by the Apostle Paul as he was imprisoned in Rome. 00:00:55.079 --> 00:00:57.759 It's one of the prison epistles in that sense. 00:00:58.239 --> 00:01:05.920 And the audience to whom he is writing were Christians in the very pagan city of Ephesus. 00:01:06.780 --> 00:01:09.739 And you will remember through our readings through the book of Acts, 00:01:09.900 --> 00:01:16.840 Ephesus experienced a tremendous revival as the gospel was brought there through the preaching of Paul and his team. 00:01:16.840 --> 00:01:22.920 About a year and a half, it seems, that Paul stayed in Ephesus discipling these people. 00:01:23.540 --> 00:01:30.000 We see the relationship that he had with the church there as he was on his way to Rome in his imprisonment 00:01:30.000 --> 00:01:35.400 or on his way to Jerusalem, knowing that he would be ultimately arrested there. 00:01:35.960 --> 00:01:40.359 Remember, he stops and he meets with the elders of the Ephesian church. 00:01:40.359 --> 00:01:45.319 It's in Acts chapter 20 and there's such tenderness and intimacy and love. 00:01:45.900 --> 00:01:50.700 There is wonderful relationship between Paul and these Christians. 00:01:50.920 --> 00:01:55.039 And this letter really has two major themes that we would point to. 00:01:55.439 --> 00:01:58.960 Both of them are seen in the passage that we study today. 00:01:58.960 --> 00:02:05.500 The first one is this, that in the gospel, Christ has reconciled us to God. 00:02:05.500 --> 00:02:08.740 That we, by nature, are enemies of God. 00:02:08.860 --> 00:02:13.580 But through Christ and what he has done in the gospel of the cross and of his resurrection, 00:02:13.939 --> 00:02:19.300 he has made us no longer enemies with God, but he has reconciled us to God. 00:02:19.360 --> 00:02:22.659 And you see that all through this letter to the Ephesians. 00:02:23.259 --> 00:02:26.560 And the second major theme is that in the gospel, 00:02:27.379 --> 00:02:34.599 Christ has united people from all nations as his new kingdom people. 00:02:34.599 --> 00:02:36.379 What we call the church. 00:02:37.199 --> 00:02:41.419 So not only has God reconciled, Jesus reconciled us to God as individuals, 00:02:41.599 --> 00:02:46.539 but in reconciling us to God as individuals, he has created a new people. 00:02:46.959 --> 00:02:50.519 The church of God, citizens of the kingdom of God. 00:02:50.560 --> 00:02:54.979 And he has united us who were not only enemies of God, 00:02:55.079 --> 00:02:57.519 but who were also enemies of one another. 00:02:57.699 --> 00:03:00.780 And we see these two themes coming to the surface very quickly 00:03:00.780 --> 00:03:03.120 in these verses that we've just read. 00:03:03.120 --> 00:03:08.680 Now, beginning at chapter 1 and verse 1 through chapter 2 and verse 10, 00:03:09.659 --> 00:03:12.900 Paul beautifully describes God's grace and salvation. 00:03:14.219 --> 00:03:17.099 Beginning in verse 11 of chapter 2, 00:03:17.900 --> 00:03:23.800 he explains that this gospel of grace that unites believers from all nations 00:03:23.800 --> 00:03:27.719 to be a dwelling place for God's spirit. 00:03:27.719 --> 00:03:34.539 Again, we who were once enemies of God are now the very people of God. 00:03:35.340 --> 00:03:40.300 Not separated from him, dead in our sins and in our trespasses, 00:03:40.460 --> 00:03:44.400 but united with him in eternal life. 00:03:44.400 --> 00:03:52.040 And so we begin this series with this passage because before we can ever really understand 00:03:52.040 --> 00:03:54.920 what God has called us to be as the church, 00:03:54.920 --> 00:04:00.680 we must first understand who we are in Christ as the church. 00:04:00.680 --> 00:04:05.200 And at the root of it all is the gospel. 00:04:06.540 --> 00:04:12.680 That Jesus, the perfect son of God, who died on the cross for our sins 00:04:12.680 --> 00:04:16.780 and he rose from the dead to give us life. 00:04:16.960 --> 00:04:18.399 That is the gospel. 00:04:18.899 --> 00:04:21.379 It is the gospel that makes us what we are. 00:04:23.139 --> 00:04:24.860 Jesus makes us what we are. 00:04:24.860 --> 00:04:28.600 And his gospel must be at the forefront of all we do. 00:04:29.240 --> 00:04:35.500 So it makes sense that as we consider what are the things that we care about the most as a church, 00:04:36.020 --> 00:04:38.220 as it relates to our study of the scripture, 00:04:39.040 --> 00:04:43.120 how could we begin anywhere other than a gospel focus? 00:04:43.819 --> 00:04:46.480 The person and the work of Jesus. 00:04:47.080 --> 00:04:51.100 I've divided this particular passage for this time into three sections. 