That we might receive the promised spirit through faith. 00:00:36.920 --> 00:00:42.939 I want us together this evening to pick up on what we have been studying in the past months and the times that I've been with you. 00:00:43.480 --> 00:00:48.879 And that is to look at the benefits of the cross of Jesus Christ. 00:00:49.299 --> 00:00:59.100 If it is true and it is that Jesus himself is the gospel, then Jesus is the most important person that we can think about. 00:01:00.000 --> 00:01:06.500 And Jesus becomes the most important person we can think about when we realize who we are. 00:01:06.959 --> 00:01:14.480 And right through the pages of the gospels and of these letters, the word of God engages with us, 00:01:15.000 --> 00:01:24.379 seeking to raise in our minds the sense of our need of God's salvation and the preciousness of the Lord Jesus Christ. 00:01:24.379 --> 00:01:31.879 We saw in 2 Corinthians chapter 5 the cross of Christ and the message of reconciliation. 00:01:32.359 --> 00:01:40.379 How God takes the initiative and he brings us to himself and he makes peace with us through the Lord Jesus. 00:01:41.060 --> 00:01:47.379 We saw in 1 John chapter 4 the message of the cross and the message of propitiation, 00:01:47.379 --> 00:01:54.439 where the anger of God is turned away in the cross work of the Lord Jesus. 00:01:56.239 --> 00:02:06.939 When we look at the letter to this church, there are so many interesting things that connect us with what Paul is saying and who he is writing to. 00:02:06.939 --> 00:02:17.039 And he is writing this letter, first of all, because he is defending the gospel that has been given to him. 00:02:17.680 --> 00:02:27.340 And we read at the beginning of the chapter the way in which he is referring to those who are preaching a gospel that's different to the gospel that he gave to them. 00:02:27.340 --> 00:02:30.159 And that's a major problem. 00:02:31.060 --> 00:02:37.840 That there is a message which is there to counteract and to go against the message of the gospel itself. 00:02:38.120 --> 00:02:41.759 Not that it is entirely or 100% against the gospel. 00:02:42.400 --> 00:02:50.020 And the issue is that it's close to the gospel, but it is a departure from the gospel that Paul is preaching. 00:02:50.980 --> 00:02:54.520 And that, of course, creates confusion. 00:02:54.520 --> 00:02:59.040 And wherever there are two messages, we get confused. 00:02:59.780 --> 00:03:04.140 And where there are mixed messages taken from the Bible, then we get confused. 00:03:04.439 --> 00:03:07.360 And we get confused to our harem. 00:03:08.560 --> 00:03:19.280 And we can perhaps highlight three things that show us the confusion that the people in Galatia suffered from because of the wrong teaching. 00:03:20.060 --> 00:03:23.760 There is, first of all, there is a faith problem. 00:03:23.759 --> 00:03:28.599 There are those who are departing from the faith because of the confusion. 00:03:30.099 --> 00:03:39.340 There is also a fullness problem in the sense that they are beginning to think that Jesus is not enough. 00:03:40.340 --> 00:03:41.979 And that's a major problem. 00:03:42.859 --> 00:03:47.180 And they are also having problems with how they relate to each other. 00:03:47.180 --> 00:03:55.520 So the confused message of the gospel that is given to them to contradict Paul's message creates all of that confusion. 00:03:56.580 --> 00:04:00.360 And bearing that in mind, I want us to look at these verses this evening. 00:04:00.360 --> 00:04:05.440 I've done a gospel coaching course. 00:04:06.080 --> 00:04:12.380 And there are different matrices used to help people at different stages of their ministry. 00:04:13.380 --> 00:04:24.759 And one of these matrices seeks to highlight particular gaps that may interfere with a person being able to carry out their ministry effectively. 00:04:24.759 --> 00:04:26.980 And there are three gaps. 00:04:27.560 --> 00:04:30.480 The first of these is a knowledge gap. 00:04:31.439 --> 00:04:36.279 People don't have the knowledge to fulfill their ministry effectively. 00:04:37.240 --> 00:04:39.459 The second gap is a skills gap. 00:04:40.300 --> 00:04:44.959 People don't have the skills to go with their knowledge to enable them to fulfill their ministry. 00:04:44.959 --> 00:04:49.120 There is then the motivation gap. 00:04:50.139 --> 00:04:56.680 That unless people are motivated by the love of God and the love of Christ, then they won't be able to fulfill ministry. 00:04:57.399 --> 00:05:06.599 Three gaps that are ideas that we can borrow and bring into the very way in which we are called among to serve the Lord Jesus Christ. 00:05:07.419 --> 00:05:12.899 And if there is a gap in our knowledge, then everything else is going to suffer. 