in houses. 00:00:48.480 --> 00:00:49.260 Tragic deaths. 00:00:50.160 --> 00:00:51.079 Heroic deaths. 00:00:51.939 --> 00:00:52.880 Deserved deaths. 00:00:53.060 --> 00:00:53.740 Executions. 00:00:53.740 --> 00:00:57.679 The electric chair, the gallows, lethal injection. 00:00:57.900 --> 00:01:01.219 Even thousands of crucifixions in the past two millennia. 00:01:02.320 --> 00:01:04.799 66 billion deaths. 00:01:05.620 --> 00:01:07.159 But one thing unites them all. 00:01:08.020 --> 00:01:11.659 They are all, ultimately, just deaths. 00:01:13.020 --> 00:01:14.480 Life coming to an end. 00:01:15.400 --> 00:01:19.219 And they may leave behind memories or grief or a legacy. 00:01:19.219 --> 00:01:23.019 But still, they are all life just coming to an end. 00:01:23.980 --> 00:01:25.480 No mistake about it. 00:01:26.620 --> 00:01:29.980 And to deal with the grief, we try our hardest to move on. 00:01:30.280 --> 00:01:34.659 And as the centuries go by, the world does just keep moving on. 00:01:34.659 --> 00:01:39.340 But I say one thing unites them all. 00:01:39.340 --> 00:01:43.719 But really, we should say, all except one. 00:01:45.140 --> 00:01:51.199 One death of the 66 billion is not actually just a death. 00:01:51.200 --> 00:01:54.060 One, unlike any other. 00:01:54.060 --> 00:02:00.299 One with a meaning and significance and impact on you and me, unlike any other. 00:02:01.460 --> 00:02:05.219 A death the world cannot just move on from. 00:02:06.560 --> 00:02:09.319 And it is the death we are witnessing here in Mark today. 00:02:09.319 --> 00:02:18.400 But if you were there on the roadside, as Jesus hung on that cross, you could be very tempted to think, 00:02:18.639 --> 00:02:20.659 this is like every other death. 00:02:21.639 --> 00:02:27.139 In the middle of two criminals, you could be mistaken to think, his death is just like theirs. 00:02:28.120 --> 00:02:31.500 And just like the thousands of other crucifixions of the past. 00:02:31.639 --> 00:02:33.479 And just like the other 66 billion. 00:02:34.979 --> 00:02:38.099 And in fact, that mistake is being made here in Mark. 00:02:38.099 --> 00:02:43.919 We saw last week the passers-by and the priests thought this was a death like any other. 00:02:44.539 --> 00:02:47.259 In fact, a forgettable, laughable death. 00:02:48.319 --> 00:02:51.400 And the bystanders in our passage today make a mistake. 00:02:52.319 --> 00:02:55.599 They hear Jesus crying to God, but they mishear him. 00:02:56.400 --> 00:02:57.879 They think he's calling Elijah. 00:02:59.280 --> 00:03:04.939 It is possible to mistake what's going on here in the death of Christ. 00:03:04.939 --> 00:03:09.460 And to think it is a death like any other. 00:03:10.659 --> 00:03:13.800 But to do so would be the greatest mistake of your life. 00:03:15.159 --> 00:03:19.400 In fact, you might be here today, and you know this person called Jesus died. 00:03:19.500 --> 00:03:20.840 You know it involved a cross. 00:03:21.099 --> 00:03:23.419 And you know Christians care about it. 00:03:23.780 --> 00:03:26.719 But to you, it may just be a death. 00:03:26.719 --> 00:03:30.000 Something you can just move on from. 00:03:31.580 --> 00:03:38.599 Well, Mark has written these words today to make it very clear without mistake that this is a death unlike any other. 00:03:39.740 --> 00:03:42.479 And you must not move on from it. 00:03:43.780 --> 00:03:50.340 Because in this passage here, we see God's perspective of what is happening on the cross. 00:03:50.340 --> 00:03:55.960 Two supernatural, divine events appear in this passage. 