I'd rather die than obey God. 00:01:00.140 --> 00:01:01.560 He's thrown into the water. 00:01:01.700 --> 00:01:03.700 He's crashing, waves crashing over him. 00:01:03.760 --> 00:01:05.099 He's sinking, sinking, sinking. 00:01:05.340 --> 00:01:07.460 And he cries out to God, God save me. 00:01:07.599 --> 00:01:11.719 And God sends a fish that swallows him and saves him from drowning. 00:01:12.659 --> 00:01:14.819 Jonah spends three days in the belly of this fish, 00:01:14.819 --> 00:01:18.840 and he is praying to God, thanking God for saving his life. 00:01:19.240 --> 00:01:21.520 And three days later, God commands the fish. 00:01:21.519 --> 00:01:26.099 It spits Jonah out onto the dry land, and God again says, Jonah, go to Nineveh. 00:01:26.539 --> 00:01:29.140 This time, Jonah figures, maybe I should obey. 00:01:29.719 --> 00:01:31.019 He heads over to Nineveh. 00:01:31.259 --> 00:01:35.560 He starts telling the people of Nineveh, 40 days, and your city is going to be destroyed. 00:01:35.920 --> 00:01:37.899 And the city of Nineveh says, uh-oh. 00:01:38.959 --> 00:01:40.359 And they start repenting. 00:01:40.439 --> 00:01:40.879 They turn. 00:01:41.319 --> 00:01:43.679 They start crying out to God to save them. 00:01:43.680 --> 00:01:47.040 And God does. 00:01:47.200 --> 00:01:48.780 He relents from his plan. 00:01:49.120 --> 00:01:53.840 He changes his plan and says, I'm not going to destroy Nineveh anymore. 00:01:54.340 --> 00:01:55.800 And that's where we left it last week. 00:01:56.160 --> 00:01:58.620 God has decided he will not destroy Nineveh. 00:01:59.840 --> 00:02:03.380 Today, we pick up the story with Jonah's response to that. 00:02:03.440 --> 00:02:06.100 And we're going to see Jonah has a misplaced anger. 00:02:06.900 --> 00:02:08.560 He has a misplaced love. 00:02:08.560 --> 00:02:12.300 And that God contrasts that with his perfect love. 00:02:13.840 --> 00:02:15.800 First, Jonah's misplaced anger. 00:02:16.620 --> 00:02:23.719 When Jonah sees God's forgiveness towards the city of Nineveh, it says that he becomes exceedingly angry. 00:02:25.420 --> 00:02:28.240 Jonah has just been used by God to save an entire city. 00:02:29.520 --> 00:02:31.020 And he's angry about it. 00:02:32.039 --> 00:02:35.840 He looks at God, and he says, how could you do this? 00:02:36.700 --> 00:02:39.259 You're supposed to be our God, the Israelites' God. 00:02:39.800 --> 00:02:40.960 Not the Ninevites' God. 00:02:41.360 --> 00:02:41.840 Our God. 00:02:42.860 --> 00:02:43.939 And yet you forgive them. 00:02:45.199 --> 00:02:48.560 And we see that what happened with Jonah is that he had a lot of national pride. 00:02:48.879 --> 00:02:49.980 He loved his country. 00:02:50.080 --> 00:02:50.860 He loved his homeland. 00:02:51.020 --> 00:02:52.800 He was an Israelite to the core. 00:02:54.000 --> 00:02:58.319 But his love of a good thing, his love of his nation, had warped itself into an idol in his life. 00:02:59.020 --> 00:03:05.400 He had taken his love of his nation, which was a good thing, and elevated it above his love for God in his life. 00:03:05.400 --> 00:03:10.280 He had made it into what we would call an idol, something that takes God's place in our hearts. 00:03:10.620 --> 00:03:16.439 And because Jonah had developed this idol in his heart, it turned him into a racist. 00:03:17.000 --> 00:03:25.400 It turned him into someone who would rather see an entire city of people die than see them turn to God and be saved from their evil ways. 00:03:25.400 --> 00:03:37.379 And Jonah, because his view of the world and of God was so twisted by this idolatry, he actually becomes angry at God for saving the city. 00:03:37.379 --> 00:03:42.900 If you look at his response in verse 2 here, he prays to the Lord and he says, 00:03:43.000 --> 00:03:46.439 Oh Lord, isn't this what I said would happen when I was still in my country? 00:03:47.280 --> 00:03:49.019 That's why I ran away to Tarshish. 