00:01:56.620 And how the cross of Christ alone frees us from slavery to the flesh to live by the Spirit for the glory of God. 00:01:56.620 --> 00:02:02.079 So this morning's passage, which just read, Galatians 6, 11 through 18. 00:02:02.300 --> 00:02:06.359 What you need to understand here is that Paul is drawing this letter to a conclusion. 00:02:07.359 --> 00:02:09.840 And it culminates in a comparison. 00:02:10.780 --> 00:02:12.640 A comparison of boasts. 00:02:13.680 --> 00:02:14.719 Boasting in the flesh. 00:02:15.480 --> 00:02:16.640 Boasting in the cross. 00:02:16.639 --> 00:02:29.079 And this comparison between boasting is intended to call all of us to boast not in the flesh, but in the cross of Jesus Christ alone. 00:02:29.399 --> 00:02:32.059 So I can summarize this we're going to move forward in walking through this passage. 00:02:47.359 --> 00:02:49.680 I want to answer a general question first. 00:02:49.939 --> 00:02:52.939 What is this boasting that the Apostle Paul is talking about? 00:02:53.819 --> 00:02:58.780 And then I want to help us understand what is this boasting in the flesh that he's talking about? 00:02:59.400 --> 00:03:05.939 And then I want to land us in what is this boasting in the cross of our Lord Jesus Christ? 00:03:06.500 --> 00:03:10.979 And why we must boast in the cross alone. 00:03:10.979 --> 00:03:15.159 So what does Paul mean by boasting? 00:03:15.840 --> 00:03:16.879 Well, let me frame it for you. 00:03:17.039 --> 00:03:26.239 Because the verses 13 and 14 in which he actually talks about boasting, that's framed by what he says in verse 11 and verse 17. 00:03:26.699 --> 00:03:31.879 So let me help you show you where this boasting stuff comes in the context stuff. 00:03:32.839 --> 00:03:38.120 Notice in verse 11, Paul says, see with what large letters I'm writing to you with my own hand. 00:03:38.120 --> 00:03:41.740 There's some speculation on what these large letters are. 00:03:41.860 --> 00:03:45.340 Maybe it's because Paul, his eyesight wasn't the best. 00:03:46.000 --> 00:03:48.360 Maybe the ailment of Galatians 4.13. 00:03:48.759 --> 00:03:55.879 It could be the equivalent of us writing an email and putting something in bold italicized print to emphasize something. 00:03:55.879 --> 00:04:02.039 What the big clue is when he says, I write to you these things with my own hand. 00:04:03.240 --> 00:04:05.219 You know, each of us has our own handwriting. 00:04:05.359 --> 00:04:06.859 It's like our own fingerprint, right? 00:04:06.960 --> 00:04:08.199 It's unique to us. 00:04:09.180 --> 00:04:12.939 And so what Paul is saying here is saying, hey, this is me that's writing you. 00:04:13.500 --> 00:04:14.519 This letter's from me. 00:04:15.419 --> 00:04:18.259 The apostle Paul, the one called by God. 00:04:18.639 --> 00:04:19.819 Galatians 1 and 2. 00:04:19.819 --> 00:04:26.579 The apostle to the Gentiles, given the authority from the risen Christ. 00:04:27.259 --> 00:04:31.240 So it's an authenticator of who's writing this letter. 00:04:33.620 --> 00:04:36.939 And then in 6.17, we read this. 00:04:38.100 --> 00:04:40.199 From now on, let no one cause me trouble. 00:04:40.920 --> 00:04:42.779 He's writing this letter. 00:04:42.920 --> 00:04:45.819 It's going to be distributed to the churches in Galatia. 00:04:45.819 --> 00:04:50.000 And in these churches, this letter would have been read publicly. 00:04:50.459 --> 00:04:55.920 And so all those people who are giving him trouble, and what I mean by that is they're teaching a different gospel. 00:04:56.659 --> 00:05:02.120 They're saying that you can believe in Jesus just as long as if you're a guy, you're circumcised, 00:05:02.259 --> 00:05:08.680 and make sure you're observing the Jewish kosher dietary laws, making sure you're hitting all the Jewish holidays. 