as I was reading these verses this past week 00:01:36.900 --> 00:01:38.240 is the repetition of Luke. 00:01:39.359 --> 00:01:46.460 Three times he says that Mary and Joseph acted in accordance with the law of the Lord 00:01:46.460 --> 00:01:47.879 or the law of Moses. 00:01:48.859 --> 00:01:51.359 And I think one of the reasons he says this so many times 00:01:51.359 --> 00:01:57.500 is that it really does explain the reason for why Mary and Joseph went and did all this. 00:01:57.500 --> 00:02:02.140 They made a trip from Bethlehem into Jerusalem with their little baby. 00:02:02.980 --> 00:02:04.879 Mary went through purification rites. 00:02:05.060 --> 00:02:09.740 They presented Jesus before the Lord and they offered a sacrifice at the temple. 00:02:10.479 --> 00:02:10.759 Why? 00:02:11.560 --> 00:02:14.719 In all of these cases, the reason is singular. 00:02:15.000 --> 00:02:15.479 It's simple. 00:02:16.000 --> 00:02:21.699 This is what the Lord God had commanded all of his people to do through Moses long ago. 00:02:21.699 --> 00:02:26.979 And Mary and Joseph, desiring to be obedient to God and to honor him, 00:02:28.060 --> 00:02:29.199 did all that he asked. 00:02:30.560 --> 00:02:35.780 We won't get into all the details of the purification rites for mothers who have given birth, 00:02:36.159 --> 00:02:40.219 but you can find those in the Old Testament book of Leviticus, chapter 12. 00:02:41.099 --> 00:02:43.000 And if we go back and read there, 00:02:43.120 --> 00:02:47.399 those details let us know that Mary and Joseph would have made this trip to Jerusalem 00:02:47.400 --> 00:02:50.620 40 days after the birth of Jesus. 00:02:52.800 --> 00:02:56.180 And Jesus, being the firstborn son of Mary, 00:02:57.020 --> 00:03:01.599 he is to be dedicated or consecrated to the Lord. 00:03:02.020 --> 00:03:04.840 And this pointed back to the Exodus, 00:03:05.099 --> 00:03:09.080 where God claimed the firstborn son of every family as his, 00:03:09.480 --> 00:03:13.540 since he had spared the firstborn son of every Israelite family 00:03:13.539 --> 00:03:17.439 who followed his instructions the night of the Passover. 00:03:18.939 --> 00:03:23.500 And so Mary offers a sacrifice to the Lord at the temple. 00:03:24.879 --> 00:03:28.219 The standard sacrifice to be offered when a child was born 00:03:28.219 --> 00:03:33.439 was a year-old lamb and a young pigeon or dove. 00:03:34.439 --> 00:03:39.739 But notice that Luke directly quotes here what Mary offered from the Old Testament. 00:03:39.740 --> 00:03:40.260 He says, 00:03:40.340 --> 00:03:43.460 A pair of doves or two young pigeons. 00:03:45.000 --> 00:03:46.040 Not a lamb. 00:03:48.159 --> 00:03:50.980 Because of Leviticus 12, verse 8, it says, 00:03:51.120 --> 00:03:52.460 If she cannot afford a lamb, 00:03:53.080 --> 00:03:56.660 she is to bring two doves or two young pigeons. 00:03:58.140 --> 00:04:02.280 So it's a very clear indication that Mary and Joseph were poor. 00:04:48.199 Moved by the Spirit, he went into the temple courts. 00:04:49.799 --> 00:04:56.099 When the parents brought in the child Jesus to do for him what the custom of the law required, Mary and Joseph that day. 00:05:30.259 --> 00:05:31.660 They're brand new parents. 00:05:32.460 --> 00:05:37.500 They've just made their first trip out of town into the big city of Jerusalem. priest, Zachariah, and his wife Elizabeth, who we heard about, 00:06:00.379 --> 00:06:03.039 they knew something, of course, but they lived in the hill country. 00:06:04.740 --> 00:06:07.379 The birth announcement for Jesus was spectacular, 00:06:07.920 --> 00:06:11.819 but it came in the middle of the night to shepherds near Bethlehem 00:06:11.819 --> 00:06:14.920 who were probably still out there his own words. 00:07:35.759 --> 00:07:38.300 Death is not too far down the road for him. 00:07:39.199 --> 00:07:41.300 And he's a righteous and devout man. 00:07:42.680 --> 00:07:46.500 So on the whole, he's a man who's been living by faith and obedience to God. 00:07:46.680 --> 00:07:50.259 A man who fears God, who's seeking to honor God with his life. 00:07:50.259 --> 00:07:53.779 And he's a man who has been waiting, says Luke. 00:07:55.500 --> 00:08:00.779 Waiting, looking forward to the consolation of Israel. 00:08:01.740 --> 00:08:06.240 That word consolation has to do with comforting
