00:03:04.280 --> 00:03:06.920 He has everything that, like, D.C. people want, right? 00:03:06.960 --> 00:03:12.199 He has…he's wealthy, he has influence, he has power, he has status, he has respect. 00:03:12.199 --> 00:03:18.379 He has all of the things that bring people who don't grow up in D.C. to a place like D.C. 00:03:19.739 --> 00:03:21.319 He has all of these things. 00:03:21.439 --> 00:03:25.379 And yet, for that very reason, this man's actually in grave spiritual danger. 00:03:25.519 --> 00:03:29.280 That's something that Jesus reveals over the course of this encounter, 00:03:29.620 --> 00:03:35.280 which means we may actually also be in spiritual danger. 00:03:35.280 --> 00:03:39.560 So what we're going to do is look at this encounter and we're going to answer these questions. 00:03:40.280 --> 00:03:42.920 What is the danger that we're talking about? 00:04:39.120 --> 00:04:42.019 What's the danger that this man is in that we might be in? 00:04:42.100 --> 00:04:43.040 What's the concern? 00:04:43.040 --> 00:04:43.100 What's the concern? 00:04:43.980 --> 00:04:50.660 This passage shows us essentially that wealth can be spiritually dangerous, but probably 00:04:50.660 --> 00:04:53.560 not for the reason that most of us think. 00:04:54.500 --> 00:04:59.820 Even if you're not a Christian, most people know the verse that is in this passage, verse 00:04:59.820 --> 00:05:05.480 25, for it is easier for a camel to go through the eye of a needle than for a rich person to 00:05:05.480 --> 00:05:07.400 enter the kingdom of God. 00:05:07.399 --> 00:05:15.079 Now, at first glance, what that seems to say is that rich people will never enter the kingdom 00:05:15.079 --> 00:05:18.299 of God, so there must be something inherently wrong with being rich. 00:05:18.379 --> 00:05:20.899 There must be something wrong with being wealthy. 00:05:21.079 --> 00:05:28.599 God must have a certain disdain for wealthy people that's going to keep them out. 00:05:28.600 --> 00:05:35.439 And yet what we need to see is that in the larger context of Scripture, that can't possibly 00:05:35.439 --> 00:05:37.720 be the way we interpret this verse. 00:05:38.439 --> 00:05:44.500 Because some of the prophets and some of the apostles were very poor, and God used them. 00:05:44.600 --> 00:05:46.920 Some of the early church leaders were poor. 00:05:47.080 --> 00:05:48.900 They had no social power. 00:05:49.040 --> 00:05:49.820 They were slaves. 00:05:49.980 --> 00:05:51.320 They were from minority classes. 00:05:51.720 --> 00:05:53.300 And yet God used them mightily. 00:05:53.300 --> 00:05:59.860 And yet we also know that we have wealthy people like Abraham, or David, or Solomon, 00:06:00.379 --> 00:06:05.160 or Matthew, or Lydia, or Joseph of Arimathea. 00:06:05.319 --> 00:06:08.939 These are wealthy people, powerful people, influential people. 00:06:09.300 --> 00:06:12.220 God used them powerfully right alongside the poor people. 00:06:12.580 --> 00:06:18.180 And so what we actually see is that the beauty of God's story is not that He only uses the poor 00:06:18.180 --> 00:06:21.720 or that He only uses the rich and powerful. 00:06:21.720 --> 00:06:28.580 The beauty of God's story is that He can use anyone and everyone to further His kingdom. 00:06:29.040 --> 00:06:33.560 And He weaves all kinds of people into His story. 00:06:34.600 --> 00:06:35.860 Okay, so it can't mean that. 00:06:35.920 --> 00:06:41.420 So then what does Jesus mean with this verse about wealth and a camel and a needle? 00:06:41.860 --> 00:06:45.680 Well, the clue comes from the context of the passage. 00:06:45.680 --> 00:06:55.120 If we look at what comes just before this encounter, Jesus has just told a parable about two men praying in the temple. 