Could this be the Messiah? They came out of 00:00:52.759 --> 00:01:00.679 the town and made their way towards him. And then down at verse 39, many of the Samaritans from that 00:01:00.679 --> 00:01:08.480 town believed in him because of the women's testimony. He told me everything I've ever done. 00:01:09.019 --> 00:01:17.519 So when the Samaritans came to him, they urged him to stay with them and he stayed two days. And because 00:01:17.519 --> 00:01:26.159 of his words, many more became believers. They said to the women, we no longer believe just because 00:01:26.159 --> 00:01:36.979 of what you said. Now we have heard for ourselves and we know that this man really is the savior of 00:01:36.980 --> 00:01:49.020 the world. Amen. This is God's word. So tonight, as we join together in worship, we are going to 00:01:49.020 --> 00:01:54.640 do something that I hope will be helpful. So we as a church have been looking at what we've been calling 00:01:54.640 --> 00:02:01.900 habits of a healthy church. And in God's providence, very appropriately, tonight we're thinking about 00:02:01.900 --> 00:02:10.000 worship. And so thinking about the fact that a healthy church is one that worships God in spirit 00:02:10.000 --> 00:02:20.360 and in truth. Now let me begin with the statement that all of us and all people everywhere are 00:02:20.360 --> 00:02:31.460 worshipers. I was reminded of this this week. I heard about the story of a former football player in 00:02:31.460 --> 00:02:38.719 England called Gavin Peacock, who has become a minister in the United States. He came back to 00:02:38.719 --> 00:02:47.379 Newcastle. So Newcastle, the north of England. And he was invited to a high school to talk about his faith. 00:02:48.040 --> 00:02:55.460 And he began using words borrowed from Paul from Acts chapter 17. He said, 00:02:55.460 --> 00:03:04.260 young men and women from Newcastle, I can see that you are very religious. For as I walked along your 00:03:04.260 --> 00:03:13.260 streets, I saw a t-shirt bearing this inscription, football is my religion. Newcastle United Football 00:03:13.260 --> 00:03:23.340 Club is my God. Great way to start. It's both funny and profoundly sad, isn't it? But it identifies the 00:03:23.340 --> 00:03:30.379 fact that we all the fact that we all worship. What do we mean by worship. Well, worship is anything we 00:03:30.379 --> 00:03:40.640 build our life around. That could be a video game. That could be technology. That could be our money. 00:03:40.640 --> 00:03:52.860 That could be achievement. We worship any person or object or thing when it drives our emotions. 00:03:53.340 --> 00:04:01.080 When it shapes our thoughts. When it directs our behavior. When we find ourselves saying, 00:04:01.300 --> 00:04:10.280 I couldn't imagine living without. Fill in the blank. We are all worshippers. In Scotland, we have been 00:04:10.280 --> 00:04:19.199 invited as a nation to complete a census so that the government has lots of statistics. Whether a person 00:04:19.199 --> 00:04:30.539 ticks the faith box or whether people tick the no religion box, we are all still worshippers. But the 00:04:30.539 --> 00:04:39.939 vital question then is, who should we worship and how should we worship? And John chapter 4 helps us to 00:04:39.939 --> 00:04:47.579 answer these vital questions. It's an amazing chapter in the Bible and it presents us with an amazing 00:04:47.579 --> 00:04:56.240 Savior. Here we have the Lord Jesus. And this is probably the longest conversation that's recorded in the 00:04:56.240 --> 00:05:02.519 Gospels. But it's a conversation not with a Jewish person. It's with a Samaritan, typically an enemy. 