does and that happened to him. 00:00:25.320 --> 00:00:28.640 And Dwight Schrute is played by the actor Rainn Wilson. 00:00:28.640 --> 00:00:36.659 And Rainn Wilson recently came out with a book this year called Soul Boom, Why We Need 00:00:36.659 --> 00:00:37.799 a Spiritual Revolution. 00:00:38.579 --> 00:00:47.640 And I read it recently, and in the intro, he describes his own spiritual journey from adolescence 00:00:47.640 --> 00:00:48.620 into adulthood. 00:00:48.840 --> 00:00:55.359 Growing up in Seattle in the 1960s and 70s, he says that his childhood was filled with 00:00:55.359 --> 00:00:58.380 two things, art and spirituality. 00:00:59.340 --> 00:01:02.920 His mom was an actress in experimental theater. 00:01:03.359 --> 00:01:08.460 His dad was a painter of abstract art and an says that he grew up with lots of influences of spirituality on his life. 00:01:44.780 --> 00:01:52.620 But despite growing up with lots of spirituality in his life, he, as he became older, he walked level as well in our own spiritual transformation. 00:03:24.080 --> 00:03:33.200 And this insight from Dwight Schrute, also known as Rainn Wilson, lines up very well with our study of Jonah. 00:03:33.840 --> 00:03:40.640 The world needs a spiritual revolution, and we need to experience spiritual transformation. 00:03:40.639 --> 00:03:45.039 We are in a series where we're looking at the book of Jonah. 00:03:45.099 --> 00:03:50.899 And last week, we looked at Jonah chapter 1, where we saw that God calls Jonah, a prophet in northern 00:03:50.899 --> 00:03:54.559 Israel, to go to Nineveh, the capital of the Assyrian Empire. 00:03:55.039 --> 00:04:02.339 But what we see is that for a variety of reasons, Jonah runs from God in direct disobedience to him 00:04:02.340 --> 00:04:10.060 in the complete opposite direction, and he finds himself headed west on a ship to Tarshish across the 00:04:10.060 --> 00:04:10.699 Mediterranean Sea. 00:04:10.780 --> 00:04:14.319 And as he's in the middle of the sea, God sends a storm into his life. 00:04:15.060 --> 00:04:21.139 And it's in the middle of the storm that Jonah learned something about God and has an encounter 00:04:21.139 --> 00:04:22.879 with his mercy and his grace. 00:04:23.600 --> 00:04:26.379 At the beginning of chapter 1, we see Jonah running from God. 00:04:26.379 --> 00:04:34.100 And at the end of chapter 2, which we just read, we see Jonah singing about God's love 00:04:34.100 --> 00:04:35.139 and about his mercy. 00:04:36.360 --> 00:04:40.719 And somewhere in the middle, somewhere between him running and him singing, something happened 00:04:40.719 --> 00:04:41.500 in Jonah's heart. 00:04:42.259 --> 00:04:46.319 He had some sort of experience with God that transformed him. 00:04:47.480 --> going to look at our transformation. 00:06:02.659 --> 00:06:05.519 Jonah's transformation starts with a storm. 00:06:05.519 --> 00:06:10.919 And that's what we looked at last week, that Jonah's story shows us something really important, 00:06:11.099 --> 00:06:19.120 that storms in our life are not always the result of sin and disobedience, but sometimes 00:06:19.120 --> 00:06:19.539 they are. 00:06:20.259 --> 00:06:27.279 In a fallen world, lots of people who love and trust and obey and worship God suffer greatly. 00:06:27.279 --> 00:06:33.299 And it has nothing to do because of their sin or disobedience, but because they live, we 00:06:33.299 --> 00:06:35.539 live in a fallen and broken world. 00:06:36.019 --> 00:06:39.699 But if we are in a place in our lives where we are running from him, if we are living a 00:06:39.699 --> 00:06:45.519 life in direct disobedience to him and to his word, sometimes the most loving and gracious 00:06:45.519 --> 00:06:52.239 thing that God can do in our lives is to send a storm into our lives, to wake us up and 00:06:52.240 --> 00:06:56.180 to help us to see our sin and to help us to see our need for him and his mercy. 