week we heard Jesus address the issue of money, of wealth, in order to get at our hearts, 00:00:31.880 --> 00:00:35.120 what we really value, what we really worship. 00:00:36.579 --> 00:00:41.399 And that same conversation continues in the rest of Luke 16 today. 00:00:41.399 --> 00:00:50.899 As Jesus enters through the door of money, rich and poor, to get at eternal matters of heaven and hell. 00:00:53.079 --> 00:00:56.799 Honestly, I've really struggled with this passage this week. 00:00:57.379 --> 00:01:01.939 If you have a bulletin, you can see where the outline was when it was time to Pharisees, who were lovers of money, 00:02:47.800 --> 00:02:52.700 heard all these things and they ridiculed Jesus. 00:02:54.420 --> 00:02:58.700 The Pharisees, the religious leaders, the ones who were teaching others, 00:02:58.840 --> 00:03:00.260 they ridiculed Jesus. 00:03:00.460 --> 00:03:05.200 They mock Him, which we'll find out in a minute is not really a good idea. 00:03:06.400 --> 00:03:07.879 But why? 00:03:08.020 --> 00:03:10.340 Why are they ridiculing Jesus? 00:03:10.719 --> 00:03:14.580 Well, they loved money, the text tells us. 00:03:14.659 --> 00:03:16.659 And they saw no problem with this. 00:03:17.040 --> 00:03:20.460 All of the teaching at the time was telling them 00:03:20.460 --> 00:03:23.240 that that was a reasonable thing to do. 00:03:23.460 --> 00:03:28.140 Financial prosperity and wealth was a sign of God's blessing. 00:03:28.340 --> 00:03:31.760 Poverty was viewed as a punishment from God. 00:03:32.560 --> 00:03:36.819 And here's Jesus saying, these even though many of us would say we don't hold to some of its assertions, 00:04:20.959 --> 00:04:30.759 we're drawn to read a book by a slick-talking, good-looking, successful, well-marketed Christian leader, aren't we? 00:04:31.479 --> 00:04:33.279 Certainly he must know something. 00:04:35.359 --> 00:04:36.479 Successful as he is. 00:04:38.339 --> 00:04:39.659 Try this for just a minute. 00:04:39.660 --> 00:04:44.280 Picture for me in your minds just an average Christian guy. 00:04:44.500 --> 00:04:45.980 Just picture one. 00:04:46.060 --> 00:04:48.200 See if you can just picture a Christian in your head. 00:04:49.960 --> 00:04:56.680 I'm willing to bet that for most of us, the image we get in our heads is white, 00:04:59.640 --> 00:05:05.740 somewhat upper-middle class, well-mannered, well-spoken. 00:05:05.740 --> 00:05:11.560 For most of us, that is what pops into our minds when I tell you to picture a Christian. 00:05:11.720 --> 00:05:16.180 But most Christians today are, and through history, far from affluent. 00:05:16.980 --> 00:05:19.680 And most suffer greatly. 00:05:21.139 --> 00:05:24.500 You probably think if you went to Chick-fil-A tomorrow, because you can't go today, 00:05:24.840 --> 00:05:28.960 but if you went tomorrow, you could hang out for about five minutes 00:05:28.960 --> 00:05:32.840 and pretty much kind of pick out who the Christians are. 00:05:32.839 --> 00:05:37.799 You know, if you hang around people for just a little while, you can figure that out. 00:05:37.819 --> 00:05:38.679 Just watching, right? 00:05:39.979 --> 00:05:41.679 It's the ones who say, my pleasure. 00:05:42.759 --> 00:05:45.039 That's always the ones to be looking for. 00:05:46.479 --> 00:05:49.399 But we need to caution ourselves when we think that way. 00:05:49.399 --> 00:05:53.139 Mere outward appearances are often misleading, aren't they? 00:05:54.639 --> 00:05:58.039 See, Jesus is going to upend these expectations 00:05:58.040 --> 00:06:05.819 and particularly challenge the Pharisees and us on our outward righteousness. 00:06:07.819 --> 00:06:09.140 Verse 15. 00:06:10.360 --> 00:06:13.280 He said to them, to the Pharisees, Jesus says, 00:06:13.980 --> 00:06:19.420 You are those who justify yourselves before men, but God knows your hearts. 