our thinking as Christians, 00:01:38.759 --> 00:01:40.079 whatever will be will be. 00:01:40.079 --> 00:01:45.400 And I think within that there's a great danger of theological imbalance in our thinking. 00:01:45.400 --> 00:01:52.679 I think sometimes we use that kind of philosophy to have an imbalanced understanding of who 00:01:52.679 --> 00:01:59.759 God is and who we are and our responsibility and our relationship with Him. 00:01:59.759 --> 00:02:01.079 We believe in God's sovereignty. 00:02:01.079 --> 00:02:02.680 I've prayed about that. 00:02:02.680 --> 00:02:07.039 We understand that, that God knows the end from the beginning, He's the sovereign King 00:02:07.039 --> 00:02:08.159 of Kings. 00:02:08.159 --> 00:02:15.599 But I think we can sometimes use that knowledge of God to excuse laziness or justify a kind 00:02:15.599 --> 00:02:22.439 of spiritual fatalism that, you know, well, whatever will be will be, you know, because 00:02:22.439 --> 00:02:24.359 God has ordained it. 00:02:24.359 --> 00:02:28.439 You know, that's not a biblical text, whatever will be will be. 00:02:28.439 --> 00:02:32.079 You don't find it anywhere in the Bible. 00:02:32.079 --> 00:02:36.759 Or you know, I'm not sure if this is a worldwide one but it's certainly a Scottish one which 00:02:36.759 --> 00:02:41.840 we hear sometimes is, what's for you will not pass by you. 00:02:41.840 --> 00:02:44.719 It's theological nonsense. 00:02:44.719 --> 00:02:49.639 But it has a half truth about it, even if it's God's will it will happen. 00:02:49.639 --> 00:02:54.719 Now that's true at one level but it's kind of a half truth. 00:02:54.719 --> 00:03:00.359 You know, if you're applying for a job or you want a new job and you see that you're 00:03:00.359 --> 00:03:06.120 dream job, you don't just sit back and say, well, if it's God's will it will happen. 00:03:06.120 --> 00:03:11.680 You may recognize the importance of God in it but you will apply. unspiritual. 00:03:39.159 --> 00:03:41.120 It's taking undue control of your life. 00:03:41.120 --> 00:03:47.039 It's not recognizing that every day is God's gift and in God's hands and we can't make prayer as an indisputable foundation for the positive planning we need to make in 00:04:31.560 --> 00:04:32.560 our lives. 00:04:32.560 --> 00:04:39.199 We need to be planning because we all do it, 00:06:21.479 --> 00:06:30.599 How can we best pray for that community which seems to be so defensive against any Christians 00:06:30.599 --> 00:06:34.559 and the gospel and yet their need like ours is just as great? 00:06:34.560 --> 00:06:41.879 Because I live with two fears, generally speaking, in my life and generally, I guess. 00:06:41.879 --> 00:06:44.480 First is that prayer is marginal for us. 00:06:44.480 --> 00:06:46.000 That's one of my great fears. 00:06:46.000 --> 00:06:53.439 It's not a priority that we pray sometimes superstitiously, almost in vague generalities, 00:06:53.439 --> 00:06:59.199 that it's not sacrificial either individually or it's not sacrificial as we live in community 00:06:59.199 --> 00:07:03.319 as a church, that prayer together doesn't really matter that much. 00:07:03.319 --> 00:07:10.839 Because it's our pathway, our daily pathway to God and it's absolutely our lifeblood. 00:07:10.839 --> 00:07:13.959 So that would be one concern that I have in my own life. 00:07:13.959 --> 00:07:17.279 John 15 says, you know, remain in me as I remain in you. 00:07:17.279 --> 00:07:18.959 No branch can bear fruit by itself. 00:07:18.959 --> 00:07:22.480 I am marginal. 00:07:42.879 --> 00:07:49.680 And my second fear in my own life and maybe generally is that the gospel is largely irrelevant 00:07:49.680 --> 00:07:52.639 to us beyond these walls. 