00:06:57.220 --> 00:06:58.699 And this is what happens to Jonah. 00:06:59.439 --> 00:07:03.840 God sends a storm into his life, and as we looked at last week, he realizes the storm out 00:07:03.840 --> 00:07:05.019 in the middle of the sea is because of him. 00:07:05.500 --> 00:07:10.879 And so he decides to save the lives of the sailors, that he's going to plunge himself into 00:07:10.879 --> 00:07:12.980 the heart of the sea so the storm can stop. 00:07:13.379 --> 00:07:20.680 And Jonah is headed his way down into the bottom of the sea when God rescues him through a large 00:07:20.680 --> 00:07:21.900 marine creature. 00:07:21.899 --> 00:07:27.099 We don't know if it was a whale or some other really big fish, but he's rescued by a large 00:07:27.099 --> 00:07:27.459 fish. 00:07:28.219 --> 00:07:31.459 And he prays this prayer in Jonah chapter 2 in the belly of the fish. 00:07:31.959 --> 00:07:32.919 Chapter 2, verse 3, 00:07:33.019 --> 00:07:36.459 For you cast me into the deep, into the very heart of the seas. 00:07:37.219 --> 00:07:40.519 In the flood surrounded me all your waves and your billows passed over me. 00:07:41.019 --> 00:07:43.399 The waters closed in over me to take my life. 00:07:43.939 --> 00:07:45.359 The deep surrounded me. 00:07:45.419 --> 00:07:48.439 The weeds were wrapped about my head at the roots of the mountains. 00:07:48.439 --> 00:07:53.199 I went down to the land whose bars closed upon me forever. 00:07:53.199 --> 00:08:09.199 The way that people imagined in the ancient world, the way that people imagined Sheol or the land of the dead is they imagined it as a place that when you entered it, that the bars of the gates locked behind you. 00:08:09.199 --> 00:08:15.740 And so therefore, the land of the dead was not a place that you could escape from or return from. 00:08:15.879 --> 00:08:18.079 And Jonah says, that's where I was going. 00:08:18.180 --> 00:08:18.939 That was where I was headed. 00:08:19.019 --> 00:08:22.279 The bars of the gates were about to lock behind me. 00:08:22.279 --> 00:08:28.799 And similar to Rainn Wilson's story, Jonah is at the lowest point in his life. 00:08:28.859 --> 00:08:31.399 He's at the bottom of the Mediterranean Sea. 00:08:31.539 --> 00:08:33.839 Seaweed is wrapped around his body. 00:08:33.959 --> 00:08:39.620 He knows he's about to die physically, and he also knows spiritually it's the farthest from God he's ever been. 00:08:40.039 --> 00:08:45.000 He's experiencing the natural consequences of his sin and disobedience, separation from God. 00:08:45.000 --> 00:08:51.000 And in that place of great need, Jonah turns to the Lord in prayer. 00:08:51.919 --> 00:08:53.039 In verse 7, he says, 00:08:53.179 --> 00:08:58.759 When my life was fainting away, I remembered the Lord, and my prayer came to you in your holy temple. 00:08:59.679 --> 00:09:05.919 At the literal, spiritual, and physical bottom of his life, Jonah cries out to God. 00:09:06.360 --> 00:09:10.779 And this is a turning point, not only in this story, but in Jonah's life. 00:09:10.779 --> 00:09:16.159 Because in this moment, Jonah realizes that not only is he in need of rescue, 00:09:16.899 --> 00:09:21.279 but that he can't rely on anyone or anything else. 00:09:21.319 --> 00:09:28.199 He can't rely on wealth or status or success, not in being a good religious or moral person. 00:09:28.339 --> 00:09:31.500 He can't rely on his race or nationality or culture. 00:09:32.179 --> 00:09:39.360 That even he, a prophet from Israel, God's prophet, is in need of divine mercy. 00:09:39.360 --> 00:09:45.340 And it's this realization that brings about spiritual renewal in Jonah's heart. 