00:06:19.420 --> 00:06:26.819 For what is exalted among men is an abomination in the sight of God. 00:06:27.259 --> 00:06:33.660 You like to look good, to appear religious, to have people think well of you, 00:06:33.800 --> 00:06:37.360 but you're not fooling God, Jesus says. 00:06:37.920 --> 00:06:43.600 Your external law-keeping righteousness without regard for your heart, 00:06:43.600 --> 00:06:49.120 for deeply loving God may be praised by others, 00:06:49.300 --> 00:06:52.420 but it's abominable to God. 00:06:53.980 --> 00:06:55.200 And he continues. 00:06:56.200 --> 00:06:58.640 The law and the prophets were until John. 00:06:59.140 --> 00:07:01.740 Since then, the good news of the kingdom of God is preached, 00:07:01.920 --> 00:07:04.040 and everyone forces his way into it. 00:07:04.420 --> 00:07:07.340 But it is easier for heaven and earth to pass away 00:07:07.340 --> 00:07:11.740 than for one dot of the law to become void. 00:07:11.740 --> 00:07:17.340 Yes, the Messiah has come, and that changes things, Jesus is saying. 00:07:18.000 --> 00:07:19.879 But the law stays. 00:07:21.199 --> 00:07:23.560 In fact, elsewhere, what does Jesus say about the law? 00:07:23.680 --> 00:07:28.079 That he has come not to abolish it, but to fulfill it. 00:07:29.199 --> 00:07:32.720 It's an unchanging picture of God's character, 00:07:33.060 --> 00:07:36.500 and it exposes our hearts, doesn't it? 00:07:37.079 --> 00:07:38.980 To call us back to his heart. 00:07:38.980 --> 00:07:43.120 It shows us God's heart, and it shows us ours, 00:07:43.240 --> 00:07:45.700 where ours doesn't look like God's, 00:07:45.840 --> 00:07:48.080 to call us back to that heart. 00:07:48.420 --> 00:07:51.020 Jesus' point here is that the Pharisees, 00:07:51.280 --> 00:07:54.060 who pride themselves on keeping the law, 00:07:54.800 --> 00:07:57.840 actually are neglecting it. 00:07:58.960 --> 00:08:03.040 The Pharisees, who think they are experts on God's heart, 00:08:03.040 --> 00:08:07.200 are actually missing it altogether. 00:08:08.800 --> 00:08:15.120 Instead of listening to God's word and clearly letting it do what it's supposed to do, 00:08:15.220 --> 00:08:17.300 expose them and shape them, 00:08:17.879 --> 00:08:19.759 show them where their hearts are misguided, 00:08:20.259 --> 00:08:23.439 instead of doing that, they've lowered the bar 00:08:23.439 --> 00:08:25.439 to a place they can reach, 00:08:26.000 --> 00:08:28.640 so they can feel good about themselves, 00:08:28.879 --> 00:08:31.080 so they can look good to others. 00:08:31.079 --> 00:08:33.740 Jesus says that's so dangerous. 00:08:34.100 --> 00:08:35.059 God hates it. 00:08:37.620 --> 00:08:41.139 And Jesus says that in the context of how they pursue money 00:08:41.139 --> 00:08:43.220 and neglect the poor. 00:08:44.480 --> 00:08:48.039 They're failing to take his word seriously, 00:08:48.799 --> 00:08:52.279 and when we do that, it's actually a rejection of God himself. 00:08:53.439 --> 00:08:57.279 This is what he will talk about at length in the parable that's coming up here. 00:08:57.279 --> 00:09:00.799 But first, he gives another quick example, 00:09:01.319 --> 00:09:04.579 a one-verse example before he gives a ten-verse example. 00:09:05.139 --> 00:09:07.759 And it may seem out of place here, verse 18, 00:09:08.399 --> 00:09:12.819 everyone who divorces his wife and marries another commits adultery, 00:09:13.539 --> 00:09:18.399 and he who marries a woman divorced from her husband commits adultery. 00:09:19.839 --> 00:09:20.939 What's Jesus saying? 