look at Peter. 00:01:36.299 --> 00:01:46.179 The proclamation or preaching of God's Word has been the means by which people hear and come to know the risen Christ as Savior and Lord. 00:01:46.340 --> said wait for the coming of the Holy Spirit. 00:02:44.020 --> 00:02:45.259 Ten days transpired. 00:02:45.879 --> 00:02:52.120 And then we read last time how the Holy Spirit descended on the church at Pentecost. 00:02:53.139 --> 00:02:56.099 So after Jesus ascends to heaven, 00:02:56.500 --> 00:02:57.960 the disciples are given the Holy Spirit. 00:02:58.379 --> 00:03:03.620 Peter rises up and he gives the first sermon of the Christian church. 00:03:04.199 --> 00:03:07.360 He gives a speech, an oration, 00:03:07.900 --> 00:03:11.579 that we will see absolutely grips the listeners. 00:03:11.939 --> 00:03:18.780 In this speech, in this sermon, as he preaches, 00:03:19.259 --> 00:03:22.539 he proclaims three things about the risen and ascended Christ. 00:03:22.960 --> 00:03:26.859 That not only prove that Jesus was indeed both Messiah and Lord, 00:03:28.020 --> 00:03:33.340 but that in Jesus all of our deepest problems are exposed 00:03:33.340 --> 00:03:36.439 and our deepest longings are fulfilled. 00:03:36.439 --> 00:03:42.400 So Peter, and these are the three points because you've got to have some points. 00:03:43.039 --> 00:03:46.580 Peter proclaims Christ's life and death. 00:03:47.420 --> 00:03:51.159 Peter also proclaims Christ's resurrection and ascension. 00:03:51.159 --> 00:04:00.019 And Peter proclaims divine salvation that has both personal and communal There's some people that are criticizing them and making fun of them. 00:04:48.819 --> 00:04:50.779 And they say, these guys are drunk. 00:04:51.399 --> 00:04:54.439 Like, it's very clear they're not drunk. 00:04:54.860 --> 00:04:56.000 It's too early in the morning. 00:04:56.000 --> 00:05:01.100 And it's not like they're doing something that would look like a drunk person would do. 00:05:01.199 --> 00:05:04.620 But what they're trying to do is totally just dispel them, 00:05:05.680 --> 00:05:07.779 you know, marginalize them, put them to the side, 00:05:07.899 --> 00:05:09.300 make little of what is happening. 00:05:10.439 --> 00:05:15.079 So Peter stands up and he proclaims that not at all are we drunk. 00:05:15.180 --> 00:05:19.220 In fact, this is a fulfillment of a prophecy. prior. 00:05:29.120 --> 00:05:32.180 And he goes on to read from Joel chapter 2 00:05:32.180 --> 00:05:36.699 and explain that what has happened at Pentecost was foreordained by God 00:05:36.699 --> 00:05:40.919 and that this was the beginning of the last days, 00:05:41.539 --> 00:05:43.299 the beginning of the end. 00:05:43.300 --> 00:05:50.699 Just on an aside before we jump back into our text, were known to the inhabitants of Jerusalem, to his speakers. 00:07:29.199 --> 00:07:33.860 Peter says that Jesus of Nazareth was sent by God to perform miraculous deeds, 00:07:34.959 --> 00:07:38.339 and that would attest to God's power and truth, 00:07:38.579 --> 00:07:41.379 but also cause astonishment among the peoples. 00:07:41.379 --> 00:07:46.519 That's the signs and the wonders that Peter references here. 00:07:46.519 --> 00:07:51.539 Jesus met people in their lowest moments. 00:07:51.779 --> 00:07:54.000 I mean, we just read from Matthew chapter 9, 00:07:54.399 --> 00:07:58.399 the gospel reading, where Jesus meets a paralyzed man who can do nothing. 00:07:58.539 --> 00:08:00.099 He meets people right where they're at. 00:08:01.319 --> 00:08:02.339 He heals them. 00:08:02.500 --> 00:08:07.319 He preaches to them and challenges them also to change their worldview, 00:08:07.879 --> 00:08:11.759 to get on board with the gospel and the kingdom of God. 00:08:11.839 --> 00:08:13.419 That's what he came to do. 00:08:13.659 --> 00:08:14.979 That's what he did in Nazareth. 00:08:14.980 --> 00:08:20.000 That's what he did as he came to Jerusalem in the last week of his life. 00:08:21.560 --> 00:08:26.500 No one could deny that there was buzz around Jesus before he was crucified, 00:08:27.460 --> 00:08:32.379 spreading all over the land from the north all the way to --> 00:12:26.000 There are other people that would perform, quote-unquote, miracles. 00:12:26.220 --> 00:12:27.519 There are other people that would preach 00:12:27.519 --> 00:12:33.540 and be kind of renowned rabbis of renown. 00:12:33.680 --> 00:12:38.360 So what made it so that Jesus himself would die on the cross? 00:12:38.460 --> 00:12:41.879 This is how Peter is leading his hearers. 00:13:06.040 --> 00:13:08.180 but by and large you would say Jesus, the Son of God. 00:13:08.600 --> 00:13:12.480 It's kind of like baked within our cultural received knowledge. 00:13:12.720 --> 00:13:14.019 But ask the question, 00:13:14.019 --> 00:13:16.460 and I think even as mature believers, 00:13:16.639 --> 00:13:17.440 ask the question, 00:13:17.840 --> 00:13:19.180 who really was Jesus? 00:13:19.179 --> 00:13:22.059 Was he a miracle worker? 00:13:23.579 --> 00:13:24.979 Was that all he did? 00:13:25.199 --> 00:13:27.199 Was he a messianic pretender? 00:13:28.199 --> 00:13:33.319 Was he a great moral teacher or philosopher like Socrates or Plutarch? 00:13:33.320 --> 00:13:39.560 This is the question we must go to the scriptures to time and again, 00:13:39.640 --> 00:13:42.520 if we are to walk in the truth. 00:13:44.680 --> 00:13:49.040 Peter will spend the next 13 verses explaining and proving who Jesus was 00:13:49.040 --> 00:13:52.240 by proclaiming the God in the flesh. 00:16:08.639 --> 00:16:10.240 Death tried to swallow him up, 00:16:10.919 --> 00:16:14.360 but God cannot be swallowed by death, 00:16:14.439 --> 00:16:16.000 because he is the
