And chapter 24, it actually turns out it's the longest chapter in Genesis. 67 verses. 00:00:19.500 --> 00:00:26.839 So we're going to go through that today. And in this chapter, we have a love story. We have a love story, a romance story. 00:00:26.839 --> 00:00:32.840 Boy meets girl. Isaac, Abraham's son, is going to meet his wife, Rebecca. 00:00:33.740 --> 00:00:40.859 Up until now, for the last several weeks, months, our focus has been on Abraham since Genesis chapter 12. 00:00:41.120 --> 00:00:47.100 But now we see Abraham is nearing the end of his life. He's an old man, blessed by God in all things. 00:00:47.679 --> 00:00:52.560 And actually, in fact, last chapter, his wife, Sarah, has just passed away. 00:00:52.560 --> 00:01:05.200 And now we're shifting our focus to the next generation, to Isaac, to his son Isaac, the one that he's waited for, the one God promised, the one he almost had to sacrifice to God. 00:01:05.600 --> 00:01:11.620 And in our passage today, we'll see God providing a wife for Isaac. 00:01:11.620 --> 00:01:20.200 And here, it happens so easily. Abraham sends his servant to go find a wife for Isaac. 00:01:20.620 --> 00:01:25.400 And everything just falls into place. The servant prays for a specific sign. 00:01:25.780 --> 00:01:31.000 And it happens immediately. The first girl he sees, she does the sign that he prayed for. 00:01:31.900 --> 00:01:34.020 Don't we sometimes wish it were that easy? 00:01:34.019 --> 00:01:42.579 Now, this passage teaches us about relationships, about marriage, and what to look for in relationships. 00:01:42.579 --> 00:01:46.199 But today, I'm not going to talk about four steps to find a wife. 00:01:46.599 --> 00:01:49.579 Some of you guys probably wish I was preaching that sermon. I see you guys in the front. 00:01:50.419 --> 00:01:55.840 But as we read the story, I want to see something bigger than that. 00:01:56.120 --> 00:01:59.859 That God's providence is extending over all this. 00:01:59.859 --> 00:02:04.640 It's not just Isaac finding a wife, but God's hand was all over it. 00:02:04.680 --> 00:02:07.359 He was guiding every detail, orchestrating it. 00:02:08.300 --> 00:02:10.400 God's providence extends over all of it. 00:02:11.199 --> 00:02:15.840 And that word providence, that might not be one that we use a lot in our vocabulary. 00:02:16.840 --> 00:02:23.079 John Piper defines providence as God's wise and purposeful sovereignty. 00:02:24.099 --> 00:02:25.800 Sovereignty means that God's in control. 00:02:26.319 --> 00:02:28.439 He is in control of everything. 00:02:28.439 --> 00:02:35.139 God's providence means that he uses his sovereignty for his good and wise purposes. 00:02:35.599 --> 00:02:41.180 And in Genesis 24, we'll see God arranging 00:14:01.979 --> 00:14:08.279 The chapter begins with Abraham commanding his servant to do some matchmaking for Isaac. 00:14:09.339 --> 00:14:11.339 And as we read this, I want us to observe this. 00:14:11.459 --> 00:14:16.439 That Abraham has full confidence that this mission will succeed. 00:14:16.440 --> 00:14:20.640 Abraham has full confidence in God's providence. 00:14:21.180 --> 00:14:22.860 He says in verse 7. 00:14:23.380 --> 00:14:26.520 The Lord, the God of heaven, he will send his angel before you. 00:14:26.620 --> 00:14:29.780 And you shall take a wife for my son from there. 00:14:30.500 --> 00:14:34.540 Trust that God will send an angel and make this mission prosper. 00:14:34.960 --> 00:14:39.440 Why does Abraham have this confidence that God will provide? thinking, I really need to find a wife. 00:15:11.939 --> 00:15:13.059 And maybe that's true for you. 00:15:13.839 --> 00:15:18.579 But here, Isaac absolutely, certainly needs to find a wife. 00:15:18.859 --> 00:15:23.359 And that's because God made a covenant with Abraham. 00:15:23.360 --> 00:15:33.320 God bound himself in relationship to Abraham and promised to make his descendants as numerous as the stars in the sky. 00:15:33.320 --> 00:15:35.620 He will make Abraham into a great nation. 