You know, Jackie Smith was one of the greatest high school 00:00:16.859 --> 00:00:23.359 athletes to ever play football in the state of Louisiana. He was an All-American. He went 00:00:23.359 --> 00:00:29.980 on to college, was one of the best tight ends considered in college football. He even went 00:00:29.980 --> 00:00:36.980 on to play in the NFL, and he was considered a Hall of Fame, one of the best tight ends 00:00:36.980 --> 00:00:42.539 to ever play the game. But many of you who remember the name Jackie Smith today, those 00:00:42.539 --> 00:00:49.100 of you who are old enough to remember the 1970s, you'll probably remember Jackie Smith for one 00:00:49.100 --> 00:00:58.299 play in his entire career that he will always be remembered for. It was in the 1979 Super 00:00:58.299 --> 00:01:04.420 Bowl. The Dallas Cowboys were playing the Pittsburgh Steelers, and the Cowboys were trailing late 00:01:04.420 --> 00:01:11.739 in the third quarter, 21 to 14. But the Cowboys, with their Hall of Fame quarterback, Roger Stalbeck, 00:01:12.000 --> 00:01:19.060 were driving, and they were deep into Pittsburgh territory. And it was third down, and the play 00:01:19.060 --> 00:01:25.120 was called. The ball was hiked. Roger Stalbeck goes back for the pass. Jackie Smith runs into 00:01:25.120 --> 00:01:34.060 the end zone, begins to cross. No one is even close to him. No one is within 10 yards of him. 00:01:34.060 --> 00:01:39.060 And so Roger Stalbeck throws the ball right to him, and this is what happens. 00:01:39.060 --> 00:01:54.060 It's third down and three, Dallas at the Pittsburgh 10. Roger back to throw, has a man open in the end zone, caught, touchdown, dropped, dropped in the end zone, Jackie Smith all by himself. Oh, bless his heart, he's got to be the sickest man in America. 00:01:54.060 --> 00:02:15.060 The Hall of Fame quarterback, I mean tight end, that one of the greatest of all time, but he will always be remembered for that one play. He ran down into the end zone, crossed over, Roger Stalbeck hit him right in his hands. 00:02:15.060 --> 00:02:29.800 Whether it was the moment, whether it was the light, who knows, but this great tight end allowed the ball to hit him in the hands and bounce to the ground, and the Dallas Cowboys had to settle for a field goal. 00:02:30.379 --> 00:02:40.780 And then they lost the game by four points, and so many believe that that one play cost the Dallas Cowboys the Super Bowl. 00:02:40.780 --> 00:02:54.900 And it ended up Jackie Smith retired after that game, even though the Dallas Cowboys asked him to come back. He might have been five feet tall, rounder than me, butterball. 00:03:57.140 --> 00:03:59.819 I always remember he'd pull his pants up to about right here. 00:04:00.219 --> 00:04:03.300 But he was a ball of energy and fire. 00:04:03.480 --> 00:04:09.920 And he told me numerous times, I want to finish the race strong. 00:04:10.319 --> 00:04:17.060 I want to run the race and cross the finish line better than I ever did in my life. 00:04:17.060 --> 00:04:23.579 And this is a man in his early 80s that was still going on mission trips to places like Romania. 00:04:24.439 --> 00:04:32.060 He was still coming out for church visitation every Monday night, whether it was raining or dark or cold. 00:04:32.139 --> 00:04:35.699 It didn't matter. He and his wife would show up. 00:04:35.800 --> 00:04:39.160 Now, I have to put this into context. They were on fire for the Lord, passionate about making the name of Jesus known. 