The slave-master dynamic. 00:02:28.479 --> 00:02:33.739 He's talking about work and he's talking about employment and being an employer and an employee. 00:02:35.280 --> 00:02:38.419 And we'll come to address this issue of slavery in just a second. 00:02:38.979 --> 00:02:42.979 But work is what we spend most of our time on in our waking hours. 00:02:42.979 --> 00:02:50.620 So the average human being, the average person in this room will spend 90,000 hours in employed work over the course of their lifetime. 00:02:51.159 --> 00:02:56.839 That's the statistical average and if you're a high worker, an over worker, it's far more, right? 00:02:56.959 --> 00:03:03.780 And so, boy, you got to believe that Christianity has something to say about work. 00:03:04.579 --> 00:03:07.539 That which we spend most of our awake time doing. 00:03:07.799 --> 00:03:08.419 And it does. 00:03:08.879 --> 00:03:10.139 Christianity is so practical. 00:03:10.599 --> 00:03:11.579 So let's think about that. 00:03:11.580 --> 00:03:17.340 First, let's understand Paul in context and deal with this issue of slavery. 00:03:18.300 --> 00:03:19.620 And then second, we can't ignore that. 00:03:19.720 --> 00:03:27.800 And then secondly, I just want to give you the one big principle that Paul gives us for how to think about faith and work in this passage. 00:03:28.260 --> 00:03:34.600 And of course, when I say one big principle, that means one big principle with lots of sub-principles underneath it, okay? 00:03:35.460 --> 00:03:36.480 All right, so here we go. 00:03:36.479 --> 00:03:41.979 First, what do we do about the context when we open the passage and read verse 1? 00:03:41.979 --> 00:03:45.019 Slaves, obey your earthly masters. 00:03:45.019 --> 00:03:50.659 The ESV U.S. actually says, bond servants, obey your masters. 00:03:50.659 --> 00:03:55.240 So there's two different versions of the ESV, one for Americans, one for British people. 00:03:55.919 --> 00:03:59.000 And in the American one, it says, bond servants, obey your masters. 00:03:59.079 --> 00:04:08.300 And the reason for that is because the translators are trying to soften the language to distinguish Greco-Roman Mediterranean slavery from African chattel slavery. 00:04:08.300 --> 00:04:12.380 And they want to soften the language to make a distinction there. 00:04:12.439 --> 00:04:14.260 And there are many distinctions to be made there. 00:04:15.120 --> 00:04:16.199 But the word is slaves. 00:04:16.639 --> 00:04:17.879 Slaves, obey your masters. 00:04:18.360 --> 00:04:21.460 Now, you may say, Paul says, slaves, obey your masters. 00:04:21.540 --> 00:04:23.980 And you think, where I work, I am a slave. 00:04:24.060 --> 00:04:25.860 So I don't need any contextualization here. 00:04:26.060 --> 00:04:27.560 This is right on. 00:04:27.560 --> 00:04:33.480 But here he's, of course, talking to first century people in the city of Ephesus. 00:04:34.519 --> 00:04:49.199 And after William Wilberforce, after the Civil War, after the Jim Crow South, in the area where I grew up, after apartheid, some of us and lots of people in our city would come to a passage like this. 00:04:49.199 --> 00:04:51.699 And they would struggle, struggle, struggle. 00:04:51.779 --> 00:04:52.420 And maybe you do. 00:04:52.420 --> 00:05:00.360 Because you say, Paul, where is the sentence that says, slaves, revolt against your masters and abolish slavery? 00:05:01.259 --> 00:05:02.280 Where is that sentence? 00:05:02.600 --> 00:05:05.500 All we read is, slaves, obey your earthly masters. 00:05:06.420 --> 00:05:08.140 And what do we do with something like that? 00:05:08.939 --> 00:05:15.800 And many, many, it's definitely true that many Christians in the past, at times, have come and used this passage to condone slavery. 00:05:15.800 --> 00:05:29.080 And if you go back and read some of the sermons in the 1850s, where I come from, you'll see that sometimes, and that happened in the UK and Britain as well, that they used this passage to condone slavery. 00:05:29.180 --> 00:05:30.580 And that is not what Paul is doing. 00:05:30.980 --> 00:05:31.639 Not at all. 00:05:31.759 --> 00:05:32.360 What is Paul doing? 00:05:33.000 --> 00:05:37.160 He is writing to a little bitty church in this city called Ephesus. 00:05:37.160 --> 00:05:42.640 And we realize it has to be the case that most of the people he's talking to are slaves. 00:05:43.280 --> 00:05:53.600 So the historians will tell us that the estimates are as high as the population, first century population of the Roman Empire, being up to 75 million people in the first century. 00:05:54.220 --> 00:05:57.700 And up to 60 million of them are slaves. 00:05:58.379 --> 00:06:00.420 60 out of 75 slaves. 00:06:00.420 --> 00:06:11.220 Slavery is so ingrained, so part of the normal fabric of the culture, that overwhelmingly, at least 80% of all the people in the Greco-Roman Empire are slaves. 