00:05:12.899 --> 00:05:17.599 And we want to carry that idea with us as we look at these verses. 00:05:18.319 --> 00:05:21.060 The fact that there is a knowledge gap. 00:05:21.839 --> 00:05:24.060 That knowledge gap is creating confusion. 00:05:24.919 --> 00:05:32.239 And the confusion is with regard to their appreciation of Jesus Christ in the gospel. 00:05:33.120 --> 00:05:39.359 And so against that background, I want to think of the cross of Jesus and the message of redemption. 00:05:39.360 --> 00:05:39.540 Confusion. 00:05:40.620 --> 00:05:44.240 I want to think first of all of the problem. 00:05:45.939 --> 00:05:49.900 And I mentioned confusion and the problem is that same confusion. 00:05:51.120 --> 00:05:55.340 And in the confusion, there are two aspects to it. 00:05:56.379 --> 00:06:03.199 And the first part of the confusion is that there are those who don't need the Lord Jesus Christ. 00:06:03.199 --> 00:06:06.000 That's who verse 10 begins. 00:06:06.120 --> 00:06:08.819 For all who rely on the works of the law. 00:06:09.599 --> 00:06:12.680 Their lives are given over, lived out of the law. 00:06:13.360 --> 00:06:21.740 And reckoning that through their observance of God's law, that they are the children of God and that they belong to the kingdom of God. 00:06:21.740 --> 00:06:29.280 Everything that they do is motivated by their understanding of what the law of God means. 00:06:29.519 --> 00:06:36.439 And based on that, they are confident that they can live their lives in such a way that will please God. 00:06:36.879 --> 00:06:42.160 And that will bring them into the very kingdom of God and be the children of God. 00:06:42.160 --> 00:06:48.500 And we read what Paul is saying here and it's clearly referring to the law that was given to Moses. 00:06:48.660 --> 00:06:56.240 So they're looking back to the words that God spoke to Moses to give to the people as his covenant people. 00:06:56.800 --> 00:07:00.520 And that law is the law that they are relying upon. 00:07:00.519 --> 00:07:10.879 So there is that confusion in that category of people who don't see their need for the Lord Jesus. 00:07:12.199 --> 00:07:16.859 And the second group that are confused is those who are already Christians. 00:07:17.500 --> 00:07:21.959 And we see at the beginning of this chapter that they are those who are already Christians. 00:07:22.620 --> 00:07:27.359 And they are convinced that they need more than Christ for salvation. 00:07:27.360 --> 00:07:33.620 And those who are speaking about the law and enforcing the law upon this people, 00:07:34.379 --> 00:07:39.520 they have persuaded them that as well as having faith in the Lord Jesus Christ, 00:07:39.860 --> 00:07:47.580 that they need to have their salvation brought to its perfection and completion by relying on the works of the law. 00:07:48.920 --> 00:07:56.780 And so there is the first category, they are Christless because they don't see the need for Christ. 00:07:56.779 --> 00:08:01.799 There is the second category, they have the Christ plus problem. 00:08:02.639 --> 00:08:05.519 They are looking for more than the Lord Jesus. 00:08:07.500 --> 00:08:12.939 And I want to suggest to you tonight that as surely as this was true in Galatia, 00:08:13.579 --> 00:08:18.799 it can be true in Stornoway, it can be true in the Church of Christ in every generation, 00:08:19.459 --> 00:08:23.699 that there are these two categories of people as well as other categories. 00:08:23.699 --> 00:08:31.879 And tonight I am sure there are those here who rely upon what they do themselves 00:08:31.879 --> 00:08:36.200 and your attendance in church and your attention to the things of God, 00:08:36.720 --> 00:08:39.720 rely upon these things for your salvation. 00:08:39.720 --> 00:08:49.240 And sadly too, there may be people who are the children of God 00:08:49.240 --> 00:08:56.899 and who don't see that their salvation in Christ is complete without doing things themselves 00:08:56.899 --> 00:09:01.820 and recognizing that we are called to serve the Lord Jesus, 00:09:02.220 --> 00:09:03.639 to be doers of the Word, 00:09:03.639 --> 00:09:09.100 but not doers in a sense to complete our salvation and our acceptance with God. 00:09:10.659 --> 00:09:15.299 And we need to ask ourselves as we journey on through these verses tonight, 00:09:16.000 --> 00:09:19.740 do we find ourselves in any one of these categories? 00:09:19.740 --> 00:09:29.480 Because if we do, we haven't understood and appreciated the value of the passion and work of the Lord Jesus. 00:09:30.120 --> 00:09:32.200 We are looking to what we can do, 00:09:32.560 --> 00:09:38.060 and you are looking to what you can do in order to have the complete salvation. 00:09:38.879 --> 00:09:41.139 That is the confusion. 