00:05:04.760 --> 00:05:09.520 And they wanted to serve faithfully until they crossed that finish line. 00:05:09.519 --> want us to take a look at a figure in Scripture that we all know very well. 00:05:49.579 --> 00:05:56.740 We know the highlights, the achievements, and the success of this figure. 00:05:57.040 --> 00:05:59.800 But do we know how he finished the race? 00:05:59.800 --> 00:06:09.980 Do we know what took place after the famous battle that Gideon defeated the Midianite army with 300 men? 00:06:10.259 --> 00:06:20.519 He was going up against 135,000 Midianite soldiers with 300 men, and God gave him the victory. 00:06:21.139 --> 00:06:22.400 We all know that story. 00:06:22.399 --> 00:06:30.939 But do we know what takes place next and how Gideon stumbled before the finish line? 00:06:31.000 --> 00:06:39.399 Let's look together at our Scripture in Judges 8, and we're going to be reading verses 22 through 27. 00:06:40.479 --> 00:06:42.739 The Israelites said to Gideon, 00:06:43.159 --> 00:06:50.319 Rule over us, you, your son, and your grandson, because you have saved us out of the hand of Midian. 00:06:50.319 --> 00:06:52.379 But Gideon told them, 00:06:52.860 --> 00:06:57.659 I will not rule over you, nor my son rule over you. 00:06:58.300 --> 00:07:00.319 The Lord will rule over you. 00:07:00.500 --> 00:07:01.120 And he said, 00:07:01.459 --> 00:07:06.879 I do have one request, that each of you give me an earring from your share of the plunder. 00:07:07.519 --> 00:07:11.219 You know, it was the custom of the Ishmaelites to wear gold earrings. 00:07:11.839 --> 00:07:12.620 And they answered, 00:07:13.120 --> 00:07:14.680 We'll be glad to give them. 00:07:15.039 --> 00:07:19.839 So they spread out a garment, and each man threw a ring from his plunder onto it. 00:07:19.839 --> 00:07:25.759 The weight of the gold rings he asked for came to 1,700 shekels, 00:07:25.759 --> 00:07:31.439 not counting the ornaments, the pendants, and the purple garments worn by the kings of Midian 00:07:31.439 --> 00:07:34.279 or the chains that were on their camels' necks. 00:07:34.959 --> 00:07:40.779 Gideon made the gold into an ephod, which he placed in Ophrah, his town. 00:07:40.779 --> 00:07:45.859 All Israel prostituted themselves by worshiping it there, 00:07:46.199 --> 00:07:51.159 and it became a snare to Gideon and to his family. 00:07:51.259 --> 00:07:52.319 Let's go to the Lord in prayer. 00:07:54.199 --> 00:07:56.019 Father, we come to you this morning, 00:07:56.659 --> 00:07:59.059 and we thank you, Lord, for the Word of God. 00:07:59.559 --> 00:08:02.699 We thank you that we can come to it, 00:08:02.699 --> 00:08:04.519 and we can learn life lessons, 00:08:04.860 --> 00:08:08.420 and we can grow in our relationship with you, 00:08:08.479 --> 00:08:09.539 and we can trust it, 00:08:09.979 --> 00:08:12.680 knowing that it is inspired by the Holy Spirit. 00:08:13.139 --> 00:08:16.000 And we ask, Lord, today that you just speak to each one of us, 00:08:16.599 --> 00:08:18.659 draw us closer to you and nearer to you, victory, 00:08:36.039 --> 00:08:43.059 where he went out and he defeated a Midianite army of 135,000 soldiers, 00:08:43.319 --> 00:08:47.579 and God had narrowed his army down to only 300 men. 00:08:47.740 --> 00:08:51.379 And the Israelites came to him and said, 00:08:51.659 --> 00:08:55.120 because you have delivered us out of the hand of Midian, 00:08:55.319 --> 00:08:57.879 we want you to become our king. 00:08:57.879 --> 00:09:02.639 You know, they wanted to be like all the other nations around them. 00:09:02.679 --> 00:09:03.980 Now, this was a big moment. 00:09:04.720 --> 00:09:05.820 This was a big moment. 