How many of you 00:00:17.800 --> 00:00:22.859 have heard the life of Joseph taught in Sunday school or maybe preached in a service before? 00:00:23.100 --> 00:00:28.620 You're familiar with it? Yeah, many of you. That is one of my favorite Bible stories. Kind of 00:00:28.620 --> 00:00:33.579 growing up, it was always what I said was my favorite Bible story from the Old Testament. 00:00:34.079 --> 00:00:38.939 It's also my middle name, so maybe that had something to do with it. But I love Joseph. 00:00:39.120 --> 00:00:44.359 It was always my favorite. And so I've never actually preached a sermon series on Joseph 00:00:44.359 --> 00:00:52.079 before. This was a first for me. And diving into it, I quickly realized this is an epic saga in the 00:00:52.079 --> 00:00:58.299 Old Testament, and there is so much there. And condensing it into a five-sermon series is going 00:00:58.299 --> 00:01:06.140 to be very challenging. So here we go. All right. Number one, Joseph, part one. Here we go. Would 00:01:06.140 --> 00:01:14.640 you take your Bibles with me and go to Genesis chapter 37? Genesis chapter 37. Week one, our theme 00:01:14.640 --> 00:01:22.019 here is favored but fallen. Favored but fallen. Let me give you a little brief introduction into 00:01:22.019 --> 00:01:28.500 the story of Genesis. The story of this part of Genesis of Joseph. All right. The overarching 00:01:28.500 --> 00:01:34.219 biblical theme here that I believe we can take away from the life of Joseph is that man meant 00:01:34.219 --> 00:01:43.439 this for evil, but God used it for good. Man meant this for evil, but God used it for good. 00:01:43.439 --> 00:01:55.739 The theme of Genesis, much of it can be traced to the family of Abraham. Abraham's family leading 00:01:55.739 --> 00:02:03.680 up to the story of Joseph would be a good background if we were going to study through the book of 00:02:03.680 --> 00:02:09.759 Genesis. And I tried to do as much study through Genesis as I could leading up to chapter 37 here 00:02:09.759 --> 00:02:17.639 in preparation for preaching this morning. And my takeaway here is that we live in God's good world 00:02:17.639 --> 00:02:26.159 gone bad. And that was the situation in which they found themselves in Genesis 37. They were living in 00:02:26.159 --> 00:02:35.299 God's good world gone bad. And through so much sin and failure, God kept giving his people chances. 00:02:35.300 --> 00:02:44.000 His chosen people, the Israelites. And of course, nowadays through the sacrifice of Jesus Christ, 00:02:44.219 --> 00:02:51.060 we get to be part of God's chosen people. It's no longer just the Hebrew people. Now he has opened 00:02:51.060 --> 00:02:57.040 it up to the Gentiles and all of us through the death and resurrection of Jesus Christ. Now there's 00:02:57.040 --> 00:03:03.060 no longer Jew and Gentile. There's no longer Jew and Greek. There's no longer male and female. All are now 00:03:03.060 --> 00:03:08.860 one Ephesians teaches us through the blood of Jesus. Thank God for his sacrifice, right? 00:03:10.080 --> 00:03:17.920 So now through so much sin and failure, God keeps giving us a chance to, and we thank God for his 00:03:17.920 --> 00:03:25.879 continued grace. He extends toward us. We also see this thing, that God's ways are not man's ways. 00:03:26.340 --> 00:03:32.860 Isaiah chapter 55 verses eight and nine reminds us that God's ways are higher than ours. God's ways are 00:03:32.860 --> 00:03:42.720 not man's ways. So the overarching biblical theme is that God continues to extend grace in spite of 00:03:42.720 --> 00:03:53.260 failure. And while man's evil conspires to throw God's plan off track, somehow through God's divine 00:03:53.259 --> 00:04:06.560 sovereign power, his good always wins the day. So let's see how this happens. Let's look at Genesis chapter 37, 00:04:06.919 --> 00:04:13.019 beginning in verse two, before we dive into the text, I'd like you to look at the screen with me. Would you real quick 00:04:13.019 --> 00:04:21.599 throughout the life of Joseph, we are going to see different types of Christ. How many of you have heard 00:04:21.600 --> 00:04:26.920 the phrase? If you've been in church for a little while, type of Christ, you ever heard that before? 