at the end of the sermon last week, I pointed you to those three fours in verse 25. 00:03:51.460 --> 00:03:54.780 Verse 25, do you see that in chapter 16? 00:03:55.840 --> 00:04:00.020 You read the in the glory of his Father, 00:04:35.819 --> 00:04:38.699 and then he will repay each person according to what he has done. 00:04:38.699 --> 00:04:44.379 And so he's saying, I'm going to come back someday, and I'm going to judge everyone. 00:04:44.740 --> 00:04:45.680 I'm going to repay them. 00:04:46.039 --> 00:04:50.500 So if you live this life now for yourself, I will repay you accordingly. call to follow Jesus. 00:05:47.360 --> 00:05:51.300 It's part of Jesus' rationale to come after him. 00:05:51.300 --> 00:05:56.180 He's saying, come after me because I'm coming back. 00:05:56.280 --> 00:06:00.740 There's a future glory, and let me give you a glimpse of this glory now. 00:06:02.740 --> 00:06:08.840 The transfiguration is motivation to live for Christ. 00:06:09.720 --> 00:06:21.000 Getting a glimpse of the glory of Christ compels us to follow him in all of our life for all of our days. 00:06:21.300 --> 00:06:24.120 And so the transfiguration is not just a historical event. 00:06:25.800 --> 00:06:29.280 It's purposed by God to motivate you to follow Jesus. 00:06:30.100 --> 00:06:32.400 It gives you a glimpse of his glory. 00:06:33.439 --> 00:06:35.060 So for us, here's what this means. 00:06:36.060 --> 00:06:40.240 The transfiguration took place almost 2,000 years ago, 00:06:40.240 --> 00:06:46.800 and God intends it to have an effect on us today in 2017. 00:06:48.319 --> 00:06:50.220 To be followers of Jesus. 00:06:51.180 --> 00:06:53.180 It's fuel for followership. 00:06:53.180 --> 00:07:00.079 And so this one who calls us to deny ourselves, take up our cross, and follow him, 00:07:00.780 --> 00:07:02.699 he's the glorious one. 00:07:04.139 --> 00:07:05.720 He's breathtaking. 00:07:07.280 --> 00:07:08.759 He's overwhelming. 00:07:08.759 --> 00:07:14.939 And what we're going to see is his full glory, 00:07:16.199 --> 00:07:20.300 accompanied by an anticipation of a fullness of suffering, 00:07:20.980 --> 00:07:25.500 that's all designed to accomplish a full salvation, 00:07:26.039 --> 00:07:27.599 the restoration of all things. 00:07:27.600 --> 00:07:31.680 And it results in you fully following him. 00:07:33.680 --> 00:07:35.120 So here's how we're going to proceed. 00:07:35.240 --> 00:07:38.800 We're going to walk through verses 1 through 13 of chapter 17, 00:07:39.120 --> 00:07:42.220 and then I'm going to bring it to a point and ask you two questions, 00:07:42.879 --> 00:07:46.860 and then we'll bring it to bear, say amen, sing a song, and go follow him. 00:07:46.860 --> 00:07:49.980 All right. 00:07:50.800 --> 00:07:53.540 If you would look at chapter 17, verse 1, 00:07:53.740 --> 00:07:56.600 and after six days Jesus took with him Peter, James, and John, 00:07:57.160 --> 00:08:00.560 his brother, and led them up a high mountain by themselves. 00:08:01.720 --> 00:08:03.800 Now here's what you've got to be aware of right away. 00:08:04.000 --> 00:08:07.780 Matthew, you really doesn't talk that much in terms of specific times. 00:08:08.800 --> 00:08:11.500 And so when he gets very specific about six days, 00:08:11.860 --> 00:08:13.220 it should catch your attention. 00:08:13.400 --> 00:08:15.300 Like, Matthew, why are you being so specific? 