00:06:55.199 --> 00:06:59.079 And it's no coincidence that Luke places that in the same section here. 00:06:59.460 --> 00:07:03.879 One man in Jesus' parable comes into the temple, and he's a proud man. 00:07:03.920 --> 00:07:04.460 And he says, 00:07:04.459 --> 00:07:07.939 I thank God that I'm not like these sinners. 00:07:08.239 --> 00:07:09.539 I am a good man. 00:07:10.819 --> 00:07:16.199 And then in the parable, there's another person there who is so crushed by his guilt 00:07:16.199 --> 00:07:20.819 that all he can do is stare at the floor and beat his chest and say, 00:07:21.259 --> 00:07:24.039 God, be merciful to me, a sinner. 00:07:24.040 --> 00:07:26.300 And then Jesus says, 00:07:27.080 --> 00:07:31.760 that is the man who goes home justified before God. 00:07:32.980 --> 00:07:37.540 So the humble man is crying out for mercy. 00:07:38.580 --> 00:07:44.180 And mercy is, by definition, crying out for God to give you something that you don't deserve. 00:07:44.720 --> 00:07:44.860 Right? 00:07:44.920 --> 00:07:46.000 That's what mercy is. 00:07:46.200 --> 00:07:48.580 I don't deserve this, but I need it. 00:07:48.579 --> 00:07:55.060 The proud man doesn't believe that God needs to give him anything that he doesn't deserve. 00:07:55.279 --> 00:07:57.560 He believes that God should give him what he's owed. 00:07:58.419 --> 00:07:58.599 Right? 00:07:58.859 --> 00:08:00.419 And so another way of saying it is, 00:08:01.000 --> 00:08:03.479 the proud man is entirely self-sufficient. 00:08:04.860 --> 00:08:06.019 He's his own Savior. 00:08:06.919 --> 00:08:08.240 I'm standing before you, God. 00:08:08.279 --> 00:08:10.899 I've done all the right things, and I want you to give me what I'm owed. 00:08:11.099 --> 00:08:12.439 I upheld my end of the bargain. 00:08:12.740 --> 00:08:14.060 Now it's time for you to come through. 00:08:15.240 --> 00:08:16.759 So Jesus tells that parable. 00:08:16.759 --> 00:08:21.159 And then Jesus points to some children, probably children that were right there, 00:08:21.420 --> 00:08:21.959 and says, 00:08:22.699 --> 00:08:28.240 whoever does not receive the kingdom of God like one of these children shall not enter it. 00:08:28.959 --> 00:08:30.139 Now what's the point there? 00:08:30.219 --> 00:08:33.139 What's the difference between a child and an adult? 00:08:34.120 --> 00:08:35.659 Well, there are a number of differences. 00:08:36.220 --> 00:08:40.639 The one that we're thinking about today is a child, by definition, is not self-sufficient. 00:08:41.860 --> 00:08:43.080 You know, a child, by definition, 00:08:43.080 --> 00:08:48.759 needs an adult to take care of them and to meet their needs and to show them how to live. 00:08:49.740 --> 00:08:50.000 Right? 00:08:50.080 --> 00:08:53.400 Once you get to that point where you can do that on your own, you're no longer a child. 00:08:53.560 --> 00:08:55.300 You're an adult, by definition. 00:08:56.280 --> 00:08:59.020 And so the point is, if we look at all that context, 00:08:59.139 --> 00:09:00.980 what's the point of what's really going on here? 00:09:00.980 --> 00:09:08.960 One of the most dangerous lies when it comes to our relationship with God is the lie of self-sufficiency. 00:09:09.860 --> 00:09:13.200 It's the lie of self-sufficiency. 00:09:13.539 --> 00:09:16.120 And this goes all the way back to the fall. 00:09:17.600 --> 00:09:24.519 The Bible says that we were actually created to live with God and for God and to love God, 00:09:24.580 --> 00:09:26.960 that we were made for that relationship. 00:09:26.960 --> 00:09:31.280 You know, St. Augustine says that the Trinity is, at its core, 00:09:31.960 --> 00:09:39.720 three persons who each have an entirely other-oriented, self-giving, sacrificial, 00:09:40.000 --> 00:09:43.160 other-glorifying love for the other members of the Trinity. 