00:09:21.199 --> 00:09:22.399 Where does that show up? 00:09:22.399 --> 00:09:26.360 Well, the Pharisees over time had written law codes, 00:09:26.539 --> 00:09:28.860 many of them lengthy codes, 00:09:29.120 --> 00:09:31.079 with reasons for divorce 00:09:31.079 --> 00:09:35.779 that basically meant that men could get a divorce, 00:09:35.939 --> 00:09:36.879 get out of their marriages, 00:09:36.879 --> 00:09:39.799 for just about any reason at all. 00:09:41.299 --> 00:09:43.199 And Jesus is making the point 00:09:43.199 --> 00:09:47.480 that the law of God in his word still stands. 00:09:47.480 --> 00:09:51.580 This issue of divorce is a significant one 00:09:51.580 --> 00:09:54.480 and a sensitive one in our own context, right? 00:09:55.180 --> 00:09:57.320 So I actually want us, after Easter, 00:09:57.539 --> 00:09:59.519 to come back to this verse 00:09:59.519 --> 00:10:02.800 and just talk a little bit more about what it means for us 00:10:02.800 --> 00:10:07.039 and how our hearts engage with God's law in that regard. 00:10:08.080 --> 00:10:09.740 So we'll do that in a couple of weeks. 00:10:10.240 --> 00:10:12.759 But for the context of this passage, 00:10:13.300 --> 00:10:15.300 what Jesus is saying is that 00:10:15.299 --> 00:10:17.259 he's giving the Pharisees an example 00:10:17.259 --> 00:10:22.659 of how they're lowering the standard of God's law 00:10:22.659 --> 00:10:26.199 in order to keep it from exposing their hearts, 00:10:26.779 --> 00:10:29.919 exposing them as frauds, as sinners, 00:10:30.079 --> 00:10:31.199 as those who are needy. 00:10:33.120 --> 00:10:36.939 Jesus is emphasizing the seriousness of God's word. 00:10:37.939 --> 00:10:39.759 And there are several things in this passage 00:10:39.759 --> 00:10:41.979 he's urging us to take seriously, 00:10:41.980 --> 00:10:43.639 and this is the first, 00:10:44.180 --> 00:10:45.539 it's God's word. 00:10:46.759 --> 00:10:48.519 It's call on our lives. 00:10:49.899 --> 00:10:52.920 So he said that briefly with regard to divorce. 00:10:53.080 --> 00:10:54.980 You need to take God's word seriously. 00:10:55.860 --> 00:10:58.240 But now he's going to tell a story 00:10:58.240 --> 00:11:03.240 to make the same point with regard to rich and poor. 00:11:04.039 --> 00:11:04.779 Tracking with me? 00:11:05.159 --> 00:11:09.080 This is example two now for Jesus engaging their hearts. 00:11:09.080 --> 00:11:13.960 He's going to tell a story to expose the Pharisees' hearts 00:11:13.960 --> 00:11:16.060 and our hearts. 00:11:16.360 --> 00:11:18.020 This parable we're about to read, 00:11:18.100 --> 00:11:20.400 the story of the rich man and Lazarus, 00:11:20.520 --> 00:11:23.100 is going to remind us primarily 00:11:23.100 --> 00:11:27.240 that our response to God and his word, 00:11:27.480 --> 00:11:30.480 in this case particularly with regard to money, 00:11:31.320 --> 00:11:33.580 has eternal consequences. 00:11:33.580 --> 00:11:37.639 Remember, this is a story Jesus tells 00:11:37.639 --> 00:11:42.379 to engage our hearts with that particular point. 00:11:42.759 --> 00:11:45.320 He's not recounting historical events, 00:11:46.379 --> 00:11:47.480 historical details. 00:11:48.220 --> 00:11:51.900 He's teaching our hearts important lessons 00:11:51.900 --> 00:11:54.660 through a story to engage our hearts, right? 00:11:54.680 --> 00:11:55.560 You do that with stories. 00:11:55.940 --> 00:11:58.980 Jesus is telling this story to engage our hearts 00:11:58.980 --> 00:12:01.780 and to teach us these important things. 00:12:01.779 --> 00:12:04.360 Listen to the first part of the parable. 00:12:04.519 --> 00:12:06.360 It starts at verse 19. 00:12:07.959 --> 00:12:10.439 There was a rich man who was clothed in purple 00:12:10.439 --> 00:12:13.860 and fine linen and who feasted sumptuously every day. 00:12:15.079 --> 00:12:18.100 And at his gate was laid a poor man named Lazarus 00:12:18.100 --> 00:12:19.519 covered with sores 00:12:19.519 --> 00:12:22.159 who desired to be fed with what fell 00:12:22.159 --> 00:12:23.699 from the rich man's table. 