00:07:52.639 --> 00:07:56.920 That as you leave here on a Sunday, that in your day to day life and in my day to day life 00:07:56.920 --> 00:08:03.600 and in our plans and in our future thoughts, the in Jesus Christ, not a living 00:08:41.360 --> 00:08:43.360 transformation in Him. 00:08:43.360 --> 00:08:46.960 So it's not real, is really what I'm saying. 00:08:46.960 --> 00:08:53.400 And planning and the gospel don't seem to go together because I'm just getting on with 00:08:53.400 --> 00:08:54.400 my life. 00:08:54.400 --> 00:08:56.000 So why do we make plans? 00:08:56.000 --> 00:09:00.240 Commit your work to the Lord and your plans will be established. 00:09:00.240 --> 00:09:03.240 Why do we make plans at all? 00:09:03.240 --> 00:09:09.440 Well, we make plans because God makes plans and we are made in His image. 00:09:09.440 --> 00:09:15.560 We reflect the character of God by many of the things we do say and think. 00:09:15.559 --> 00:09:17.159 And so He's a planning God. 00:09:17.159 --> 00:09:23.199 We know that the Bible is a clear revelation of God's purposes and God's plan. 00:09:23.199 --> 00:09:31.319 And so as Christians we have a biblical worldview, not just salvific view about salvation. 00:09:31.319 --> 00:09:37.119 We have a worldview about the environment, about the world that we live in, about society, 00:09:37.119 --> 00:09:39.399 about people, about community. 00:09:39.399 --> 00:09:45.279 It's based on, you know, when Cody was with us, it was one of his favorite phrases, creation, 00:09:45.279 --> 00:09:47.279 all redemption, renewal. 00:09:47.279 --> 00:09:55.199 It was that pattern that the Bible tells us who we are made by, where our identity comes 00:09:55.199 --> 00:10:00.399 from, how that identity has been lost because of sin, how it is renewed through Jesus Christ 00:10:00.399 --> 00:10:06.079 and His grace and love for us and His work on our behalf, and how that transforms us now 00:10:06.079 --> 00:10:10.519 and will transform the universe in which we live in the future. 00:10:10.519 --> 00:10:12.439 So God is our purpose. 00:10:12.440 --> 00:10:17.160 You know, Christ says that He had a plan from before the foundation of the world. 00:10:17.160 --> 00:10:20.640 He knows He has a purpose and a plan. 00:10:20.640 --> 00:10:26.280 Everything He does, nothing He does is random and meaningless and reactive. what they was, what we've got, we've got Adam, we've got Abraham and David, Solomon, 00:10:38.640 --> 00:10:40.840 Paul and the New Testament apostles. 00:10:40.840 --> 00:10:50.600 Their lives, evidence, thoughtful, responsible planning, independence on the living God. 00:10:50.600 --> 00:10:52.840 And God has plans not just for the world but for us. 00:10:52.840 --> 00:10:56.240 You know that great verse in Jeremiah, I know the plans I have for you, plans to do you 00:10:56.240 --> 00:11:00.320 good not to harm you, plans to give you a future and hope. 00:11:00.320 --> 00:11:06.800 This is the great God that we trust in, transcendent in that amazing knowledge of the universe 00:11:06.799 --> 00:11:13.599 and imminent, close in the personal individual plans He has for your life and my life. 00:11:13.599 --> 00:11:15.799 That's the kind of God we have. 00:11:15.799 --> 00:11:24.719 And the text, which is God's word, presumes that we live in a world that is a world governed worldview or not. 00:12:02.080 --> 00:12:06.920 Many people have a kind of meaningless plan, nihilistic. 00:12:06.920 --> 00:12:12.320 So they are planning, but they're planning into a vacuum of meaninglessness because they 00:12:12.320 --> 00:12:16.920 don't believe in any ultimate or bigger purpose in the world. 00:12:16.920 --> 00:12:19.400 I hope nobody here thinks like that. 00:12:19.400 --> 00:12:22.520 Very despairing. 