00:04:51.100 --> 00:04:56.240 Three things I think that Paul is communicating to the Ephesians to encourage them. 00:04:56.720 --> 00:05:02.620 Three things that he, by extension, would be encouraging us to do as we think on these things. 00:05:02.860 --> 00:05:03.840 The first thing is this. 00:05:04.439 --> 00:05:06.340 Remember what you were. 00:05:07.420 --> 00:05:09.600 Remember what you were. 00:05:10.680 --> 00:05:11.840 Look at verse 11. 00:05:11.839 --> 00:05:26.679 Remember what you were. 00:05:26.680 --> 00:05:37.939 Undergirding this section is the natural hostility that existed and continues to exist in some cases 00:05:37.939 --> 00:05:40.939 between Jews and non-Jews. 00:05:41.300 --> 00:05:43.139 Jews and Gentiles. 00:05:44.220 --> 00:05:46.899 And you know enough about your Bibles to understand what this was like. 00:05:47.060 --> 00:05:49.819 We saw this in our study of the gospel of Mark. 00:05:49.819 --> 00:05:57.199 There was such hate for the Gentiles in the Jewish nation that Jews traveling from outside of Israel 00:05:57.199 --> 00:06:00.599 back into the proper borders of Israel. 00:06:00.719 --> 00:06:01.819 Remember what they would do. 00:06:02.319 --> 00:06:07.519 They would shake off the dust from their clothes and shake off the dust from their feet 00:06:07.519 --> 00:06:17.819 so as not to let the contaminated Gentile dirt intermingle with the soil of the nation of Israel. 00:06:17.819 --> 00:06:23.259 Israel, that's quite a hatred to take it so far. 00:06:23.319 --> 00:06:27.040 And of course, that was a message that they were sending to those Gentile nations, 00:06:27.180 --> 00:06:29.079 that you are not the people of God. 00:06:29.199 --> 00:06:31.279 And remember, Jesus confronted this. 00:06:31.819 --> 00:06:34.539 He sends his disciples out to the villages and he says, 00:06:34.819 --> 00:06:38.740 anyone who will not receive you, shake off the dust from your feet. 00:06:39.279 --> 00:06:42.759 A message to the Jews that you are not the people of God either, 00:06:42.759 --> 00:06:44.959 so long as you reject the Son. 00:06:44.959 --> 00:06:48.459 The Jews had hate for the Gentiles. 00:06:49.399 --> 00:06:55.979 Some Jews believed and wrote that the Gentiles were the fuel for the fires of hell. 00:06:57.419 --> 00:07:03.919 At times, the portions of their law forbade even assisting a Gentile woman in giving birth 00:07:03.919 --> 00:07:08.579 so that they would not be complicit in bringing another heathen into the world. 00:07:08.579 --> 00:07:17.599 There's hatred, hostility, animosity between these groups. 00:07:18.000 --> 00:07:19.779 The Gentiles weren't innocent in this. 00:07:20.860 --> 00:07:26.620 There was just as much hate for the Jews as there was hate in the Jews. 00:07:26.620 --> 00:07:37.620 And it's against this backdrop that Paul begins to write about how Jesus has united the nations of the world through the gospel. 00:07:39.199 --> 00:07:41.860 And he reminds them of what they used to be. 00:07:42.199 --> 00:07:47.139 He brings to the surface who they were in the eyes of the Jews. 00:07:47.139 --> 00:07:49.819 They had names for you. 00:07:49.879 --> 00:07:50.459 They just called you. 00:07:50.519 --> 00:07:54.659 They identified you based on the fact that you were uncircumcised. 00:07:55.419 --> 00:07:56.979 And he could have taken that much further. 00:07:59.800 --> 00:08:00.979 But then he goes further. 00:08:01.259 --> 00:08:04.740 He reminds the Ephesians, not only did the Jews view this way, 00:08:04.800 --> 00:08:11.139 not only were you at enemies and hostility between you and the Jewish nation, 00:08:11.139 --> 00:08:16.039 but then he reveals to them, reminds them of their true condition before Christ came in. 00:08:16.399 --> 00:08:23.060 Verse 12, remember that you were at that time separated from Christ, 00:08:23.879 --> 00:08:26.079 alienated from the commonwealth of Israel, 00:08:26.599 --> 00:08:31.399 strangers to the covenants of promise, having no hope and without God in the world. 00:08:33.240 --> 00:08:39.120 Now, Paul's not insinuating there that the Jews were saved just by nature of their birth, 00:08:39.120 --> 00:08:45.899 but that they were the blessed people of God to be his conduit of revelation in the world. 00:08:46.980 --> 00:08:49.580 It's not hard to see that that was a blessing to the Jews, 00:08:49.639 --> 00:08:53.320 a blessing they took for granted, but it was a blessing. 00:08:54.019 --> 00:08:59.279 They were near to God in the sense that God had chosen the children of Abraham 00:08:59.279 --> 00:09:02.860 to bring the Messiah, to establish the covenants, 00:09:03.200 --> 00:09:06.259 to reveal himself and his word to the world. 00:09:09.120 --> 00:09:10.399 They had the prophets. 00:09:11.179 --> 00:09:15.080 They had everything that they needed to point them to the truth of God and salvation. 