But we find ourselves in denialism. 00:01:11.599 --> 00:01:17.179 Trying to avoid, the aim of that is to avoid the awkward, painful truth. 00:01:18.179 --> 00:01:19.900 We've just messed up really badly. 00:01:21.480 --> 00:01:23.359 But denialism is right through society. 00:01:23.459 --> 00:01:24.259 It happens at bigger pictures. 00:01:24.260 --> 00:01:27.760 So denialism we often find associated with self-interest. 00:01:29.719 --> 00:01:40.260 So for example, those who are climate change denialists are often those directly connected to the coal, gas, or timber industries. 00:01:40.260 --> 00:01:46.480 And so you can see that denialism is driven by perhaps a fear of losing money or power. 00:01:48.140 --> 00:01:54.160 Denialism at a big picture is also driven by issues of personal validation and identity. 00:01:54.159 --> 00:02:05.859 So at a big picture level, those who deny the Holocaust are often ultra-right-wing neo-Nazi types. 00:02:07.560 --> 00:02:09.780 It would threaten their whole reason for existence. 00:02:10.240 --> 00:02:14.439 Or again, closer to home, research shows this sort of thing for men. 00:02:14.960 --> 00:02:21.300 The research shows that men apparently don't change lines when they're in the supermarket waiting for the checkout. 00:02:21.300 --> 00:02:28.180 They'll observe one line perhaps going faster than their line, but they'll not change. 00:02:28.260 --> 00:02:29.320 Whereas women will apparently. 00:02:30.040 --> 00:02:30.480 Why not? 00:02:31.360 --> 00:02:32.360 Well, it's denialism. 00:02:32.480 --> 00:02:37.680 Because men in changing lines would have to admit to themselves they'd pick the wrong line to start with. 00:02:40.360 --> 00:02:43.020 It's a funny example, but it's denialism. 00:02:43.100 --> 00:02:44.280 How powerful it can be. 00:02:46.680 --> 00:02:50.040 Friends, I want to use that word to move us into the passage this morning. 00:02:50.039 --> 00:02:54.219 Denialism is a common response to Jesus. 00:02:57.840 --> 00:03:00.979 And we see that very much in this passage before this morning. 00:03:01.680 --> 00:03:05.079 So we're opening at chapter 6, verse 6 to 71. 00:03:05.579 --> 00:03:07.259 Let me recap the last three weeks. 00:03:07.359 --> 00:03:10.719 We've been working on this chapter 6 for three weeks now. 00:03:10.799 --> 00:03:11.500 Four weeks, actually. 00:03:11.500 --> 00:03:27.979 And back at the start, in the miracle of the feeding, Jesus demonstrates clearly his ability to provide, provide miraculously for the physical needs of his people by feeding a crowd in excess of 5,000 from a little boy's lunchbox. 00:03:27.979 --> 00:03:40.620 In response, the people love the immediate practical benefits that they can see coming from Jesus as a result of that miracle. 00:03:40.620 --> 00:03:45.159 And they're convinced that he's the great deliverer they had been waiting for. 00:03:45.379 --> 00:03:49.039 The new Moses who would implement their agenda for salvation. 00:03:49.659 --> 00:03:55.300 Who would free them from the Romans and establish Israel once again as the dominant nation in the world. 00:03:55.300 --> 00:04:04.620 But Jesus pushes them to think in deeper spiritual categories of the heart. 00:04:05.620 --> 00:04:17.560 He pushes them to understand that in their innermost being, they have a hunger, a deep spiritual hunger for life and satisfaction that only he can satisfy. 00:04:17.560 --> 00:04:27.300 And that he will satisfy as they come to him, as they see him like the essential ingredient of life, like bread and water. 00:04:28.100 --> 00:04:33.500 And as they come and feed on him with an urgency and a passion and a confidence. 00:04:35.340 --> 00:04:39.639 He says to them, look, I'm far, far better than physical manna. 00:04:40.500 --> 00:04:46.840 You look to physical manna, he says to the Jews, you look to physical manna as the gold standard of God's provision for his people. 00:04:46.839 --> 00:04:51.379 Well, let me tell you, I'm far, far better than anything manna could offer you. 00:04:51.799 --> 00:04:53.359 I'll give you better satisfaction. 00:04:53.739 --> 00:04:55.539 I'll give you salvation that lasts. 00:04:55.879 --> 00:04:57.379 I'll give you life eternal. 00:04:58.259 --> 00:05:02.979 I'm God's gift of bread from heaven, says Jesus. 00:05:03.479 --> 00:05:08.319 Sent to give real, spiritual, satisfied, eternal life. 00:05:10.519 --> 00:05:15.699 Now, when we hear that sort of stuff, we think, what's not to like about that? 00:05:16.839 --> 00:05:19.779 What's not to like about what Jesus offers? 