we're in chapter 2 this morning. 00:00:15.359 --> 00:00:19.960 And we're looking at the first seven verses of chapter 2 here this morning. 00:00:20.440 --> 00:00:24.000 Let me just read it for us and then we'll dive straight into things here. 00:00:24.000 --> 00:00:30.259 So Paul's writing to Timothy and he says, 00:00:54.000 --> 00:01:01.259 No one serving as a soldier gets entangled in civilian affairs, but rather tries to please his commanding officer. 00:01:02.640 --> 00:01:10.799 Similarly, anyone who competes as an athlete does not receive the victor's crown except by competing according to the rules. 00:01:12.060 --> 00:01:17.140 The hardworking farmer should be the first to receive a share of the crops. 00:01:18.400 --> 00:01:23.920 Reflect on what I'm saying, for the Lord will give you insight into all this. 00:01:24.000 --> 00:01:29.700 So the Apostle Paul is continuing to give instruction to the younger Timothy. 00:01:30.719 --> 00:01:37.299 And we see here this morning that there are four imperatives, four commands, four instructions. 00:01:38.079 --> 00:01:41.180 And we're just going to work our way through these things one at a time. 00:01:41.640 --> 00:01:45.780 And the first one we find is right up at the top in verse 1. 00:01:45.780 --> 00:01:47.000 Paul says, 00:01:47.000 --> 00:02:01.819 Now why does Paul say this? 00:02:03.719 --> 00:02:05.960 What does Timothy need strength for? 00:02:05.959 --> 00:02:13.419 Well, Paul has just finished giving examples of other believers in the previous verses. 00:02:14.099 --> 00:02:18.240 Some who have turned their backs on him and are ashamed of his chains. 00:02:19.459 --> 00:02:26.699 And the example of one man in his household who has stayed true to Paul and to the Lord. 00:02:26.699 --> 00:02:28.319 Onesiphorus. 00:02:29.699 --> 00:02:32.780 All of this is with persecution going on. 00:02:33.599 --> 00:02:40.439 And we noticed a couple weeks ago that both of these are examples of men that Timothy knows right there from his own province. 00:02:41.399 --> 00:02:42.419 His own region. 00:02:42.419 --> 00:02:51.779 So Timothy and the household of Onesiphorus, they're living in the midst of a province where the majority of Christians have turned their backs on Paul. 00:02:53.519 --> 00:03:00.560 And Paul has been writing to Timothy up until this point in this letter, urging him not to give in to fear. 00:03:01.379 --> 00:03:04.819 Not to let his spiritual gift go unused. 00:03:04.819 --> 00:03:08.419 He's been urging Timothy not to be ashamed of the gospel. 00:03:10.459 --> 00:03:13.120 And then he gave these examples of these men. 00:03:13.819 --> 00:03:15.199 Some have turned away. 00:03:16.699 --> 00:03:20.199 And the household of Onesiphorus, which has stayed true. 00:03:20.739 --> 00:03:23.439 And so this is what Timothy needs strength for. 00:03:24.680 --> 00:03:29.359 You, therefore, my son, be strong in the grace that is in Christ Jesus. 00:03:29.900 --> 00:03:32.539 Be strengthening from God to keep going while the majority of the Christians in the province are floundering in their faith. 00:03:54.099 --> 00:03:57.639 Paul's reminding Timothy here that even though things are really difficult, 00:03:58.659 --> 00:04:00.699 Timothy, you're not alone. 00:04:00.699 --> 00:04:05.839 It's not just up to you and your own resources and your own strength. 00:04:06.239 --> 00:04:07.259 There is strength. 00:04:07.519 --> 00:04:08.419 There is power. 00:04:08.579 --> 00:04:09.839 There is help to be found. 00:04:11.479 --> 00:04:15.019 And it's look to heaven, Timothy. 00:04:16.620 --> 00:04:17.680 That's where you'll find it. 00:04:17.740 --> 00:04:22.759 Be strengthened in the grace of God that is in Christ Jesus. 00:04:23.519 --> 00:04:24.319 Look to him. 00:04:24.959 --> 00:04:25.899 Well, what is grace? 00:04:27.079 --> 00:04:33.360 Grace, by definition, is that unmerited goodness or favor of God. 00:04:34.199 --> 00:04:37.139 And we notice here that Paul is not so specific about this. 00:04:37.199 --> 00:04:40.879 He just says, be strong in the grace that is in Christ Jesus. 00:04:40.879 --> 00:04:45.079 And so Timothy might be thinking, well, what grace is that? 00:04:46.980 --> 00:04:48.819 We might be thinking the same thing. 