00:05:09.039 --> 00:05:13.420 So if you believe in Jesus and do all that stuff, you do those works, you're good with God. 00:05:13.420 --> 00:05:15.740 It's adding to the gospel. 00:05:16.300 --> 00:05:17.920 And it's not the gospel. 00:05:18.439 --> 00:05:23.759 And so Paul knows that, so he's writing this letter, and he's aiming at those people at and he suffered for it. 00:06:00.180 --> 00:06:04.220 You know, these marks are actually referenced to scars. 00:06:04.220 --> 00:06:04.440 Scars. 00:06:06.700 --> 00:06:16.960 If you look at 2 Corinthians 11, you get a sense of what Paul suffered for proclaiming the cross of Jesus Christ alone. 00:06:18.540 --> 00:06:20.160 Scars tell stories. 00:06:21.100 --> 00:06:22.640 I've got scars on my body. 00:06:22.720 --> 00:06:26.040 When someone asks me about them, I'm like, oh yeah, I've got a story behind that one. 00:06:26.040 --> 00:06:32.680 The scars on Paul's body are the marks of Jesus. 00:06:33.740 --> 00:06:40.280 The cost he endured to proclaim the cross of Christ alone. 00:06:40.279 --> 00:06:45.199 It's another way of authenticating his ministry. 00:06:46.359 --> 00:06:48.779 Of legitimizing his apostleship. 00:06:48.779 --> 00:06:58.779 So in between these authenticating comments of the apostle Paul at the end of the book of Galatians, 00:06:59.019 --> 00:07:02.479 he then starts talking about boasting. 00:07:03.639 --> 00:07:05.939 A contrast of boasting. 00:07:05.939 --> 00:07:10.500 I tend to think about this as this. 00:07:10.699 --> 00:07:11.839 Paul's wrapping up the book. 00:07:12.779 --> 00:07:21.100 It's kind of like Joshua 24, where Joshua says, okay, Israel, the old Israel, Israel, choose this day whom you're going to serve. 00:07:21.360 --> 00:07:23.540 Either the gods of the land or Yahweh. 00:07:25.480 --> 00:07:27.399 As for me and my house, we'll serve the Lord. 00:07:27.399 --> 00:07:32.859 Paul is saying, choose this day whom you will boast. 00:07:33.719 --> 00:07:34.919 You're going to boast in the flesh. 00:07:35.000 --> 00:07:36.599 You're going to boast in the cross of Christ. 00:07:36.979 --> 00:07:42.959 And Paul says, as for me and God's new people, the Israel of God, we will boast in the cross. 00:07:45.120 --> 00:07:46.839 So what does Paul mean by boasting? 00:07:47.959 --> 00:07:52.560 Well, on the most basic sense, boasting is a kind of speaking about something, right? 00:07:53.599 --> 00:07:56.219 But it's a particular kind of speaking about something. 00:07:57.399 --> 00:08:03.779 Boasting is verbally expressing your confidence in someone or something's ability to win. 00:08:05.359 --> 00:08:06.739 Or to be the best. 00:08:07.639 --> 00:08:10.299 Or to do what nothing or no one else can do. 00:08:11.279 --> 00:08:12.939 My team's the best. 00:08:13.919 --> 00:08:14.739 It's kind of boasting. 00:08:15.739 --> 00:08:17.339 My neighborhood's the best. 00:08:18.159 --> 00:08:19.439 My school's the best. 00:08:20.539 --> 00:08:22.319 My political party's the best. 00:08:23.620 --> 00:08:25.060 My race is the best. 00:08:25.199 --> 00:08:26.379 My gender's the best. 00:08:27.399 --> 00:08:30.120 My religious practices are the best. 00:08:33.240 --> 00:08:36.480 Boasting is a complex thing. 00:08:37.220 --> 00:08:37.980 Here's why. 00:08:38.879 --> 00:08:45.559 When you boast in something, you're actually putting your present trust in that something. 00:08:46.399 --> 00:08:48.639 It's the governing reality of your life. 00:08:48.639 --> has used science for great good in humanity. 00:09:26.259 --> 00:09:30.599 But when people say things like, hey, science will eventually figure everything out. 00:09:30.600 --> 00:09:37.560 People are actually putting their hope in human reason and ingenuity. 00:09:37.559 --> 00:09:42.799 It's future faith. 00:09:42.799 --> 00:09:50.899 And it's not just boasting as a future faith, a hope. 00:09:50.899 --> 00:09:55.079 When you boast in something, it defines you. 00:09:57.240 --> 00:10:02.679 Okay, if you are rooting for the Packers tonight, you're like, go Pack, go! 00:10:04.439 --> 00:10:13.779 --> 00:10:15.000 It's how you think about yourself. 