00:05:22.679 --> 00:05:26.299 Satisfaction of deep hunger and thirst, which we all know is there. 00:05:26.799 --> 00:05:32.060 It drives us to cravings of all sorts as we seek to satisfy it. 00:05:33.579 --> 00:05:38.139 What's not to like about a guarantee of life and everlasting, never ending? 00:05:38.139 --> 00:05:43.319 What's not to like about the promise of intimate, guilt-free relationship with God? 00:05:45.259 --> 00:05:49.039 Which in our innermost being we sense we're meant to enjoy. 00:05:50.819 --> 00:05:52.879 What's not to like about that? 00:05:54.459 --> 00:05:57.180 Who wouldn't want this from Jesus? 00:05:57.180 --> 00:06:04.400 Well, lots, apparently. 00:06:08.280 --> 00:06:12.319 The actual response in verse 60 through to 71? 00:06:14.379 --> 00:06:20.300 Large numbers hear all of that and walk away from Jesus. 00:06:20.300 --> 00:06:28.379 Large numbers walk away from Jesus. 00:06:30.040 --> 00:06:31.340 And the context is important here. 00:06:32.580 --> 00:06:38.319 These verses actually represent the end of Jesus' public ministry in Galilee. 00:06:39.840 --> 00:06:40.600 And guess what? 00:06:40.600 --> 00:06:48.300 But it ends in hostility and rejection, as did his ministry in Judea, 00:06:48.520 --> 00:06:50.840 if you track back to the end of chapter 3 and chapter 4. 00:06:54.600 --> 00:06:56.640 But there's something different about this rejection. 00:06:57.680 --> 00:06:59.980 It's much more personally confronting. 00:07:01.580 --> 00:07:09.960 Because this rejection comes after an extended period of very clear teaching and offer by Jesus. 00:07:10.600 --> 00:07:15.700 And it comes from those, verse 60, those who are called disciples. 00:07:18.920 --> 00:07:25.760 And I take it that means a reference to those in the group who apparently had actually given up their jobs, 00:07:26.400 --> 00:07:31.500 full of such excitement and anticipation of Jesus' deliverer and saviour and king, 00:07:32.060 --> 00:07:34.120 and what he was going to do with them and for them. 00:07:34.740 --> 00:07:39.120 They'd given up their jobs and they were actually following him around for a period of time. 00:07:39.120 --> 00:07:49.220 Now, they come to a conclusion about Jesus that makes them pack up their swags and go back home. 00:07:54.639 --> 00:07:57.840 Mass defection came from where? 00:07:59.100 --> 00:08:04.060 Well, it came from excitement, giving way to outrage. 00:08:04.060 --> 00:08:06.339 If you look at verse 60 and 61. 00:08:06.879 --> 00:08:10.879 When many of his disciples heard it, they said, this is a hard. 00:08:10.920 --> 00:08:13.620 The word there is actually outrageous or offensive. 00:08:14.519 --> 00:08:16.199 It's a very, very strong word. 00:08:17.399 --> 00:08:20.220 This is outrageously offensive. 00:08:21.759 --> 00:08:25.980 So much so, it says, not that we can accept it, but who can even listen to it? 00:08:25.980 --> 00:08:32.440 It's the picture of them closing their ears, covering their ears, saying, this is so outrageously offensive to us. 00:08:33.060 --> 00:08:38.560 We can't even bear to listen to the guy anymore, let alone respond to him positively. 00:08:38.559 --> 00:08:45.459 And so the grumbling, as mentioned there in verse 61. 00:08:46.019 --> 00:08:49.099 We saw that last week and talked about it a fair bit last week. 00:08:49.559 --> 00:08:55.559 The grumbling, that sort of simmering, gut-dwelling hostility, now erupts. 00:09:00.839 --> 00:09:05.699 Overflows into outrage and offence at both Jesus and his teaching. 00:09:05.700 --> 00:09:09.180 Jesus' response, verse 62. 00:09:11.720 --> 00:09:14.800 Seems not the way to win friends and influence people. 00:09:14.940 --> 00:09:16.440 He hasn't obviously been to the right courses. 00:09:17.020 --> 00:09:17.879 What does Jesus do? 00:09:18.340 --> 00:09:20.259 He promises them more offence. 00:09:20.620 --> 00:09:21.520 Think that offends you? 00:09:21.900 --> 00:09:23.660 Well, says Jesus, listen up. 00:09:24.320 --> 00:09:25.400 Look out for what's ahead. 00:09:27.180 --> 00:09:33.600 Now, it's not exactly clear what verse 62 refers to, except that it's the source of even greater offence. 00:09:33.600 --> 00:09:39.920 Most likely, I think it's a reference to his approaching death, resurrection, and ascension, 00:09:40.100 --> 00:09:43.519 because that's the pathway to him being king and savior. 00:09:46.060 --> 00:09:52.659 And that was even more offensive to the Jews, that Messiah should actually be killed. 00:09:52.659 --> 00:10:02.139 And so, verse 66. 