chronologically is getting to the Psalms. 00:02:12.580 --> 00:02:15.280 You know, at the beginning, you're skipping back and forth. 00:02:15.379 --> 00:02:19.819 You're turning pages, going back and forth, trying to follow along chronologically. 00:02:19.819 --> 00:02:24.139 But then it's all worth it when you get to the Psalms. 00:02:24.219 --> 00:02:32.060 Because in the Psalms, many times what you get to do is you read the story that's the inspiration behind the Psalm. 00:02:32.699 --> 00:02:37.919 And Psalms are songs that were meant to be sung for this corporate worship. 00:02:38.120 --> 00:02:43.259 And many times it's those Psalms that remind us of who God is. 00:02:43.400 --> 00:02:47.500 And when we understand the story behind it, it just takes on new meaning. 00:02:47.500 --> 00:02:53.159 For most of us, we can understand when we listen to both secular and non-secular music, 00:02:53.580 --> 00:03:00.120 if there's a story that goes behind a song, all of a sudden, it takes on new power. 00:03:00.259 --> 00:03:01.300 It takes on new meaning. 00:03:01.479 --> 00:03:07.740 It takes on new life for us because we understand the circumstances in which it was written. 00:03:08.240 --> 00:03:14.500 Now, this Psalm today, Psalm chapter 3, it gives us a clue as to what those circumstances were. 00:03:14.500 --> 00:03:20.639 In fact, if you look right above Psalm chapter 3, verse 1, you'll see a superscription up in the top, 00:03:20.939 --> 00:03:25.539 a little heading that reminds you of when this Psalm was written. 00:03:25.639 --> 00:03:30.759 So if you look at the Scripture, it'll tell you right above Psalm chapter 1, it says, 00:03:30.939 --> 00:03:32.319 A Psalm of David. 00:03:32.439 --> 00:03:37.280 So immediately we realize that this is a Psalm that David wrote. 00:03:37.280 --> 00:03:43.659 And it also was written, it says, when he fled from Absalom, his son. 00:03:44.180 --> 00:03:50.639 And so this immediately reminds us and puts us into the story of when this took place. 00:03:51.420 --> 00:03:55.219 And so as we look at this, we are reminded of this. 00:03:55.280 --> 00:04:01.920 To get the full context, I would encourage you to 00:04:43.900 --> 00:04:51.120 From the sole of his foot to the crown of his head, there was no blemish in him. 00:04:51.840 --> 00:04:54.939 That sounds a lot like the Father's Day card Catherine gave me this morning. 00:04:54.939 --> 00:05:05.860 But here what we see is someone who walks into a room and may overthrow his father David. 00:05:06.399 --> 00:05:09.620 And his plan involves staying right outside the gates in Jerusalem. 00:05:09.899 --> 00:05:13.800 And every time that somebody would come into Jerusalem to settle a dispute, 00:05:14.180 --> 00:05:19.339 let's say that one of the tribes had a dispute and they needed to bring this issue before somebody 00:05:19.339 --> 00:05:23.339 to figure out and put to rest this dispute. 00:05:23.719 --> 00:05:26.259 They would come in and Absalom would say, 00:05:26.399 --> 00:05:27.099 Come over here. 00:05:27.179 --> 00:05:28.719 Let me hear what's going on. 00:05:29.259 --> 00:05:31.439 Tell me about what is taking place. sandals on. 00:06:23.220 --> 00:06:29.879 And so in David's desperation, in this moment where his world is collapsing in on him, 00:06:29.879 --> 00:06:35.300 in this moment is when he writes the taking place in David's life. 00:07:54.959 --> 00:07:58.019 Several things that are evident in his life, 00:07:58.120 --> 00:08:01.599 But I think are often times can be evident in our lives as well. 00:08:01.979 --> 00:08:02.859 To begin with, 00:08:02.919 --> 00:08:04.819 We're going to look at this first stanza 00:08:04.819 --> 00:08:08.099 And see what David saw and heard. 00:08:08.100 --> 00:08:09.400 And so as we look at this, 00:08:09.439 --> 00:08:13.120 I want us to consider what David saw and heard. 00:08:13.840 --> 00:08:14.340 It says, 00:08:14.480 --> 00:08:16.400 O Lord, how introduced to a really nasty character 00:10:48.820 --> 00:10:49.720 Named Shimei. 00:10:50.100 --> 00:10:52.120 Now Shimei was of the house of Saul 00:10:52.120 --> 00:10:54.200 And he hated David. 00:10:54.740 --> 00:10:57.519 And really anyone that was associated with David, 00:10:57.860 --> 00:10:59.060 He hated them. 00:10:59.620 --> 00:11:02.019 So while David is fleeing from Absalom, 00:11:02.159 --> 00:11:03.919 Shimei sees what is going, 00:11:04.340 --> 00:11:05.580 What is taking place 00:11:05.580 --> 00:11:07.299 And begins to harass David 00:11:07.299 --> 00:11:09.639 By yelling all of these curses at him, 00:11:09.700 --> 00:11:11.159 By throwing things at him. 00:11:11.460 --> 00:11:13.039 You see, he was of the house of Saul 00:11:13.039 --> 00:11:15.620 And so he was upset that David was now king 00:11:15.620 --> 00:11:17.879 Because that means Saul is no longer 00:11:17.879 --> 00:11:20.480 And Saul's house is no longer in the monarchy. 00:11:20.599 -->