00:03:56.360 --> 00:03:58.780 The darkness that falls upon the land. 00:03:59.439 --> 00:04:02.539 And the tearing of the curtain at the moment of Jesus' death. 00:04:04.000 --> 00:04:09.580 And in these two divine events, we see God's perspective on the cross. 00:04:09.900 --> 00:04:11.140 Not what it means to me. 00:04:11.560 --> 00:04:13.319 Not what it means to the onlookers. 00:04:13.480 --> 00:04:15.539 But what it means to God. 00:04:15.539 --> 00:04:19.659 And we can make mistakes, but God cannot. 00:04:21.300 --> 00:04:24.579 And so God is doing something in creation. 00:04:25.560 --> 00:04:29.300 Supernaturally shaping these events to clear up the mistakes. 00:04:29.459 --> 00:04:32.439 And to show us why this is a death unlike any other. 00:04:33.459 --> 00:04:36.060 Why we must not be mistaken about this. 00:04:36.159 --> 00:04:40.980 And why the world, why you, cannot just move on from this death. 00:04:40.980 --> 00:04:46.000 But rather, this today. 00:05:14.519 --> 00:05:16.780 The darkness and the curtain. 00:05:18.060 --> 00:05:21.579 And we will see what God says about this death. 00:05:23.100 --> 00:05:24.819 And so the first thing is this, the darkness. 00:05:25.560 --> 00:05:26.540 Let's look at the darkness. 00:05:28.600 --> 00:05:31.600 Jesus has been hanging on the cross for about three hours now. 00:05:32.500 --> 00:05:33.660 And look back to verse 25. 00:05:34.860 --> 00:05:37.860 It was the third hour, 9 a.m., when they crucified him. 00:05:37.860 --> 00:05:41.900 And now in verse 33, we're in the sixth hour. 00:05:42.500 --> 00:05:43.840 Twelve o'clock, midday. 00:05:44.720 --> 00:05:46.060 Just outside Jerusalem. 00:05:46.960 --> 00:05:50.280 Three hours of Jesus hanging in the hot sun. 00:05:51.080 --> 00:05:53.379 His flesh pulling on those nails. 00:05:54.020 --> 00:05:56.120 And blood dripping onto the dry dust. 00:05:56.120 --> 00:06:03.959 But as the clock strikes 12, what is the one thing you would expect at midday in the Middle East? 00:06:05.079 --> 00:06:05.639 Sun. 00:06:06.639 --> 00:06:09.060 Hot sun, high in the sky. 00:06:09.060 --> 00:06:13.180 For what happens here, the clock strikes 12. 00:06:13.680 --> 00:06:19.839 And verse 33, there was darkness over the whole land until the ninth hour. 00:06:19.839 --> 00:06:24.619 Now, this is not talking about a solar eclipse. 00:06:25.419 --> 00:06:28.159 This is not talking about just being overcast. 00:06:28.779 --> 00:06:36.159 No, this is talking about a sudden, supernatural pitch blackness across the land for three hours. 00:06:37.799 --> 00:06:39.559 We're about to approach midday soon. 00:06:39.560 --> 00:06:45.060 It would be like right now, the sun turns off like a light switch. 00:06:45.899 --> 00:06:47.519 Your eyes dilate. 00:06:48.540 --> 00:06:52.720 And London is submerged into a winter night until 3 p.m. 00:06:54.100 --> 00:06:55.319 Well, that's Jerusalem here. 00:06:56.660 --> 00:07:00.680 As Jesus hangs there, God shuts off the sun's rays. 00:07:00.680 --> 00:07:05.400 And this cross and this land is plunged into darkness. 00:07:05.560 --> 00:07:06.740 No warmth in your skin. 00:07:07.120 --> 00:07:08.400 No light in your eyes. 00:07:08.519 --> 00:07:13.879 And without electricity, there really was darkness over the whole land. 00:07:15.660 --> 00:07:21.720 And whenever God acts in creation like this, he does so to communicate something to us. 00:07:22.519 --> 00:07:28.300 It is like a cosmic sign telling us something about what is going on in this moment. 