00:03:49.219 --> 00:03:55.219 Because I knew that you're a gracious God and merciful, slow to anger and abounding in steadfast love and relenting from disaster. 00:03:55.219 --> 00:04:00.780 You would think after God uses Jonah to save an entire city, Jonah would be like, 00:04:00.859 --> 00:04:02.340 Okay, God, you're right. 00:04:02.439 --> 00:04:04.460 Should have listened to you the first time, but that's not what happened. 00:04:05.439 --> 00:04:08.500 Jonah looks at God and he says, See, this is why I ran away in the first place. 00:04:09.020 --> 00:04:10.340 I knew you'd do this. 00:04:11.500 --> 00:04:14.599 I knew you would save these guys and I didn't want that to happen. 00:04:15.560 --> 00:04:16.420 That's why I ran. 00:04:16.420 --> 00:04:25.780 He says, Look, I knew that you're this gracious God, that you're merciful, that you're slow to anger, that you're abounding in steadfast love, that you relent from disaster. 00:04:26.120 --> 00:04:29.740 I knew these things about you and that's why I didn't want to go in the first place. 00:04:30.980 --> 00:04:35.160 But here's how twisted Jonah's view of the world has become by his idolatry. 00:04:35.960 --> 00:04:43.240 The only reason Jonah is alive right now and able to have this conversation with God is because God is a gracious God. 00:04:44.060 --> 00:04:45.560 Because God is merciful. 00:04:45.560 --> 00:04:50.100 Because God is slow to anger and abounding in steadfast love and relenting from disaster. 00:04:50.300 --> 00:04:51.100 Because you know what? 00:04:51.220 --> 00:04:54.139 Jonah deserved destruction just like the Ninevites did. 00:04:55.139 --> 00:04:59.379 When Jonah ran away from God, he deserved destruction. 00:05:00.480 --> 00:05:03.579 When Jonah was thrown into the sea, he deserved to drown. 00:05:04.340 --> 00:05:05.920 And yet, God was merciful. 00:05:07.259 --> 00:05:08.060 God was gracious. 00:05:09.100 --> 00:05:10.360 God relented from disaster. 00:05:10.560 --> 00:05:12.740 God showed Jonah steadfast love. 00:05:13.259 --> 00:05:15.199 And God saved Jonah's life. 00:05:16.560 --> 00:05:23.240 These traits of God that Jonah lists off here that he knows so well are the reason that he's alive. 00:05:23.360 --> 00:05:25.560 And yet, he despises God because of them. 00:05:26.879 --> 00:05:32.079 Jonah has this excellent theological understanding of God, but this terrible application of it to his life. 00:05:32.079 --> 00:05:33.079 Jonah is a good idea. 00:05:33.079 --> 00:05:40.560 The Bible again and again tells us that God's forgiveness of us, that God's love for us, is meant to inspire us to love him and love others. 00:05:41.519 --> 00:05:43.859 Jonah understands the fact that God is loving and forgiving. 00:05:43.860 --> 00:05:49.080 But he hates the world around him despite that fact. 00:05:49.080 --> 00:05:56.480 Jonah's entire view of reality and understanding of the world is completely twisted by idols. 00:05:56.480 --> 00:06:10.759 And what we see from this is that when we take desires, even if they're good ones, and we let them take God's place in our lives, we set ourselves up for disappointment, failure, and anger, especially at God. 00:06:11.759 --> 00:06:11.980 Right? 00:06:12.060 --> 00:06:14.740 Jonah here, he's not just upset that Nineveh has been saved. 00:06:14.740 --> 00:06:19.160 He's directly upset with God for having saved Nineveh. 00:06:19.900 --> 00:06:21.600 It's not just, oh, I'm angry. 00:06:21.740 --> 00:06:23.280 It's, God, I am angry at you. 00:06:23.360 --> 00:06:24.900 How could you do this? 00:06:27.259 --> 00:06:30.740 Jonah's lost all perspective of the world and what's right and wrong. 00:06:30.900 --> 00:06:33.680 And the thing is, this is so easy for us to do in our lives too. 00:06:35.379 --> 00:06:41.500 It's so easy to take something, a good thing, other than God, and set it up in our lives as the ultimate thing. 00:06:41.500 --> 00:06:43.959 And here's one way I've seen it play out in the church. 