God's timing is perfect. Ecclesiastes chapter 9, we're going to 00:00:34.000 --> 00:00:43.039 read the first 12 verses together. So, let's hear God's Word. So, I reflected on all this and concluded 00:00:43.039 --> 00:00:50.039 that the righteous and the wise and what they do are in God's hands, but no one knows whether love 00:00:50.039 --> 00:00:57.000 or hate awaits them. All share a common destiny, the righteous and the wicked, the good and the bad, 00:00:57.500 --> 00:01:04.219 the clean and the unclean, those who offer sacrifices and those who do not. As it is with the good, 00:01:04.359 --> 00:01:10.439 so with the sinful. As it is with those who take oaths, so with those who are afraid to take them. 00:01:11.159 --> 00:01:17.879 This is the evil in everything that happens under the sun. The same destiny overtakes all. The hearts 00:01:17.879 --> 00:01:22.840 of people, moreover, are full of evil, and there is madness in their hearts while they live, and 00:01:22.840 --> 00:01:30.960 afterwards they join the dead. Anyone who is among the living has hope. Even a live dog is better off 00:01:30.960 --> 00:01:36.980 than a dead lion. For the living know that they will die, but the dead know nothing. Never again will they ever part in anything that happens under the sun. Enjoy life in this unpredictable world. 00:03:12.280 --> 00:03:23.359 The 21st of October, 2015, was a big day, and I wonder if anybody knows why. You'd have to be a real 00:03:23.359 --> 00:03:29.479 film buff to know why. It was the future day, from Back to the Future 2. And so people got really 00:03:29.479 --> 00:03:36.579 excited back in 2015 trying to see, well, what predictions from 1989 actually came to pass. 00:03:37.099 --> 00:03:41.799 Some were spot on. If you watch the movie, you'll see people making video calls. And there were 00:03:41.799 --> 00:03:49.979 smart watches. And Nike even made self-tying shoes for one year only. But of course, some were wildly 00:03:49.979 --> 00:03:57.979 wrong. There are still no hoverboards. There are still no flying cars. And we don't have super accurate, 00:03:57.979 --> 00:04:06.219 up to the second weather reports that guarantee anything. People like making predictions. 00:04:07.419 --> 00:04:15.319 And as people make predictions, often we tie it with the idea of control. We can very easily imagine 00:04:15.319 --> 00:04:22.939 our lives operate like a closed system. If I do X, then Y will certainly happen, as if it's as 00:04:22.939 --> 00:04:28.660 straightforward as if I flick the switch, the lights come on. So we watch a weather report, 00:04:28.740 --> 00:04:34.779 and we plan for a lovely day in the sunshine. And how many of us have taken a soaking as a result? 00:04:35.740 --> 00:04:41.519 Far more significantly, perhaps, we can think about Neville Chamberlain, British Prime Minister in the 00:04:41.519 --> 00:04:49.319 1930s, announcing after meeting with Hitler, peace in our time. Little did he realize he could not 00:04:49.319 --> 00:04:57.439 control or predict Hitler's evil actions. Or maybe personally, we have found ourselves making five-year 00:04:57.439 --> 00:05:04.360 plans, ten-year plans, retirement plans, only they've been impacted by redundancy or ill health 00:05:04.360 --> 00:05:12.279 or failures and disappointments. And so Ecclesiastes 9 is going to explore this problem for us, 00:05:12.279 --> 00:05:19.119 and it's also going to present a solution to us. So our preacher has been looking at this head on, 00:05:19.199 --> 00:05:28.799 and he continues to engage with the idea that life is unpredictable, that there are so many outcomes 00:05:28.799 --> 00:05:37.319 that are not clear to us. As Burns and Steinbeck appreciated, the best laid plans of mice and men 00:05:37.319 --> 00:05:47.740 often go awry. And as we reflect on that, and as we experience that, often it stirs up emotions for us. 00:05:48.120 --> 00:05:54.240 Perhaps it causes us to ask questions. We have frustration or sadness or despair. 00:05:55.459 --> 00:06:01.159 We can ask ourselves, what's the point? How do I please God in the chaos that is my life or this world? 00:06:01.160 --> 00:06:11.439 And our preacher is going to say to us this evening, very honestly, yes, life is predictably unpredictable. 00:06:13.380 --> 00:06:19.180 So what we should do is trust in God, the only one who knows and controls. 00:06:20.600 --> 00:06:26.980 And for us living when we do, we should trust the God who sent His Son to guarantee an eternal future. 