00:06:11.680 --> 00:06:20.700 And that means that when Paul writes this, he's talking to a little bitty church in Ephesus of people who have come to faith, discovering the gospel for the very first time. 00:06:20.759 --> 00:06:25.580 And what they're trying to do is work out, what do I do with this thing called Christianity? 00:06:25.579 --> 00:06:38.779 And if, Paul, you're telling me that the gospel, Ephesians 1 to 3, frees me in Christ, the gospel says you are now free in Christ, what does that mean when I go to work on Monday as a slave who is not free? 00:06:39.620 --> 00:06:42.199 And that is Paul's biggest concern, right? 00:06:42.199 --> 00:06:49.360 And so, in Greco-Roman Mediterranean slavery, you had some really, really brutal forms. 00:06:50.539 --> 00:06:55.360 People, masters separating families, men from their wives and children sometimes. 00:06:56.019 --> 00:06:58.459 You had torture sometimes happening. 00:06:58.959 --> 00:07:08.039 But in many forms of Greco-Roman slavery, you also had a paid job where you were housed, fed, well-educated. 00:07:08.120 --> 00:07:09.319 It was not race-based. 00:07:09.319 --> 00:07:12.379 Most of the people who were slaves were conquered peoples. 00:07:13.040 --> 00:07:17.540 And lots of people would sell themselves into slavery because it was a really, really steady thing. 00:07:17.639 --> 00:07:19.360 You knew that you could be fed, clothed. 00:07:19.439 --> 00:07:26.120 So, for instance, some of the most well-educated people in the whole of the Roman Empire were slaves, like the doctors in Caesar's household. 00:07:26.500 --> 00:07:28.180 They would have been slaves in the Roman Empire. 00:07:28.519 --> 00:07:30.860 It was the normal pattern to be a slave. 00:07:31.439 --> 00:07:35.719 And there were some horrible forms and some not-so-horrible forms. 00:07:35.720 --> 00:07:40.420 And what Paul's doing is he's not completely dismissing the institution. 00:07:41.740 --> 00:07:46.080 The principles of the Bible will ultimately lead to the abolishment of slavery one day. 00:07:47.040 --> 00:07:47.160 Yeah? 00:07:47.420 --> 00:07:50.400 But what he's doing here is he's looking out and he's being a pastor. 00:07:50.740 --> 00:07:53.580 And he's talking to people who have just come to faith in Christ and saying, 00:07:53.579 --> 00:07:55.759 Now, what does Jesus mean for Monday? 00:07:56.919 --> 00:07:57.899 I'm a slave. 00:07:58.419 --> 00:08:03.680 And boy, if he would have told this little band of slaves in the middle of a metropolis like Ephesus, 00:08:04.019 --> 00:08:09.799 Go out Monday morning and be an activist, you know, and protest on the royal mile against slavery, 00:08:10.019 --> 00:08:11.740 they would have all been dead before lunch. 00:08:12.279 --> 00:08:12.539 Okay? 00:08:12.659 --> 00:08:13.939 And so it would have been very foolish. 00:08:14.099 --> 00:08:15.459 And instead, what is he doing? 00:08:15.539 --> 00:08:16.759 He's trying to pastor them. 00:08:17.879 --> 00:08:19.199 Think about 1 Corinthians 7. 00:08:19.199 --> 00:08:22.399 Paul's got this list in 1 Corinthians 7 where he's going through, 00:08:22.500 --> 00:08:24.819 What does it mean to be a Christian in your normal life? 00:08:25.199 --> 00:08:27.459 And one of the issues he addresses is, 00:08:27.920 --> 00:08:31.959 If you've become a Christian but you're married to a non-Christian, do you leave your spouse? 00:08:32.580 --> 00:08:33.480 And Paul says, No. 00:08:34.120 --> 00:08:34.960 Stay with them. 00:08:35.299 --> 00:08:35.980 Be for them. 00:08:36.419 --> 00:08:36.580 Right? 00:08:36.639 --> 00:08:38.080 Because they just don't know. 00:08:38.720 --> 00:08:39.740 They're trying to figure it out. 00:08:39.819 --> 00:08:42.240 They don't know the ethics of following Jesus. 00:08:42.720 --> 00:08:43.399 And that's what he's doing. 00:08:43.460 --> 00:08:44.179 He's pastoring them. 00:08:44.240 --> 00:08:44.919 He's pastoring us. 00:08:44.919 --> 00:08:49.679 And he's saying, What does Jesus have to do with your Monday, with your employment, with your work? 00:08:49.699 --> 00:08:50.899 He's getting right down to it. 00:08:51.439 --> 00:08:52.259 That's his big goal. 00:08:52.360 --> 00:08:55.379 Now, does Paul care about the abolition of slavery? 00:08:55.579 --> 00:08:56.459 Absolutely he does. 00:08:56.719 --> 00:09:00.079 Does Christianity matter for the social conditions of a city? 00:09:00.879 --> 00:09:01.799 Absolutely it does. 00:09:01.879 --> 00:09:08.579 But the principle in the Bible is not revolution but always reformation. 00:09:09.199 --> 00:09:12.339 The biblical idea is never revolution but always reformation. 