00:06:44.860 --> 00:06:50.959 People take the idea of having a spouse and they set it up as the ultimate thing in life. 00:06:51.060 --> 00:06:52.560 I want to get married. 00:06:53.860 --> 00:06:55.939 When I get married, life will be perfect. 00:06:57.519 --> 00:07:02.000 And they've been fed this idea that there's this perfect soulmate out there for them. 00:07:02.759 --> 00:07:05.220 And so they spend their lives looking for this person. 00:07:05.300 --> 00:07:06.639 And one of two things can happen. 00:07:06.639 --> 00:07:12.740 One, they believe, oh, there's this perfect person out there for me. 00:07:13.180 --> 00:07:20.560 And they set their standards so high searching for perfection because they need a spouse and they need it to be the perfect person 00:07:20.560 --> 00:07:24.219 that they look for someone continually who doesn't exist. 00:07:24.979 --> 00:07:27.939 And then they reach this age where they're like, God, I should have been married by now. 00:07:28.000 --> 00:07:28.479 What are you doing? 00:07:28.480 --> 00:07:35.620 And they get angry at God because they feel that God's robbing them of this spouse that's actually essential to their identity. 00:07:36.240 --> 00:07:38.939 When in reality, they've built their identity around the wrong thing. 00:07:39.600 --> 00:07:44.280 Or maybe they go out there and they find someone and they're like, this is the perfect person for me. 00:07:45.020 --> 00:07:48.379 And then they get married and realize that person's not actually perfect. 00:07:49.420 --> 00:07:53.240 And life gets difficult having to deal with the imperfections of each other. 00:07:53.240 --> 00:07:57.639 And then they look at God and they're like, God, this was supposed to be the perfect person for me. 00:07:57.699 --> 00:07:58.480 What are you doing? 00:07:59.960 --> 00:08:05.139 And again, it's something where they've taken this expectation, this idea of a spouse, 00:08:05.220 --> 00:08:11.939 and they've put it above their desire for God and expected that God owes them this perfect marriage, this perfect spouse. 00:08:12.160 --> 00:08:17.560 And when they don't get it, when their idol fails them, they get angry and disappointed with God. 00:08:17.560 --> 00:08:23.280 Another thing that I see in the church sometimes is people want career success. 00:08:23.680 --> 00:08:24.300 It's a good thing. 00:08:24.360 --> 00:08:28.980 It's good to be successful at your career, to be good at your job, and to be recognized for that. 00:08:30.220 --> 00:08:37.259 But I've seen so many people who they spend their lives investing in their career over and over and over. 00:08:37.379 --> 00:08:39.620 They put it above their relationship with God. 00:08:39.700 --> 00:08:41.779 They put it above involvement in church. 00:08:42.740 --> 00:08:43.980 We've got to work the extra hours. 00:08:44.120 --> 00:08:46.259 Got to get that extra project finished. 00:08:46.259 --> 00:08:47.919 Got to have the boss recognize me. 00:08:48.139 --> 00:08:52.659 And the day comes when they're in line for the big promotion, and they don't get it. 00:08:54.259 --> 00:08:56.220 Or the day comes where they're laid off. 00:08:57.379 --> 00:09:02.480 And all of a sudden, this thing that they've built their identity around for years and years and years is gone. 00:09:04.720 --> 00:09:06.200 Their idol has failed them. 00:09:07.539 --> 00:09:12.700 And when we put our hopes in things other than God, when we set our hopes in idols, 00:09:12.700 --> 00:09:19.360 we set ourselves up for disappointment, for failure, for anger, especially at God. 00:09:20.000 --> 00:09:24.140 And you can fill in the blank with any other good thing that we make ultimate in our lives. 00:09:24.300 --> 00:09:31.140 When we take something other than God and expect it to give us ultimate joy, ultimate peace, ultimate fulfillment, 00:09:31.379 --> 00:09:34.620 we set ourselves up for disappointment, failure, and anger. 