00:09:45.399 --> 00:09:49.500 And we see that renewal happen throughout this prayer in Jonah chapter 2, 00:09:49.539 --> 00:09:52.820 but we see it specifically in verses 8 and 9. 00:09:53.600 --> 00:09:55.279 In verse 8, Jonah prays, 00:09:56.159 --> 00:10:01.919 Those who pay regard to vain idols forsake their hope of steadfast love. 00:10:02.899 --> 00:10:03.720 What's an idol? 00:10:04.700 --> 00:10:06.340 Well, there's a lot that we could say. 00:10:06.340 --> 00:10:12.800 In the ancient world, an idol was often a literal statue that people would bow down 00:10:12.800 --> 00:10:16.879 and worship the God who was represented in the statue. 00:10:18.160 --> 00:10:24.160 But we can also think about an idol as whatever is at the center of our lives, 00:10:24.200 --> 00:10:28.820 whatever we put at the center of our lives as a functional savior, 00:10:29.540 --> 00:10:30.639 as a functional savior. 00:10:30.639 --> 00:10:36.279 A functional savior that gives us meaning, that gives us purpose, that gives us identity, 00:10:36.879 --> 00:10:37.819 that gives us significance. 00:10:39.000 --> 00:10:44.399 And it's also a functional savior that we turn to whenever we realize we're in need of rescue, 00:10:44.960 --> 00:10:48.220 whenever we realize that we are in need of outside help. 00:10:48.240 --> 00:10:52.100 It's whatever we turn to whenever we're trying to find comfort, 00:10:53.100 --> 00:10:55.720 whenever we're trying to find relief, whenever we're trying to find escape, 00:10:56.559 --> 00:10:58.460 wherever we're trying to find a way out. 00:10:58.460 --> 00:10:59.660 That's what an idol is. 00:10:59.680 --> 00:11:00.560 It's a functional savior. 00:11:01.460 --> 00:11:07.259 And Jonah realizes that at the bottom of the sea, he realizes something about idols. 00:11:07.400 --> 00:11:11.840 He says he realizes that his functional savior, his functional saviors, 00:11:12.379 --> 00:11:17.780 can promise him a lot of things, but they rarely ever deliver. 00:11:19.180 --> 00:11:20.780 Idols promise, but they can't deliver. 00:11:21.000 --> 00:11:25.400 We might look to money or a career or success or even a marriage 00:11:25.399 --> 00:11:28.399 to give us a sense of ultimate purpose and meaning. 00:11:29.399 --> 00:11:32.079 We might look to things like food or alcohol 00:11:32.079 --> 00:11:36.559 to help us find a sense of relief or comfort or escape. 00:11:37.319 --> 00:11:41.039 But when you realize that you are at the rock bottom in your life, 00:11:41.079 --> 00:11:43.799 when there is seaweed wrapped around your head, 00:11:44.419 --> 00:11:48.199 you realize those things can't actually rescue you. 00:11:48.200 --> 00:11:54.620 When you're drowning, it doesn't matter how much money is in your bank account 00:11:54.620 --> 00:11:57.040 or what your resume says. 00:11:58.280 --> 00:12:02.080 Idols, like money and success and comfort, are great motivators. 00:12:02.980 --> 00:12:05.500 They can get you to work hard and do lots of things, 00:12:06.040 --> 00:12:08.600 but they're terrible saviors. 00:12:09.560 --> 00:12:10.780 They're terrible saviors. 00:12:10.779 --> 00:12:18.100 Verse 8, Jonah prays, those who pay regard to vain idols forsake their hope of steadfast love. 00:12:18.579 --> 00:12:23.379 Now, this word, steadfast love, is a big word in the Old Testament. 00:12:24.000 --> 00:12:26.000 It's the Hebrew word, hesed. 00:12:26.360 --> 00:12:30.699 And this Hebrew word, hesed, is this rich, multifaceted word 00:12:30.699 --> 00:12:32.279 that we see all over the Old Testament. 00:12:32.819 --> 00:12:34.399 It can refer to a number of things. 