repentance, and how God's mission is dependent on him, and him alone. 00:02:40.659 --> 00:02:46.099 So Jonah's mission was to go to the land of Nineveh, the great city of Nineveh, 00:02:46.219 --> 00:02:49.340 and preach to them because their evil had come up against the Lord. 00:02:52.319 --> 00:02:59.659 Maybe today your mission is to repent of unbelief, or unfaithfulness, or idolatry. 00:03:00.379 --> 00:03:05.719 What I failed to talk about though last week was why God calls us to repentance. 00:03:06.359 --> 00:03:13.340 Why does God call us, make us do something that is difficult? 00:03:14.099 --> 00:03:16.000 What is the reason for God? 00:03:16.079 --> 00:03:22.639 Why should we turn from our sins that a lot of times are enjoyable? 00:03:22.639 --> 00:03:27.879 Why would God make us do something difficult? 00:03:29.079 --> 00:03:32.819 The answer is that God loves his children. 00:03:33.779 --> 00:03:37.619 God loves his children and has called us to be holy. 00:03:39.219 --> 00:03:42.359 For his word says, be holy as I am holy. 00:03:42.360 --> 00:03:49.920 God showed his love to Jonah by not allowing him to finish his journey to Tarshish. 00:03:52.920 --> 00:03:55.860 Which he went on in complete disobedience. 00:03:55.860 --> 00:04:01.320 See, what we and what Jonah says to God is, 00:04:02.900 --> 00:04:05.840 surely God, you love me too much. 00:04:06.100 --> 00:04:14.860 You love me too much to make me go do something that my spirit or my conviction just doesn't agree with. 00:04:17.259 --> 00:04:20.340 Surely God, you love me too much to make me do that. 00:04:20.339 --> 00:04:27.919 But God says to us, I love you too much to not make you go do that. 00:04:28.879 --> 00:04:32.620 I love you too much to not make you holy. 00:04:32.739 book of Jonah, God hurls a storm at Jonah. 00:06:28.219 --> 00:06:31.639 Like a man throwing a spear. 00:06:32.639 --> 00:06:38.620 God hurls this storm at Jonah to stop him where he's at to bring him back to what God had commanded him to do. 00:06:38.620 --> 00:06:49.939 And the ultimate way that God shows us love, of course, we all know is through Christ Jesus. 00:06:49.939 --> 00:06:55.579 Through the death and resurrection and life of Christ. 00:06:56.980 --> 00:07:02.180 And here in Jonah chapter 1, God provides salvation to the sailors. 00:07:03.420 --> 00:07:07.019 Physically and as we'll see, spiritually. 00:07:08.159 --> 00:07:11.120 So God's salvation is our topic this morning. 00:07:12.879 --> 00:07:15.319 Salvation is an act of the sovereign God. 00:07:15.839 --> 00:07:17.100 Creator of the universe. 00:07:17.100 --> 00:07:20.040 The one who controls the sea and calms the storm. 00:07:21.520 --> 00:07:27.820 And those who seek salvation in morality, in religion, or in self will die. 00:07:28.879 --> 00:07:32.360 Only salvation by God leads to life. 00:07:33.680 --> 00:07:36.500 And I can stand up here and I can say with full assurance. 00:07:37.260 00:08:18.079 --> 00:08:20.460 So I have two points this morning. 00:08:20.720 --> 00:08:25.019 And the first one is salvation is an act of the sovereign God. 00:08:27.699 --> 00:08:30.899 Salvation is an act of the sovereign God. 00:08:30.899 --> 00:08:33.480 God is pretty basic, pretty elementary. 00:08:34.559 --> 00:08:37.120 But it's a truth we have to grasp. 00:08:38.159 --> 00:08:51.559 Before we dig in, I want to point out to you some of the events that have taken place where God has used and been in control of to bring the sailors and bring Jonah to the point at the end of chapter one. 00:08:51.559 --> 00:08:55.519 First of all, clearly, we know the story. 