whom we rub shoulders on a weekly basis. 00:04:04.280 --> 00:04:22.339 So just doing life has a very real potential to rob us of any assurance of being safe and secure in Christ, which is our series title. 00:04:22.339 --> 00:04:35.779 And in fact, it even gets more than that, because what happens is that so regularly we convince ourselves that the fact that we do suffer is evidence that God is 00:06:16.199 Not only is Christ working for me, but the Holy Spirit is working in me to give me assurance of being saved. 00:06:17.039 --> 00:06:22.219 And then also, knowing that the Holy Spirit confirms to me that I'm not only legally adopted, 00:06:22.220 --> 00:06:32.740 but a beloved child, given the full inheritance of Jesus, treated in exactly the same way as the Father treats Jesus. confidence in my salvation in Christ, in the everyday mess and struggle of life? 00:07:09.039 --> 00:07:09.719 That's the question. 00:07:09.720 --> 00:07:19.500 Our fourth reference point this morning, then, is to recognize that suffering is normal. 00:07:21.020 --> 00:07:28.720 Suffering is normal now, but glory is the grand finale for us. 00:07:31.200 --> 00:07:33.280 Those two things must be held together. 00:07:33.279 --> 00:07:39.199 Now, the reality for Christians is, to pinch a term from John Chapman's book, 00:07:39.739 --> 00:07:43.879 the reality for Christians is that we live with a foot in two worlds. 00:07:47.379 --> 00:07:50.839 So, we should expect life to be tough, whatever that continues. 00:07:51.739 --> 00:07:54.179 Living with tension is normal. 00:07:55.159 --> 00:08:00.059 Verse 17, Bo covered this last week, introduces the whole notion of suffering. 00:08:00.319 --> 00:08:02.919 And it becomes the link through to this next section. 00:08:02.920 --> 00:08:06.660 But we often miss the connection from verse 17 through into this section. 00:08:07.660 --> 00:08:11.379 See, the whole section that Bo dealt with last week, 12 through to 17, 00:08:11.819 --> 00:08:15.000 talks about our identification with Jesus. 00:08:15.400 --> 00:08:19.480 We are so closely identified with him that we are in him, 00:08:19.520 --> 00:08:21.000 and he is in us through his Holy Spirit. 00:08:21.180 --> 00:08:22.300 And we are adopted. 00:08:23.420 --> 00:08:25.580 We are one with him in God's family. 00:08:27.700 --> 00:08:29.560 We are joint heirs. comparative pictures, 00:09:16.640 --> 00:09:18.000 very strong metaphors, 00:09:18.560 --> 00:09:20.440 of what it means for us 00:09:20.440 --> 00:09:23.360 to have a foot in both worlds. 00:09:23.360 --> 00:09:27.860 So, having a foot in this world means living, for now, 00:09:28.360 --> 00:09:32.440 in a frustrating mess that we call life. 00:09:35.879 --> 00:09:37.240 Look at verse 00:14:01.060 But until then, the environment we live in is one in which sickness, decay, death, brokenness, tension, struggle and suffering is normal and unavoidable for us as Christians. 00:14:01.059 we ourselves, who have the first fruits of the Spirit, groan inwardly as we wait eagerly for adoption as sons, the redemption of our bodies. 00:14:45.700 --> 00:14:49.700 We groan. 00:14:50.340 --> didn't seem real. 00:18:39.839 --> 00:18:41.980 Yes, you'd checked the machinery and that was all working. 00:18:42.139 --> 00:18:44.240 You'd cleaned the sheds and they were all ready for the grain. 00:18:44.599 --> 00:18:49.940 But it just didn't seem real until that day when the header went into the first paddock. 00:18:50.839 --> 00:18:53.359 And you saw the bin on the header filled for the first time. 00:18:53.740 --> 00:18:56.879 And you saw that bin unload onto the chaser bin for the first time. 00:18:57.000 --> 00:18:59.899 And the first truck then drives into the silo and it's