00:09:41.139 --> 00:09:50.899 And the problem with the confusion is that it does not align with the teaching of the Word of God. 00:09:52.500 --> 00:09:57.600 And the stark truth that Paul brings before the church in Galatia 00:09:57.600 --> 00:10:02.000 is the truth that God wants us to contend with this evening 00:10:02.000 --> 00:10:07.220 as those who are in the same categories as the people in the church of Galatia, 00:10:07.220 --> 00:10:12.540 to contend with the truth about the works of the law 00:10:12.540 --> 00:10:14.519 and about those who trust in them. 00:10:15.960 --> 00:10:20.220 And that's where Paul continues in verse number 10. 00:10:20.759 --> 00:10:23.920 For all who rely on the works of the law are under a curse, 00:10:24.320 --> 00:10:25.139 for it is written, 00:10:25.360 --> 00:10:30.399 Cursed be everyone who does not abide by all things written in the book of the law 00:10:30.399 --> 00:10:35.800 and to do them under a curse. 00:10:37.220 --> 00:10:39.300 And what does that mean? 00:10:40.180 --> 00:10:41.899 To be under a curse. 00:10:42.980 --> 00:10:46.080 The curse in the Bible is to do with relationships. 00:10:47.320 --> 00:10:49.139 A relationship with God. 00:10:49.899 --> 00:10:54.620 Curse in the Bible has to do with a covenant relationship with God. 00:10:55.899 --> 00:11:01.000 It has to do with the fact that God has given to us boundaries for a relationship with Him. 00:11:01.000 --> 00:11:05.679 And if we live our lives within these boundaries, 00:11:05.879 --> 00:11:07.620 then we have the blessing of God, 00:11:07.960 --> 00:11:10.159 which is the opposite of the curse of God. 00:11:11.059 --> 00:11:15.179 But as soon as we cross the boundary and break the law of God, 00:11:15.480 --> 00:11:21.539 then the Bible tells us that we are under God's curse. 00:11:21.539 --> 00:11:28.579 How serious a matter is that? 00:11:30.579 --> 00:11:34.000 When we refer to the backdrop to these words, 00:11:34.719 --> 00:11:37.500 in Deuteronomy 27 and 28, 00:11:38.259 --> 00:11:40.779 it's alarming what that curse means. 00:11:40.779 --> 00:11:48.100 And it basically means that the God who delighted over His people to do them good 00:11:48.100 --> 00:11:51.139 now takes delight in their ruin. 00:11:52.079 --> 00:11:55.500 And the God who was their friend turns to be their enemy. 00:11:56.620 --> 00:11:59.059 And the God who protected them from their enemies 00:11:59.059 --> 00:12:03.699 gives them over to destruction at the hands of their enemies. 00:12:03.700 --> 00:12:13.860 It's the complete reversal of what was promised if they obeyed the law and the covenant of God. 00:12:17.300 --> 00:12:20.879 And God wants us to reckon with that this evening. 00:12:23.280 --> 00:12:26.759 To reckon with the seriousness of where we are 00:12:26.759 --> 00:12:29.600 as those who trust in the holy law of God 00:12:29.600 --> 00:12:32.140 and who think that's what our salvation is. 00:12:33.700 --> 00:12:36.580 To think about what we're doing if we're saying that 00:12:36.580 --> 00:12:38.320 that Jesus is not enough, 00:12:38.680 --> 00:12:40.500 that I need to do more work myself 00:12:40.500 --> 00:12:42.560 in order to complete my salvation. 00:12:43.900 --> 00:12:45.720 Whatever we're relying on works, 00:12:46.100 --> 00:12:49.100 God is telling us that is not the place for blessing. 00:12:49.660 --> 00:12:52.480 That is the place where my curse rests. 00:12:53.080 --> 00:12:57.900 And it rests upon all those who are covenant breakers. 00:12:57.899 --> 00:13:07.699 And that's where the greatest knowledge gap exists. 00:13:09.500 --> 00:13:11.519 And it exists, 00:13:11.919 --> 00:13:16.819 and such is the nature of its influence in our lives 00:13:16.819 --> 00:13:20.240 that we don't realize it exists. 00:13:20.240 --> 00:13:24.720 And Paul speaks in 2 Corinthians 4 about 00:13:24.720 --> 00:13:26.700 the God of this world 00:13:26.700 --> 00:13:29.159 blinding our minds, 00:13:29.480 --> 00:13:30.500 or the minds of unbelievers, 00:13:30.960 --> 00:13:32.580 so that they don't see the light 00:13:32.580 --> 00:13:33.980 of the knowledge of God's glory 00:13:33.980 --> 00:13:35.620 in the face of Jesus Christ. 00:13:37.620 --> 00:13:38.639 That means that 00:13:38.639 --> 00:13:40.700 you can be here this evening 00:13:40.700 --> 00:13:43.240 and under the gospel of Jesus Christ, 00:13:43.840 --> 00:13:45.340 relying upon your own works, 00:13:45.460 --> 00:13:46.680 the works of the law, 00:13:46.679 --> 00:13:48.239 for your salvation. 00:13:49.959 --> 00:13:52.779 And so blinded you are to your need 00:13:52.779 --> 00:13:55.239 that you are comfortable with that. 00:13:56.759 --> 00:13:59.620 And that your unbelief is a shield 00:13:59.620 --> 00:14:02.979 that protects you against the darts 00:14:02.979 --> 00:14:04.599 that come from the Word of God 00:14:04.599 -->