00:04:50.579 --> 00:04:53.120 What is the grace that is in Christ Jesus? 00:04:55.360 --> 00:04:58.699 And as I was thinking about that this week, I thought, maybe that's the point. 00:04:58.699 --> 00:05:07.659 Maybe he had deliberately left it unspecific so that we would begin to ask the question, 00:05:08.319 --> 00:05:14.599 what grace of God is there for us in Christ Jesus? 00:05:15.019 --> 00:05:20.899 What goodness, what blessing, what undeserved favor, what help comes to us through Christ Jesus? 00:05:22.319 --> 00:05:26.579 And I think as we start to think about that, we realize that that's a long list. 00:05:26.579 --> 00:05:32.680 And forgiveness is just one of the things on the list. 00:05:33.699 --> 00:05:43.599 We might wonder, Paul, are you telling Timothy that he should be strengthened in the grace that's already shown through Christ Jesus? 00:05:43.779 --> 00:05:49.419 Like, look back on what Christ did for you when he lived among us and when he died for us. 00:05:50.680 --> 00:05:55.319 Or are you telling Timothy to be strengthened in the grace that God gives us right now in the present? 00:05:56.579 --> 00:06:02.180 Like the day-to-day meeting of our needs and help and sustaining that he does by his spirit who lives in us. 00:06:03.939 --> 00:06:07.560 Or are you talking about the grace that God intends to give us in the future? 00:06:08.899 --> 00:06:13.299 The hope of resurrection, eternal life, heaven. 00:06:13.300 --> 00:06:23.120 And I think Paul might have left it open so that Timothy and we might reflect on all of it. 00:06:24.259 --> 00:06:27.540 Past, present, and future grace. 00:06:28.259 --> 00:06:36.220 All the good things that are given to us freely and generously as gifts from God through our relationship with King Jesus. 00:06:36.220 --> 00:06:44.280 And when we begin to reflect on all of these things, when we begin to fix 00:06:49.300 --> 00:06:58.500 The countless gifts of God's grace that are ours in Christ Jesus give us strength to face whatever challenges, 00:06:58.900 --> 00:07:02.240 whatever hardships, whatever difficulties come our way in life. 00:07:02.960 --> 00:07:08.540 And sometimes when those things come, it's just easy to lose our way, lose our focus, lose our sight. 00:07:08.540 --> 00:07:13.060 But when the going gets tough, don't forget, Timothy. 00:07:13.960 --> 00:07:22.300 Take courage, take strength in remembering all that God has given in his son, through his son to us. 00:07:22.960 --> something similar to this already back in chapter 1 just a couple weeks ago. 00:07:54.680 --> 00:07:58.600 Let's look back for a second to verse 13 and 14 of chapter 1. 00:07:59.100 --> 00:07:59.800 Paul said there, 00:08:00.220 --> 00:08:04.680 What you heard from me, keep as the pattern of sound teaching. 00:08:04.680 --> 00:08:08.500 Guard the good deposit that was entrusted to you. 00:08:09.000 --> 00:08:13.100 Guard it with the help of the Holy Spirit who lives in us. 00:08:13.639 --> 00:08:16.000 And we talked about how that good deposit is the gospel. 00:08:16.220 --> 00:08:22.939 It is the teaching that has come from Christ through the apostles to us and to Timothy. 00:08:23.960 --> 00:08:27.100 Well, here again in verse 2, Paul's saying it again. 00:08:27.240 --> 00:08:27.560 He's saying, 00:08:27.560 --> 00:08:39.000 I know it says people on screen there, but men is going to be the better translation. 00:08:39.299 --> 00:08:42.539 We've talked about this carefully and faithfully pass on the things that he has heard from Paul. 00:09:13.559 --> 00:09:16.539 Paul is the apostle of Christ Jesus. 00:09:16.539 --> 00:09:20.899 It's Paul that speaks authoritatively on behalf of Jesus himself. 00:09:21.059 --> 00:09:27.919 And so, Timothy's job is to just take those things that he has heard through the apostle, through Paul, and pass them on. 00:09:31.939 --> 00:09:35.039 This ought to be the role of the teachers and the preachers in the church. 00:09:35.379 --> 00:09:39.919 Simply to pass on the things that Paul has said and taught. 00:09:40.360 --> 00:09:43.980 Because Paul was speaking on behalf of Christ. 00:09:43.980 --> 00:09:46.100 We're not looking to reinvent. 00:09:46.700 --> 00:09:48.779 We're not looking to refresh. 00:09:49.220 --> 00:09:53.240 We're not looking to change the teaching of the church from generation to generation. 