be wondering why we're reading a passage about Jesus' transfiguration on Easter Sunday, 00:04:12.439 --> 00:04:15.319 when we're supposed to be celebrating his resurrection in particular. 00:04:16.139 --> 00:04:19.519 And I have some good reasons for that. 00:04:19.519 --> 00:04:25.719 But one of the reasons is, one is, it does happen to be the passage that we're on, 00:04:25.919 --> 00:04:27.180 going through the Gospel of Luke. 00:04:27.560 --> 00:04:31.039 And it's actually very related to the resurrection account, 00:04:31.159 --> 00:04:36.620 because this is really the first glimpse we see of the glory of the risen Lord, 00:04:36.699 --> 00:04:40.240 which we'll see in fullness after the resurrection and his ascension. 00:04:41.039 --> 00:04:44.899 And we do celebrate the resurrection of the Lord every Sunday, 00:04:45.439 --> 00:04:48.199 as we gather to worship him on the first day of the week. 00:04:48.199 --> 00:04:55.099 And the main point of this passage for us is that we should take up our cross daily 00:04:55.099 --> 00:05:00.199 and follow Jesus, looking forward to the glorious kingdom of the Son of God. 00:05:00.980 --> 00:05:06.039 As we do that, we're called to pray with Jesus, to see Jesus in his glory, 00:05:06.099 --> 00:05:09.199 and to listen to Jesus, as this passage tells us. 00:05:09.219 --> 00:05:14.459 So first, let's look at how we are to pray in anticipation of the fullness of Jesus' glorious kingdom. 00:05:14.459 --> 00:05:21.159 In verse 22, Jesus predicted his resurrection by saying that he will suffer, 00:05:21.799 --> 00:05:23.519 be rejected, and killed. 00:05:24.079 --> 00:05:26.339 But then on the third day, be raised. 00:05:26.459 --> 00:05:30.399 So here, this is the first anticipation of Jesus' coming resurrection. 00:05:31.139 --> 00:05:34.539 And then after telling his disciples to follow his example of 00:05:34.539 --> 00:05:37.279 carrying the cross of humble submission to God, 00:05:37.279 --> 00:05:39.839 Jesus promised in verse 27, 00:05:40.359 --> 00:05:45.259 But I tell you truly, there are some standing here who will not taste death 00:05:45.259 --> 00:05:47.459 until they see the kingdom of God. 00:05:48.199 --> 00:05:55.119 So some among Jesus' 12 apostles will see the kingdom of God before they die. 00:05:56.399 --> 00:06:00.339 And there are people who make careers, academic careers, 00:06:00.439 --> 00:06:03.799 out of pointing out perceived errors and contradictions in the Bible. 00:06:03.800 --> 00:06:06.840 And this verse is one of their favorite go-to examples. 00:06:07.840 --> 00:06:10.740 You see, Jesus thought that the full consummated kingdom 00:06:10.740 --> 00:06:13.280 will come during the lifetime of his followers, they say. 00:06:13.680 --> 00:06:15.900 He thought that he would return to judge the world 00:06:15.900 --> 00:06:18.319 before all of his apostles have died. 00:06:18.680 --> 00:06:20.240 But that didn't happen, did it? 00:06:22.340 --> 00:06:25.259 But such an argument betrays a shallow understanding 00:06:25.259 --> 00:06:27.800 of the Gospel of Luke and the Gospels in general. 00:06:28.460 --> 00:06:31.680 There's a reason why in all three of the Gospels 00:06:31.680 --> 00:06:35.459 that include this account of Jesus' transfiguration. 00:06:35.959 --> 00:06:38.180 The transfiguration is preceded by, 00:06:38.480 --> 00:06:42.060 immediately by Peter's confession that Jesus is the Christ of God. 00:06:42.480 --> 00:06:45.939 And secondly, Jesus' prediction of his suffering, death, and resurrection. 00:06:46.579 --> 00:06:50.360 And then third, the invitation to his disciples to carry the cross and follow him. 00:06:50.759 --> 00:06:54.180 And finally, Jesus' promise that there are some 00:06:54.180 --> 00:06:56.860 standing here with him who will not taste death 00:06:56.860 --> 00:06:58.180 until they see the kingdom of God. 00:06:58.180 --> 00:07:01.100 All of those events come together because they're interconnected. 00:07:01.720 --> 00:07:05.400 And the transfiguration is actually a partial fulfillment 00:07:05.400 --> 00:07:07.160 of Jesus' promise 00:07:07.160 --> 00:07:11.160 that some of his disciples will see the kingdom of God before their death. 00:07:12.280 --> 00:07:15.939 It's not the full fulfillment of his promise. 