savior of the world, the news that the king of all the earth had been born. 00:02:22.800 --> 00:02:27.840 If it were me, I would probably want to make it as big of a deal as I possibly could, 00:02:28.120 --> 00:02:32.260 spread the news as far and wide as I possibly could, make it a big event, 00:02:32.259 --> 00:02:37.579 make sure to invite all the most important people, all the most popular people, 00:02:37.699 --> 00:02:41.179 all the most well-respected people I could possibly find. 00:02:41.679 --> 00:02:44.560 But God doesn't think like I do. 00:02:45.340 --> 00:02:47.699 And that's not what God did. 00:02:48.579 --> 00:02:52.340 In our passage that was just read from Luke chapter 2, 00:02:53.259 --> 00:02:57.139 we see the events of the birth of Christ described, 00:02:57.139 --> 00:03:04.639 the announcement that was made concerning the birth of the savior of the world. 00:03:05.779 --> 00:03:08.599 Joseph, we're told in Luke chapter 2, verse 4, 00:03:08.699 --> 00:03:14.299 he made the journey from Galilee to Judea to be registered along with his wife, 00:03:14.379 --> 00:03:16.919 who, oh, by the way, was with child. 00:03:17.979 --> 00:03:20.979 And while they were there, the time came for her to give birth, 00:03:21.019 --> 00:03:25.599 and she gave birth to her firstborn son and wrapped him in swaddling clothes 00:03:25.599 --> 00:03:32.099 and laid him in a manger because there was no place for them in the inn. 00:03:32.199 --> 00:03:39.340 This was a humble beginning for any child, much more so for this child. 00:03:40.479 --> 00:03:44.919 You see, right from the very first breaths of Jesus Christ, 00:03:45.039 --> 00:03:47.500 right from this very first entrance into the world, 00:03:47.560 --> 00:03:50.379 we get a glimpse, don't we, 00:04:27.639 --> 00:04:30.660 How would you announce the birth of this king? 00:04:30.759 --> 00:04:35.819 We're told that this birth was not first announced to the richest or to the greatest. 00:04:36.019 --> 00:04:38.759 It wasn't even announced to many people at all. 00:04:38.759 --> 00:04:46.899 Rather, it was announced first to just a few lowly shepherds out in the field, 00:04:47.019 --> 00:04:49.480 keeping watch over their flocks by night. 00:04:49.560 --> 00:04:51.639 Verse 9, it gives us the scene. 00:04:51.759 --> 00:04:51.939 It says, 00:04:52.060 --> 00:04:54.259 An angel of the Lord appeared to them, 00:04:54.319 --> 00:04:56.819 and the glory of the Lord shone around them, 00:04:56.860 --> 00:04:59.399 and they were filled with great fear. 00:04:59.399 --> 00:05:01.560 And the angel said to them, 00:05:01.759 --> 00:05:10.459 Fear not, for behold, I bring you good news of great joy that will be for all the people. 00:05:10.859 --> 00:05:18.560 For unto you is born this day in the city of David a Savior, who is Christ the Lord. 00:05:19.739 --> 00:05:24.279 That, church, in a nutshell, is the gospel. 00:05:24.279 --> 00:05:32.679 That is the message of hope that we have the privilege of believing and bringing out into the world. 00:05:32.799 --> 00:05:37.839 It's good news of great joy for all people. 00:05:38.759 --> 00:05:40.819 And just to drive that point home, 00:05:41.419 --> 00:05:46.619 he brings that news first not to kings, not to rulers, not to the influential, 00:05:46.620 --> 00:05:54.259 but to the lowest and lowliest and makes this good news worthy of this response of great joy? 00:06:23.500 --> 00:06:26.600 And the answer, I believe, is twofold. 00:06:26.819 --> 00:06:32.219 And it's found here in the response of this angelic chorus here in verse 14. 00:06:33.459 --> 00:06:37.879 We're told that the angels, they suddenly burst into this chorus of worship, 00:06:37.879 --> 00:06:42.120 this multitude of the heavenly hosts, is praising God, saying, 00:06:42.480 --> 00:06:51.180 Glory to God in the highest, and on earth peace among those with whom he is pleased. 00:06:52.279 --> 00:06:55.800 Taking that in reverse order here, two reasons. 00:06:55.939 --> 00:07:00.319 The first reason why the birth of Christ is good news for great joy 00:07:00.319 --> 00:07:05.899 is because this birth is the announcement of peace on earth. 00:07:05.899 --> 00:07:10.819 Peace on earth among those with whom he is pleased. 00:07:11.039 --> 00:07:14.699 This birth, the birth of this child, 00:07:15.019 --> 00:07:20.019 is the beginning of the fulfillment of the plan of God 00:07:20.019 --> 00:07:23.799 to reconcile sinners to himself. 00:07:25.079 --> 00:07:29.879 See, this sinless child entered into a world of sin. 00:07:29.879 --> 00:07:36.339 He would step into the place of sinners and live as they should have lived. 00:07:37.219 --> 00:07:43.360 He was born to die in the place of sinners as we deserve to die for our sin. 00:07:43.439 --> 00:07:46.000 He was innocent while we were guilty. 00:07:46.180 --> 00:07:49.319 And because he was innocent, the grave had no hold on him, 00:07:49.360 --> 00:07:53.740 and he would rise from the grave so that any who know him, 00:07:53.740 --> 00:07:58.199 any who trust him, any who worship him, 00:07:58.300 --> 00:08:01.579 can have peace with God. 00:08:02.460 --> 00:08:05.840 As Paul says in Romans chapter 5, he says, 00:08:05.980 --> 00:08:08.360 Since we have been justified by faith, 00:08:08.439 --> 00:08:11.319 that is, undeserving sinners like us, 00:08:11.759 --> 00:08:15.860 unimpressive, nothing in our hands to bring to God, 00:08:15.860 --> 00:08:21.840 declared righteous by simple faith in Christ. 00:08:21.840 --> 00:08:25.020 Since we have been justified by faith in Christ, 00:08:25.139 --> 00:08:31.139 we have peace with God through our Lord Jesus Christ. 00:08:31.240 --> 00:08:36.220 That's good news of great joy for sinners like us. 00:08:37.320 --> 00:08:41.399 And what a gift it is to know that if you are in Christ, 00:08:41.399 --> 00:08:46.659 then between you and God there is no longer distance. 00:08:47.480 family tension, 00:09:19.399 --> 00:09:22.059 a time when we remember those who used to gather 00:09:22.059 --> 00:09:24.539 around the table with us who are no longer there. 00:09:25.439 --> 00:09:27.759 And my prayer for you this season 00:09:27.759 --> 00:09:30.279 is that regardless of your circumstance, 00:09:31.459 --> 00:09:35.299 the God of hope would fill you with all joy and peace 00:09:35.299 --> 00:09:39.960 in believing so that by the power of the Holy Spirit, 00:09:39.960 --> 00:09:42.540 you may abound in hope. 00:09:43.420 --> 00:09:47.139 Christ has come to give It's part of the wonder of Christmas 00:11:01.320 --> 00:11:05.480 that because we couldn't bring ourselves up to God, 00:11:05.600 --> 00:11:09.360 God himself has come down to us. 00:11:10.639 -->