00:04:27.200 --> 00:04:31.540 Type of Christ. Don't be afraid. You can raise your hand. It's okay. Yeah, there you go. I got a couple 00:04:31.540 --> 00:04:39.680 of you out there. A type of Christ is someone who is not Jesus. The Christ is generally who we would call 00:04:39.680 --> 00:04:46.439 Jesus, right? That is Jesus, the Christ child. So Christ is another name for Jesus, God himself. 00:04:46.439 --> 00:04:54.360 But a type of Christ is someone who is not God, who we see in scripture, who portrays a character 00:04:54.360 --> 00:05:00.600 trait of God, someone who is not God, and we should not confuse them for God, but someone who is a 00:05:00.600 --> 00:05:09.980 forerunner, someone who would portray part of the story of who Jesus would become. And so we see part of 00:05:09.980 --> 00:05:17.759 who Jesus would become in the life of Joseph. And arguably, Joseph might be our most accurate, 00:05:17.960 --> 00:05:23.800 our best type of Christ that we see in the scriptures. You could certainly make an argument 00:05:23.800 --> 00:05:28.800 for that as we go through the life of Joseph. When we see the first type of Christ right here 00:05:28.800 --> 00:05:35.680 in Genesis 37, the favored son. Anybody know that Jesus was the favored son? 00:05:35.680 --> 00:05:46.340 Up in heaven, God's son. He was the favored son. John 3, 16, the only one, only begotten son, right? 00:05:46.879 --> 00:05:52.199 Jesus was the favored son. So let's get into the text here. I've got some of it on the screen for 00:05:52.199 --> 00:05:58.060 you today. Genesis 37, verse 2. I'm reading from the New Living Translation. This is the account 00:05:58.060 --> 00:06:05.000 of Jacob and his family. When Joseph was 17 years old, he often tended his father's flocks. 00:06:05.000 --> 00:06:11.319 He worked for his half-brothers, the sons of his father's wives, Bilhah and Zilpah. 00:06:12.600 --> 00:06:16.620 We're going to have all kinds of fun with the names in the Old Testament during this book, okay? 00:06:18.000 --> 00:06:21.660 Have you noticed that I've primarily preached from the New Testament since I got here? 00:06:22.160 --> 00:06:26.540 There's a reason for that. The names are a whole lot easier, okay? That's not the real reason. 00:06:26.540 --> 00:06:33.740 But Joseph, now I did go through Jonah. Did y'all have fun in Jonah? I had so much fun in Jonah. 00:06:34.939 --> 00:06:37.780 We're going back to the Old Testament. We're going to go through Joseph. Here we go. 00:06:38.100 --> 00:06:44.860 But Joseph reported to his father some of the bad things his brothers were doing. Anybody ever done 00:06:44.860 --> 00:06:49.620 that? Anybody ever reported to your dad some of the bad things your brothers were doing? 00:06:49.620 --> 00:06:57.540 How did that work out for you with your brothers? Did they appreciate that? Were you very popular with 00:06:57.540 --> 00:07:03.379 your brothers after you did that? Did that win you favor with your siblings after you went and told 00:07:03.379 --> 00:07:12.560 on them to your dad? No? Can't imagine why. Here we go. Verse 3. Jacob loved Joseph more than any of his 00:07:12.560 --> 00:07:23.199 other children because Joseph had been born to him in his old age. So number one, we've got Joseph 00:07:23.199 --> 00:07:31.840 telling on his brothers. Number two, we've got the dad loving Joseph more than all the other brothers. 00:07:33.439 --> 00:07:41.180 Let's keep reading. So one day Jacob had a special gift made for Joseph. What was it? 00:07:42.560 --> 00:07:52.000 Coat of many colors. I've got up here a beautiful robe. Your Bible probably has something very similar 00:07:52.000 --> 00:07:54.199 staring back at you. 00:07:57.079 --> 00:08:00.800 So it should be no surprise to us to read in verse 4, 00:08:02.079 --> 00:08:10.240 but his brothers hated Joseph because their father loved him more than the rest of them. 00:08:10.240 --> 00:08:15.079 They couldn't say a kind word to him. 00:08:17.500 --> 00:08:19.040 done a lot of study on this. 00:08:52.639 --> 00:09:00.679 And the best that they've come up with is this coat seemingly could have signified 00:09:00.679 --> 00:09:10.299 that this coat was kind of who the family would pass on to. 00:09:10.299 --> 00:09:19.419 So the coat should have gone to the oldest son because whoever got the coat got the family, 00:09:19.740 --> 00:09:28.019 got the inheritance, all the family wealth, riches, land, everything would go on. 00:09:28.359 --> 00:09:31.799 So the coat was more than just a pretty piece of material. 