Jesus from John chapter 10. 00:00:17.879 --> 00:00:31.500 And John tells us there about what happened when Jesus had a bit of a discussion, a conversation with the Pharisees after healing the man who had been born blind. 00:00:32.439 --> 00:00:38.599 Jesus has been speaking to the Pharisees using the metaphor of sheep and shepherding. 00:00:39.340 --> 00:00:46.320 And in a veiled sort of way, Jesus has likened the Pharisees to thieves and robbers. 00:00:46.320 --> 00:00:49.399 He's referred to them as strangers. 00:00:50.240 --> 00:00:55.299 He said that the sheep, the people of God, do not belong to them. 00:00:56.359 --> 00:00:58.960 Instead, they belong to the true shepherd. 00:00:59.759 --> 00:01:07.060 And Jesus has claimed and said, I am that shepherd, the true shepherd. 00:01:07.680 --> 00:01:11.560 And not just the true shepherd, but the good shepherd. 00:01:11.560 --> 00:01:20.299 The one who, unlike the Pharisees and the religious leaders, actually cares for his sheep deeply. 00:01:21.400 --> 00:01:27.980 Not for what they can give to him, but he desires to give to them and to bless them. 00:01:27.980 --> 00:01:38.240 In this particular analogy of shepherd and sheep that Jesus has been using, he's used every aspect of the illustration to make a point. 00:01:38.740 --> 00:01:47.000 He uses the pen, the sheep, the shepherd, the thieves and robbers, the 00:04:26.620 and I'm starting to feel hungry, no predators in sight, I'd rather be out. 00:04:27.480 --> 00:04:29.839 Go find some breakfast in the fields. 00:04:31.600 --> 00:04:35.699 Jesus manages to capture both of these realities in what he said. 00:04:36.980 --> 00:04:38.240 Let's start with the first. 00:04:38.240 --> 00:04:45.860 First, in the sheep fold is where you want to be when there's danger for protection. 00:04:47.180 --> 00:04:50.960 Jesus says, I am the gate for the sheep. 00:04:51.800 --> 00:04:55.620 Whoever enters through me will be saved. 00:04:56.639 --> 00:04:58.160 Let's translate that metaphor. 00:04:58.360 --> 00:05:03.860 If you want to get out of the danger you are in, says Jesus, you need to come to me. 00:05:04.120 --> 00:05:06.160 Not just to me, but through me. 00:05:06.160 --> 00:05:13.439 It's through me that you get out of the danger and into the safety of the sheep pen. 00:05:15.260 --> 00:05:19.420 Now probably some of the Pharisees 00:05:27.500 --> 00:05:30.660 Jesus hasn't said anything about any real danger. 00:05:30.660 --> 00:05:34.480 What do you mean? 00:05:38.120 --> 00:05:42.200 Jesus actually hasn't even talked about 00:05:47.360 What do we need to be saved from? 00:05:49.660 --> 00:05:53.620 Well, Jesus actually has very recently mentioned a kind of danger. 00:05:53.620 --> 00:05:58.939 If we go back just a few verses to the last verse of chapter 9. 00:05:59.660 --> 00:06:06.540 This is the last thing Jesus said to the Pharisees before he launched into this analogy with the sheep. 00:06:06.959 --> 00:06:12.259 He said to them, if you were blind, you would not be guilty of sin. 00:06:12.259 --> 00:06:17.779 But now that you claim you can see, your guilt remains. 00:06:19.399 --> 00:06:21.259 Your guilt remains. 00:06:22.860 --> 00:06:24.839 Let those words sink in a little bit. 00:06:25.800 --> 00:06:27.459 What is Jesus saying to them? 00:06:29.199 --> 00:06:33.240 He's saying to them, even though you think you are righteous, you Pharisees, 00:06:33.539 --> 00:06:34.939 you are not. 00:06:36.300 --> 00:06:37.379 You have guilt. 00:06:37.379 --> 00:06:40.459 You are guilty before God. 00:06:42.339 --> 00:06:47.240 In God's books, your name is not listed under the innocent column. 00:06:47.439 --> 00:06:49.959 It's listed under the guilty column. 00:06:50.500 --> 00:06:52.560 The deserving of punishment column. 00:06:55.040 --> 00:06:56.740 And this is not a new message. 00:06:57.100 --> 00:06:59.480 Or just a message for the Pharisees. 00:06:59.579 --> 00:07:04.199 In fact, Jesus has been saying this very kind of thing over and over again. 00:07:04.199 --> 00:07:07.539 To the Pharisees and to all the people. 00:07:08.199 --> 00:07:10.379 We could look back to chapter 8. 00:07:10.500 --> 00:07:13.099 I won't put the words up on the screen. 00:07:13.219 --> 00:07:15.920 But Jesus had a few things to say there that were very similar. 00:07:17.139 --> 00:07:19.279 He told the people, I am going away. 00:07:19.740 --> 00:07:21.039 And you will look for me. 00:07:21.680 --> 00:07:23.480 And you will die in your sin. 00:07:24.639 --> 00:07:27.839 He said, if you do not believe that I am he, 00:07:28.599 --> 00:07:31.919 you will indeed die in your sins. 00:07:31.920 --> 00:07:36.660 He also said, everyone who sins is a slave to sin. 00:07:37.580 --> 00:07:40.560 And a slave has no permanent place in the family. 00:07:42.060 --> 00:07:46.160 But if the son sets you free, you will be free indeed. 00:07:46.800 --> 00:07:49.540 These are all things Jesus said back in John chapter 8. 00:07:49.700 --> 00:07:52.340 And they all kind of point in the same direction. 00:07:53.900 --> 00:07:56.060 He's saying to the Pharisees and to the people, 00:07:56.060 --> 00:07:59.100 Yes, you are in real danger. 00:07:59.819 --> 00:08:01.399 Because of your sins. 00:08:02.120 --> 00:08:03.819 Because of your guilt. 00:08:03.959 --> 00:08:05.300 The danger. 00:09:29.019 --> 00:09:31.399 The Pharisees were in that day. 00:09:31.679 --> 00:09:32.839 All of us have need, 00:09:32.839 --> 00:09:34.459 to repent of our sins. 00:09:35.399 -->
