I wonder what passages you give to people and you read 00:00:14.820 --> 00:00:26.199 ! when they're suffering, when they're in trouble. The last pastoral visit that I did with David Barnes, 00:00:26.199 --> 00:00:33.420 we went to see someone, someone who was suffering, and the passage that we read to that person was Isaiah 43. 00:00:34.439 --> 00:00:39.780 It's often a passage that I tune to and read with people who are going through the mill. 00:00:40.939 --> 00:00:48.439 It's one of those mountain peaks of the Bible. It's an incredible passage, isn't it, of comfort and strength 00:00:48.439 --> 00:00:55.019 and encouragement in the midst of all sorts of challenges and difficulties that you and I go through in life. 00:00:55.020 --> 00:01:01.820 And in many ways the passage speaks for itself. But I want to try and mind the depths of it today 00:01:01.820 --> 00:01:08.219 as we think about the context. As we read through a passage like this, I hope that we will see 00:01:08.219 --> 00:01:16.920 that there is never any need for fear for those who God calls his own. There's never any need 00:01:16.920 --> 00:01:25.079 to fear for those who God calls his own. And we're going to think about that by picking up a word that God uses 00:01:25.079 --> 00:01:32.420 here in verse 1. Can you see it? I am the fear not, for I have redeemed you. We're going to think about 00:01:32.420 --> 00:01:40.520 redemption as it's spelled out in Isaiah chapter 43. Fear not, for I have redeemed you. You do not need to be 00:01:40.519 --> 00:01:47.479 afraid because I have rescued you already. I purchased you for a price. I redeemed you. 00:01:48.359 --> 00:01:51.340 And so we'll think about three things. We'll think about the object of that redemption. 00:01:52.239 --> 00:01:56.739 We'll think about the commitment of that redemption. And then lastly the consequence of that redemption. 00:01:57.699 --> 00:02:03.340 So we can see that there's never any need to fear for those whom God has called. 00:02:03.340 --> 00:02:10.780 So firstly the object of redemption. Look at verse 1. But now that says, the Lord, 00:02:12.580 --> 00:02:17.199 He who created you, O Jacob, He who formed you, O Israel, 00:02:18.280 --> 00:02:24.520 Fear not, for I have redeemed you. I have called you by name. You are mine. 00:02:25.819 --> 00:02:30.039 Now I think the question that you've got to deal with right away is, who is the you? 00:02:30.039 --> 00:02:37.159 Who is the you that God is referring to here? Who is the you that God has redeemed? 00:02:38.639 --> 00:02:44.159 And we would say right away that this verse tells us, the you is referring to those whom God has created. 00:02:45.579 --> 00:02:51.199 Those whom God has formed. Those who are named here as Jacob or Israel. 00:02:51.500 --> 00:02:54.199 That is, He's referring to the people of God. 00:02:54.199 --> 00:03:00.739 And we saw in chapter 40 that God has promised to rescue Israel out of exile in Babylon. 00:03:02.179 --> 00:03:06.479 Well we might think that, is what God is saying here, that He's going to redeem them, 00:03:06.519 --> 00:03:09.299 He's going to just bring them back from that foreign land. 00:03:09.619 --> 00:03:11.259 And I think that it's bigger than that. 00:03:12.259 --> 00:03:18.899 I think we're clued into the fact that it's bigger by the very first word in chapter 43, but. 00:03:18.900 --> 00:03:21.800 That is, but now. 00:03:22.980 --> 00:03:26.219 You don't have anything to fear because I've redeemed you. 00:03:26.460 --> 00:03:32.640 It almost seems to indicate that just prior to this, Israel, Isaiah has given evidence 00:03:32.640 --> 00:03:35.599 for why they might think that they need to fear. 00:03:36.740 --> 00:03:38.560 Why they do need to be afraid. 00:03:39.840 --> 00:03:43.879 And sure enough, if you just look back to the end of chapter 42, you'll see that that is the case. 00:03:43.879 --> 00:03:45.819 So look at verses 18 to 20. 00:03:45.819 --> 00:03:50.659 Hear you deaf, look you blind, that you may see. 00:03:50.959 --> 00:03:54.159 Who is blind but my servant, or deaf as my messenger or my son? 00:03:54.379 --> 00:03:56.539 Who is blind as my dedicated one? 00:03:57.079 --> 00:03:58.959 As blind as the servant of the Lord. 00:03:59.439 --> 00:04:01.959 He sees many things, but he does not observe them. 00:04:02.280 --> 00:04:04.560 His ears are open, but he does not hear. 00:04:04.879 --> 00:04:10.019 And God's people, at the end of Isaiah chapter 42, at the start of 43, have got a big problem. 00:04:11.680 --> 00:04:13.959 They've got problems which they need to be rescued from. 00:04:13.960 --> 00:04:19.300 Which is that they are spiritually dense and senseless. 00:04:20.720 --> 00:04:24.960 And God has called Israel to be his messenger to the world. 00:04:25.319 --> 00:04:26.259 To be his servant. 00:04:28.480 --> 00:04:30.400 They have the capacity, don't they? 00:04:31.139 --> 00:04:33.860 They have the capacity to hear and to see. 00:04:34.120 --> 00:04:36.139 But he says, you are deaf and you are blind. 00:04:36.139 --> 00:04:41.079 So the reason we saw last week, where God has to send a new servant. 00:04:42.099 --> 00:04:45.319 An individual servant, who we've discovered is Jesus. 00:04:45.800 --> 00:04:51.699 Because this servant, the servant that God had wanted of the people of Israel, they have failed completely. 