00:10:03.659 --> 00:10:09.459 After this, many of his disciples turned back and no longer walked with him. 00:10:09.460 --> 00:10:20.720 They became so angry, so disillusioned, so disappointed with what they had heard from the lips of Jesus, 00:10:20.920 --> 00:10:24.080 given what they expected to hear from the lips of Jesus, 00:10:25.460 --> 00:10:27.259 that they just said, this is rubbish. 00:10:28.440 --> 00:10:29.240 We're out of here. 00:10:29.240 --> 00:10:39.980 So the decision to walk away from Jesus, as we've seen right through each week as we've been looking at chapter 6, 00:10:40.039 --> 00:10:41.580 is a very knowing decision. 00:10:44.120 --> 00:10:48.799 And Jesus identifies the trip point for their outrage and exposes it in verse 63. 00:10:48.799 --> 00:10:53.079 It is the spirit who gives life, says Jesus. 00:10:54.240 --> 00:11:01.979 The flesh or human agency or human means, human ability, is of no avail. 00:11:02.419 --> 00:11:06.240 The words that I have spoken to you are spirit and life. 00:11:08.000 --> 00:11:10.059 But there are some among you who do not believe. 00:11:10.059 --> 00:11:18.519 And so, the cause of walking away from Jesus, when you drill down through the outrage, 00:11:19.059 --> 00:11:20.379 is laid open before them. 00:11:23.319 --> 00:11:24.539 There's no wriggle room. 00:11:25.319 --> 00:11:26.759 Yes, they're walking away from Jesus, 00:11:27.279 --> 00:11:31.539 but Jesus wants them to understand why they're walking away from him. 00:11:33.219 --> 00:11:34.779 It's a clash of agendas. 00:11:35.099 --> 00:11:37.319 I talked about that last week and the week before. 00:11:37.320 --> 00:11:43.080 So the crowd were happy to accept Jesus as God's Savior and King, 00:11:43.180 --> 00:11:44.960 as long as he worked to their agenda, 00:11:45.100 --> 00:11:47.820 what God's Savior and King would look like and what he would do. 00:11:49.720 --> 00:11:53.379 But when they realized that Jesus was pushing a very different agenda 00:11:53.379 --> 00:11:56.720 for him as God's Savior and King, 00:11:57.780 --> 00:11:59.860 they became outraged. 00:12:01.020 --> 00:12:02.600 This isn't what we signed up for. 00:12:03.100 --> 00:12:03.820 This is nonsense. 00:12:04.920 --> 00:12:05.740 So they walked away. 00:12:07.320 --> 00:12:09.980 And let me spell out again, as I've done in previous weeks. 00:12:10.300 --> 00:12:11.840 See, it comes down to this. 00:12:11.980 --> 00:12:12.940 According to Jesus, 00:12:13.520 --> 00:12:15.660 salvation or acceptance with God, 00:12:15.940 --> 00:12:18.760 relationship with him and enjoyment of the good life forever, 00:12:19.020 --> 00:12:20.960 is not an outside-in practice, 00:12:21.040 --> 00:12:22.440 as the Jews believed it to be. 00:12:24.000 --> 00:12:25.520 On the contrary, says Jesus, 00:12:25.879 --> 00:12:28.720 salvation is an inside-out work of God's Spirit. 00:12:29.580 --> 00:12:31.240 And it's inseparably tied 00:12:31.240 --> 00:12:34.540 to believing and accepting the words of Jesus. 00:12:34.539 --> 00:12:40.240 And so the two agendas part company. 00:12:43.839 --> 00:12:45.339 It was not, says Jesus, 00:12:45.759 --> 00:12:47.059 salvation was not, says Jesus, 00:12:47.120 --> 00:12:50.299 an entitlement that came to them because they were God's special people. 00:12:50.519 --> 00:12:54.079 It was not a process they could apply and control and work towards 00:12:54.079 --> 00:12:55.919 using their own physical resources. 00:12:56.319 --> 00:12:57.419 On the contrary, says Jesus, 00:12:57.819 --> 00:13:00.279 it was a spiritual gift, 00:13:00.279 --> 00:13:01.659 something he would give them, 00:13:02.500 --> 00:13:07.819 something that they could not and would not and did not merit for themselves. 00:13:08.179 --> 00:13:09.079 It was grace, 00:13:09.720 --> 00:13:10.959 not performance. 00:13:12.720 --> 00:13:14.740 And so the agendas part company. 00:13:14.740 --> 00:13:18.960 And God would not happily accept them, 00:13:19.039 --> 00:13:19.440 says Jesus, 00:13:19.580 --> 00:13:22.240 on the basis of your religious actions, 00:13:22.879 --> 00:13:26.080 sacrifices and prayers and tithing and keeping the law of Moses, 00:13:26.440 --> 00:13:28.539 observing religious festivals and celebrations. 00:13:29.120 --> 00:13:30.019 No, says Jesus, 00:13:30.899 --> 00:13:33.840 God will only accept you on the basis of my merit, 00:13:36.039 --> 00:13:38.620 which he identifies earlier as his death, 00:13:39.039 --> 00:13:40.419 foreshadows earlier as his death, 00:13:40.419 --> 00:13:45.000 for forgiveness and God's work of the spirit renewing them. 00:13:46.779 --> 00:13:48.360 And so the agendas part company. 00:13:53.159 -->