00:05:03.259 --> 00:05:09.979 Not with a man, but with a woman. And not just a woman, but an immoral woman. And what does Jesus do? 00:05:09.980 --> 00:05:21.300 Jesus brings really deep truth, really deep theology, leading this woman to trust in him as the Savior of the 00:05:21.300 --> 00:05:31.000 world. So I hope through this chapter we will discover that true worship is to Jesus because he is truly God. 00:05:31.000 --> 00:05:42.920 And true worship is through Jesus because he is the way to God. So let's begin by thinking about the 00:05:42.920 --> 00:05:51.019 worship question. If you have your Bibles, you'll see that in verses 19 and 20 of John chapter 4, 00:05:51.139 --> 00:05:59.800 we have the worship question. Here is one of the hot topics in their religious society. 00:05:59.800 --> 00:06:09.860 What is the proper location to truly worship God? So you have the Samaritans. They had just the first 00:06:09.860 --> 00:06:17.460 five books of the Bible. And so for them, the place to worship was Mount Gerasene in Deuteronomy 11. 00:06:17.780 --> 00:06:24.780 That was where the blessings of God were called out over the people. In Deuteronomy 27, it became a place 00:06:24.779 --> 00:06:33.099 where worship happened. But if you were a Jew, then Jerusalem was the center of worship. Since the time 00:06:33.099 --> 00:06:40.399 of King David, there was that desire to connect the throne with worship. And then Solomon, of course, 00:06:40.479 --> 00:06:51.399 built the temple in Jerusalem. So this was a really hot topic. Well, look at verse 21 and see the bold, 00:06:51.399 --> 00:07:00.319 dramatic answer of Jesus to the question of where should they worship. Women, believe me, 00:07:00.679 --> 00:07:06.339 a time is coming when you will worship the Father neither on this mountain nor in Jerusalem. 00:07:08.079 --> 00:07:16.979 Jesus is bringing the news that he is about to replace it with something new. Where is this new 00:07:16.980 --> 00:07:25.680 worship center? Where is this new place where we can have access to God? We've already discovered in 00:07:25.680 --> 00:07:35.920 John's gospel, Jesus saying, it's through me. John chapter 2 verse 19. Jesus said to them, 00:07:36.319 --> 00:07:44.840 destroy this temple and I will raise it again in three days. And he explains in verse 21, 00:07:44.839 --> 00:07:53.299 the temple he had spoken of was his body. Jesus has come to replace the temple to fulfill what the 00:07:53.299 --> 00:08:00.519 temple stands for. Here is the place where we meet with God. Not in a building, but in the person of 00:08:00.519 --> 00:08:09.659 Jesus. Jesus as Messiah has taken the place of the temple. When is this going to happen? 00:08:09.660 --> 00:08:21.260 It's here as well. Verse 21, Jesus says, a time is coming or the hour is coming. Now, if you were to 00:08:21.260 --> 00:08:28.120 read through John's gospel, you would see that phrase many times. And in John's gospel, when Jesus 00:08:28.120 --> 00:08:36.279 speaks about the time or the hour, he's speaking about his death and his resurrection and his return 00:08:36.279 --> 00:08:46.980 to glory, taking the throne as king. And Jesus is saying, in those saving events, that is how we can have 00:08:46.980 --> 00:08:54.220 access to God. That is how we can know God. Because of what Jesus has done. 00:08:57.019 --> 00:09:05.120 We can probe the worship question deeper still. There's a question that Jesus asks. Let's call it 00:09:05.120 --> 00:09:14.200 the husband question. Verse 16. He told her, go, call your husband and come back. And so we need to ask 00:09:14.200 --> 00:09:23.220 ourselves, why does Jesus ask that question? What is he hoping to reveal as he asks that question? 00:09:24.720 --> 00:09:30.700 And I think here Jesus is probing to help the women to see her longing. 