00:08:15.300 --> 00:08:17.360 It's because he's making a connection. 00:08:18.100 --> 00:08:21.319 He wants us to understand that what Jesus says in verse 28 00:08:21.319 --> 00:08:26.000 finds its fulfillment in what happens on this mountaintop six days later. 00:08:28.500 --> 00:08:32.960 And notice that Jesus is bringing with him three of his disciples. 00:08:33.180 --> 00:08:35.419 These are, it's the inner group. 00:08:36.320 --> 00:08:38.060 It's Peter, James, and John. 00:08:38.180 --> 00:08:40.100 James and John are the sons of Zebedee. 00:08:40.560 --> 00:08:43.960 And Jesus brings them with them up on the top of this mountain. 00:08:43.960 --> 00:08:47.600 And these are the same three guys that in Matthew 26, 00:08:47.960 --> 00:08:51.180 Jesus is going to pull them aside in the Garden of Gethsemane. 00:08:52.400 --> 00:08:53.960 They played a special role. 00:08:53.960 --> 00:09:00.759 So Jesus brings them up onto this mountaintop. 00:09:02.120 --> 00:09:05.879 Now, if you're familiar with mountaintops and the Bible, 00:09:06.200 --> 00:09:10.460 you'll quickly remember that throughout the Old Testament, 00:09:10.900 --> 00:09:14.180 a lot of revelation of God's glory happens on mountaintops. 00:09:14.179 --> 00:09:20.459 And so Moses on the mountaintop in Exodus 19 and 24 and 34, 00:09:20.459 --> 00:09:24.559 God meets him there and reveals himself to him. 00:09:24.759 --> 00:09:27.620 And Elijah on the mountaintop in 1 Kings 19, 00:09:27.620 --> 00:09:30.219 when he squares off against the prophets of Baal, 00:09:30.339 --> 00:09:34.000 and God shows up in awesome, awesome ways. 00:09:34.000 --> 00:09:37.960 And so Jesus is very purposefully, 00:09:38.460 --> 00:09:41.340 in verse 1, bringing these three disciples 00:09:41.340 --> 00:09:43.700 up onto this mountaintop 00:09:43.700 --> 00:09:47.539 so that they would behold his glory, 00:09:48.279 --> 00:09:50.519 so that they would follow him. 00:09:50.519 --> 00:10:03.079 In Luke chapter 9, we learned that during this whole episode, 00:10:03.480 --> 00:10:05.399 the disciples were really sleepy. 00:10:07.059 --> 00:10:11.220 And chances are this all happened at night, 00:10:11.519 --> 00:10:15.919 which is important for what's about to happen. 00:10:16.899 --> 00:10:18.840 So here's what I want you to see so far. 00:10:18.840 --> 00:10:22.300 Right now, in verse 1, 00:10:22.519 --> 00:10:26.139 Jesus is bringing his disciples up to the mountaintop. 00:10:26.899 --> 00:10:30.340 And he's just being faithful to what he said he would do in verse 28. 00:10:30.780 --> 00:10:34.820 So already, Jesus is being faithful to his word. 00:10:37.000 --> 00:10:38.120 And now in verse 2, 00:10:38.220 --> 00:10:41.940 we have this Christological light show that takes place. 00:10:42.519 --> 00:10:43.540 Do you like laser shows? 00:10:45.120 --> 00:10:47.460 Have you been to a planetarium thing at night? 00:10:47.460 --> 00:10:49.300 You know, dark lights. 00:10:50.100 --> 00:10:51.660 Been to fireworks recently. 00:10:52.920 --> 00:10:55.120 What happens on this mountaintop 00:10:55.120 --> 00:10:57.019 supersedes them all. 00:10:58.080 --> 00:10:59.519 We read in verse 2, 00:10:59.519 --> 00:11:10.980 Jesus is transfigured. 00:11:10.980 --> 00:11:12.539 Jesus is transfigured. 00:11:12.659 --> 00:11:16.240 And we get our word metamorphosis from that word transfigured. 