thinking this week a lot about this verse in 1 Corinthians 3. 00:05:22.420 --> 00:05:30.740 It's a new community of Christians in Corinth, all of them converts from their former Greco-Roman 00:05:30.740 --> 00:05:31.439 way of life. 00:05:32.480 --> 00:05:37.759 And Paul, the Apostle Paul, compares them to a new tree, this living organism. 00:05:37.759 --> 00:05:45.139 And he says, you know, there's been all these people that have planted the church, that have 00:05:45.139 --> 00:05:46.039 watered the church. 00:05:47.099 --> 00:05:53.159 But then Paul says, so neither the one who plants nor the one who waters is anything, but 00:05:53.159 --> 00:05:55.620 only God who makes things grow. 00:05:56.519 --> 00:05:58.879 And I just, my prayer all week has been, only God. 00:05:59.740 --> 00:06:03.439 You know, and that's really our heart today in this worship service, is we just want to 00:06:03.439 --> 00:06:09.060 thank only God and praise only God because only he's together with his disciples. 00:06:46.939 --> 00:06:50.780 And he's showing them the kind of life he wants them to live. 00:06:51.240 --> 00:06:58.980 And so what I want to talk about today is fishing with Jesus, eating near Jesus, and shepherding 00:06:58.980 --> 00:06:59.760 under Jesus. 00:06:59.759 --> 00:07:01.379 And you can just kind of track. 00:07:01.639 --> 00:07:03.379 These are the three movements of this text. 00:07:04.500 --> 00:07:08.500 Fishing with Jesus, eating near Jesus, and shepherding under Jesus. 00:07:09.180 --> 00:07:11.399 And let's start with fishing with Jesus. 00:07:12.500 --> 00:07:13.680 What is this story for? 00:07:13.779 --> 00:07:15.599 Why was this story written down for us? 00:07:16.240 --> 00:07:23.360 Well, it says explicitly in verse 1 that afterward, Jesus appeared again to his disciples by the 00:07:23.360 --> 00:07:24.120 Sea of Galilee. 00:07:24.120 --> 00:07:26.480 And this is the way it happened. 00:07:26.600 --> 00:07:31.699 And then down in verse 14, it says, this was now the third time Jesus appeared to his disciples 00:07:31.699 --> 00:07:34.180 after he was raised from the dead. 00:07:34.180 --> 00:07:43.980 So on Easter Sunday, God literally, physically, historically raised Jesus from the dead. 00:07:43.980 --> 00:07:53.580 And after that great event, Jesus is now coming to individuals and pairs and groups of disciples 00:07:53.580 --> 00:08:01.420 in order that he might convince them that he really has been glorified, that this body of 00:08:01.420 --> 00:08:04.960 his is an incorruptible and victorious body. 00:08:04.959 --> 00:08:11.239 And it's the prototype of the kind of bodies that his disciples are going to have when they're 00:08:11.239 --> 00:08:12.719 raised at the end of time. 00:08:12.720 --> 00:08:21.300 It's like Jesus is coming to them and he's wanting to convince them that even though sin and death 00:08:21.300 --> 00:08:26.600 had been ruling over this world for a very, very long time, through his cross and through his 00:08:26.600 --> 00:08:28.620 resurrection, sin and death had been overthrown. 00:08:29.500 --> 00:08:32.360 And now there's a new king. 00:08:32.560 --> 00:08:33.899 There's a new Lord. 00:08:34.160 --> 00:08:36.080 And he's reigning in grace. 00:08:36.519 --> 00:08:37.600 He's reigning in righteousness. 00:08:37.800 --> 00:08:41.500 He's wanting to share his eternal life with his disciples. 00:08:41.500 --> 00:08:46.799 And so Jesus just keeps appearing to them and trying to convince them of these things. 00:08:47.679 --> 00:08:52.740 And notice how he chooses to appear and reveal himself here in this story. 00:08:52.860 --> 00:08:57.340 It says in verse 3, Simon Peter told the rest of the disciples, 00:08:57.440 --> 00:08:58.320 I'm going out to fish. 00:08:59.399 --> 00:09:01.799 And they said, well, okay, we'll go along with you. 00:09:01.919 --> 00:09:03.600 And so they went out and they got into the boat. 00:09:03.840 --> 00:09:05.820 But that night they caught nothing. 00:09:06.460 --> 00:09:10.620 And early in the morning, Jesus stood on the shore, but the disciples did not realize that it was Jesus. 