00:08:55.639 --> 00:08:56.879 Jonah disobeys God. 00:08:57.519 --> 00:09:02.259 He goes the exact opposite of where God tells him to go. 00:09:02.519 --> 00:09:07.500 And when I say opposite, I mean, it's not I'm not exaggerating. 00:09:07.579 --> 00:09:08.339 It is the opposite. 00:09:08.719 --> 00:09:09.979 Even opposite in direction. 00:09:09.980 --> 00:09:15.600 And so God hurls a storm at him to bring him back. 00:09:17.120 --> 00:09:19.539 You know, it kind of reminds me of Joseph. 00:09:20.240 --> 00:09:30.259 And when he's talking to his brothers in chapter 50 of Genesis, where he said, you meant this as evil, but God meant it as good so that I would save many. 00:09:30.259 --> 00:09:37.340 And Jonah may have said in his own words, you know, I messed up. 00:09:37.399 --> 00:09:37.939 I screwed up. 00:09:38.000 --> 00:09:38.960 I meant this as evil. 00:09:39.120 --> 00:09:46.179 But lo and behold, God, you've you've meant it for good because, look, the sailors, I mean, you save them physically. 00:09:46.580 --> 00:09:49.740 And in verse 16, you save them spiritually. 00:09:50.139 --> 00:09:50.159 And. 00:09:51.259 --> 00:09:52.179 Wow, God, I. 00:09:53.220 --> 00:09:56.240 I can't believe you use my disobedience like that. 00:09:56.240 --> 00:10:01.779 So we got we got Jonah's disobedience. 00:10:02.539 --> 00:10:06.399 We have pagan sailors casting lots to see whose fault it is. 00:10:07.620 --> 00:10:12.000 Now, what you what you have when they cast lots is not like a bunch of rocks. 00:10:12.000 --> 00:10:13.279 And then they try to read the rocks. 00:10:13.279 --> 00:10:15.720 It's usually like two rocks, two stones, pebbles. 00:10:16.080 --> 00:10:19.159 And they're painted on both sides with some sort of color. 00:10:20.200 --> 00:10:21.460 And they would throw them down. 00:10:21.560 --> 00:10:22.759 They would they would pick a person. 00:10:22.759 --> 00:10:27.000 And so Andy, we would say, OK, Andy, is it Andy's fault? 00:10:27.299 --> 00:10:28.960 And we would throw two rocks down. 00:10:29.000 --> 00:10:34.240 And if it was two dark colors up, then the answer would be no. 00:10:35.220 --> 00:10:37.939 But if it was two light colors, the answer would be yes. 00:10:37.960 --> 00:10:39.480 So we would say, OK, it's Andy's fault. 00:10:40.580 --> 00:10:43.759 time that that God has used casting lots. 00:10:52.980 --> 00:10:57.259 I mean, Proverbs 16, 33 says the lot is cast into the lap. 00:10:57.840 --> 00:11:00.440 But it's every decision is from the Lord. 00:11:01.500 --> 00:11:02.879 Every decision is from the Lord. 00:11:05.900 --> 00:11:14.259 If I asked you each individual person how you came to know the Lord, if I said, tell me your story. 00:11:14.259 --> 00:11:16.500 What is your salvation story? 00:11:16.840 --> 00:11:18.799 Most of the stories in here would be different. 00:11:18.960 --> 00:11:21.019 There'd be something different about it. 00:11:23.220 --> 00:11:28.120 It could be, you know, one event or events that brought you to salvation. 00:11:28.279 --> 00:11:29.639 It could be a book or books. 00:11:30.159 --> 00:11:32.620 It could be a one conversation or many. 00:11:33.879 --> 00:11:35.919 But each story is different in detail. 00:11:36.220 --> 00:11:38.799 But but hear me not in substance. 00:11:39.899 --> 00:11:41.720 It's all the same in substance. 00:11:41.720 --> 00:11:45.980 And for here in the book of Jonah. 00:11:47.379 --> 00:11:50.580 In the sailors, God used events. 00:11:51.820 --> 00:11:54.040 That led to fear. 00:11:55.720 --> 00:11:57.560 To move them to salvation. 00:11:57.899 --> 00:11:59.300 OK, you got the progression. 00:11:59.779 --> 00:12:06.700 God used events in fear to move them to salvation physically and as we'll see spiritually. 