00:07:28.300 --> 00:07:33.520 And darkness in the Bible has a very significant meaning. 00:07:34.100 --> 00:07:36.699 Darkness represents two things. 00:07:38.180 --> 00:07:42.120 Firstly, darkness represents evil, sin. 00:07:43.379 --> 00:07:48.620 The Bible speaks of our sinful actions as being deeds of darkness. 00:07:49.980 --> 00:07:56.480 And in sin, we walk in darkness with darkened minds and belonging to the kingdom of darkness. 00:07:56.480 --> 00:08:00.360 Darkness means sin and evil. 00:08:01.439 --> 00:08:03.540 And we even use that imagery, don't we? 00:08:04.420 --> 00:08:08.740 When a great evil happens in our country, think of the Southport attacks. 00:08:09.680 --> 00:08:13.400 When that happens, we say, today is a very dark day. 00:08:14.600 --> 00:08:17.420 We know something evil is present. 00:08:17.420 --> 00:08:28.199 Well, in this darkness, God is indicating in the heavens itself, there is an intense presence of evil and sin in this moment. 00:08:29.879 --> 00:08:33.600 And as well as that, darkness means another thing. 00:08:34.960 --> 00:08:39.899 Darkness represents God's anger, his wrath, his judgment. 00:08:39.899 --> 00:08:47.659 Think of the Exodus, when there was darkness over Egypt as it faces the plagues of judgment. 00:08:49.019 --> 00:08:51.159 And think of how Jesus describes hell. 00:08:52.240 --> 00:08:54.620 He calls it the outer darkness. 00:08:54.620 --> 00:08:54.820 Darkness. 00:08:56.500 --> 00:09:03.019 Which makes sense because light, light is to do with comfort and joy, isn't it? 00:09:03.539 --> 00:09:04.840 What lifts your spirit? 00:09:05.720 --> 00:09:07.019 It's a warm summer's day. 00:09:08.620 --> 00:09:12.500 Light is life and comfort and joy. 00:09:12.840 --> 00:09:15.240 And in particular, light is God's goodness. 00:09:16.560 --> 00:09:18.539 Think of the benediction we hear every Sunday. 00:09:18.740 --> 00:09:21.659 God's favor shines upon us. 00:09:21.659 --> 00:09:26.559 And so darkness is the complete opposite. 00:09:27.879 --> 00:09:32.659 It is the shutting off of joy and happiness and comfort. 00:09:33.120 --> 00:09:36.819 And instead, it's the presence of God's wrath. 00:09:38.439 --> 00:09:45.959 So in this supernatural darkness over this cross, God is revealing to the world something is present at Golgotha. 00:09:45.960 --> 00:09:52.440 God's holy anger is intensely present in this moment. 00:09:52.440 --> 00:09:58.720 And these two meanings, sin and wrath, they always go together. 00:09:59.260 --> 00:10:01.760 Like two magnets stuck together. 00:10:02.980 --> 00:10:07.040 Because the darkness of sin always brings the darkness of God's anger. 00:10:08.140 --> 00:10:10.780 Where there is human evil, there is divine wrath. 00:10:10.920 --> 00:10:12.860 You cannot separate 00:10:33.399 Ever since Adam ate that fruit, though the sun still shone, this darkness has filled the earth. 00:10:34.539 --> 00:10:37.500 This darkness was over Adam and Eve. 00:10:38.240 --> 00:10:40.059 It was over Cain and Abel. 00:10:40.159 --> 00:10:44.240 It was over the nations as they grew and spread across this planet. 00:10:45.679 --> 00:10:47.639 And it's everywhere today. 00:10:47.639 --> 00:10:53.360 This darkness is over this country right now. 00:10:54.340 --> 00:10:56.000 It's over this city. 00:10:56.819 --> 00:10:59.519 It's over homes and in bedrooms. 00:11:00.240 --> 00:11:02.179 It hangs over those parades. 00:11:02.340 --> 00:11:04.080 It sits over the mosques. 00:11:04.799 --> 00:11:09.039 It's there over phones and laptops, cafes and boardrooms. 