00:09:10.620 --> 00:09:15.100 And so he called out to them, friends, haven't you any fish? 00:09:15.120 --> 00:09:18.179 And what's interesting is that in the Greek text, he doesn't use the word friends. 00:09:18.279 --> 00:09:19.419 He uses the word kids. 00:09:20.600 --> 00:09:22.879 And the question sounds like this. 00:09:22.980 --> 00:09:26.519 Children, you have no fish, have you? 00:09:27.740 --> 00:09:34.299 It's this really playful and provocative thing that the resurrected Jesus is doing with his disciples. 00:09:34.299 --> 00:09:37.039 Why is he asking the question this way? 00:09:37.120 --> 00:09:44.139 Why is he drawing attention to their fishing failure and to their empty nets and their empty boat? 00:09:44.879 --> 00:09:48.159 Verse 3 emphasizes they fished all night and they caught what? 00:09:48.879 --> 00:09:49.279 Nothing. 00:09:50.259 --> 00:09:55.839 It's the same word that Jesus used in the upper room when he said, apart from me, you can do nothing. 00:09:56.719 --> 00:10:00.439 In John 15, I'll just read a little bit more of that text. 00:10:00.440 --> 00:10:03.400 He's in the upper room with his disciples the night before he dies. 00:10:03.640 --> 00:10:06.780 And he says, no branch can bear fruit by itself. 00:10:07.680 --> 00:10:09.700 It must remain in the vine. 00:10:10.000 --> 00:10:12.660 And neither can you bear fruit unless you remain in me. 00:10:13.480 --> 00:10:14.380 I'm the vine. 00:10:14.660 --> 00:10:15.260 You are the branches. 00:10:15.400 --> 00:10:19.200 If you remain in me and I in you, you will bear much fruit. 00:10:19.840 --> 00:10:22.560 Apart from me, you can do nothing. 00:10:24.100 --> 00:10:28.820 See, the disciples have gone out fishing, but they're doing it by themselves. 00:10:28.820 --> 00:10:30.520 They're doing it apart from Jesus. 00:10:30.620 --> 00:10:33.920 They're doing it without the resurrected Jesus. 00:10:35.040 --> 00:10:36.300 And what is the result? 00:10:36.400 --> 00:10:39.640 The result is that they've caught nothing. 00:10:40.800 --> 00:10:45.140 And of course, you know, fishing in the Gospels, it's never just about fishing, is it? 00:10:45.920 --> 00:10:48.420 Because when Jesus first called these guys, what did he say? 00:10:48.500 --> 00:10:54.060 He said, come, come follow me and I will make you into fishers of men. 00:10:54.160 --> 00:10:57.560 Come follow me and I will send you out to fish for people. 00:10:57.559 --> 00:11:00.679 And that's the mission of the disciple community. 00:11:01.419 --> 00:11:05.459 That Jesus' disciples are to fish for people. 00:11:06.479 --> 00:11:12.059 But if we try to go fishing by ourselves, we try to fish apart from Jesus. 00:11:12.179 --> 00:11:15.099 And without Jesus, what are we going to catch? 00:11:16.279 --> 00:11:16.879 Nothing. 00:11:16.879 --> 00:11:25.320 If we try to bear fruit in our worship, in our fellowship, in our mission, apart from the living and life-giving vine, 00:11:25.919 --> 00:11:33.519 it's going to be like that moment where, you know, you see a tree that's bearing fruit and you pick a piece off and it looks so good. 00:11:33.799 --> 00:11:39.399 And then you bite into it and immediately you regret that decision and you just want to spit it out. 00:11:39.519 --> 00:11:40.620 That's what Jesus is saying. 00:11:40.620 --> 00:11:43.440 That's the kind of fruit you'll bear without me. 00:11:45.360 --> 00:11:53.940 And in the same way, Jesus is saying, if you try to go fishing for people, you're not really going to catch many people without me. 00:11:55.080 --> 00:12:01.440 Verse 6, he says, throw your net on the right side of the boat and you will find some. 00:12:01.440 --> 00:12:08.940 And, you know, when Jesus says this, every guy in the boat would immediately remember what happened the very first time. 00:12:09.440 --> 00:12:17.720 And I don't know if you remember that story, but it's in Luke chapter 5 where Jesus doesn't really know Peter very well. 00:12:18.240 --> 00:12:23.140 But he steps into Peter's boat and he starts giving Peter fishing advice. 00:12:23.380 --> 00:12:27.960 And Peter says, well, master, we've worked hard all night and we've caught, again, nothing. 00:12:27.960 --> 00:12:35.040 And Jesus tells Peter, well, put out into the deep water, which, by the way, no one fishes in the deep water. 