over, not just for Irish men. 00:07:01.079 --> 00:07:08.699 Us men are slow to take on roles of leadership within the home, within marriages, within our 00:07:08.699 --> 00:07:11.519 communities, and within the church. 00:07:11.519 --> 00:07:17.039 And that's a serious problem because, look at chapter 3, verse 1. 00:07:17.040 --> 00:07:19.580 Here is a trustworthy saying. 00:07:19.580 --> 00:07:27.260 If anyone sets his heart on being an overseer, that's an elder or a leader in the church. 00:07:27.920 --> 00:07:35.700 If anyone sets his heart on being an overseer, he desires a noble like, let's define, first of all, what we mean by church and what we mean by leaders. 00:08:26.019 --> 00:08:28.420 First of all, let's look at what church is. 00:08:28.899 --> 00:08:30.839 Verse 14 of chapter 3. 00:08:30.839 --> 00:08:39.259 Timothy is, or Paul is writing to Timothy, who is a young leader within the life of the church. 00:08:39.519 --> 00:08:44.819 And, well, really, 1 Timothy and 2 Timothy is really all about that. 00:08:45.199 --> 00:08:47.399 But he says in verse 14 of chapter 3, 00:08:47.399 --> 00:08:52.120 Although I hope to come to you soon, I am writing you these disintegrate. 00:11:11.720 --> 00:11:12.919 It will be nothing. 00:11:12.919 --> 00:11:20.939 A pillar is not a foundation that's underground. 00:11:21.079 --> 00:11:22.959 A pillar is kind of up 00:11:32.519 Well, the gospel of Jesus is like our pillar. 00:11:32.919 --> 00:11:35.899 The church is to take that gospel and to make it known, 00:11:36.019 --> 00:11:39.799 to make it visible within the community and within the world. 00:11:39.799 --> 00:11:42.759 And if we're to take away the pillar of truth, 00:11:42.919 --> 00:11:44.679 to take away the gospel, 00:11:45.000 --> 00:11:47.539 then the church is never, ever going to grow. 00:11:48.500 --> 00:11:50.860 It's never going to be all that it's meant to be. 00:11:52.699 --> 00:11:56.799 So the church is about God's instrument on is. 00:12:15.600 --> 00:12:18.899 And this church needs leaders. 00:12:19.939 --> 00:12:21.339 So what are the leaders? 00:12:21.500 --> 00:12:22.620 Well, look at verse 17. 00:12:22.740 --> 00:12:27.000 We get a definition there of chapter 5, verse 17. 00:12:27.860 --> 00:12:31.899 The elders who direct the affairs of the church well 00:12:31.899 --> 00:12:33.519 are worthy of double 00:15:08.500 is changed by the gospel verse 2 now we're in chapter 3 here chapter 3 verse 2 00:15:08.500 --> 00:15:16.120 now the overseer the elder must be above reproach that does not mean perfection 00:15:16.120 --> 00:15:24.759 it simply means a character that has been changed by the gospel and is evident to everybody else in 00:15:24.759 --> 00:15:32.919 other words there is nothing within their life that you would pinpoint and say that disqualifies them 00:15:32.919 --> 00:15:39.559 from leading so what does this changed character look like well we've got a big list here let's go 00:15:39.559 --> 00:15:47.059 through it one by one verse 2 they are to be the husband of but one wife you don't have to be 00:15:47.059 --> 00:15:54.360 married to be an elder but if you are you can only have one wife well all men can only have one wife 00:15:54.360 --> 00:16:01.240 which implies they are to care for their wives practically and they are to love their wives 00:16:01.240 --> 00:16:08.259 sacrificially part of their leadership is as we'll see in the coming weeks is is lived out even within 00:16:08.259 --> 00:16:18.539 home and family life the husband of but one wife they are to be temperate self-controlled and respectable 00:16:18.539 --> 00:16:27.019 that means they don't have a short fuse or they're prone to react to people out of hand or speak 00:16:27.019 --> 00:16:34.279 disrespectfully to others when you're with these kind of people you're not worried or afraid that 00:16:34.279 --> 00:16:37.159 they're suddenly going to blow their top and get really annoyed with you 00:16:37.159 --> 00:16:47.919 let's read on they are to be hospitable they're to be the kind of people that opens up their home 00:16:47.919 --> 00:16:56.399 welcomes people regardless of their race religion or culture they're not a hermit where they like to 00:16:56.399 --> 00:17:03.899 be kind of kept by themselves a recluse where nobody can get near them they're warm and relational 00:17:03.899 --> 00:17:09.200 they're people orientated in fact they love to be with people they're hospitable 00:17:09.200 --> 00:17:19.819 read on they're able to teach we'll come