00:12:07.399 --> 00:12:10.700 So look at verse five of chapter one. 00:12:11.720 --> 00:12:14.840 We have the sailors fear of the storm. 00:12:15.920 --> 00:12:24.040 Then the mariners were afraid and each cried out to his God and they hurled the cargo that was in the ship into the sea to lighten it for them. 00:12:24.039 --> 00:12:31.319 The sailors feared the situation. 00:12:31.319 --> 00:12:33.259 They feared for their lives. 00:12:35.259 --> 00:12:44.899 And I just wondering how many near death experiences have you have you heard or stories of where God used to redeem a person, to save a person? 00:12:44.899 --> 00:12:46.399 They're out there. 00:12:47.559 --> 00:12:50.419 Plane crash, car crash, whatever. 00:12:52.959 --> 00:12:53.980 Shark attack. 00:12:59.319 --> 00:13:03.620 Maybe there's someone here who who has a story like the sailors. 00:13:03.620 --> 00:13:08.379 I'm not saying you're in a ship in the sea and a big wind out of the middle of nowhere comes in. 00:13:08.500 --> 00:13:12.940 But, you know, God has has rocked your world with some something. 00:13:13.360 --> 00:13:14.820 And this is what we have. 00:13:17.519 --> 00:13:20.240 The sailors thought that death was inevitable. 00:13:21.519 --> 00:13:24.000 They started throwing out all their supplies. 00:13:24.000 --> 00:13:28.559 They went from from this is a great ride to we're going to die. 00:13:32.159 --> 00:13:35.200 And the only way that they felt like they were going to survive was. 00:13:36.779 --> 00:13:39.460 Their instincts and let's start throwing things out. 00:13:42.200 --> 00:13:43.039 Verse nine. 00:13:43.899 --> 00:13:46.600 So the verse five, they were they were afraid of the. 00:13:47.799 --> 00:13:49.340 They were afraid of the storm. 00:13:50.300 --> 00:13:53.759 Verse nine, Jonah says to says that he fears the Lord. 00:13:54.759 --> 00:13:58.740 And I was stuck on this verse for most of the week. 00:13:59.580 --> 00:14:02.080 This verse just kept rolling in my head. 00:14:02.460 --> 00:14:04.500 I don't understand how he can say this. 00:14:04.560 --> 00:14:07.519 And yet his actions are completely opposite of this. 00:14:07.600 --> 00:14:08.360 Look at verse nine. 00:14:09.800 --> 00:14:11.800 Verse eight, they ask him, who is he? 00:14:11.879 --> 00:14:12.060 Where? 00:14:12.220 --> 00:14:12.980 What have you done? 00:14:14.860 --> 00:14:16.740 In the middle of this raging storm. 00:14:16.740 --> 00:14:24.560 And he says to them, I am a Hebrew and I fear the Lord, the God of heaven, who made the sea and the dry land. 00:14:28.820 --> 00:14:30.740 I just get it. 00:14:31.379 --> 00:14:33.740 What is God trying to say to us? 00:14:34.519 --> 00:14:39.220 When we clearly see from the events before this, Jonah does not fear the Lord. 00:14:40.879 --> 00:14:42.680 And I think I finally figured it out. 00:14:42.679 --> 00:14:46.059 And it's simple. 00:14:46.219 --> say that they believe in God, but do not live like it? 00:14:58.000 --> 00:15:10.039 How many of you pull out your family of God membership card and say the right things and read off of it? 00:15:11.820 --> 00:15:16.539 What you're supposed to say and in reality live a life that is contradictory to this. 00:15:16.820 --> 00:15:24.440 And that's basically what Jonah, he's like, he pulls out his family of Israel, Jewish Hebrew membership card. 00:15:24.440 --> 00:15:26.420 And on the back, it tells him exactly what to say. 00:15:26.480 --> 00:15:31.880 And so he reads, I am a Hebrew and I fear the Lord, God of heaven, who made the sea and the dry land. 00:15:34.660 --> 00:15:37.440 But his actions don't line up with what he's saying. 00:15:38.720 --> 00:15:39.780 This this fear.