00:06:26.980 --> 00:06:35.680 Our preacher is going to say to us, yes, you may very well feel surrounded by fear and uncertainty, 00:06:36.360 --> 00:06:43.680 but still each day fight for joy and enjoy life's good things when they come to you. 00:06:44.960 --> 00:06:48.960 So let's think about this first big idea that we see at the beginning and the end, 00:06:49.040 --> 00:06:55.379 that life is predictably unpredictable. So if you look at chapter 9, verses 1 to 6, 00:06:55.379 --> 00:07:00.120 the preacher begins, here are some things that you can count on in life, 00:07:01.120 --> 00:07:04.779 though these are not things that we would instinctively choose for ourselves. 00:07:05.980 --> 00:07:13.560 In verse 1, he says to us that everyone is going to have a mixed experience of life. 00:07:13.680 --> 00:07:16.920 Life is going to come with ups and downs. 00:07:16.920 --> 00:07:22.520 The righteous and the wise and what they do are in God's hands, 00:07:23.240 --> 00:07:26.980 but no one knows where their love or hate awaits them. 00:07:28.000 --> 00:07:34.160 The righteous and the wise have learned to trust God and to know that their times are in God's hands, 00:07:34.240 --> 00:07:39.400 they're living God's way, but their future could be love or hate. 00:07:39.600 --> 00:07:41.620 In other words, it could be positive or negative. 00:07:41.800 --> 00:07:44.460 There is no fixed rule. bean packets that you get where you never know what flavor you're going to get? 00:08:18.120 --> 00:08:20.519 They could be really good ones, they could be awful ones, those Harry Potter ones. 00:08:21.139 --> 00:08:23.300 Life is a bit more like that, according to our preacher. 00:08:24.159 --> 00:08:27.919 You never know what any day is going to bring. 00:08:28.219 --> 00:08:30.539 It could be good, it could be bad. 00:08:30.540 --> 00:08:32.240 Only God knows. 00:08:32.340 --> 00:08:35.000 So we can count on knowing ups and downs in life. 00:08:35.320 --> 00:08:37.240 Something into all kinds of sin and addiction and troubles, 00:08:57.539 --> 00:09:02.539 or whether we've lived an upright life, all will die. 00:09:02.620 --> 00:09:05.500 There's that series of contrasts. 00:09:05.899 --> 00:09:08.199 The good and the bad, the clean and the unclean. 00:09:08.459 --> 00:09:11.639 Whether we make oaths or whether we feel in our conscience we can never make an oath, they have choose the way of madness and folly. 00:09:38.679 --> 00:09:41.200 Biblically, living without God. 00:09:42.320 --> 00:09:47.440 But at the end of the day, we will all face death. recognize with our preacher, verses 4 to 6, 00:10:01.019 --> 00:10:07.179 everyone knows and chooses to believe that life is better than death. 00:10:09.759 --> 00:10:11.460 Verse 4 says, 00:10:11.840 --> 00:10:14.059 anyone who is among the living has hope. 00:10:14.639 --> 00:10:16.399 Sounds a lot like our popular phrase, 00:10:16.500 --> 00:10:17.879 where there is life, there is hope. 00:10:19.019 --> 00:10:21.980 Doctors will tell us that hope is important for recovery. 00:10:21.980 --> 00:10:23.980 And then there's that proverb. 00:10:23.980 --> 00:10:28.039 Even a live dog is better off than a dead lion. 00:10:28.159 --> 00:10:31.480 Better a living street dog than a dead king of beasts. 00:10:31.620 --> 00:10:34.259 Life is better than death. 00:10:35.639 --> 00:10:40.139 There's a set of comparisons there in verses 5 and 6. 00:10:40.139 --> 00:10:45.179 The living have knowledge, but the dead know nothing. 00:10:45.980 --> 00:10:50.000 While we're alive, we can gain rewards, but not when we're dead. 00:10:50.199 --> 00:10:53.860 The living experience intense emotions. 00:10:55.740 --> 00:10:59.199 Even if it's love and hate and jealousy, for the dead, those have heard from one of his letters. 00:15:39.139 --> 00:15:43.279 Paul, as he served Christ faithfully, suffered for Christ hugely. 00:15:43.980 --> 00:15:46.360 Think about the Lord Jesus Himself. 00:15:47.620 --> 00:15:49.240 Had no place to call home. 00:15:49.919 --> 00:15:51.659 Was betrayed by His friends. 00:15:52.079 --> 00:15:54.220 Rejected by those He came to save. 00:15:54.459 --> 00:15:55.659 And ultimately was killed. 00:15:55.779 --> 00:15:58.459 But Jesus was the man of faith. 00:15:58.959 --> 00:16:01.839 There is no straight line connection between living by faith 00:16:01.840 --> 00:16:02.660 and the good life. 00:16:04.180 --> 00:16:06.660 It's also a reminder that there is no guarantee 00:16:06.660 --> 00:16:10.080 that our plans, even our godly plans and chapter 9, 00:19:16.440 --> 00:19:18.160 maybe we felt the temptation, 00:19:18.779 --> 00:19:19.859 maybe after grief, 00:19:21.279 --> 00:19:23.980 that one way to avoid heartbreak 00:19:23.980 -->
