Christ in Greek 00:04:33.160 --> 00:04:36.340 is the word that means anointed one. 00:04:36.439 --> 00:04:38.139 So Christ is a Greek word. 00:04:39.160 --> 00:04:41.680 It comes from the Greek word for anointing, 00:04:41.759 --> 00:04:43.180 which is the word chrio. 00:04:43.759 --> 00:04:46.400 And so in Greek, Christ and anointed, 00:04:46.600 --> 00:04:47.699 it's more or less the same word. 00:04:47.759 --> 00:04:49.120 It's exactly the same word family. 00:04:49.120 --> 00:04:50.819 And you actually see that very clearly in the Bible. 00:04:51.220 --> 00:04:52.680 Let me put up an exactly are we encountering? 00:06:06.800 --> 00:06:11.920 And what is it that is so important about it? 00:06:13.120 --> 00:06:15.920 Well, let's try and think about that together. 00:06:17.860 --> 00:06:21.319 Jesus of Nazareth is known throughout the whole world 00:06:21.319 --> 00:06:23.480 as Jesus Christ. 00:06:24.300 --> 00:06:27.060 And that word Christ is not a surname. 00:06:27.400 --> 00:06:28.319 It's actually a title. 00:06:28.480 --> 00:06:31.340 So we could just as easily say Jesus the Christ. 00:06:31.780 --> 00:06:33.100 And as I said, it's a Greek word. 00:06:33.180 --> 00:06:34.180 It means anointed one. 00:06:34.180 --> 00:06:37.319 The Greek word is the equivalent of the Hebrew word Messiah. 00:06:37.660 --> 00:06:39.639 So you'll hear these words related to Christianity. 00:06:39.780 --> 00:06:41.060 Messiah, Christ. 00:06:41.300 --> 00:06:43.379 All of it means anointed one. 00:06:43.579 --> 00:06:45.220 It's all referring to the same thing. concept of being anointed. 00:06:53.660 --> 00:06:54.600 What does that mean? 00:06:55.399 --> 00:06:56.899 And why is it so important? 00:06:58.040 --> 00:06:59.699 Well, the explanation for it all 00:06:59.699 --> 00:07:01.819 comes in the Old Testament. 00:07:02.340 --> 00:07:04.000 That's where the roots of this lie. 00:07:04.180 --> 00:07:08.379 And being anointed is connected to three key roles 00:07:08.379 --> 00:07:12.019 that appear again and again throughout the Old Testament. 00:07:12.300 --> 00:07:15.939 And these roles are prophet, priest, and king. 00:07:16.439 --> 00:07:18.259 And you see, if you look in the Old Testament, 00:07:18.800 --> 00:07:21.319 that for each of these roles, prophet, priest, and king, 00:07:22.040 --> 00:07:26.300 an individual was anointed for the 00:07:42.480 And yes, sorry, I'm reading it wrong there. 00:07:42.519 --> 00:07:44.279 So you see that there's an anointing of the king 00:07:44.279 --> 00:07:44.980 in the first verse, 00:07:45.099 --> 00:07:46.699 and an anointing of Elisha as the prophet. 00:07:47.039 --> 00:07:48.399 The instructions given to Elijah. 00:07:50.000 --> 00:07:52.019 Priest there, Exodus 40. 00:07:52.399 --> 00:07:54.459 Aaron and his sons, you shall anoint them. 00:07:54.459 --> 00:07:59.099 And then you see Saul being anointed to be king. 00:07:59.359 --> 00:08:01.120 So we see this throughout the Old Testament. 00:08:01.879 --> 00:08:04.919 Anointing is associated with these three roles. 00:08:05.259 --> 00:08:06.159 Prophet, priest, king. 00:08:06.699 --> 00:08:08.879 And each of these was crucial in the life of Israel 00:08:08.879 --> 00:08:09.680 in the Old Testament. 00:08:10.159 --> 00:08:11.259 So what did a prophet do? 00:08:12.099 --> 00:08:14.199 A prophet functioned as God's spokesperson. 00:08:15.419 --> 00:08:18.899 So a messenger who communicated the word of God. 00:08:19.000 --> 00:08:21.579 And often that was to issue warnings. 00:08:21.579 --> 00:08:25.879 And alongside those warnings would come an offer of salvation. 00:08:26.819 --> 00:08:30.839 The priest functioned as the people's representative before God. 00:08:31.399 --> 00:08:32.899 And so they would serve in the temple. 00:08:33.159 --> 00:08:34.159 They'd offer sacrifices. 00:08:34.779 --> 00:08:38.240 They would intercede on behalf of a sinful people. 00:08:39.100 --> 00:08:42.480 And the king functioned as God's vice regent. 00:08:42.819 --> 00:08:45.379 Or to use the imagery that comes up a lot in the Old Testament, 00:08:45.500 --> 00:08:47.460 the king functioned as an under-shepherd. 00:08:48.460 --> 00:08:51.379 Given responsibility, delegated by God, 00:08:51.580 --> 00:08:53.139 to care for the people. 00:08:53.240 --> 00:08:56.180 So a king stood under God, over the people. 00:08:57.040 --> 00:08:59.400 Exercising care and protection. 00:08:59.759 --> 00:09:01.460 So you've got all these things fitting together. 00:09:01.560 --> 00:09:03.080 A prophet spoke from God. 00:09:03.639 --> 00:09:05.280 A priest came to God. 00:09:05.560 --> 00:09:09.580 And a king reigned under God, over the people. 00:09:10.340 --> 00:09:13.080 These three roles were crucial in the Old Testament. 00:09:13.520 --> 00:09:15.860 But the big emphasis of the Old Testament 00:09:15.860 --> 00:09:19.659 is that all three of these failed. 00:09:21.820 --> 00:09:24.300 So the prophet's messages fell on deaf ears. 00:09:24.440 --> 00:09:25.200 The people didn't listen. 00:09:26.240 --> 00:09:29.080 The elaborate sacrificial system of the temple 00:09:29.080 --> 00:09:33.279 was actually never able to take away the people's sins. 00:09:33.279 --> 00:09:36.620 And the king's constantly failed. 00:09:37.740 --> 00:09:39.980 And by the time you reach the end of the Old Testament, 00:09:40.139 --> 00:09:41.799 God has stopped sending prophets. 00:09:42.919 --> 00:09:44.459 The temple has been destroyed. 00:09:46.100 --> 00:09:49.899 And the king has lost all his power. 00:09:50.679 --> 00:09:53.519 And instead, God's people are under the rule 00:09:53.519 --> 00:09:57.299 of foreign empires who have conquered them. 00:09:57.299 --> 00:09:59.879 So the story of the Old Testament, 00:10:00.019 --> 00:10:00.719 always remember this, 00:10:00.779 --> 00:10:01.620 the story of the Old Testament 00:10:01.620 --> 00:10:02.959 is not a story of success. 00:10:03.219 --> 00:10:05.399 It's always a story of failure. 00:10:05.959 --> 00:10:08.219 And it's meant to be a story of failure. 00:10:09.379 --> 00:10:10.939 Because all the time, 00:10:11.359 --> 00:10:12.740 the Old Testament is telling us 00:10:12.740 --> 00:10:14.240 that we need something more. 00:10:15.599 --> 00:10:17.299 That the prophets, the priests, and the kings 00:10:17.299 --> peace, 00:10:55.259 --> 00:10:56.299 and of his government. 00:10:57.000 --> 00:10:59.799 There shall be no end. 00:11:00.600 --> 00:11:01.439 And so the Old Testament 00:11:01.439 --> 00:11:02.139 is