00:09:05.939 --> 00:09:06.139 Why? 00:09:06.539 --> 00:09:08.139 Because up to this point, 00:09:09.379 --> 00:09:11.179 Israel had never had a king. 00:09:12.039 --> 00:09:14.740 Israel had been set aside by the hand of God 00:09:14.740 --> 00:09:17.740 to be ruled by God and God alone, 00:09:17.820 --> 00:09:19.059 and they'd never had a king. 00:09:19.159 --> 00:09:23.220 But they're asking Gideon to become their king. 00:09:23.779 --> 00:09:26.080 You know, we all like to be bragged on, don't we? 00:09:26.080 --> 00:09:32.820 We all like to feel important or feel special or even to be in a position of power. 00:09:33.480 --> 00:09:37.460 And so, this must have, if not for just a second, 00:09:37.960 --> 00:09:40.200 been a real temptation for Gideon, 00:09:40.460 --> 00:09:42.420 for him to accept the offer, 00:09:43.100 --> 00:09:45.759 you know, to believe that he is the one that helped them 00:09:45.759 --> 00:09:49.879 be delivered from Midian and become their king. 00:09:49.879 --> 00:09:56.820 But overall, Gideon shows some very good wisdom here in denying their quest. 00:09:56.899 --> 00:09:58.019 Look at verse 23. 00:09:59.559 --> 00:10:00.559 But Gideon told them, 00:10:00.720 --> 00:10:04.059 I will not rule over you, nor my son rule over you. 00:10:04.340 --> 00:10:06.879 The Lord will rule over you. 00:10:06.980 --> 00:10:12.259 Gideon understood that Israel was God's chosen people, 00:10:12.399 --> 00:10:15.580 and they had been set aside to be ruled by God, 00:10:15.620 --> 00:10:17.179 and they were to never have a king. 00:10:17.179 --> 00:10:21.679 Now, we know later on in history that they do adopt a king, 00:10:21.919 --> 00:10:24.099 but it becomes the downfall of them. 00:10:24.479 --> 00:10:26.219 But Gideon, at this moment in time, 00:10:26.399 --> 00:10:31.599 realizes that God was certainly to be the one to rule over them, 00:10:31.699 --> 00:10:38.879 and so he refuses their request certainly to become king. 00:10:38.879 --> 00:10:41.980 Now, this is also a big moment here, 00:10:42.320 --> 00:10:46.980 because Gideon had led Israel to defeat an army 00:10:46.980 --> 00:10:54.139 that was 450 times larger than themselves. 00:10:54.720 --> 00:10:56.659 Now, I want to put this in context today, 00:10:56.740 --> 00:11:00.960 because if it were in modern day weaponry, 00:11:01.500 --> 00:11:02.740 we might could think, 00:11:02.740 --> 00:11:06.840 yeah, 300 men with jet fighters flying over, 00:11:06.960 --> 00:11:10.580 dropping bombs, machine guns, tanks, 00:11:11.039 --> 00:11:14.580 all the modern day nuclear weaponry and stuff, 00:11:14.919 --> 00:11:19.460 300 men might defeat an army of 135,000. 00:11:19.740 --> 00:11:23.200 But that's not the context in which they were setting, was it? 00:11:23.720 --> 00:11:25.220 What were they fighting with? 00:11:25.220 --> 00:11:30.500 Swords, maybe spears. 00:11:31.420 --> 00:11:34.139 I don't know if they had bow and arrows at that point in time. 00:11:34.460 --> 00:11:36.019 But let's think about this. 00:11:36.060 --> 00:11:38.279 Who's the biggest and strongest man --> 00:11:50.620 And he's got a spear. 00:11:50.620 --> 00:11:55.320 Now, surround him with 450 men, 00:11:55.440 --> 00:11:57.399 also with spears and swords. 00:11:58.379 --> 00:12:00.200 What are his odds of winning? 00:12:00.899 --> 00:12:03.080 I'll even give him a gun. 00:12:04.679 --> 00:12:08.580 But he's still going up against 450 men. 00:12:09.039 --> 00:12:10.879 What are his odds of known. 00:12:31.060 --> 00:12:34.440 All the things they've seen God do throughout their history, 00:12:34.580 --> 00:12:37.200 all the battles He had already won for them, 00:12:38.419 --> 00:12:39.379 they should have known. 