00:09:53.740 --> 00:09:58.340 Because what we have here in the apostles' own words is the good deposit. 00:09:58.620 --> 00:10:02.960 It is the blueprint for sound teaching that's been given to us. 00:10:03.039 --> 00:10:04.620 And so, we need to follow this blueprint. 00:10:04.840 --> 00:10:09.000 We need to teach these same things from generation to generation. 00:10:09.000 --> 00:10:12.759 And not just try to come up with our own new thoughts, new ideas. 00:10:14.200 --> then be able to teach it to others, to still others. 00:11:08.639 --> 00:11:13.779 This is one of the evidences that the time of the apostles was drawing to a close. 00:11:13.779 --> 00:11:20.299 That God didn't intend to send and gift apostles through every generation right up until today. 00:11:21.439 --> 00:11:24.279 What is the succession plan for Paul? 00:11:25.220 --> 00:11:27.319 I mean, he's near the end here. 00:11:27.740 --> 00:11:28.839 He's soon to die. 00:11:30.439 --> 00:11:34.199 Paul doesn't say, Timothy, when I die, Jesus is going to make you an apostle. 00:11:34.620 --> 00:11:37.480 And then speak directly through you, just as he has through me. 00:11:38.500 --> 00:11:43.399 He didn't say, Timothy, when I die, God's going to raise up a new generation of apostles. 00:11:43.399 --> 00:11:51.059 And you should listen to them because they are going to speak directly on behalf of Jesus, just like Jesus has through me. 00:11:51.559 --> 00:11:51.899 No. 00:11:52.340 --> 00:12:02.139 If that was the case, there'd be no need to guard this good deposit and be so careful to entrust it from generation to generation to reliable men who are able to teach it to others. 00:12:03.379 --> 00:12:08.639 No, it seems that God's plan was that the time of the apostles would draw to a close. 00:12:08.639 --> 00:12:24.000 It would come to an end and that for the generations that would follow, we would just keep passing on these same words, this same good deposit from generation to generation, from reliable men to reliable men and so on and so forth. 00:12:24.000 --> 00:12:29.059 Notice Paul's double emphasis on the quality of the men. 00:12:30.320 --> 00:12:36.600 Entrust to reliable, or as another translation says, faithful men, that's probably more literal. 00:12:36.740 --> 00:12:38.059 Entrust to faithful men. 00:12:38.919 --> 00:12:40.320 These are to be trustworthy men. 00:12:40.879 --> 00:12:43.740 Men who can be depended on and counted on. 00:12:43.740 --> 00:12:53.259 This brings to mind the words that Paul wrote to Timothy in the first letter, which we looked at a while back, about elders and how they must be men of proven character. 00:12:54.279 --> 00:12:56.019 They must be men of integrity. 00:12:56.240 --> 00:12:59.700 They must be faithful to their wives. 00:13:01.139 --> 00:13:03.740 Faithful overseers of their own households. 00:13:04.320 --> 00:13:06.480 Faithful in their interactions with outsiders. 00:13:06.480 --> 00:13:12.800 And, remember back then in 1 Timothy, elders are to be able to teach. 00:13:14.279 --> 00:13:26.060 It also brings to mind the words Paul wrote to Titus about elders, where he said that they must be men who hold firmly to the trustworthy message as it has been taught, 00:13:26.560 --> 00:13:33.000 so that they in turn can encourage others by sound doctrine and refute those who oppose it. 00:13:33.000 --> 00:13:37.460 So, entrust these words to faithful men. 00:13:37.720 --> 00:13:39.700 Men of good, godly character. 00:13:40.840 --> 00:13:47.179 But also men who will be qualified, who will be literally able to teach others. 00:13:48.700 --> 00:13:51.200 00:14:38.279 --> 00:14:42.599 One of those ways is through supporting Bible colleges and seminaries. 00:14:43.579 --> 00:14:47.079 Training up faithful men who are able to teach is not an easy thing. 00:14:47.080 --> 00:14:50.900 And so that's probably why we do this. 00:14:51.000 --> 00:14:54.700 We partner together as churches and support our Bible colleges and seminaries. 00:14:54.879 --> 00:14:57.280 And some of them do a very good job. 00:14:57.980 --> 00:14:59.480 That's one way we can do it. 00:15:00.120 --> 00:15:04.220 But we can and we should also do this within the local church. 