 And then the angel said to me, why are you astonished? 00:18:16.839 --> 00:18:20.939 The power and the glory of the human society is seductive. 00:18:20.939 --> 00:18:25.399 Even John needed the angel to grab him and slap him out of it. 00:18:25.400 --> 00:18:35.680 And so that's why it's crucial that we see in chapters 18 and 19 the end of 00:18:54.279 Then a mighty angel picked up a boulder the size of a large millstone, threw it into the sea, and said, 00:18:54.500 --> 00:18:59.680 With such violence the great city of Babylon will be thrown down, never to be found again. 00:19:01.259 --> 00:19:03.200 Now this is not rising and falling. 00:19:03.600 --> 00:19:06.740 This is never to be found again. 00:19:06.820 --> 00:19:07.600 00:19:35.980 In other words, no continuing on in society, no joy, no celebration. 00:19:35.980 --> 00:19:38.900 Your merchants were the world's important people. 00:19:39.220 --> 00:19:41.000 The rich people were the important people. 00:19:41.319 --> 00:19:46.460 But by your magic spell, all the nations were led astray. 00:19:47.559 --> 00:19:50.339 The point is, it will come to naught. 00:19:51.700 --> 00:19:55.880 It promises so much, and it delivers death and destruction. 00:19:56.880 --> 00:20:02.420 Revelation, this book, wakes us up to the fact that we are living with danger every single day, 00:20:02.420 --> 00:20:06.300 and we cannot see it, and the point of revelation is to help us see it. 00:20:06.660 --> 00:20:11.500 We are polishing the bomb every day of our life. 00:20:16.039 --> 00:20:21.880 And what this book tells us is the author of time itself had to be written into the very drama 00:20:21.880 --> 00:20:23.480 to help us to see it. 00:20:23.480 --> week. 00:21:08.799 --> 00:21:14.339 And that's advertisements for coffee, cars, phones, holidays, cosmetics, and shoes. 00:21:16.139 --> 00:21:17.819 It's appalling. 00:21:19.220 --> 00:21:26.779 $10 billion a year is spent on advertising in this country alone 00:21:26.779 --> 00:21:33.220 with quasi-religious promises of meaning and fulfillment and hope 00:21:33.220 --> 00:21:36.680 in items that give 2% of their income to world mission. 00:22:03.980 --> 00:22:07.279 Now, we've got to bear in mind here that Revelation chapter 5, 00:22:07.380 --> 00:22:10.440 as we've already seen, is that mission to the nations 00:22:10.440 --> 00:22:14.620 is part of what it means to grapple with the cross. 00:22:16.579 --> 00:22:19.400 It's part of what it means to come to Christ. 00:22:20.680 --> 00:22:24.700 And yet, every $100 that American Christians earn, 00:22:24.700 --> 00:22:30.600 they give 5 cents to global mission. 00:22:31.059 --> 00:22:31.799 5 cents. 00:22:38.220 --> 00:22:40.980 Surely, that's got to be a good measure to the extent 00:22:40.980 --> 00:22:43.299 by which we are seduced by Babylon 00:22:43.299 --> 00:22:47.100 rather than being captured by a biblical worldview represents our biggest problem, 00:23:28.839 --> 00:23:30.640 that is, spiritual adultery. 00:23:31.279 --> 00:23:34.920 We are given the solution to our biggest problem in the lamb. 00:23:35.440 --> 00:23:37.079 The only thing that can turn us 00:23:37.079 --> 00:23:39.600 from spiritual adulterers, prostitutes, 00:23:39.599 --> 00:23:41.000 into a pure bride, 00:23:41.199 --> 00:23:42.480 is the blood of Christ. 00:23:43.480 --> 00:23:46.500 The one whom Revelation has already declared earlier on 00:23:46.500 --> 00:23:47.719 as the lamb of God. 00:23:48.240 --> 00:23:50.639 The lamb is the only one 00:23:50.639 --> 00:23:56.039 who can cure us from our fatal attraction to Babylon. 00:23:58.399 --> 00:24:00.399 Now, the John who wrote this vision, 00:24:00.939 --> 00:24:01.980 this vision was given to, 00:24:02.279 --> 00:24:04.779 also is the John who wrote the Gospel of John. 00:24:05.199 --> 00:24:07.119 And so, as we come to chapter 19, 00:24:07.119 --> 00:24:11.439 what is sitting in the background of Revelation 19 00:24:11.439 --> 00:24:13.979 is John chapter 2 00:24:13.979 --> 00:24:17.179 and the wedding at Cana in Galilee. 00:24:17.719 --> 00:24:18.779 Now, this is the wedding 00:24:18.779 --> 00:24:22.059 where they run out of wine 00:24:22.059 --> 00:24:26.219 and Mary comes to Jesus and says, 00:24:26.899 --> 00:24:28.039 you might want to do something about