00:12:39.620 --> 00:12:41.440 But look who's getting the glory. 00:12:41.440 --> 00:12:46.700 You know, they told Gideon they wanted him to rule over them 00:12:46.700 --> 00:12:51.240 because he had won the battle. 00:12:51.620 --> 00:12:55.300 And there's not one spoken word here in Scripture 00:12:55.300 --> 00:12:58.500 that is in recognition of God. 00:12:59.180 --> 00:13:04.560 Not one word here in recognition that God is who won that battle. 00:13:04.559 --> 00:13:06.519 Now we can look back and remember, 00:13:06.919 --> 00:13:08.279 go back to the story of Gideon. 00:13:08.359 --> 00:13:11.719 When he first raised his army, he raised an army of 32,000. 00:13:11.939 --> 00:13:13.819 And God said, your army's too big. 00:13:14.579 --> 00:13:15.379 Narrow it down. 00:13:15.759 --> 00:13:17.819 So 22,000 soldiers left. 00:13:17.899 --> 00:13:19.099 He had an army of 10,000. 00:13:19.179 --> 00:13:20.339 He said, it's still too big. 00:13:20.899 --> 00:13:21.739 Narrow it down. 00:13:22.019 --> 00:13:23.159 Now we know why. 00:13:23.159 --> 00:13:26.899 Now we know why God told them, 00:13:27.240 --> 00:13:28.879 or told Gideon that his army was too big. 00:13:28.939 --> 00:13:33.919 Because if he had gone into battle with an army of 32,000 men 00:13:33.919 --> 00:13:37.019 and defeated an army of 135,000, 00:13:37.279 --> 00:13:40.459 somehow maybe they thought, well, we pulled it off. 00:13:41.339 --> 00:13:43.079 Maybe we're better than we thought we were. 00:13:44.519 --> 00:13:47.279 But when you go into a battle of 300 men, 00:13:47.360 --> 00:13:50.059 that again the odds are 450 to 1, 00:13:50.059 --> 00:13:57.500 there's no explanation except God won that battle. 00:13:57.959 --> 00:14:01.359 But they were given Gideon the glory and the praise. 00:14:01.899 --> 00:14:04.319 Now Gideon refused to be their king, 00:14:04.439 --> 00:14:06.299 but he does make one request. 00:14:07.379 --> 00:14:10.859 He makes a request that they take a gold earring, 00:14:11.000 --> 00:14:15.459 which the Midianite soldiers had the tradition of wearing gold earrings, 00:14:15.459 --> 00:14:19.839 and he asked for one gold earring from each of the soldiers. 00:14:20.059 --> 00:14:21.159 And they were glad. 00:14:21.259 --> 00:14:25.579 They probably were thankful that he didn't require even more than that. 00:14:25.659 --> 00:14:27.479 They just asked for one gold earring. 00:14:27.579 --> 00:14:28.819 And so they laid out a garment, 00:14:29.239 --> 00:14:34.239 and the soldiers began to throw their one gold earring into that. 00:14:34.319 --> 00:14:42.239 And it came out to be 43 pounds of gold that Gideon had. 00:14:42.240 --> 00:14:47.919 And I don't see anything in Scripture or anything that I've read 00:14:47.919 --> 00:14:51.580 that tells me that Gideon's request was wrong 00:14:51.580 --> 00:14:55.399 and that he was doing anything out of the will of God 00:14:55.399 --> 00:14:57.120 by requesting their earrings. 00:14:57.200 --> 00:15:00.299 There are times in Scriptures, people like Abraham, 00:15:01.240 --> 00:15:03.860 that they were told, don't take a single thing. 00:15:03.860 --> 00:15:10.320 And they were told and instructed by God not to touch the plunder. 00:15:10.460 --> 00:15:14.700 But I don't see that in the story with Gideon at all. 00:15:14.720 --> 00:16:32.559 O Lord God of Israel, your servant has heard definitely 00:16:32.559 --> 00:16:37.419 that Saul plans to come to Kaliah and destroy the town on account of me. 00:16:37.799 -->