00:07:16.019 --> 00:07:20.079 That happens at Jesus' death, resurrection, and his ascension to heaven, 00:07:20.280 --> 00:07:23.139 which is connected to the coming down of the Holy Spirit. 00:07:23.139 --> 00:07:28.939 And that's why at his trial before the Jewish council in Luke 22, 69, 00:07:29.139 --> 00:07:29.719 Jesus says, 00:07:30.159 --> 00:07:36.319 But from now on, the Son of Man shall be seated at the right hand of the power of God. 00:07:36.740 --> 00:07:39.500 That's the reference to Jesus' enthronement, 00:07:39.620 --> 00:07:41.199 reigning with the authority of God. 00:07:41.539 --> 00:07:44.240 And so it's after his death and resurrection ascension 00:07:44.240 --> 00:07:47.719 that Jesus begins his reign over the kingdom of God. 00:07:47.720 --> 00:07:51.940 And that's why in his sequel to the gospel of Luke, Acts, 00:07:52.060 --> 00:07:53.640 the book of Acts that Luke also wrote, 00:07:54.060 --> 00:07:56.140 he writes in chapter 2, 32, 33, 00:07:56.340 --> 00:07:58.020 This Jesus God raised up, 00:07:58.320 --> 00:07:59.820 and of that we are witnesses, 00:08:00.080 --> 00:08:02.300 being therefore exalted at the right hand of God, 00:08:02.560 --> 00:08:05.460 and having received from the Father the promise of the Holy Spirit, 00:08:05.720 --> 00:08:09.120 he has poured out this that you yourselves are seeing and hearing. 00:08:10.120 --> 00:08:12.260 And since his resurrection and ascension, 00:08:12.480 --> 00:08:14.940 Jesus has been reigning over his kingdom 00:08:14.940 --> 00:08:16.940 at the right hand of the Father. 00:08:16.939 --> 00:08:19.740 And since all 12 of his transfiguration that takes place today in our passage 00:08:37.019 --> 00:08:41.139 is a preview of that glorious kingdom of the Son of God. 00:08:41.700 --> 00:08:43.919 Notice in verses 30 and 31, 00:08:43.919 --> 00:08:47.659 Moses and Elijah are talking to Jesus about his departure, 00:08:48.019 --> 00:08:50.279 reference to his resurrection and ascension. 00:08:51.419 --> 00:08:52.939 And trailer. 00:09:08.259 --> 00:09:10.899 And the trailer is about a few minutes long, 00:09:10.960 --> 00:09:12.840 and the details are a little sketchy, 00:09:13.180 --> 00:09:16.100 but it gives you just a glimpse of the real thing 00:09:16.100 --> 00:09:17.660 to tell you, hey, it's here. 00:09:17.659 --> 00:09:22.439 And the transfiguration is like the trailer 00:09:22.439 --> 00:09:25.879 of the coming death, resurrection, and ascension of Jesus, 00:09:26.039 --> 00:09:26.759 which is the movie. 00:09:27.399 --> 00:09:28.740 And then when you see the movie, 00:09:28.860 --> 00:09:29.879 it turns out, lo and behold, 00:09:29.959 --> 00:09:31.879 you discover that it's actually a two-part movie. 00:09:33.600 --> 00:09:35.639 Sounds familiar to some of you. 00:09:35.980 --> 00:09:38.219 And the sequel will be released at a later point, 00:09:38.299 --> 00:09:40.600 and that sequel is Jesus' second coming. 00:09:40.980 --> 00:09:42.399 So these are all interconnected. 00:09:42.639 --> 00:10:47.139 they mentioned the glory of Jesus and a cloud enveloping them. 00:10:47.659 --> 00:10:50.879 And at his ascension, it says in Acts 1.9, 00:10:51.179 --> 00:10:52.439 as the apostles were looking on, 00:10:52.519 --> 00:10:53.720 Jesus was lifted up, 00:10:53.939 --> 00:10:57.360 and a cloud took him out of their sight. 00:10:57.360 --> 00:11:01.779 And at his ascension, right? 00:11:03.139 --> 00:11:04.820 This cloud takes him out of sight. 00:11:04.919 --> 00:11:07.120 And later in Luke 21, 27, 00:11:07.500 --> 00:11:09.539 when Jesus speaks of his second coming, 00:11:10.039 --> 00:11:11.639 again, similar themes emerge. 00:11:11.740 --> 00:11:14.580 And then they will see the Son of Man coming in a cloud 00:11:14.580 --> 00:11:17.820 with power and great glory. 00:11:17.820 --> 00:11:21.500 So Luke masterfully weaves these parallels 00:11:21.500 --> 00:11:24.680 between the transfiguration to the resurrection 00:11:24.680 --> 00:11:27.540 and to the ascension and even his second coming 00:11:27.540 --> 00:11:30.140 to show us, to give us a foretaste 00:11:30.140 --> 00:11:32.920 of the glorious kingdom of the Son of God. 00:11:33.760 --> 00:11:35.280 And with that context in mind, 00:11:35.360 --> 00:11:38.460 Luke teaches us a lesson about how we have to wait for that, 00:11:39.400 --> 00:11:41.700 how we have to watch and pray.