00:10:15.000 --> 00:10:23.419 When you are driving in your car and you're looking at bumper stickers, maybe you should think of them 00:10:59.919 --> 00:11:02.840 Do you remember Jesus' words in Matthew 12? 00:11:02.980 --> 00:11:10.019 Jesus is explaining to his disciples how to discern the difference between an evil person and a good person. 00:11:10.019 --> 00:11:14.340 Jesus uses a tree illustration. 00:11:14.759 --> 00:11:19.460 A tree is known by its fruit, either good fruit or evil fruit. 00:11:19.939 --> 00:11:25.019 And Jesus says, out of the abundance of the heart, the mouth speaks. 00:11:27.179 --> 00:11:35.659 Words are fruit of a heart at its root in what you trust. 00:11:35.659 --> 00:11:40.559 Out of the abundance of the heart, the mouth boasts. 00:11:41.819 --> 00:11:46.179 What you trust in, what you hope in, what defines you, what you celebrate. 00:11:46.939 --> 00:11:51.039 That's what Paul is wants to celebrate something. 00:12:27.840 --> 00:12:31.660 We're all boasters because we're all worshipers. 00:12:33.100 --> 00:12:35.820 So, the question is not whether you should boast or not. passage is that Paul says all of humanity basically has two options to boast in. 00:12:56.120 --> 00:13:02.960 You're either going to boast in the flesh or you're going to boast in the cross. 00:13:02.960 --> 00:13:06.100 What is your ultimate boast? 00:13:06.200 --> 00:13:07.280 It's not an either or. 00:13:08.120 --> 00:13:09.120 It's not a both and. 00:13:09.259 --> 00:13:10.440 It is an either or. 00:13:11.040 --> 00:13:12.860 We must boast in the cross alone. 00:13:13.000 --> 00:13:16.900 So, what is this boasting in the flesh then? 00:13:18.100 --> 00:13:20.700 Well, that's where 12 verses 12 and 13 helps. 00:13:21.780 --> 00:13:30.600 And as I unpack this, I want to help you see the motive and the method and the manner of this boasting. 00:13:30.600 --> 00:13:34.139 But before we get there, I just want to remind you what Paul means by the flesh. 00:13:34.519 --> 00:13:38.500 Because in the book of Galatians, he uses that word flesh in at least two ways. 00:13:39.600 --> 00:13:43.300 Remember in Galatians 5, 16 and 17, Matt preached this a few weeks ago. 00:13:43.960 --> 00:13:55.180 What the flesh is there is this internal self-oriented power that seeks to express itself in desires like strife. 00:13:55.179 --> 00:14:01.000 In envy, jealousy, fits of rage. 00:14:01.399 --> 00:14:06.679 We see all the works of the flesh spelled out in verses 19 through 21 of chapter 5. 00:14:07.399 --> 00:14:12.899 And basically, if there's a banner that you raise over the flesh, it would be this. 00:14:12.959 --> 00:14:14.099 It's not love your neighbor. 00:14:14.519 --> 00:14:15.899 It's use your neighbor. 00:14:16.859 --> 00:14:18.579 Use your neighbor for selfish gain. 00:14:18.580 --> 00:14:30.340 The flesh is in opposition to the Holy Spirit who's seeking to work in us to love our neighbor unto loving God. 00:14:31.340 --> 00:14:39.580 So, the first use of flesh is this internal power that is self-oriented that is seeking to use our neighbors. 00:14:39.580 --> 00:14:42.480 But then there's the second use. 00:14:42.540 --> 00:14:45.340 And the second use of the word flesh shows up in our passage. 00:14:45.940 --> 00:14:48.820 Galatians chapter 6, verses 12 and 14. 00:14:49.560 --> 00:14:54.720 We read, it is those who want to make a good showing in the flesh who would force you to be circumcised. 00:14:55.020 --> 00:14:59.420 Verse 14, but far be it for me to boast except in the cross of Jesus Christ. 00:15:00.740 --> 00:15:02.100 I just got lost there. 00:15:02.100 --> 00:15:10.680 In verse 13, but they desire to have you circumcised that they may boast in your flesh. 