Jesus gives us here a wonderful picture of our relationship with God. 00:04:00.419 --> 00:04:04.740 Sheep in a sheepfold and a shepherd. 00:04:06.340 --> 00:04:09.340 And then he uses multiple metaphors through the rest of the chapter 00:04:09.340 --> 00:04:11.599 to teach us about our relationship. 00:04:12.219 --> 00:04:18.959 Probably the most familiar of those being that Jesus is the good shepherd. 00:04:18.959 --> 00:04:24.060 What a deeply personal image for our relationship with him. 00:04:24.379 --> 00:04:28.419 Hearing his voice, recognizing who he is, 00:04:28.779 --> has given here, 00:04:46.180 --> 00:04:50.519 we get the third of his I am statements in John. 00:04:51.279 --> 00:04:55.019 Jesus says, I am the door. 00:04:56.319 --> 00:04:58.779 Or the gate, sometimes you've heard it translated. 00:04:59.839 --> 00:05:02.560 The picture Jesus is using here would have been much more familiar 00:05:02.560 --> 00:05:05.379 to his original audience than it probably is to you. 00:05:05.379 --> 00:05:10.680 So I want to give you a little bit of a picture of what they might have had in mind. 00:05:11.079 --> 00:05:17.199 These sheepfolds would have been all over the place near where Jesus is talking to them. 00:05:17.839 --> 00:05:24.800 Probably six foot tall stone walls with a single door where the shepherd would stand 00:05:24.800 --> 00:05:26.480 to keep the sheep in. 00:05:26.519 --> 00:05:30.439 Or perhaps even at night lie down in front of the door to sleep 00:05:30.439 --> 00:05:33.680 so that no sheep escape overnight. 00:05:34.759 --> 00:05:38.379 Often sheep were owned by multiple families in the same village 00:05:38.379 --> 00:05:40.699 and they would get together and share a sheepfold 00:05:40.699 --> 00:05:44.300 so that one shepherd could watch over all of them. 00:05:45.620 --> 00:05:52.959 So Jesus is giving us a picture like this of a sheepfold of God's family, right? 00:05:53.379 --> 00:05:54.579 That's what he's talking about. 00:05:55.079 --> 00:05:57.540 He will speak of himself as the shepherd. 00:05:57.540 --> 00:06:04.879 But in these verses, his point is first that he is the door, 00:06:05.200 --> 00:06:09.420 the way into relationship with God and with his people. 00:06:10.439 --> 00:06:15.020 It is really important to Jesus here to answer the question, 00:06:15.860 --> 00:06:18.720 how do I get in with God? 00:06:19.340 --> 00:06:21.040 Maybe you've wondered that. 00:06:21.300 --> 00:06:23.220 How do I get in with God? 00:06:23.220 --> 00:06:31.980 Notice from the first verse, Jesus is talking about the possibility of other ways in. 00:06:33.240 --> 00:06:34.700 Climbing in. 00:06:35.320 --> 00:06:36.960 Pretty dangerous perhaps. 00:06:37.140 --> 00:06:42.720 That would be done only by thieves and robbers. 00:06:43.000 --> 00:06:45.240 People out to harm the sheep. 00:06:45.240 --> 00:06:52.540 So the contrast here in this passage is most pointedly the unfaithful shepherds 00:06:52.540 --> 00:06:56.100 like the Pharisees Jesus is just speaking to 00:06:56.100 --> 00:06:58.980 who don't enter through Jesus at all, do they? 00:06:59.019 --> 00:07:00.280 They're chasing him off. 00:07:00.699 --> 00:07:03.720 They don't point others to Jesus either. 00:07:04.319 --> 00:07:07.519 The contrast with them and the faithful shepherds, 00:07:07.900 --> 00:07:10.900 which eventually includes Jesus himself. 00:07:10.899 --> 00:07:15.099 But initially here it means those who enter through Jesus 00:07:15.099 --> 00:07:19.739 and who point people to the true door, to him. 00:07:20.859 --> 00:07:23.519 See, if Jesus is the true door, 00:07:23.899 --> 00:07:29.039 he wants us to know the dangers of trying to climb in another way. 00:07:30.659 --> 00:07:36.959 The thieves and robbers come to steal and kill and destroy. 00:07:37.299 --> 00:07:38.259 Verse 10. 00:07:38.259 --> 00:07:40.699 That's serious language. 00:07:41.719 --> 00:07:43.579 That's a serious danger. 00:07:44.039 --> 00:07:45.639 When they get in among God's people, 00:07:45.800 --> 00:07:48.539 it causes harm to the sheep 00:07:48.539 --> 00:07:52.360 because they continue to miss Jesus. Or perhaps it's religious ritual. 00:08:18.000 --> 00:08:19.639 You know, go through the right ceremonies. 00:08:19.800 --> 00:08:21.180 Make sure you're baptized. 00:08:21.560 --> 00:08:22.980 Check 00:08:45.279 That's what makes you a Christian, right? 00:08:45.480 --> 00:08:46.480 You've heard that. 00:08:46.699 --> 00:08:47.639 It's how you talk. 00:08:48.360 --> 00:08:49.559 It's how you vote. 00:08:50.679 --> 00:08:52.639 It's how you teach your kids, 00:08:52.719 --> 00:08:54.039 how you spend your money, 00:08:54.279 --> 00:08:55.539 how you keep the rules, 00:08:55.699 --> 00:08:56.919 how you love your neighbor. 00:08:56.919 --> 00:09:00.439 A lot of that sounds good, doesn't it? 00:09:02.019 --> 00:09:03.059 But Jesus says, 00:09:03.299 --> 00:09:06.279 if it is pointing you anywhere but him, 00:09:06.539 --> 00:09:07.379 watch out! 00:09:07.839 --> 00:09:08.339 Danger! 00:09:08.819 --> 00:09:10.839 Not just not as good, dangerous! 00:09:11.860 --> 00:09:14.419 See, if Jesus is the door, 00:09:15.879 --> 00:09:18.639 then it's not Muhammad or Buddha. 00:09:18.639 --> 00:09:21.259 But equally, 00:09:21.699 --> 00:09:23.559 you probably knew he includes walking an aisle 00:09:31.139 --> 00:09:32.960 or praying a prayer 00:09:32.960 --> 00:09:35.059 or being a pretty good person, 00:09:35.179 --> 00:09:36.319 being nice to other people. 00:09:45.039 --> 00:09:45.500 don't they? 00:09:45.500 --> 00:09:49.759 And if those lists don't point us to Jesus alone, 00:09:49.840 --> 00:09:51.919 we might find ourselves trying to climb in 00:09:51.919 --> 00:09:53.820 the wrong way. 00:09:54.259 --> 00:09:54.860 And further, 00:09:55.039 --> 00:09:57.059 Jesus is especially warning us here 00:09:57.059 --> 00:09:58.940 that if we listen to people 00:09:58.940 --> 00:10:01.159 who urge us to rely on anyone 00:10:01.159 --> 00:10:03.559 or anything other than him, 00:10:03.919 --> 00:10:07.399 we will find that we lose our