00:11:09.299 --> 00:11:10.580 The darkness is everywhere. 00:11:11.860 --> 00:11:17.379 The wrath of God looms over all ungodliness in this world. 00:11:18.259 --> 00:11:20.740 Where there is sin, there is God's wrath. 00:11:21.840 --> 00:11:27.939 And it is an unbearable weight hanging over a world turned from God. 00:11:28.600 --> 00:11:31.919 It is an infinite debt that none of us can repay. 00:11:32.059 --> 00:11:33.860 A guilt none of us can erase. 00:11:35.299 --> 00:11:38.639 But the scary thing is, we don't see it. 00:11:38.639 --> 00:11:44.039 We go about living our lives thinking everything is as bright as day. 00:11:44.740 --> 00:11:47.699 No God, no darkness, no consequences. 00:11:48.100 --> 00:11:50.899 And we go about our lives thinking everything is fine. 00:11:50.899 --> 00:11:56.959 We make the mistake thinking it's not there, but a darkness looms. 00:11:56.960 --> 00:12:05.040 And in this moment, as Jesus hangs on the cross, God knows that we don't see the darkness. 00:12:05.500 --> 00:12:12.040 And so he shuts off the sun to show us this darkness really does exist. 00:12:12.039 --> 00:12:18.279 And the darkness is intensely present in this moment at this cross. 00:12:18.279 --> 00:12:27.679 It is like God is saying, I need to shut off the light from a star just to show you what this cross really means. 00:12:27.679 --> 00:12:37.379 And so though the sky is black, this moment is actually blazing hot with the fury of God. 00:12:37.379 --> 00:12:44.659 Yet this darkness is hanging over the purest of all people. 00:12:45.779 --> 00:12:48.240 A man who has no sin. 00:12:49.100 --> 00:12:53.240 A man for whom evil has never even crossed his mind. 00:12:54.299 --> 00:12:57.939 The man in whom God is well pleased. 00:12:58.919 --> 00:13:02.639 The man who is filled with light and joy. 00:13:02.639 --> 00:13:08.960 Yet the darkness of sin and wrath hangs above him of all people. 00:13:09.840 --> 00:13:10.159 Why? 00:13:11.919 --> 00:13:15.100 Well, God is showing us what this moment really means. 00:13:15.860 --> 00:13:18.819 Why this is a death unlike any other. 00:13:19.279 --> 00:13:26.259 It is because as Jesus hangs on that cross, it is not his own darkness that he bears. 00:13:26.899 --> 00:13:29.700 But he bears the darkness of sinners. 00:13:29.700 --> 00:13:39.400 There is the darkness of sin in the air because on this cross, this man is becoming sin for us. 00:13:40.680 --> 00:13:45.860 The pure Lord of glory is being treated as a sinner. 00:13:46.660 --> 00:13:52.759 He is bearing the darkness of sin in his body on that tree. 00:13:53.960 --> 00:13:58.040 And God is striking him with the fury of his wrath upon sin. 00:13:58.039 --> 00:14:00.819 But it is not his own sin. bank accounts and see every thought and word and action that we have ever done, 00:14:29.879 --> 00:14:32.539 all written with the ink of darkness. 00:14:32.539 --> 00:14:34.860 Every sin. 00:14:35.699 --> 00:14:36.980 Every outburst. 00:14:37.939 --> 00:14:38.879 Every click. 00:14:39.480 --> 00:14:40.399 Every kiss. 00:14:41.000 --> 00:14:41.860 Every lie. 00:14:42.919 --> 00:14:49.240 Everything from our grumbling this morning down to the unspeakable things we don't even dare to think about. 00:14:49.240 --> 00:14:52.019 All of that in our account. 00:14:52.019 --> 00:15:03.440 It is like as the clock strikes 12 in Jerusalem, the lights go out and your account is drained and emptied and funneled all into Christ's account. 