00:09:34.620 --> 00:09:37.560 With Jonah, his anger is extreme. 00:09:38.720 --> 00:09:40.580 Jonah looks at God, and he says, 00:09:41.060 --> 00:09:45.200 Actually, God, because you saved Nineveh, it's better for me to die than to live. 00:09:46.340 --> 00:09:49.740 He jumps from, I'm angry at you, to kill me now, God. 00:09:51.500 --> 00:09:57.060 Which is really ironic, because just two chapters earlier, he had been praying to God, save me, I'm about to die. 00:09:57.059 --> 00:09:58.939 And now he says, God, just kill me. 00:09:59.399 --> 00:10:00.479 I'm tired of living. 00:10:01.419 --> 00:10:01.599 Right? 00:10:02.239 --> 00:10:05.539 And God has every right right here to step in and say, 00:10:05.659 --> 00:10:06.399 Jonah, who are you? 00:10:06.459 --> 00:10:07.000 What are you doing? 00:10:07.059 --> 00:10:08.379 You have no right to talk to me this way. 00:10:08.439 --> 00:10:09.579 But that's not what God does. 00:10:11.079 --> 00:10:13.019 God, like a friend, just steps in and says, 00:10:13.099 --> 00:10:15.799 Jonah, is it right for you to be angry right now? 00:10:16.959 --> 00:10:17.819 Take a step back. 00:10:17.899 --> 00:10:19.359 that happens is Jonah leaves the city, goes outside, and waits to watch what's going to happen to the city. 00:10:29.680 --> 00:10:32.139 I don't know, maybe he thinks God's going to change his mind 00:10:46.379 --> 00:10:50.100 And right now, we're about to see Jonah's misplaced love develop. 00:10:50.100 --> 00:10:56.620 Because as he sits out there in the sun, God decides to send a plant. 00:11:10.000 And something interesting happens here. 00:11:10.100 --> 00:11:16.100 When the plant grows, it's the first time in the entire book of Jonah that we see that Jonah is actually glad about something. 00:11:16.100 --> 00:11:20.120 He was thrown overboard, on the verge of drowning. 00:11:20.320 --> 00:11:24.240 God saved his life, and he was thankful, but it doesn't say anything about him being glad. 00:11:26.060 --> 00:11:30.720 He got a second chance at obedience to God, and he obeyed God, but he was not glad. 00:11:31.720 --> 00:11:37.320 God used him to convert an entire city and get them to turn away from their evil and repent. 00:11:37.320 --> 00:11:43.220 And he was actually exceedingly angry, the exact opposite emotion that he feels when this plant grows. 00:11:44.440 --> 00:11:51.300 And this plant is the first thing in the entire book of Jonah that causes Jonah to actually be happy or glad. 00:11:52.879 --> 00:11:55.940 And disaster is around the corner, and Jonah degrees Celsius. 00:12:15.440 --> 00:12:21.420 So Jonah's in the middle of the hot desert, and then it gets hotter and drier. 00:12:21.700 --> 00:12:25.639 And he's out there in the sun with no plant no umbrella to hold over him to keep himself cool. 00:13:21.699 --> 00:13:25.639 He's in the exposed sun in the middle of the desert. 00:13:26.059 --> 00:13:31.259 His shade has been torn away from him, and he's stranded. 00:13:32.279 --> 00:13:34.319 He is not happy. 00:13:34.699 --> 00:13:43.839 But what we see is that this destruction of the plant and this sending of the wind is actually a work of God's mercy on Jonah's life. 00:13:43.840 --> 00:13:45.680 It's interesting. 00:13:45.860 --> 00:13:49.180 At this point with the plant, we see a transition in the book of Jonah. 00:13:50.120 --> 00:13:54.960 In the Hebrew scriptures, there's actually two different words that will be used to refer to God. 00:13:55.060 --> 00:13:57.600 One is translated Lord in our English translation. 00:13:58.000 --> 00:13:59.100 One is translated God. 00:13:59.800 --> 00:14:03.680 Lord is the covenant name that the Israelites had with God, 00:14:03.780 --> 00:14:07.060 and it was usually used for the Israelites with their interactions with God, 00:14:07.059 --> 00:14:13.539 where God was used for more general use of God, maybe interaction with the Gentiles. 