00:04:52.699 --> 00:04:55.060 They have failed completely to do what he wanted them to do. 00:04:55.459 --> 00:04:58.099 Israel have become like their idols, Isaiah says. 00:04:58.100 --> 00:05:01.540 They have become deaf and blind. 00:05:03.100 --> 00:05:05.939 And that's the threat, all the way through the book of Isaiah. 00:05:06.260 --> 00:05:08.820 That the Israelites are becoming like their idols. 00:05:10.120 --> 00:05:11.920 Greg Beal, in his book on Idolity, says. 00:05:12.160 --> 00:05:15.180 We become like what we worship. 00:05:16.220 --> 00:05:17.500 We become what we worship. 00:05:17.760 --> 00:05:20.460 He says, we end up resembling what we revere. 00:05:21.439 --> 00:05:23.780 Either for ruin or for restoration. 00:05:23.779 --> 00:05:28.199 And the Israelites, as they worshipped idols. 00:05:29.519 --> 00:05:31.399 That they had begun to revere. 00:05:33.019 --> 00:05:34.419 And it had become their ruin. 00:05:35.699 --> 00:05:39.239 And they had become completely insensitive to their condition. 00:05:40.859 --> 00:05:42.939 I don't know if you've heard of Dr. Paul Brand. 00:05:43.339 --> 00:05:46.039 Dr. Paul Brand was a medical missionary in India. 00:05:46.559 --> 00:05:51.919 And he did some amazing work amongst the leper communities in that country in the 1950s. 00:05:51.920 --> 00:05:55.000 Lepercy, of course, it's a terrible disease. 00:05:55.660 --> 00:05:59.040 And it creates in its victims a lack of sensitivity. 00:06:00.120 --> 00:06:03.400 And lepers have an inability to feel pain. 00:06:04.600 --> 00:06:08.580 And Brand would look at lepers working during the day. 00:06:09.420 --> 00:06:11.160 Lepers would be working with shovels. 00:06:11.560 --> 00:06:16.060 And in some of those shovels, he would notice that there was a nail sticking out on the handle. 00:06:17.000 --> 00:06:20.120 And it would cause the hands of the operators to start bleeding. 00:06:20.120 --> 00:06:22.600 But of course, they didn't have sense of feeling. 00:06:23.819 --> 00:06:26.180 So they had no sense of them being injured. 00:06:26.540 --> 00:06:30.680 They would just continue to dig with blood pouring down their hands. 00:06:32.420 --> 00:06:35.699 What puzzled Brand is that when they came back to work the next day, 00:06:36.220 --> 00:06:41.379 those parts of their extremities, their fingers and their toes, would actually be missing. 00:06:41.379 --> 00:06:49.319 And for years, it was believed that leprosy literally kind of attacked at the bones of the fingers and the toes. 00:06:51.000 --> 00:06:53.980 But Brand discovered that it wasn't actually leprosy itself. 00:06:55.439 --> 00:06:59.079 But rather, while the lepers were sleeping in their open dormities, rats would come in. 00:07:00.019 --> 00:07:02.939 And literally eat the wounded fingers of the lepers. 00:07:02.939 --> 00:07:08.199 And because there was no tactile feedback whatsoever, they never felt it. 00:07:08.240 --> 00:07:11.180 So they woke up on the rats at a feast in the mud huts of India. 00:07:12.120 --> 00:07:16.399 I think that's probably the grossest illustration that I've ever given in 13 years. 00:07:18.000 --> 00:07:22.360 But Isaiah is reminding Israel, you need rescue. 00:07:22.360 --> 00:07:30.500 Because Israel's idolatry had rendered her completely insensitive to their spiritualness of sin. 00:07:30.699 --> 00:07:31.639 They were like the lepers. 00:07:31.860 --> 00:07:32.699 They didn't know they were bleeding. 00:07:33.660 --> 00:07:35.520 They didn't know the rats were eating their fingers. 00:07:35.900 --> 00:07:36.800 They'd become deaf. 00:07:36.879 --> 00:07:37.920 They'd become blind. 00:07:38.180 --> 00:07:40.259 And they were oblivious for the situation. 00:07:42.240 --> 00:07:46.220 That even when God would bring serious judgment upon them, they still didn't get it. 00:07:46.420 --> 00:07:48.040 So look at chapter 42, verse 25. 00:07:48.040 --> 00:07:52.900 So he poured on him the heat of his anger and the night of his battle. 00:07:53.300 --> 00:07:56.120 It set him on fire all around, but he did not understand. 00:07:57.300 --> 00:07:59.379 It burned him up, but he didn't take it apart. 00:08:01.560 --> 00:08:04.420 And the Israelites were not going to get it on their own. 00:08:04.480 redeemed anyone outside the category of idolatry. 00:08:53.359 --> 00:08:58.479 Because there is no one outside that category of idolatry. 00:08:59.639 --> 00:09:04.299 John Payton was a Scottish missionary to the New Hebrides in the South Pacific in the late 1800s. 00:09:04.859 --> 00:09:06.719 It was a magnificent autobiography. 00:09:06.720 --> 00:09:11.019 It was not a missionary call to the faint-hearted. 00:09:11.600 --> 00:09:12.940 The natives were cannibals. 00:09:13.879 --> 00:09:17.680 They were cannibals who would occasionally eat the flesh of their defeated foes. 00:09:17.779 --> 00:09:19.160 They practiced infanticide. 00:09:19.960 --> 00:09:20.860 And widow sacrifice. 00:09:21.160 --> 00:09:25.480 They sacrificed widows because they thought if they killed the widow of 00:14:12.779 So he gives the extreme example of raging waters on the one hand and blazing fire on the other. 00:14:13.980 --> 00:14:17.680 And God commits himself to go with us through all those