00:15:03.440 --> 00:15:08.880 All the darkness of our life landing on him. 00:15:10.360 --> 00:15:15.280 You can't even imagine the horrors and the filth being put to his holy name. 00:15:17.260 --> 00:15:25.460 Yet in this moment, God is declaring in the darkness, this man is bearing your sin. 00:15:25.460 --> 00:15:32.100 And Jesus continues to hang there because he knows we are not able to bear it. 00:15:33.240 --> 00:15:35.980 And the only way to save sin is to save you. 00:15:36.280 --> 00:15:38.639 It is to take the darkness off us. 00:15:39.280 --> 00:15:43.500 And place the unbearable weight of our debt onto his shoulders. 00:15:45.740 --> 00:15:48.500 Which means not only the darkness of sin, 00:15:49.500 --> 00:15:53.680 but the darkness of God's wrath is falling upon this man. 00:15:55.460 --> 00:15:57.480 In this moment, as he hangs there, 00:15:57.860 --> 00:16:03.240 the full sting of sin's curse is piercing him right now. 00:16:04.320 --> 00:16:08.400 So if in the mockery, Christ was tasting hell for us, the ninth hour, Jesus cried with a loud voice, 00:16:24.819 --> 00:16:27.299 Eloi, Eloi, lema sabachthani. 00:16:27.799 --> 00:16:32.279 Which means, my God, my God, why have you forsaken me? 00:16:34.759 --> 00:16:36.759 As the darkness comes to an end, 00:16:37.679 --> 00:16:39.360 we finally hear Jesus speak. 00:16:40.340 --> 00:16:43.960 And we get an insight into how he feels right now. 00:16:43.960 --> 00:16:46.120 And what does he say? 00:16:46.340 --> 00:16:47.780 It's a quote from Psalm 22. 00:16:49.040 --> 00:16:50.500 He cries to God, 00:16:51.500 --> 00:16:53.440 why have you forsaken me? 00:16:54.960 --> 00:16:57.280 This is what it feels like 00:16:57.280 --> 00:16:59.680 to bear the darkness of our sin 00:16:59.680 --> 00:17:01.759 and the darkness of God's wrath. 00:17:02.780 --> 00:17:03.420 Forsaken. 00:17:04.840 --> 00:17:05.680 Cut off. 00:17:06.759 --> 00:17:07.380 Shut off. 00:17:07.380 --> 00:17:12.140 Now, we need to be careful with these words here. 00:17:13.660 --> 00:17:15.160 We mustn't be mistaken. 00:17:16.080 --> 00:17:17.140 Look at verse 35. 00:17:18.660 --> 00:17:21.520 Jesus says, Eloi, in Aramaic, 00:17:21.600 --> 00:17:22.740 which means, my God. 00:17:23.800 --> 00:17:26.500 But people mistakenly think he says, 00:17:26.740 --> 00:17:28.580 Eli, meaning Elijah. 00:17:30.040 --> 00:17:31.600 And like these people, 00:17:31.600 --> 00:17:33.960 I don't want us to be mistaken 00:17:33.960 --> 00:17:36.180 about what Jesus is saying here. 00:17:36.180 --> 00:17:39.420 We must not make the mistake 00:17:39.420 --> 00:17:40.820 of thinking, 00:17:41.360 --> 00:17:42.880 this is the Trinity breaking. 00:17:43.299 --> 00:17:45.000 This is not the Trinity breaking. 00:17:45.100 --> 00:17:45.840 That is impossible. 00:17:47.400 God. 00:17:55.420 --> 00:17:57.060 God is still his God. 00:17:58.560 --> 00:18:00.240 No, what is going on here 00:18:00.240 --> 00:18:01.759 is that Jesus, 00:18:02.100 --> 00:18:03.720 in his human soul, 00:18:03.720 --> 00:18:06.200 he is experiencing 00:18:06.200 --> 00:18:06.960 the full weight 00:18:06.960 --> 00:18:08.240 of this darkness. 00:18:09.779 --> 00:18:11.740 God is shutting off 00:18:11.740 --> 00:18:13.240 the light of his goodness 00:18:13.240 --> 00:18:15.660 and comfort and grace, 00:18:16.079 --> 00:18:17.980 shutting all of that off from Jesus 00:18:17.980 --> 00:18:20.680 so that Jesus only feels 00:18:20.680 --> 00:18:23.160 the weight of darkness in his soul. 00:18:24.299 --> 00:18:25.920 He feels utterly forsaken. 00:18:25.920 --> 00:18:28.940 It is a