00:12:22.520 --> 00:12:27.560 Many people drift with an unconscious plan, almost no plan, kind of aimless. 00:12:27.559 --> 00:12:33.359 But even the aimlessness is a We're just aimless. 00:12:48.279 --> 00:12:54.359 We believed, yep, we accepted Jesus, but well now we're just getting up in the morning and 00:12:54.359 --> 00:12:55.359 going to bed at night. 00:12:55.360 --> 00:13:01.080 We've got no plans really, spiritually, and God is not involved at that personal level 00:13:01.080 --> 00:13:02.080 in our lives. 00:13:02.080 --> 00:13:03.080 We're that you have in your life, maybe environmental or ethical, 00:14:05.879 --> 00:14:13.759 a member of extinction rebellion or green peace where you see humanity as sovereign and 00:14:13.759 --> 00:14:19.559 the need to control the world and the universe. 00:14:19.559 --> 00:14:24.239 These are up to us, very much thinking of many of our millennials. 00:14:24.239 --> 00:14:30.679 And there's good elements within that, within that individualistic, social and idealistic 00:14:30.679 --> 00:14:32.479 plans. 00:14:32.479 --> 00:14:38.639 But as believers in Christ, as those who are Christians and profess to be Christians today, 00:14:38.639 --> 00:14:44.279 if that is where you are in your life spiritually, what does it mean? 00:14:44.279 --> 00:14:49.720 What does life planning look like for the Christian? 00:14:49.720 --> 00:14:52.720 Commit your plans, your work to the Lord, your plans will be established. 00:14:52.720 --> 00:14:57.319 Well the Bible says, lots of things probably, I'll just mention one or two of them. 00:14:57.319 --> 00:15:05.000 First, planning for us as Christians should be transformational, okay? 00:15:05.000 --> 00:15:09.839 We should allow the gospel and Jesus Christ to influence what we think and how we plan, 00:15:09.840 --> 00:15:14.600 rather than the other way round. 00:15:14.600 --> 00:15:19.240 Romans 12, chapter 1, you know, do not be conformed to this world but be transformed by what? 00:15:19.240 --> 00:15:20.720 By the renewing of your mind. 00:15:20.720 --> 00:15:22.120 And that's what you do, the planning, isn't it? goals are a kind of dirty phrase. 00:16:48.439 --> 00:16:53.959 But it's easy for us spiritually to have no reflection, to have no measurement of whether 00:16:53.959 --> 00:16:57.919 we're growing spiritually because we've got no real purpose, we don't really know what 00:16:57.919 --> 00:16:59.120 we're doing. 00:16:59.120 --> 00:17:05.200 And we're just imbibing the philosophy of the world around us and living sometimes without 00:17:05.200 --> 00:17:08.720 God in our hearts and our lives and in our perspective. 00:17:08.720 --> 00:17:12.359 What does it look like to glorify God? know, if our Bible is closed, if the pathway to heaven is silent in prayer, if we're not 00:21:54.019 --> 00:21:58.119 learning and submitting to the living God, it's going to be very difficult for us we know and love Jesus and have given our lives to Him, then we roll over, we entrust, 00:24:17.039 --> 00:24:26.960 we push into His will and mind, our work and our plans. 00:24:26.960 --> Our Christian lives are really dull and dread filled and distant from Jesus. 00:24:44.320 --> 00:24:49.279 It's maybe because we don't know Him and we don't recognize what He's done and we're find that our lives and our thoughts and our plans are 00:25:29.920 --> 00:25:36.200 established, they're well-grounded because they link in with what God wants for us. 00:25:36.200 --> 00:25:37.200 That's really what He's saying. 00:25:37.200 --> 00:25:41.519 As you understand and know and trust God and commit to Him, then you'll know the kind 00:25:41.519 --> 00:25:45.480 of things to be asking