00:09:44.519 --> 00:09:44.960 Right? 00:09:45.000 --> 00:09:52.540 And we were created to have that kind of relationship with God who made us as an extension of that kind of love. 00:09:52.539 --> 00:09:56.860 And so another way of saying it is, life only works if God is at the center of it. 00:09:57.779 --> 00:09:58.179 Right? 00:09:58.240 --> 00:10:00.459 Life only makes sense if God is at the center of it. 00:10:00.899 --> 00:10:03.379 If you think about a solar system, you know, 00:10:03.459 --> 00:10:07.939 why do all of the planets not constantly crash into each other? 00:10:08.039 --> 00:10:10.319 Why is there not abject chaos in our solar system? 00:10:11.279 --> 00:10:16.639 Well, it's because they all share the same central object around which they orbit. 00:10:16.639 --> 00:10:25.019 It is their relationship with the sun at the center that creates harmony in their relationships with one another. 00:10:26.220 --> 00:10:26.299 Right? 00:10:26.659 --> 00:10:31.679 Life is made to operate best when God is at the center of our orbit. 00:10:33.100 --> 00:10:36.179 And so the great lie of Satan is to say, that's not actually true. 00:10:37.460 --> 00:10:42.039 Life actually works better if you get to decide what's at the center of your life. 00:10:42.179 --> 00:10:43.399 And might I make a suggestion? 00:10:44.340 --> 00:10:46.279 Maybe you should be at the center of your life. 00:10:46.639 --> 00:10:52.480 And that great lie that says, you don't need God to be at the center of your life. 00:10:52.620 --> 00:10:54.419 God is great. 00:10:54.659 --> 00:10:56.899 God is a nice add-on. 00:10:57.059 --> 00:11:00.759 God can be a helpful accessory, but you don't need Him to be at the center of your life. 00:11:01.340 --> 00:11:03.980 That goes all the way back to Genesis chapter 3. 00:11:04.319 --> 00:11:05.740 That's the lie of self-sufficiency. 00:11:06.819 --> 00:11:09.299 So this is why wealth can be so dangerous. 00:11:09.340 --> 00:11:11.720 Because what does wealth do to that lie? 00:12:26.659 --> 00:12:28.459 So, if you live in relative safety, 00:12:29.219 --> 00:12:32.899 if you have a steady job, steady income, 00:12:33.740 --> 00:12:37.000 if you have some kind of a plan or you've thought about retirement, 00:12:37.279 --> 00:12:41.179 if retirement even is something that is in your sort of vocabulary, 00:12:41.979 --> 00:12:44.579 if you have access to health care, if you have access to education, 00:12:44.779 --> 00:12:46.139 if you have access to transportation, 00:12:47.120 --> 00:12:50.779 if you have the kind of flexibility that allows you to work from home if you need to, 00:12:50.779 --> 00:12:53.399 especially if like child care falls through, 00:12:54.220 --> 00:12:57.480 if you have access to grocery stores that sell fresh produce, 00:12:58.039 --> 00:13:02.519 24-hour pharmacies where you can get pretty much any medication you need within a day or two, 00:13:03.259 --> 00:13:08.039 if you can get almost any product you can imagine delivered to your house within 24 to 48 hours 00:13:08.039 --> 00:13:08.839 with the click of a button, 00:13:09.939 --> 00:13:11.600 then chances are this probably applies to you. 00:13:12.059 --> 00:13:15.120 Because here's the question, like if those things are true about your life, 00:13:15.120 --> 00:13:19.320 how do you convince a person like that that they need anything? 00:13:20.759 --> 00:13:23.899 It's like most of my needs I don't even think about 00:13:23.899 --> 00:13:26.960 because they just get met automatically. 00:13:28.419 --> 00:13:28.779 Right? 00:13:28.840 --> 00:13:31.539 So, how do you convince a person like that that they need anything? 00:13:39.379 --> 00:13:40.159 Because as I said, 00:13:40.720 --> 00:13:41.100 it's not… 00:13:41.100 --> 00:13:45.159 you're not automatically corrupt if you're wealthy. 