00:12:24.259 --> 00:12:26.879 Moreover, even the dogs came and licked his sores. 00:12:26.879 --> 00:12:30.480 The poor man died and was carried by the angels 00:12:30.480 --> 00:12:31.899 to Abraham's side. 00:12:32.539 --> 00:12:35.139 The rich man also died and was buried 00:12:35.139 --> 00:12:37.220 and in Hades, being in torment, 00:12:37.679 --> 00:12:41.360 he lifted up his eyes and saw Abraham far off 00:12:41.360 --> 00:12:43.439 and Lazarus at his side. 00:12:44.559 --> 00:12:45.340 And he called out, 00:12:45.679 --> 00:12:48.019 Father Abraham, have --> 00:13:06.800 and Lazarus in like manner bad things. 00:13:07.580 --> 00:13:09.620 But now he is comforted here 00:13:09.620 --> 00:13:11.340 and you are in anguish. 00:13:12.320 --> 00:13:13.240 00:13:29.679 --> 00:13:33.519 is the remarkable study and contrasts, right? 00:13:34.879 --> 00:13:37.299 These two men, very different. 00:13:38.079 --> 00:13:40.980 This first one's not merely a man who is rich, 00:13:41.199 --> 00:13:43.439 but he is lavishly rich 00:13:43.439 --> 00:13:44.919 and he feels it. 00:13:44.919 --> 00:13:47.179 Enjoying fine food 00:13:47.179 --> 00:13:50.199 and clothes fit for a king all the time. 00:13:52.000 --> 00:13:53.879 And right outside his front door 00:13:53.879 --> 00:13:57.979 where he would pass by all the time 00:13:57.979 --> 00:14:00.959 is not merely a man who is poor, 00:14:01.179 --> 00:14:03.779 but he is devastatingly poor. 00:14:04.639 --> 00:14:05.779 And he feels it. 00:14:06.519 --> 00:14:10.360 The aching hunger that longs for any scraps. 00:14:10.759 --> 00:14:12.179 The bread they would use 00:14:12.179 --> 00:14:15.139 to scoop up the other food that they were eating. 00:14:15.259 --> 00:14:16.399 He just wants that 00:14:16.399 --> 00:14:17.919 or the crumbs from their table. 00:14:18.039 --> 00:14:18.859 He's so hungry. 00:14:20.559 --> 00:14:22.259 The sharp pain of wounds 00:14:22.259 --> 00:14:24.219 being licked by wild dogs 00:14:24.219 --> 00:14:26.019 that roam the streets of the city. 00:14:27.479 --> 00:14:29.219 The humiliating reality 00:14:29.219 --> 00:14:31.699 of not being able to fend for himself. 00:14:33.759 --> 00:14:36.459 Two very different men, right? 00:14:37.859 --> 00:14:39.139 But they both die 00:14:39.139 --> 00:14:42.000 as we all do eventually. 00:14:43.120 --> 00:14:51.939 when he gives us a glimpse into eternity. 00:14:52.099 --> 00:14:53.139 Things are very different. 00:14:54.199 --> 00:14:57.079 First, Lazarus, the poor man, dies 00:14:57.079 --> 00:14:59.679 and perhaps no one cares. 00:15:00.359 --> 00:15:02.959 There's no mention even of a burial. 00:15:04.359 --> 00:15:07.319 We would expect here in Jesus' time 00:15:07.319 --> 00:15:09.740 to hear of public officials 00:15:09.740 --> 00:15:11.860 tossing his body in a cart, 00:15:12.740 --> 00:15:15.820 taking it outside the city to Gehenna, 00:15:15.820 --> 00:15:18.620 the waste dump to dispose of it. 00:15:21.259 --> 00:15:24.039 But actually, instead, 00:15:24.320 --> 00:15:26.120 we get a window into God's heart 00:15:26.120 --> 00:15:29.200 for the poor whom he loves. 00:15:29.600 --> 00:15:33.779 Jesus says he was carried by angels 00:15:33.779 --> 00:15:36.779 to Abraham's side. 00:15:36.779 --> 00:15:38.759 Don't you love that? 00:15:39.539 --> 00:16:05.700 close to the heart of Father Abraham. 00:16:06.700 --> 00:16:09.300 He went from discomfort to comfort. 00:16:09.980 --> 00:16:14.100 He went from deep suffering to great glory. 00:16:41.299 --> 00:16:44.799 A band of angels coming after me. 00:16:45.579 --> 00:16:47.479 Coming for to carry me home. 00:16:47.480 --> 00:16:50.480 I love that. 00:16:52.279 --> 00:16:53.720