00:14:13.599 --> 00:14:16.500 And you see this over and over again in the book of Jonah up to this point. 00:14:17.059 --> 00:14:19.839 At the start of the book, the Lord calls Jonah to go to Nineveh. 00:14:20.219 --> 00:14:21.799 Jonah runs away from the Lord. 00:14:22.099 --> 00:14:23.199 The Lord sends a storm. 00:14:23.579 --> 00:14:26.339 Jonah tells the sailors that he's running away from the Lord. 00:14:26.779 --> 00:14:29.039 The Lord appoints a fish to swallow Jonah. 00:14:29.399 --> 00:14:32.539 Again, the Lord calls Jonah to go to Nineveh. 00:14:32.539 --> 00:14:34.919 The Lord tells the fish to vomit Jonah onto the land. 00:14:34.919 --> 00:14:37.740 At all of Jonah's interactions with God up to this point, 00:14:37.879 --> 00:14:39.759 it says the Lord is doing these things. 00:14:40.839 --> 00:14:45.199 And the word God is used primarily up to this point in the book of Jonah 00:14:45.199 --> 00:14:48.179 for God's interactions with Nineveh. 00:14:49.240 --> 00:14:50.599 Nineveh believes God. 00:14:52.059 --> 00:14:54.919 Nineveh repents and calls out to God. 00:14:55.799 --> 00:14:57.740 God hears the Ninevites when they repent. 00:14:58.120 --> 00:15:00.839 And God decides to save the city of Nineveh. 00:15:01.099 --> 00:15:04.779 And as the plant grows, we see a transition happen here. 00:15:04.919 --> 00:15:11.120 Where God's interaction with Jonah begins to be marked by the use of the word God instead of Lord. 00:15:11.699 --> 00:15:15.479 Basically, what's happening here is Jonah is being put into the Ninevites' shoes. 00:15:16.319 --> 00:15:21.679 Jonah is being treated as a pagan because of his constant rebellion and complaining against God. 00:15:22.559 --> 00:15:27.740 God's taking a chance for Jonah to see what's going on in the world around him. 00:15:27.740 --> 00:15:32.639 He's getting a chance to experience the destruction that was foretold for the Ninevites. 00:15:32.779 --> 00:15:34.519 It's a plant for him, not a city. 00:15:34.720 --> 00:15:38.799 But he's experiencing this destruction because of his rebellion against God. 00:15:38.799 --> 00:15:46.699 And it's interesting to see that Jonah has lost out, missed out on his relationship with God, 00:15:47.259 --> 00:15:50.399 despite a lifetime of service and obedience to God. 00:15:52.899 --> 00:15:58.559 Jonah has spent his entire life sending messages from God to the people. 00:16:00.459 --> 00:16:05.079 Jonah has spent his entire life working for God. 00:16:05.080 --> 00:16:12.480 And yet Jonah's missed out on the most important thing, his own personal relationship with God. 00:16:13.220 --> 00:16:15.900 He's sort of like the older brother in the story of the prodigal son, 00:16:16.020 --> 00:16:20.240 who constantly obeys the father, constantly does everything perfectly right, 00:16:20.639 --> 00:16:24.720 but not for a love of the father just because he wants the inheritance once the father's gone. 00:16:24.720 --> 00:16:29.399 And so Jonah's stranded in the middle of the desert. 00:16:30.340 --> 00:16:34.460 He feels that God owes it to him to destroy the city of Nineveh 00:16:34.460 --> 00:16:38.840 because he has been obedient and finally delivered the message, and they're his enemies. 00:16:40.180 --> 00:16:46.139 And again, Jonah shows us the danger of loving things other than God as ultimate in our lives. 00:16:48.000 --> 00:16:52.340 Jonah loved the plant more than anything else in his life at that point. 00:16:52.340 --> 00:16:55.560 He had turned the plant into an idol. 00:16:56.759 --> 00:17:01.180 But there's multiple levels of idolatry going on in Jonah's heart right now. 00:17:02.320 --> 00:17:07.120 Because I think there are ways that God could have taken away the plant that wouldn't have led to Jonah natural state as humans to search for something to define ourselves by. 00:24:12.100 --> 00:24:16.100 But Jonah shows us that everything we define ourselves by other than God 00:24:16.100 -->
