00:03:12.539 Those things that we are particularly tempted toward? 00:03:13.319 --> 00:03:17.520 Where are the dangers that we ought to be on guard against? 00:03:18.159 --> 00:03:22.219 Because from 00:05:09.259 and he says harsh words to great crowds. 00:05:09.920 --> 00:05:13.399 He's not interested only in getting a large audience. 00:05:14.220 --> 00:05:17.519 He's interested in people following him for the right reasons 00:05:17.519 --> 00:05:20.620 and understanding what it will cost them. 00:05:20.620 --> 00:05:23.280 So great crowds accompany him, 00:05:23.560 --> 00:05:24.980 us in our following of him. 00:07:20.939 --> 00:07:21.160 Okay? 00:07:22.100 --> 00:07:25.120 So, I suggest there are two main things 00:07:25.120 --> 00:07:28.160 that Jesus says gets in the way of our following him. 00:07:28.660 --> 00:07:29.699 Pleasures and pains. 00:07:31.920 --> 00:07:33.459 The pleasures of life, 00:07:33.560 --> 00:07:35.180 I think, are represented by the things 00:07:35.180 --> 00:07:36.680 Jesus tells us to hate. 00:07:37.280 --> 00:07:38.639 Look at the things he tells us. 00:07:39.019 --> 00:07:39.899 Mother and father, 00:07:40.319 --> 00:07:40.720 wife, 00:07:41.040 --> 00:07:41.399 children, 00:07:41.800 --> 00:07:42.939 even your own life. 00:07:43.340 --> 00:07:44.840 The natural question is, 00:07:44.980 --> 00:07:46.379 what's wrong with these things? 00:07:46.680 --> 00:07:48.340 And the correct response is, 00:07:48.620 --> 00:07:49.980 nothing's wrong with them. 00:07:50.620 --> 00:07:51.840 They're good things. 00:07:52.259 --> 00:07:53.420 They're joys. 00:07:53.560 --> 00:07:54.420 They are pleasures. 00:07:54.420 --> 00:07:57.759 But then why does Jesus tell us to hate them? 00:07:59.300 --> 00:08:04.840 I think it's because this is one direction from which danger might come. 00:08:05.759 --> 00:08:10.939 We might be tempted to enjoy these pleasures more than we enjoy Christ. 00:08:11.680 --> 00:08:14.360 Look also at the parable above ours here. 00:08:15.240 --> 00:08:16.980 Beginning in verse 15 there, 00:08:17.160 --> 00:08:20.600 you see this parable of a man who invites his friends to a banquet. 00:08:37.340 and children? 00:08:37.340 --> 00:08:44.360 I think he's aware that one of the dangers 00:08:44.360 --> 00:08:47.980 that would incline us away from following him 00:08:47.980 --> 00:08:49.879 is our pleasures. 00:08:49.879 --> 00:08:55.059 And the second category of things comes in the verse right afterwards. 00:08:55.580 --> 00:08:58.500 Take up your cross and follow me. 00:09:15.120 take up your cross, 00:09:15.179 --> 00:09:17.659 we realize that we're talking in religious vocabulary. 00:09:18.379 --> 00:09:21.700 And I want to sort of get away from that idea a little bit. 00:09:21.740 --> 00:09:25.399 I want to give you a sense of just how strange this might sound 00:09:25.399 --> 00:09:27.279 to Jesus's hearers. 00:09:27.279 --> 00:09:29.819 Remember when Jesus said these words, 00:09:29.959 --> 00:09:31.259 he wasn't crucified yet. 00:09:31.539 --> 00:09:34.299 The cross didn't have any religious significance whatsoever. 00:09:34.740 --> 00:09:35.839 So read it like this. 00:09:36.299 --> 00:09:38.039 If anyone is not willing to take up, 00:09:38.659 --> 00:09:40.759 to strap himself into an electric chair, 00:09:41.279 --> 00:09:42.399 he won't follow me. 00:09:43.019 --> 00:09:45.439 If any man's not willing to blindfold himself 00:09:45.439 --> 00:09:46.639 in front of a firing squad, 00:09:46.860 --> 00:09:47.699 he can't follow me. 00:09:48.059 --> 00:09:50.059 If anyone's not willing to kneel down 00:09:50.059 --> 00:09:51.419 on the executioner's block 00:09:51.419 --> 00:09:53.519 before a person with an enormous sword 00:09:53.519 --> 00:09:54.779 is going to decapitate you, 00:09:54.980 --> 00:09:56.139 he's not ready to follow me. 00:09:57.279 --> 00:10:00.399 These are the sort of things that Jesus says 00:10:00.399 --> 00:10:03.919 are necessary for following him. 00:10:05.659 --> 00:10:08.699 I think what's going on here is Jesus is aware 00:10:08.699 --> 00:10:10.000 that one of the dangers 00:10:10.000 --> 00:10:12.079 from the other side 00:10:12.079 --> 00:10:14.379 is the danger of pains. 00:10:15.039 --> 00:10:16.220 The dangers of pleasures 00:10:16.220 --> 00:10:18.159 and the dangers of pains. 00:10:18.659 --> 00:10:21.019 These, I think, are the two broad categories 00:10:21.019 --> 00:10:22.279 that Jesus sees 00:10:22.279 --> 00:10:25.439 as being able to turn our