00:11:16.360 --> 00:11:20.840 He was dramatically changed in his appearance before his disciples. 00:11:21.960 --> 00:11:23.779 His face shone like the sun. 00:11:23.779 --> 00:11:28.699 Have you recently tried to look at the sun around midday? 00:11:29.819 --> 00:11:30.879 You can't. 00:11:31.100 Jesus, 00:12:13.939 --> 00:12:16.779 his clothes were bedazzled 00:12:16.779 --> 00:12:21.179 from the glory that he was emanating. 00:12:24.159 --> 00:12:27.639 Kind of harkens back to Revelation chapter 1 00:12:27.639 --> 00:12:30.500 where John, the son of Zebedee, 00:12:30.759 --> 00:12:33.659 has another vision of the glorified Christ, 00:12:33.659 --> 00:12:36.759 and he sees him in his brilliant glory. 00:12:37.259 --> 00:12:39.980 And in verse 17, he drops as a dead man. 00:12:43.000 --> 00:12:45.000 Here we have on this mountaintop, 00:12:45.480 --> 00:12:48.279 Jesus' brilliance on display. 00:12:48.459 --> 00:12:50.279 And I just want to pause here and ask a question. 00:12:50.860 --> 00:12:52.539 What kind of brilliance are we talking about? 00:12:54.879 --> 00:12:56.079 On a full moon, 00:12:56.860 --> 00:12:59.000 I can walk around my neighborhood 00:12:59.000 --> 00:13:00.639 because it's basically lit up. 00:13:01.259 --> 00:13:02.720 I can see pretty well. 00:13:03.659 --> 00:13:06.459 The moon is brilliant. 00:13:07.719 --> 00:13:10.839 It's a reflected brilliance 00:13:10.839 --> 00:13:13.319 because we all know that the moon 00:13:13.319 --> 00:13:15.579 does not generate its own brilliance. 00:13:16.539 --> 00:13:18.519 That the moon is simply reflecting 00:13:18.519 --> 00:13:20.259 the brilliance of the sun. 00:13:22.559 --> 00:13:24.519 But when it comes to the sun, 00:13:26.079 --> 00:13:28.519 the splendor of the sun, 00:13:28.519 --> 00:13:34.159 it is essential to its nature. 00:13:35.500 --> 00:13:39.500 The sun generates its own heat and light. 00:13:41.659 --> 00:13:43.699 And so the brilliance that we see here 00:13:43.699 --> 00:13:46.019 in verse 2 of chapter 17, 00:13:46.240 --> 00:13:48.539 it's not a reflected brilliance. 00:13:48.699 --> 00:13:50.919 Remember when Moses came down off the mountain 00:13:50.919 --> 00:13:52.699 and he had to veil his face 00:13:52.699 --> 00:13:54.919 because he was reflecting the glory of God? 00:13:54.919 --> 00:13:56.500 It's not that kind of brilliance. 00:13:57.179 --> 00:13:58.740 The brilliance on display here 00:13:58.740 --> 00:14:01.360 is a brilliance of God himself 00:14:01.360 --> 00:14:03.860 emanating outwards. 00:14:04.099 --> 00:14:06.839 It is a radiating glory. 00:14:06.840 --> 00:14:12.300 What we see happening here 00:14:12.300 --> 00:14:14.940 are the disciples are getting a glimpse 00:14:14.940 --> 00:14:19.160 of the unveiled essential splendor 00:14:19.160 --> 00:14:22.160 of the second person of the Trinity. 00:14:22.159 --> 00:14:25.659 This is the way he's always been like. 00:14:26.019 --> 00:14:27.980 His pre-incarnate glory, 00:14:28.579 --> 00:14:31.519 this is the way he's always existed. 00:14:32.059 --> 00:14:34.039 And when he comes back someday 00:14:34.039 --> 00:14:36.879 in Revelation 21 and 22, 00:14:37.559 --> 00:14:39.860 do you remember the light source 00:14:39.860 --> 00:14:41.019 of the new Jerusalem? 00:14:42.019 --> 00:14:43.539 Doesn't need the sun anymore. 00:14:44.579 --> 00:14:46.639 Jesus is lighting up the place 00:14:46.639 --> 00:14:52.279 because of his