00:12:35.200 --> 00:12:40.259 But he says, put out into the deep water and let down your nets for a catch. 00:12:40.600 --> 00:12:44.180 Now, Peter has spent his whole life fishing these waters. 00:12:45.320 --> 00:12:49.379 His father and his grandfather before him have been fishermen. 00:12:50.460 --> 00:12:54.220 Peter knows how to make a good living at fishing. 00:12:54.220 --> 00:12:58.420 Peter has a thriving and a profitable fishing business. 00:12:58.540 --> 00:13:01.240 And he knows that Jesus is just a stonemason. 00:13:01.420 --> 00:13:03.240 Jesus is just a builder. 00:13:03.720 --> 00:13:07.940 Jesus knows nothing about fishing and is giving him terrible fishing advice. 00:13:09.779 --> 00:13:20.980 And he knows that Jesus is testing him in a way, asking him whether or not he's willing to go against his own instincts and his own experiences. 00:13:20.980 --> 00:13:30.519 But Peter also knows that he's been relying on himself and relying on all the things that he knows. 00:13:31.300 --> 00:13:33.560 And yet the result is he's caught what? 00:13:34.519 --> 00:13:35.600 He's caught nothing. 00:13:37.080 --> 00:13:43.519 And, you know, the turning point in that story in Luke 5 is that when Peter trusts Jesus, he says to Jesus, 00:13:43.519 --> 00:13:52.240 Jesus, because you say so, he says, Jesus, at your word, I'm going to let down the nets. 00:13:53.399 --> 00:13:58.079 And the result is that they get this enormous, miraculous catch of fish. 00:13:58.159 --> 00:14:01.480 And Peter, in that moment, he's astonished and he falls at Jesus' feet. 00:14:01.539 --> 00:14:03.860 He says, go away from me, Lord, for I'm a sinful man. 00:14:03.860 --> 00:14:11.460 And Jesus says to Peter, don't be afraid, Peter, because from now on you're going to fish for people. 00:14:11.580 --> 00:14:13.120 You're going to be catching people. 00:14:14.879 --> 00:14:21.700 So you see in John 21, when the resurrected and living Lord Jesus comes to Peter and comes to universe was created through Jesus, ex nihilo. 00:15:09.139 --> 00:15:11.659 And God has raised Jesus up from the dead. 00:15:13.000 --> 00:15:15.440 And so fish aren't hard for Jesus. 00:15:17.000 --> 00:15:19.840 If Jesus says the fish are going to be out in the deep water, 00:15:19.960 --> 00:15:23.500 if Jesus says the fish are going to be on that side of the boat and not on this side of the boat, 00:15:23.500 --> 00:15:25.259 well, that's where the fish are going to be. 00:15:26.480 --> 00:15:28.620 Because that's how powerful Jesus is. 00:15:29.600 --> 00:15:32.080 And that's how it will accomplish what I desire and achieve the purpose for which I sent my word. 00:15:42.960 --> 00:15:49.800 And you see, when Jesus' disciple community lives in obedience to his powerful word, 00:15:49.879 --> 00:15:53.040 when it trusts his trustworthy commands, 00:15:53.840 --> 00:15:58.000 when it carries out its mission under the authority of Jesus 00:15:58.000 --> 00:16:00.240 and in line with the direction of Jesus, 00:16:01.280 --> 00:16:02.780 well, we're not just going to catch many fish. 00:16:02.840 --> 00:16:04.620 We're going to catch many, many people. 00:16:04.620 --> 00:16:13.740 Friends, the question that this text asks us to examine ourselves with is, 00:16:13.899 --> 00:16:18.560 in what ways are we trying to bear fruit by ourselves? 00:16:19.560 --> 00:16:22.820 In what ways are we trying to catch people apart from him? 00:16:23.960 --> 00:16:27.620 How are we operating in our own energy, 00:16:28.480 --> 00:16:29.759 our own knowledge, 00:16:29.879 --> 00:16:31.200 our own resources, 00:16:31.860 --> 00:16:32.860 our own strength? 00:16:32.860 --> 00:16:35.180 But in the end, 00:16:35.259 --> 00:16:37.700 coming up feeling empty and exhausted, 00:16:39.399 --> 00:16:43.200 really bearing very little fruit worth having, 00:16:44.360 --> 00:16:46.440 not really catching many people, 00:16:47.419 --> 00:16:49.940 not really getting anywhere. 00:16:51.980 --> 00:16:52.840 See, verse 6 says, 00:16:52.940 --> 00:16:54.600 Throw your net on the right side of the boat, 00:16:54.680 --> 00:16:55.620 and you will find some.
