00:02:06.439 So here we are at the end of our study in Galatians. 00:02:06.439 --> 00:02:15.539 Here is Paul as pastor providing closing wisdom, warning, encouragement to these young Christians. 00:02:15.659 --> 00:02:17.500 And I think today it's perfect timing. 00:02:17.599 --> 00:02:24.120 This is God's timing as we welcome new members, as we have in our church, young Christians. 00:02:24.740 --> 00:02:29.400 It's a wonderful reminder at the end of the letter, what is it that we are to keep believing? 00:02:29.939 --> 00:02:33.460 And how is it that we are to live as God's people? 00:02:33.460 --> 00:02:38.719 And of course, these are important for us at any stage of our Christian lives. 00:02:39.120 --> 00:02:44.460 And for people who are here who aren't Christians, it's a really helpful section, in a sense, 00:02:44.540 --> 00:02:47.819 a summary of what lies at the heart of Christianity. 00:02:49.020 --> 00:02:55.280 Keep on doing good, Paul will say, because of the goodness of God to you in sending the Lord Jesus. 00:02:55.939 --> 00:03:01.100 And keep the cross of Jesus at the heart of your life, at the heart of your faith. 00:03:01.099 --> 00:03:03.579 These are the two big ideas we're going to focus on. 00:03:04.479 --> 00:03:07.759 Now, as with the whole letter, we've seen this as we've gone through Galatians. 00:03:07.919 --> 00:03:14.539 Paul presents two very different ways of life, two ways that people try and pursue acceptance with God. 00:03:15.259 --> 00:03:20.979 There is the way of the false teachers, which was all about you need to save yourself. 00:03:21.099 --> 00:03:23.299 You need to do something to prove yourself. 00:03:23.680 --> 00:03:25.599 It's a religion based on appearance. 00:03:25.599 --> 00:03:28.099 And it's based on performance. 00:03:28.919 --> 00:03:33.219 And Paul will remind us one last time, it's a road to nowhere. 00:03:33.359 --> 00:03:35.579 That's not the way to know God. 00:03:36.219 --> 00:03:41.319 Or there is Paul's message, the gospel message, the Bible message that says, 00:03:41.319 --> 00:03:48.979 you can depend entirely and trust completely only in Jesus for salvation. 00:03:49.639 --> 00:03:53.879 And you'll find acceptance from God through him. 00:03:53.959 --> 00:04:01.539 And you'll find both the power and the motivation to live for him because of this grace that comes to us. 00:04:01.539 --> 00:04:04.679 So one last time, here is Paul. 00:04:04.759 --> 00:04:10.419 Like any good parent, like any good teacher, they know if a lesson is worth knowing, 00:04:10.599 --> --> 00:05:16.420 We might go all capital letters. 00:05:16.420 --> 00:05:23.140 We might do bold capital letters and underline it to make clear this is something really important. 00:05:23.980 --> 00:05:25.600 So what Paul is doing in verse 11. 00:05:27.160 --> 00:05:31.960 See what large letters I use as I write to you with my own hand. 00:05:32.060 --> 00:05:34.259 Here's Paul taking over takes the pen, and he begins in very big letters to deliver one last message. 00:05:45.699 --> 00:05:47.519 One personal message from his heart. 00:05:47.599 --> 00:05:51.399 And he's saying, hear me loud and clear on this. 00:05:51.899 --> 00:05:58.279 And what follows is one last attack on the false teaching that was saying Jesus is not enough. 00:05:58.799 --> 00:05:59.959 The cross is not enough. 00:06:00.060 --> 00:06:02.319 You also need to become Jewish and be circumcised. 00:06:02.319 --> 00:06:09.219 And there's also one more celebration of God's grace in Jesus as he calls us to boast in the cross. 00:06:09.659 --> 00:06:11.480 So he underlines two kinds of boasting. 00:06:11.980 --> 00:06:17.120 There's the bad boasting of the false teachers and there's good gospel boasting. is to say, this is where I place my confidence. 00:06:31.840 --> 00:06:35.060 This is something that I think defines me. 00:06:35.980 --> 00:06:39.260 This is something that I think earns my place. academic or intellectual credentials. 00:06:51.379 --> 00:06:54.320 And they'll like to show intellectual superiority. 00:06:55.379 --> 00:06:58.000 Now we will find people who will boast in their And this is what Paul warns us against. 00:07:24.600 --> 00:07:32.200 He's going to say to us, don't think you'll be okay with God based on appearances. 00:07:32.680 --> 00:07:38.040 Or based on the Paul loves the church in Galatia. 00:07:56.520 --> 00:07:59.319 And he hates to see them being led astray. 00:07:59.319 --> 00:08:06.139 And so he has hard words to say to those who are causing chaos in the church. 00:08:06.139 --> 00:08:13.599 So in verse 12, Paul effectively calls the teachers bullies. 00:08:13.979 --> 00:08:15.800 Look at what he says at the beginning of the verse. 00:08:15.919 --> 00:08:19.659 Those who want to make a good impression outwardly are trying to what? 00:08:19.740 --> 00:08:22.639 They're trying to compel you to be circumcised. 00:08:22.699 --> 00:08:28.599 They're exercising force to try and make people conform to the Jewish law. 00:08:28.600 --> 00:08:30.500 Paul calls them bullies. 00:08:31.300 --> 00:08:33.580 He says they're hypocrites in verse 13. 00:08:34.240 --> 00:08:36.779 Not even those who are circumcised obey the law. 00:08:37.240 --> 00:08:39.100 Yet they want you to be circumcised. 