cause them to fall back to some of their old practices, 00:01:12.739 --> 00:01:21.679 possibly pulling them back into sin and out of the salvation that they may not have been part of yet because of that. 00:01:21.679 --> 00:01:36.239 So, he says the main point being Christian love requires that we forego or give up our rights and not to insist on our rights at the expense of others. 00:01:36.239 --> 00:01:41.879 Last week, Sean brought to us chapter 9, a difficult passage for a pastor, 00:01:41.879 --> 00:01:47.939 and that was Paul telling us about how he had a right to get paid from the church, 00:01:47.959 --> 00:01:54.919 or in his preaching of the gospel, he had that right, and yet he intentionally gave that up for the sake of the gospel. 00:01:55.640 --> 00:02:01.379 And then at the end of the chapter, if you remember, he's talking of self-control, practicing self-control. 00:02:01.379 --> 00:02:09.519 So, like an athlete, like someone who is going to the Olympics, there's a focus on the goal. 00:02:09.639 --> 00:02:14.039 There's a specific goal that a runner is to be aiming for. 00:02:14.560 --> 00:02:21.699 So, Paul calls us to run as if we're going for that prize and doing with purpose and not to settle or just to coast through life. 00:02:22.680 --> 00:02:28.659 So, now that brings us to chapter 10 this morning, and it starts out with the word for. 00:02:28.659 --> 00:02:37.379 However, Paul is connecting this passage back to these last two chapters because he's going to be building on the idea of idolatry 00:02:37.379 --> 00:02:40.740 and not falling back into former sins. 00:02:41.879 --> 00:02:48.340 And in thinking of that, there's three points that we're going to be looking at this morning, and we'll go through those. 00:02:48.439 --> 00:02:54.300 But the main idea is that there's blessing and there's strength that we get from following the Lord. 00:02:54.300 --> 00:03:01.340 There's also defeat and death that comes from following idolatry or following after the world. 00:03:02.080 --> 00:03:05.560 So, our first point this morning is past warnings. 00:03:06.060 --> 00:03:11.420 These are some warnings that Paul starts out talking to the church of Corinth about. 00:03:11.419 --> 00:03:15.019 So, if you take a look at verse 1, he says, 00:03:15.199 --> 00:03:23.859 For, because of what I've been talking about, I don't want you to be unaware brothers, translated brethren or brothers and sisters. 00:03:24.419 --> 00:03:28.199 For our fathers were all under the cloud and all passed through the sea, 00:03:28.839 --> 00:03:31.819 and all were baptized into Moses in the cloud and in the sea, 00:03:32.179 --> 00:03:36.759 and all ate the same spiritual food and all drank the same spiritual drink. 00:03:36.759 --> 00:03:41.459 For they drank from the spiritual rock that followed them, and the rock was Christ. 00:03:43.899 --> 00:03:49.280 In these first couple verses, we see Paul laying out this interesting package for us, if you will, 00:03:49.560 --> 00:03:54.219 where he's making a connection back to the Old Testament. 00:03:54.379 --> 00:03:58.159 He's making a connection for the church in Corinth back to the Old Testament, 00:03:58.459 --> 00:04:05.000 and he does that to encourage them and also to show them that they are part of the family of God. 00:04:06.759 --> 00:04:08.919 He's also making that connection for us. 00:04:08.959 --> 00:04:12.179 As we're reading this, we're not just spectators, 00:04:12.620 --> 00:04:17.699 but we're part of the congregation as well that he's speaking to. 00:04:18.620 --> 00:04:20.599 First, he says in verse 1, 00:04:20.680 --> 00:04:23.000 Notice Paul doesn't say, 00:04:23.259 --> 00:04:25.860 It's not his Jewish lineage, 00:04:26.399 --> 00:04:30.060 but it's our Jewish lineage that he's connecting to, 00:04:30.139 --> 00:04:33.060 referring to the Israelites that followed Moses out of Egypt. 00:04:33.659 --> 00:04:35.139 Those were God's chosen people. 00:04:35.139 --> 00:04:38.099 Paul is calling them our fathers, 00:04:38.500 --> 00:04:41.599 highlighting the fact that salvation has come to all who believe in Christ. 00:04:41.699 --> 00:04:45.639 It's not just the special Jewish select group, 00:04:45.680 --> 00:04:48.039 but it's now open to Jews and Gentiles. 00:04:51.680 --> 00:04:53.599 So let's listen to what Paul else, 00:04:53.599 --> 00:04:55.579 what else Paul unpacks for us here. 00:04:55.639 --> 00:04:56.000 He says, 00:04:56.000 --> 00:04:58.860 Our fathers were all under the cloud and all passed through the 00:05:50.819 If you remember, 00:05:51.000 --> 00:05:54.500 manna was the physical food that fed them. 00:05:55.259 --> 00:05:59.700 But we know it didn't come from Whole Foods or Stop and Shop. 00:05:59.840 --> 00:06:02.720 It was given to them supernaturally by God. 00:06:02.939 --> 00:06:04.060 The same with the water. 00:06:04.160 --> 00:06:08.520 The water didn't come to them in bottles that they brought from Egypt, 00:06:08.520 --> 00:06:10.660 but it came from a rock. 00:06:11.980 --> 00:06:15.259 I don't know how many other people have seen water come from a rock, 00:06:15.800 --> 00:06:17.819 but that's a pretty supernatural thing. 00:06:18.540 --> 00:06:22.660 So we're reminded here that that rock that was with them was Christ. 00:06:25.060 --> 00:06:26.180 So we have the Israelites. 00:06:26.439 --> 00:06:27.180 They believed Moses. 00:06:27.300 --> 00:06:28.060 They followed him. 00:06:28.379 --> 00:06:30.180 They're baptized into Moses 00:06:30.180 --> 00:06:33.900 as he takes them through the cloud and through the Red Sea, 00:06:34.400 --> 00:06:36.300 and they're delivered from the Egyptians. 00:06:36.300 --> 00:06:41.980 Christ was that rock that sustained them. 00:06:43.120 --> 00:06:45.079 And now we as believers of Christ, 00:06:45.180 --> 00:06:47.939 we get baptized into him, 00:06:48.220 --> 00:06:50.819 similar to how they were baptized in Moses 00:07:00.079 The Israelites were rescued from Pharaoh in slavery, 00:07:00.079 --> 00:07:01.579 and they were brought across the Red Sea. 00:07:01.680 --> 00:07:03.219 They were delivered from the 00:07:18.799 --> 00:07:20.019 which is past warnings. 00:07:20.019 --> 00:07:24.479 It's what Paul is giving us here, 00:07:25.039 --> 00:07:27.519 is warnings for things that have taken place. 00:07:28.719 --> 00:07:30.039 Now these things took place, 00:07:30.199 --> 00:07:32.500 verse 6, as examples for us, 00:07:33.060 --> 00:07:36.039 that we might not desire evil as they did.