00:09:15.320 --> 00:09:18.200 But that didn't mean they believed God and obeyed the promises. 00:09:18.379 --> 00:09:21.360 It just means that they were blessed in what God had done in their lives. 00:09:22.519 --> 00:09:27.940 On the other hand, the Gentiles were given no revelation from God. 00:09:27.940 --> 00:09:35.480 Before Christ, Paul said they were separated from messianic hope. 00:09:37.100 --> 00:09:40.680 The Jews are given promises of a Messiah who would redeem them. 00:09:40.940 --> 00:09:44.500 The Gentiles have no such messianic hope in their lives. 00:09:45.400 --> 00:09:48.860 Paul says they are alienated from the commonwealth of Israel. 00:09:48.920 --> 00:09:52.100 In other words, they were alienated from the people of God. 00:09:52.480 --> 00:09:56.120 They were on the outsides as far as God's people were concerned. 00:09:56.120 --> 00:10:01.039 He says they were strangers to God's covenant promises. 00:10:01.259 --> 00:10:05.259 They had no promise from God that was given by revelation to them. 00:10:06.700 --> 00:10:08.500 They were without hope. 00:10:09.200 --> 00:10:13.379 And what a miserable place to be, to live without hope. 00:10:14.639 --> 00:10:19.220 And all of that summed up simply, he says, you're without God. 00:10:20.039 --> 00:10:21.159 You're without God. 00:10:21.159 --> 00:10:25.819 The Gentiles weren't just lost. 00:10:26.919 --> 00:10:32.600 They were as far from God and his truth as anybody could possibly be. 00:10:33.639 --> 00:10:37.819 And that's a fitting description of each and every one of us, actually. 00:10:38.759 --> 00:10:41.579 Apart from Jesus, we are without hope. 00:10:42.000 --> 00:10:44.379 We are alienated from God's people. 00:10:44.379 --> 00:10:47.700 And we are without God in this world. 00:10:48.559 --> 00:10:52.980 Which is when Paul begins to echo something he says early on in chapter 2. 00:10:53.059 --> 00:10:53.899 Look at verse 1. 00:10:54.439 --> 00:10:59.200 You were dead in your trespasses and sins in which you once walked. 00:10:59.879 --> 00:11:01.939 Following the course of this world. 00:11:02.399 --> 00:11:04.559 Following the prince of the power of the air. 00:11:04.639 --> 00:11:05.320 That's Satan. 00:11:05.320 --> 00:11:09.740 The spirit that is now at work in the sons of disobedience. 00:11:09.740 --> 00:11:14.740 Among whom we all once lived in the passions of our flesh. 00:11:15.280 --> 00:11:18.260 Carrying out the desires of the body and the mind. 00:11:18.740 --> 00:11:22.800 And were by nature, Paul says, children of wrath. 00:11:23.280 --> 00:11:25.060 Like the rest of mankind. 00:11:26.260 --> 00:11:30.540 And there's no distinction in those first three verses between Jew and Gentile. 00:11:30.600 --> 00:11:32.720 He says we were all the children of wrath. 00:11:32.720 --> 00:11:36.840 We were all sinners destined for the wrath of God in our lives. 00:11:37.960 --> 00:11:39.440 We were without Paul rehearsed. 00:12:16.299 --> 00:12:22.959 Before Paul rehearsed the glories of the body of Christ with the Ephesians. 00:12:23.919 --> 00:12:26.199 I think quite helpfully he says. 00:12:26.439 --> 00:12:29.539 Remember what you were before the gospel ever came in. 00:12:30.339 --> 00:12:33.319 You know, if we're going to understand who we are in Christ. 00:12:33.539 --> 00:12:38.279 Best that we take just a moment and consider what we were before Christ. 00:12:40.419 --> 00:12:41.939 So he says, remember what you were. 00:12:42.079 --> 00:12:44.539 Then he says, I think, is what he's saying here. 00:12:44.620 --> 00:12:46.559 Is rejoice in what you are. 00:12:47.139 --> 00:12:49.000 We can rejoice now in what we are. 00:12:49.000 --> 00:12:53.559 It's helpful to remember what you were before Christ. 00:12:53.639 --> 00:12:59.600 But then Paul quickly turns to address what the Ephesian believers now are because of Christ. 00:13:00.600 --> 00:13:10.019 The at one time of verse 11 is set in contrast with the but now of verse 13. 00:13:10.019 --> 00:13:16.659 In other words, a dramatic transformation had taken place in these Ephesian Christians. 00:13:16.860 --> 00:13:23.779 And it's the same dramatic transformation that has occurred in any of us who have come to know and follow Christ. 00:13:24.019 --> 00:13:25.679 This is what we were. 00:13:25.679 --> 00:13:29.279 But Gentiles couldn't go further than that wall. 00:19:51.700 --> 00:19:57.440 This was the courtyard that the Jews had turned into a marketplace. 00:19:57.700 --> 00:20:00.240 And Jesus came in and drove some of you in the Cold War era and the breaking down of the Berlin Wall. 00:21:45.799 --> 00:21:53.159 Two people then become one as a result of the destruction of this dividing wall of hostility.