00:09:12.340 --> 00:09:18.420 In other words, what he's telling us is something absolutely revolutionary that leads not to revolutions but reformations. 00:09:19.200 --> 00:09:25.460 And just like last week, if you were here, I mentioned that when Paul turns to men in the Greco-Roman Empire and says, 00:09:25.800 --> 00:09:30.480 Men, you husbands, you cherish your wives as if she is your own body. 00:09:31.480 --> 00:09:36.139 In a society where men would get married and then have any relationship they wanted on the side 00:09:36.139 --> 00:09:38.620 and could care less about their wife except for status, 00:09:38.620 --> 00:09:43.460 He says, You nourish and cherish her like it's your very body. 00:09:43.620 --> 00:09:48.940 Boy, that was an equality, a plane of equality in the Greco-Roman world that had never existed. 00:09:50.080 --> 00:09:52.539 And when he turns in this passage in verse 8 and 9 and he says, 00:09:52.539 --> 00:10:02.240 You cannot look at your slave and think, I'm greater than my slave. 00:10:02.659 --> 00:10:07.419 Instead, when you know that you're standing before the Lord, you're equal with them before God. 00:10:07.579 --> 00:10:09.919 That is a revolution that will lead to a reformation. 00:10:10.539 --> 00:10:15.000 And you can think about William Wilberforce here in this country in the 19th century. 00:10:15.000 --> 00:10:19.820 William Wilberforce, who really led the movement towards abolition of the slave trade here, 00:10:21.179 --> 00:10:24.659 he was an aristocrat of aristocrats. 00:10:25.460 --> 00:10:28.039 He was as ostentatious as it gets. 00:10:28.940 --> 00:10:31.220 So he was a character in a Jane Austen novel. 00:10:31.399 --> 00:10:34.440 A pretentious, snobby, very, very wealthy man. 00:10:34.779 --> 00:10:35.980 And he found Jesus. 00:10:36.240 --> 00:10:36.960 Jesus found him. 00:10:37.379 --> 00:10:38.220 He came to Christ. 00:10:38.340 --> 00:10:39.399 It changed his life. 00:10:39.659 --> 00:10:41.259 It reordered all of his relationships. 00:10:41.399 --> 00:10:41.919 And what did he do? 00:10:41.919 --> 00:10:49.879 He spent his entire life slowly trying to be leaven in a society that still had the slave trade 00:10:49.879 --> 00:10:53.939 by slowly, slowly, slowly drip-feeding parliament with biblical principles 00:10:53.939 --> 00:10:56.779 until parliament abolished the slave trade. 00:10:57.039 --> 00:11:00.579 The principle in the Bible is to care about social conditions, 00:11:00.759 --> 00:11:03.979 but not through the lens of revolution, through the lens of reformation. 00:11:04.719 --> 00:11:09.819 Drip-feeding the gospel principles over and over and over again until change starts to happen. 00:11:09.820 --> 00:11:15.180 And God calls us at all different levels to care about the social conditions we may have been dropped into. 00:11:15.660 --> 00:11:17.760 So some of us might become William Wilberforce. 00:11:17.860 --> 00:11:24.120 Others of us, most of us, will not in tiny little small ways in whatever community workplace that we've been put in. 00:11:24.320 --> 00:11:25.920 But the Bible calls us to care about that. 00:11:25.960 --> 00:11:27.460 But let me give you the biggest takeaway here. 00:11:27.460 --> 00:11:40.420 And the biggest takeaway to see is that Paul is saying to us the most important thing is to care in this fleeting life about what does Jesus have to do with me in my life today. 00:11:41.160 --> 00:11:45.240 So the social conditions may change, I hope so, for the better. 00:11:45.580 --> 00:11:46.879 But this life is fleeting. 00:11:46.879 --> 00:11:56.100 And Paul is saying the most important thing is to ask, in the first century, what does it mean for me to be a slave tomorrow at 8 a.m., 7 a.m. when I wake up? 00:11:56.240 --> 00:12:00.679 What does it mean for you as a Christian to be an employee or an employer tomorrow? 00:12:01.439 --> 00:12:01.820 Tomorrow. 00:12:02.220 --> 00:12:04.360 So the workplace may be really unhealthy. 00:12:05.519 --> 00:12:09.419 And what you've got to think about is slow drip-feeding permeation of change. 00:12:22.580 So a Christian is willing to suffer in bad conditions and pray that they get changed. 00:12:23.160 --> 00:12:26.840 But in the meantime, witness to the gospel the whole way, all along the teaching us here about work, about employees and employers and how to think about it? 00:12:43.160 --> 00:12:44.600 He's telling us one main thing. 00:12:44.600 --> 00:12:49.740 And that is, if you're a human being, you work. 00:12:50.240 --> 00:12:54.300 And if you work and you're a Christian, you work for the Lord. 00:12:55.879 --> 00:12:57.519 God is your ultimate boss. 00:12:58.519 --> the room, you work for the Lord, Paul says. 00:13:17.020 --> 00:13:22.420 And that means that you have to think about your workspace, your employees, the people who work under you, 00:13:22.580 -->