00:09:30.700 --> 00:09:39.520 She seems to be someone who is longing for security. She has had five husbands. Now she's living with 00:09:39.520 --> 00:09:47.080 another man. It could be that she is longing to find her meaning and her identity in a particular 00:09:47.080 --> 00:09:56.360 relationship. So we can say this woman clearly is a worshiper, but she has chosen the wrong object of 00:09:56.360 --> 00:10:04.560 worship. Choosing another person rather than the living God. Now there's a wonderful little phrase 00:10:04.560 --> 00:10:14.980 in John chapter 4 verse 4, where we read, now Jesus had to go through Samaria, or Jesus must go through 00:10:14.980 --> 00:10:22.320 Samaria. And that's not John saying there was only one road, there was only one way that Jesus had to go. 00:10:22.320 --> 00:10:30.600 He had to go through Samaria. This is God's plan for Jesus. That he would come to this well at this 00:10:30.600 --> 00:10:37.879 point to meet this woman, to show her her sin, to reveal her need, and to bring her the love of God and 00:10:37.879 --> 00:10:46.140 the hope of God. That was his plan. The Father's plan, the Father's timing. To show her the longing in her 00:10:46.139 --> 00:10:55.580 heart that just wasn't being met. And to show that he can meet it. Now how does he do that? He does that, 00:10:55.639 --> 00:11:00.360 we can talk about the water question. So we've had the location question, the husband question. There's a 00:11:00.360 --> 00:11:08.879 water question that begins in verse 7. Here is Jesus, fully God and fully human, sitting at a well in the 00:11:08.879 --> 00:11:15.519 heat of the heat of the day, and he asks because he is thirsty, will you give me a drink? But as the 00:11:15.519 --> 00:11:23.159 conversation moves on, he goes from his own thirst, to her thirst and her longing, to then show that 00:11:23.159 --> 00:11:30.139 Jesus is the answer to that longing. And he does that, because he speaks of himself as the one who brings 00:11:30.139 --> 00:11:38.740 living water. Verse 10. If you knew the gift of God and who it is that asks you for a drink, 00:11:39.480 --> 00:11:47.980 you would have asked him and he would have given you living water. That's a wonderful phrase. 00:11:47.980 --> 00:11:57.620 The Old Testament prophets spoke about living water. In Jeremiah 2, God uses that image of himself 00:11:57.620 --> 00:12:04.980 to speak of the goodness and the grace that he would have provided for his people, but his people chose to 00:12:04.980 --> 00:12:16.700 follow idols, broken cisterns. Ezekiel chapter 36, there is the image of this water that washes sin. 00:12:17.840 --> 00:12:27.279 In Ezekiel 47, there's this wonderful picture of water flowing out from the temple and bringing life as it goes. 00:12:27.620 --> 00:12:38.820 Jesus comes bringing life from God. And so this whole conversation is in one sense Jesus saying to the 00:12:38.820 --> 00:12:49.879 women, you are worshipping, but your God is too small. You have been and you will be disappointed. 00:12:49.879 --> 00:12:57.480 Come to me. Come to me. Come to me and be satisfied. Come to me and find eternal life. 00:12:59.879 --> 00:13:08.960 This conversation reminds us that true worship is to Jesus because he is God and he gives eternal life. 00:13:09.500 --> 00:13:17.139 And true worship is through Jesus because he gives access to God and he sends the Spirit. 00:13:17.139 --> 00:13:28.559 Just before we move on, it's really good for us to be able to learn from Jesus here in the sense that we have 00:13:28.559 --> 00:13:39.000 a model in this conversation. What do we see Jesus doing? We see Jesus pulling down cultural barriers. 00:13:39.000 --> 00:13:44.379 speaking to a Samaritan, speaking to a Samaritan, speaking to a woman, speaking to someone known 00:13:44.379 --> 00:13:52.379 for being a sinner. Why? Because of his desire to share good news. Because he wanted to show the love 00:13:52.379 --> 00:13:59.659 of God to this woman. And isn't that something that we have so many opportunities to do here in our city? 00:13:59.779 --> 00:14:05.200 21st century Edinburgh, as Keith was already praying, we're a multicultural city. 00:14:05.200 --> 00:14:11.200 And we too have this invitation to cross barriers to share good news. 00:14:13.540 --> 00:14:17.320 But you know, it's good for us as well to learn from this woman.