00:13:46.379 --> 00:13:47.340 You're in danger. 00:13:48.059 --> 00:13:49.139 How do we know if we're in danger? 00:13:50.259 --> 00:13:52.700 Well, look at this man's question to Jesus. 00:13:53.860 --> 00:13:54.759 Good teacher, 00:13:55.399 --> 00:13:58.399 what must I do to inherit eternal life? 00:13:58.759 --> 00:13:59.899 Right there, we know he's in danger. 00:14:00.460 --> 00:14:01.480 This guy's in danger. 00:14:02.419 --> 00:14:03.539 That one sentence, 00:14:04.860 --> 00:14:05.519 he's in danger. 00:14:05.740 --> 00:14:06.539 He's in the red zone. 00:14:07.100 --> 00:14:08.120 So, how do we know that? 00:14:08.120 --> 00:14:10.240 There are actually three signs. 00:14:10.299 --> 00:14:12.100 If we break down this question, 00:14:12.600 --> 00:14:14.320 there are three signs of danger 00:14:14.320 --> 00:14:17.519 that we need to be aware of in our own lives. 00:14:18.080 --> 00:14:19.659 The first thing that we see here 00:14:19.659 --> 00:14:23.360 is the way this man perceives Jesus. 00:14:24.039 --> 00:14:28.039 Right away, we see that this man perceives Jesus as an advisor, 00:14:29.080 --> 00:14:30.000 a good teacher, 00:14:30.440 --> 00:14:32.180 but not necessarily a savior. 00:14:33.259 --> 00:14:34.560 He calls him good teacher, 00:14:34.560 --> 00:14:35.600 and Jesus says, 00:14:35.960 --> 00:14:37.019 why do you call me good? 00:14:37.100 --> 00:14:38.060 Only God is good. 00:14:38.120 --> 00:14:41.000 And this is one of those great places 00:14:41.000 --> 00:14:42.519 where you see Jesus' genius 00:14:42.519 --> 00:14:44.679 in the fact that he is not above using irony. 00:14:45.879 --> 00:14:48.379 And this is a kind of dramatic irony here, 00:14:48.440 --> 00:14:50.960 because we know who Jesus is as the reader, 00:14:51.080 --> 00:14:52.100 and we're reading this, 00:14:52.600 --> 00:14:55.560 and we see what this man is saying, 00:14:55.799 --> 00:14:57.279 and so Jesus essentially says, 00:14:57.679 --> 00:14:59.240 why do you call me good? 00:14:59.320 --> 00:15:00.659 Are you saying that I'm God? 00:15:00.659 --> 00:15:04.980 And it's this great moment of irony here, right? 00:15:05.219 --> 00:15:06.519 And it's another way of saying, 00:15:06.620 --> 00:15:08.439 you have no idea who you're talking to, do you? 00:15:09.879 --> 00:15:13.379 This man fails to recognize Jesus for who he is 00:15:13.379 --> 00:15:16.399 because this man fails to recognize his own need. 00:15:16.399 --> 00:15:20.480 And if you don't recognize your own need for Jesus, 00:15:20.799 --> 00:15:22.959 it's going to be almost impossible for you to recognize 00:15:22.959 --> 00:15:25.659 the significance of Jesus. 00:15:26.000 --> 00:15:29.159 And this man is standing face to face with the Son of God, 00:15:29.240 --> 00:15:30.939 and Jesus is ready and willing. 00:15:31.019 --> 00:15:31.899 We know from other encounters, 00:15:32.199 --> 00:15:34.519 Jesus would be ready to give him the keys to the kingdom. 00:15:34.519 --> 00:15:38.059 If only he would ask. 00:15:39.659 --> 00:15:41.439 And this man essentially is saying, 00:15:41.600 --> 00:15:43.419 can I just get some advice? 00:15:45.059 --> 00:15:46.019 Can I get some advice? 00:15:47.899 --> 00:15:50.199 So one sign that we're in spiritual danger 00:15:50.199 --> 00:15:51.679 is when we start seeing Jesus 00:15:51.679 --> 00:15:55.199 as merely a source of advice or wisdom, 00:15:55.699 --> 00:15:59.220 but we don't really feel any need for salvation, 00:15:59.500 --> 00:16:00.860 any need for mercy. 00:16:01.299 --> 00:16:02.419 So, you know, the question is, 00:16:02.720 --> 00:16:03.819 if you don't feel that, 00:16:03.820 --> 00:16:05.680 why would you even give someone like Jesus 00:16:05.680 --> 00:16:06.560 a second thought?