00:08:39.200 --> 00:08:40.700 So they're not keeping the law. 00:08:41.180 --> 00:08:45.980 But they're saying to others, I'm going to force you to be law abiding. 00:08:46.480 --> 00:08:48.899 To try and keep the law that I myself am not keeping. 00:08:49.019 --> 00:08:50.180 So Paul calls them hypocrites. 00:08:50.379 --> 00:08:53.180 And he calls them cowards. 00:08:53.179 --> 00:08:55.899 Second part of verse 12. 00:08:57.099 --> 00:09:00.219 The only reason they're compelling people to be circumcised, Paul says, 00:09:00.399 --> 00:09:05.379 is to avoid being persecuted for the cross of Christ. 00:09:07.339 --> 00:09:09.959 So they're delivering this message that says, 00:09:10.399 --> 00:09:13.579 you can be good enough for God by trying harder and becoming Jewish 00:09:13.579 --> 00:09:16.639 because they don't want to face opposition. 00:09:17.120 --> 00:09:22.339 So they are cowardly and they're avoiding the persecution of the cross. 00:09:23.179 --> 00:09:24.459 And they're boasting in. 00:09:24.479 --> 00:09:25.319 What are they boasting in? 00:09:25.679 --> 00:09:27.479 Well, they're trying to make a good impression. 00:09:27.699 --> 00:09:29.039 So they're boasting in themselves. 00:09:29.439 --> 00:09:35.799 And end of verse 13, they want people to be circumcised that they may boast about your flesh. 00:09:36.679 --> 00:09:40.059 So they're boasting in, here's my good spiritual record. 00:09:40.219 --> 00:09:42.739 Here's my record of appearances and performance. 00:09:43.019 --> 00:09:47.059 And they're boasting in their ability to make others like them. 00:09:47.799 --> 00:09:49.620 They're not trying to make others like Jesus, 00:09:49.620 --> 00:09:52.580 more Christ-like, more spirit-filled, 00:09:52.759 --> 00:09:54.620 to make them more like them. 00:09:56.620 --> 00:09:58.600 And so Paul delivers a warning. 00:09:59.519 --> 00:10:01.299 He says, don't rely on religious habits. 00:10:02.159 --> 00:10:04.480 What we need is not habits. 00:10:04.740 --> --> 00:10:53.339 It's something that we should engage in as the church. 00:10:53.419 --> 00:10:55.600 So what is Christian boasting? 00:10:55.740 --> 00:10:56.839 What's gospel boasting? 00:10:56.840 --> 00:11:08.940 Verse 14, may I never boast except in the cross of our Lord Jesus Christ through which the world has been crucified to me and I to the world. 00:11:09.500 --> 00:11:18.320 Our only source of boasting, our always source of boasting is Jesus and his death for us on the cross. 00:11:18.960 --> 00:11:24.860 We boast in God's grace in Jesus' sacrifice. 00:11:24.860 --> 00:11:34.940 But the question I suppose that it raises is why would we boast about the cross, this brutal, shameful form of execution? 00:11:35.960 --> 00:11:44.240 And what Paul has done throughout the letter of the Galatians is that he's shown what the death of Jesus has achieved for his people. 00:11:45.620 --> 00:11:48.300 So let's just refresh our memories. 00:11:48.299 --> 00:11:57.459 In chapter 1, we were told right at the beginning that God gave Jesus to rescue us from our sins. 00:11:58.259 --> 00:12:06.719 So we boast of the cross because the cross is the place where we're delivered from the power of sin, where we're set free to know life with God. 00:12:06.720 --> 00:12:18.200 In chapter 2, we discover that it's because Jesus dies for us that we can die to sin and enjoy new life in him. 00:12:18.639 --> 00:12:24.080 So we boast in the fact that this new life that we have is a gift secured for us at the cross. 00:12:24.080 --> 00:12:33.420 In chapter 3, Paul talked about being under a curse because of our law breaking, because of our disobedience. 00:12:33.480 --> 00:12:39.480 And then Jesus comes and he goes under the curse for us to lift the curse from us. 00:12:39.540 --> 00:12:45.440 So instead of curse from God, if our faith is in Jesus, we can enjoy the blessing of God. 00:12:45.440 --> 00:12:55.460 We can enjoy the goodness and the love of God because Jesus took the just anger of God against our sin to set us free. 00:12:55.720 --> 00:13:02.780 In chapter 4, we discover that it's through what Jesus does for us that we can be adopted as children of God. 00:13:37.000 --> 00:13:42.360 The cross is a part of that process of making us a new creation. 00:13:43.419 --> 00:13:49.379 God's powerful grace in dealing with our sin and bringing us back to God gives us new birth, brings us new life. 00:13:49.879 --> 00:13:58.079 And then in chapter 6, in verse 14, we see that the cross makes this distinctive break for us with the world. 00:13:58.079 --> 00:14:01.960 The cross marks the end of the world's claims on us. 00:14:02.340 --> 00:14:09.759 Before, we were controlled by sin and we pursued the values of the world and we wanted approval from the approval from God, our Father in heaven. 00:14:19.460 --> 00:14:24.620 So Paul has come to understand that we must boast in something. 00:14:24.620 --> 00:14:32.060 You can't boast in self and the the heart of every Christian confession of faith in Jesus. 00:15:20.040 --> 00:15:23.000 The cross is for me personally. 00:15:24.220 --> 00:15:28.980 So there is an invitation here to gospel city, 00:18:02.640 --> 00:18:09.600 all of them supplied by this pure groundwater that bubbles up below. 00:18:11.560 --> 00:18:18.400 We, as Christians, our calling is to refresh our city.