00:12:34.480 --> 00:12:39.939 It can refer to acts of kindness towards someone who's in need. 00:12:39.940 --> 00:12:44.580 It can refer to the spousal love between a husband and a wife. 00:12:45.240 --> 00:12:50.000 And both of these things refer to God's covenant love, 00:12:50.360 --> 00:12:54.880 his covenant loyalty to his people and his faithfulness 00:12:54.880 --> 00:12:59.780 to love his people and to keep the promises that he has made to them. 00:12:59.880 --> 00:13:03.080 This is God's steadfast love, his hesed. 00:13:03.920 --> 00:13:07.520 Perhaps one of the best descriptions of God's steadfast love 00:13:07.519 --> 00:13:11.439 comes from the Jesus Storybook Bible by Sally Lloyd-Jones. 00:13:12.019 --> 00:13:13.919 And in the Jesus Storybook Bible, 00:13:14.340 --> 00:13:17.259 she describes God's steadfast love 00:13:17.259 --> 00:13:19.980 as his never stopping, 00:13:20.740 --> 00:13:21.679 never giving up, 00:13:22.419 --> 00:13:22.980 unbreaking, 00:13:23.779 --> 00:13:24.899 always and forever love. 00:13:25.600 --> 00:13:27.079 It's God's never stopping, 00:13:27.220 --> 00:13:27.960 never giving up, 00:13:28.460 --> 00:13:28.939 unbreaking, 00:13:29.759 --> 00:13:32.079 always and forever love. 00:13:32.080 --> 00:13:35.180 It's the kind of love that we all long for 00:13:35.180 --> 00:13:36.960 because it's the kind of love that we were made for. 00:13:38.120 --> 00:13:39.300 And it's at never giving up, 00:14:00.699 --> 00:14:01.199 his unbreaking, 00:14:01.339 --> 00:14:03.980 his always and forever love. 00:14:05.399 --> 00:14:07.519 And Jonah ends his prayer in verse 9 00:14:07.519 --> 00:14:09.740 with a shout of praise. 00:14:10.439 --> 00:14:11.159 And he says, 00:14:11.419 --> 00:14:13.299 salvation belongs to the Lord. 00:14:13.779 --> 00:14:16.139 Salvation belongs to the Lord. 00:14:17.179 --> 00:14:20.919 And this prayer is Jonah's journey of repentance. 00:14:20.919 --> 00:14:21.199 Repentance. 00:14:21.740 --> 00:14:24.500 Repentance involves turning from our sin, 00:14:24.579 --> 00:14:25.360 our disobedience, 00:14:25.519 --> 00:14:28.819 but also turning from our functional saviors 00:14:28.819 --> 00:14:32.179 that we look to to fill our hearts, 00:14:32.240 --> 00:14:34.939 to fulfill the deepest longings of our hearts. 00:14:35.379 --> 00:14:36.500 And so repentance involves 00:14:36.500 --> 00:14:38.360 turning from our functional saviors 00:14:38.360 --> 00:14:40.959 and turning to putting all of our hope 00:14:40.959 --> 00:14:41.759 and all of our trust 00:14:41.759 --> 00:14:44.699 in the steadfast love of the Lord. 00:14:45.099 --> 00:14:47.259 And this is what produces 00:14:47.259 --> 00:14:50.339 spiritual transformation in Jonah's life. 00:14:50.919 --> 00:14:51.639 It's repentance. 00:14:52.559 --> 00:14:54.279 It's not new insights 00:14:54.279 --> 00:14:57.099 about what he can do to find salvation. 00:14:58.479 --> 00:14:59.839 But it's the realization 00:14:59.839 --> 00:15:04.539 that salvation has come and found him. 00:15:05.339 --> 00:15:07.479 That salvation has come and found him. 00:15:07.559 --> 00:15:08.879 And this is the central message 00:15:08.879 --> 00:15:10.199 of the whole Bible. 00:15:10.779 --> 00:15:13.319 That salvation belongs to the Lord. 00:15:13.399 --> 00:15:15.259 That though we have all run from God 00:15:15.259 --> 00:15:17.099 in direct disobedience to him 00:15:17.100 --> 00:15:19.300 and are eternally separated from him, 00:15:20.220 --> 00:15:22.100 that in Jesus Christ, 00:15:22.899 --> 00:15:25.379 God has come running after us down 00:16:41.819 --> 00:16:44.859 to the place of spiritual and literal death. 00:16:45.439 --> 00:16:46.679 And at the bottom, 00:16:46.859 --> 00:16:48.259 he comes to the end of himself. And that's the key 00:17:03.359 --> 00:17:05.500 to Jonah's spiritual transformation. 00:17:05.500 --> 00:17:07.160 And that is the key 00:17:07.160 --> 00:17:09.400 to our spiritual transformation.