00:09:32.319 --> 00:09:33.679 It was very important. 00:09:33.679 --> 00:09:43.099 If that was indeed the case, then this was more than just, 00:09:44.019 --> 00:09:46.379 oh, he went out and bought me a new pair of Nikes, 00:09:46.959 --> 00:09:50.139 or he went out and bought me a new pair of cowboy boots, you know? 00:09:51.379 --> 00:09:57.659 This was more than just, dad had a nice coat made for Joseph. 00:09:58.939 --> 00:10:02.259 This was a massive, massive blow. 00:10:02.259 --> 00:10:07.700 And do you realize where Joseph was in the line of the sons? 00:10:08.879 --> 00:10:10.220 He was the youngest. 00:10:11.419 --> 00:10:15.519 Now, if you've read ahead in the story, you know there was going to come another one later, right? 00:10:15.919 --> 00:10:19.419 But at this moment, he was the youngest of how many? 00:10:20.899 --> 00:10:23.539 At the time, it was 11. 00:10:24.039 --> 00:10:25.439 At the time, it was 11. 00:10:25.600 --> 00:10:27.120 So he was 11th. 00:10:27.120 --> 00:10:33.039 So there's 10 angry brothers who are saying, 00:10:33.580 --> 00:10:37.120 well, I understand if he's mad at the oldest, 00:10:37.460 --> 00:10:39.519 and I understand if he's mad at the second oldest, 00:11:28.579 Look, we can identify with that to a certain extent. 00:11:28.939 --> 00:11:31.179 All of our families have a level of dysfunction 00:11:31.179 --> 00:11:33.120 because we are all sinful people. 00:11:33.439 --> 00:11:34.199 We all struggle. 00:11:35.039 --> 00:11:37.360 Every one of us, none of us come from a perfect family. 00:11:37.819 --> 00:11:39.079 We all struggle a little bit. 00:11:39.500 --> 00:11:40.519 We all have our fights. 00:11:40.519 --> 00:11:41.799 We all have our disagreements. 00:11:41.799 --> 00:11:43.740 We're all plagued by sin. 00:11:43.879 --> 00:11:46.419 So, we can all relate to a degree 00:11:46.419 --> 00:11:49.019 with what Joseph is going through. 00:11:49.879 --> 00:11:52.879 What's going on with the favoritism shown here, right? 00:11:53.899 --> 00:11:55.879 So, let's take a warning. 00:11:56.559 --> 00:11:57.419 Warning number 1. 00:11:57.699 --> 00:12:00.500 Promotion can lead to pride. 00:12:00.899 --> 00:12:01.959 What are we talking about? 00:12:02.059 --> 00:12:04.139 Promotion can lead to pride. 00:12:04.219 --> 00:12:07.079 We're about to see it unfold in this story. 00:12:07.080 --> 00:12:12.759 The 11th son got the family coat that should have gone to the oldest, 00:12:13.180 --> 00:12:16.280 meaning that he would be in charge of the family when Jacob died. 00:12:16.340 --> 00:12:17.300 It's a big deal. 00:12:17.680 --> 00:12:21.280 And now you've got all these seeds of anger. 00:12:21.740 --> 00:12:24.360 And anger can lead to bitterness. 00:12:24.620 --> 00:12:26.320 And bitterness can lead to hatred. 00:12:26.320 --> 00:12:31.500 And then hatred can lead to all kinds of tragedy. 00:12:33.040 --> 00:12:36.160 And if you know the story, you know that that's about to happen. 00:12:37.020 --> happens. 00:12:57.200 --> 00:12:59.340 Back in Genesis 37 and verse 5. 00:12:59.439 --> 00:13:01.460 One night, Joseph had a dream. 00:13:02.399 --> 00:13:04.000 And when he told his brothers about it, 00:13:04.639 --> 00:13:06.779 they hated him more than ever. 00:13:07.759 --> 00:13:09.879 You ever had a dream and told somebody about it? 00:13:09.879 --> 00:13:15.860 Have you ever had a dream that you were going to rule over somebody else 00:13:15.860 --> 00:13:17.059 and then told them about it? 00:13:17.899 --> 00:13:19.039 Was that just Joseph? 00:13:19.399 --> 00:13:21.399 I can't say I've ever had that kind of dream ever. 00:13:21.799 --> 00:13:22.299 Verse 6. 00:13:22.399 --> 00:13:23.299 Listen to this dream. 00:13:23.360 --> 00:13:26.519 He said, we were out in the field tying up bundles of grain. 00:13:26.879 --> 00:13:28.879 Suddenly, my bundle stood up. 00:13:28.879 --> 00:13:34.259 And your bundles all gathered around and bowed low before mine. 00:13:35.700 --> 00:13:37.019 Now, y'all look. 00:13:37.019 --> 00:13:41.059 I could be reading this wrong. 00:13:42.139 --> 00:13:46.159 And I'm not going to say that every theologian who has studied this passage 00:15:35.419 as well as to his brothers. 00:15:36.079 --> 00:15:37.839 But his father scolded him. 00:15:37.899 --> 00:15:39.599 Remember, he was his father's favorite son. 00:15:40.919 -->