00:15:36.139 --> 00:15:40.060 And in Abraham's offspring, all the nations of the earth will be blessed. 00:15:40.300 --> 00:15:41.840 That's God's promise to Abraham. 00:15:41.840 --> 00:15:47.639 And we've learned that the promise will come through Abraham's son, Isaac. 00:15:48.639 --> 00:15:51.560 So for that to happen, Isaac needs to get married. 00:15:51.759 --> 00:15:52.920 To have children. 00:15:53.300 --> 00:15:54.180 So that he can have offspring. 00:15:54.519 --> 00:15:59.480 And so Abraham reasons out that God must provide Isaac a wife. 00:15:59.620 --> 00:16:00.940 He's bound by his covenant. 00:16:01.360 --> 00:16:06.360 And that faith, that trust that God will provide, that God promised, 00:16:06.720 --> 00:16:08.920 it shapes how Abraham goes about this mission. 00:16:08.919 --> 00:16:12.979 He sends out his servant with some strict requirements. 00:16:25.939 If God promises to provide for us, we don't have to settle and do it our way, 00:16:26.019 --> 00:16:28.639 as we've seen Abraham do time and time again before. 00:16:30.279 --> 00:16:33.779 First, Abraham says in verse 3, this is the first requirement. 00:16:34.439 --> 00:16:35.219 He says in verse 3, 00:16:35.220 --> 00:16:47.000 Now, problem is, they were living in the land of Canaan. 00:16:47.180 --> 00:16:48.399 They were living among Canaanites. 00:16:48.500 --> 00:16:50.879 It'd be so easy to find a Canaanite wife. 00:16:50.960 --> 00:16:51.820 The servant can go out. 00:16:52.340 --> 00:16:53.560 There's Canaanites everywhere. 00:16:53.680 --> 00:16:54.920 They were living in that land. 00:16:54.919 --> 00:17:00.759 But instead, Abraham tells his servant, kilometers. 00:17:16.160 --> 00:17:28.140 And not only that, he has to go to this place, maybe he's never even been, find one of Abraham's distant relatives, who knows what he looks like, and find a God made with Abraham was at risk of being swallowed up by the Canaanites, by their neighbors. 00:18:05.879 --> 00:18:15.919 And not just any neighbors, but by a people that we learned in Genesis had finished speaking, behold, Rebecca. 00:28:18.159 --> 00:28:27.819 So as the servant was praying, as the servant was asking God for the sign, before he even finished his sentence, there, Rebecca gets more confirmation. 00:29:17.980 --> 00:29:19.600 He asked her who she is. 00:29:19.700 --> 00:29:26.420 And it turns out she wasn't just any kind stranger, any kind stranger who offered water for him and the camels. 00:29:26.420 --> 00:29:30.220 Turns out she was actually Abraham's grandniece. 00:29:30.720 --> 00:29:35.160 She was the distant relative that Abraham had sent him to find. of all these variables even before the servant opened his mouth. 00:30:50.159 --> 00:30:53.199 It's just like what Jesus said in Matthew 6. 00:30:53.500 --> 00:30:57.139 Your father knows what you need before you even ask him. 00:30:59.039 --> 00:31:05.480 As John Piper said once, God is always doing 10,000 things in your life. 00:31:05.480 --> 00:31:08.000 And you may be aware of three of them. 00:31:09.160 --> 00:31:10.539 That's the wisdom of God. 00:31:11.360 --> 00:31:14.860 He's probably orchestrating 10,000 different details in your life. 00:31:15.440 --> 00:31:18.720 But we only 00:32:48.000 --> 00:32:54.220 The lot is cast into the lap, but it's every decision is from the Lord. 00:32:55.059 --> 00:32:59.259 Every time someone throws a dice and it lands a certain way in Macau, 00:32:59.740 --> 00:33:04.079 even that is under the providence of God, under the sovereignty of God. 00:33:04.220 --> 00:33:09.039 Everything that happens, whether we label it coincidence or not, 00:33:09.039 --> 00:33:11.000 it is from God. 00:33:11.000 --> 00:33:13.119 It is from God, under his providence. 00:33:13.299 --> 00:33:15.799 And we can thank him and give the glory back to