00:15:13.159 --> 00:15:17.340 In this passage, flesh is tied to circumcision. 00:15:18.399 --> 00:15:23.420 It's literally referencing the foreskin of a male's sexual organ. 00:15:23.419 --> 00:15:36.259 In Galatians, the false preachers were saying, teaching that in order to be saved, male Gentiles who believed in Jesus needed to have their foreskins removed. 00:15:37.819 --> 00:15:40.740 They needed to become Jews before they could become Christians. 00:15:42.319 --> 00:15:49.779 And regardless if you were a man or woman, you needed to observe Jewish dietary laws and the Jewish holy day calendar. 00:15:49.779 --> 00:16:04.139 And it also sounds like these false teachers were downplaying the cross of Christ and emphasizing obedience to circumcision and eating kosher and observing a calendar so that they wouldn't be persecuted for the cross. 00:16:06.819 --> 00:16:08.279 Here's what I want to help you to see. 00:16:08.279 --> 00:16:22.639 This emphasis on the external flesh of circumcision is just an outworking of that internal power of the flesh within. 00:16:25.079 --> 00:16:26.480 They go hand in hand. 00:16:27.819 --> 00:16:31.759 And that's where we see it played out in motive, method, and manner. 00:16:32.620 --> 00:16:36.199 This boasting in the flesh, what motivates that? 00:16:36.319 --> 00:16:37.899 Well, we see it in verse 12. 00:16:38.279 --> 00:16:44.939 It is those who want to make a good showing in the flesh who would force you to be circumcised. 00:16:45.279 --> 00:16:46.159 A good showing. 00:16:47.379 --> 00:16:49.919 Who do you think they want to make a good showing to? 00:16:54.179 --> 00:16:55.980 They want to be man pleasers. 00:16:56.639 --> 00:17:01.980 They want to impress those who are observing of Jewish descent. 00:17:03.059 --> 00:17:05.799 And they want to impress those people. 00:17:05.799 --> 00:17:11.879 It's the very thing that Paul himself was accused of in chapter 1, verse 10, ironically. 00:17:14.500 --> 00:17:21.700 Those who are boasting in the flesh were seeking to impress others, not God. 00:17:22.079 --> 00:17:23.299 That's the good showing. 00:17:23.299 --> 00:17:31.279 The motive of these boasters in the flesh was to impress man. 00:17:31.279 --> 00:17:38.680 When people's opinion is more important than God's opinion. 00:17:40.279 --> 00:17:42.700 But not just motives of the flesh. 00:17:42.799 --> 00:17:44.819 We see method in verse 12. 00:17:45.579 --> 00:17:50.940 It is those who want to make a good showing in the flesh that would force you to be circumcised. 00:17:50.940 --> 00:17:51.940 Force. 00:17:55.940 --> 00:18:00.039 If you flip back to Galatians chapter 2. 00:18:01.820 --> 00:18:03.620 In verses 2 and 3 we read this. 00:18:03.860 --> 00:18:08.759 I went up because of a revelation and set before them, though privately before those who seemed influential, 00:18:08.980 --> 00:18:13.759 the gospel that I proclaim among the Gentiles in order to make sure I was not running or had run in vain. 00:18:13.759 --> 00:18:20.259 Verse 3, but even Titus, who was with me, was not forced to be circumcised, though he was a Greek. 00:18:21.460 --> 00:18:23.680 Look at chapter 2, verse 14. 00:18:24.019 --> 00:18:27.259 But when I saw that their conduct was not in step with the truth of the gospel, 00:18:27.420 --> 00:18:53.120 It's not loving your neighbor. 00:18:54.300 --> 00:19:00.400 It's using your neighbor in order to impress other people. 00:19:02.540 --> 00:19:06.220 This motives and method, they go were kind of done out of hypocrisy. 00:20:37.940 --> 00:20:44.080 Their boasting in the flesh is a trusting in the flesh, 00:20:44.180 --> 00:20:47.980 a hoping in the flesh, a being defined by the flesh, 00:20:48.360 --> 00:20:50.279 a celebration of the flesh. 00:20:50.380 --> 00:20:52.420 And so let me just ask you this question. 00:20:54.980 --> 00:20:56.660 What does circumcision