00:15:05.180 --> 00:15:08.500 Perhaps in our Christian culture we've maybe gone a little bit too far 00:15:08.500 --> 00:15:13.080 into this idea that the teachers in the church must be professionals. 00:15:13.080 --> 00:15:21.580 Must be the paid pastor who has completed at least four years of theological study in a good Bible college. 00:15:22.639 --> 00:15:23.759 I mean think about this. 00:15:24.280 --> 00:15:30.020 How many Bible colleges were there in Timothy's day in the province of Asia 00:15:30.020 --> 00:15:34.280 that he could send his faithful men to where they could become able to teach? 00:15:35.540 --> 00:15:39.140 We can and we should be doing this within the local church. 00:15:39.139 --> 00:15:47.759 Nurturing, growing, encouraging faithful men into able teachers for future generations. 00:15:48.600 --> 00:15:56.299 We often lament the decline that we see in various denominations and churches around us here in North America. 00:15:57.439 --> 00:16:01.980 Could it be that one of the big factors in some of those stories is simply a failure 00:16:01.980 --> 00:16:08.240 to entrust the good deposit to reliable men who were able to teach? 00:16:09.620 --> 00:16:12.240 So let's continue to support our Bible colleges. 00:16:12.860 --> 00:16:15.620 But let's also look to the men among us. 00:16:16.840 --> 00:16:22.039 God is calling all of us as men, at the least, to be faithful men. 00:16:22.720 --> 00:16:24.539 Men of character and integrity. 00:16:24.539 --> 00:16:31.579 And from among those who are faithful, some must rise to the challenge of teaching others. 00:16:32.879 --> 00:16:34.399 And so may the Lord give us courage. 00:16:35.279 --> 00:16:42.259 May the Lord give us wisdom to know how and who in our little local 00:17:05.920 This is now the second time that Paul has called Timothy to suffer with him. 00:17:06.779 --> 00:17:09.000 Look back to chapter 1, verse 8. 00:17:10.960 --> 00:17:13.140 Whoa, I got the wrong verse on screen there. 00:17:13.220 --> 00:17:14.200 It should be 2 Timothy. 00:17:14.200 --> 00:17:19.140 But if you look in your Bible, 2 Timothy 1, verse 8, Paul says, 00:17:19.799 --> 00:17:24.259 Join with me in suffering for the gospel by the power of God. 00:17:25.860 --> 00:17:27.840 So are we noticing a theme here? 00:17:28.860 --> 00:17:30.580 Are we noticing an emphasis? 00:17:32.200 --> 00:17:34.500 Do these words make you squirm a bit? 00:17:35.480 --> 00:17:37.539 Join with me in suffering. 00:17:37.539 --> 00:17:44.460 It's not every day a person earnestly pleads with you to suffer with them. 00:17:45.859 --> 00:17:48.599 That's exactly what Paul, though, is saying here to Timothy. 00:17:49.359 --> 00:17:54.740 Paul is under heavy fire from his opponents because of his preaching the name of Jesus. 00:17:55.359 --> 00:17:56.980 He's firmly in their sights. 00:17:57.099 --> 00:17:58.180 He's in their crosshairs. 00:17:58.619 --> 00:18:02.899 The first big Roman trial in the sequence that will lead to his death has happened. 00:18:03.559 --> 00:18:05.799 And what's Paul asking Timothy? 00:18:05.799 --> 00:18:10.720 He's saying, come stand with me here in the crosshairs. 00:18:12.159 --> 00:18:18.599 Here in the sights of these opponents where I am under heavy fire. 00:18:19.000 --> 00:18:20.740 Come into the trench with me. 00:18:22.440 --> 00:18:24.079 It's a big ask of Timothy. 00:18:25.759 --> 00:18:27.759 But let's not forget the first imperative. 00:18:28.019 --> 00:18:33.519 There is strength to be found in the grace of God that is in Christ Jesus 00:18:33.519 --> 00:18:39.180 so that Timothy can say, yes, I'm willing to suffer disgrace for the name of Jesus. 00:18:40.299 --> 00:18:41.839 So this is the third imperative. 00:18:42.480 --> 00:18:44.720 Suffer hardship with me, Timothy. 00:18:45.460 --> 00:18:49.700 And with this imperative, Paul gives Timothy three analogies. 00:18:50.519 --> 00:18:52.879 That of the soldier in verses 3 and 4. 00:18:53.859 --> 00:18:56.579 That of the athlete in verse 5. 00:18:56.579 --> 00:19:00.199 And that of the farmer in verse 6. 00:19:00.259 --> 00:19:01.399 Let's look at these for a moment. 00:19:01.559 --> 00:19:03.679 First, this analogy of the soldier. 00:19:03.859 --> 00:19:08.919 He says, join with me in suffering like a good soldier of Christ Jesus. 00:19:10.059
