00:05:17.279 --> 00:05:21.439 Well, we're kind of hopping in midstream in Isaiah. 00:05:21.699 --> 00:05:30.059 But if you were to read this book from the beginning, you would encounter again and again this mysterious figure 00:05:30.059 --> 00:05:32.799 whom Isaiah calls the servant. 00:05:32.800 --> 00:05:38.560 He's the subject of four poems in Isaiah's book. 00:05:40.000 --> 00:05:43.699 And we have, Christians have traditionally called them the servant songs. 00:05:44.360 --> 00:05:50.379 And in the servant song in chapter 49, Isaiah tells us that the servant, this servant who's coming, 00:05:51.120 --> 00:05:58.100 will be called from his mother's womb, set apart from birth for a very specific task. 00:05:58.100 --> 00:06:03.000 God was going to use him to gather his people back to himself. 00:06:04.000 --> 00:06:07.960 God's people had repeatedly turned away from him. 00:06:08.020 --> 00:06:10.060 That's the backdrop of Isaiah. 00:06:10.500 --> 00:06:17.020 Though he had been steadfast in his love for them, they had over and over gone astray. 00:06:17.260 --> 00:06:19.600 Gone after other gods, after idols. 00:06:21.020 --> 00:06:25.420 And so, they had eventually been conquered by Babylon, taken into exile. 00:06:25.420 --> 00:06:27.860 Israel had to leave the promised land. 00:06:28.740 --> 00:06:33.220 But God was promising, even before it happened in the book of Isaiah, 00:06:33.340 --> 00:06:35.620 that God would gather them back to himself. 00:06:35.800 --> 00:06:37.840 That he would bring them home. 00:06:38.040 --> 00:06:40.560 And he would bring them back to himself through the servant. 00:06:41.700 --> 00:06:43.280 And not just that. 00:06:43.660 --> 00:06:47.400 He says in chapter 49, just bringing Israel to himself isn't enough. 00:06:47.480 --> 00:06:48.939 It's too small a task. 00:06:50.340 --> 00:06:53.040 Isaiah said that the servant would be a light for the nations. 00:06:53.040 --> 00:06:56.520 That God's salvation would reach to the ends of the earth. 00:06:57.439 --> 00:07:04.600 Those who had never even heard of the God of Israel would receive his love and come to know him as Savior. 00:07:05.400 --> 00:07:08.120 And the immediate question that raises is how. 00:07:09.700 --> 00:07:11.280 How will the servant do that? 00:07:12.020 --> 00:07:16.320 How will he gather God's people back to him and reveal salvation to the whole earth? 00:07:16.319 --> 00:07:18.659 Through military conquest? 00:07:19.040 --> 00:07:21.800 You could imagine the servant as a great warrior. 00:07:22.399 --> 00:07:23.379 Raising an army. 00:07:23.540 --> 00:07:25.120 Just marching across the earth. 00:07:25.259 --> 00:07:26.279 Saving God's people. 00:07:26.519 --> 00:07:29.279 And bringing good news to all of them. 00:07:30.959 --> 00:07:32.819 That would bring the people back to the land. 00:07:32.939 --> 00:07:35.379 But the people's greatest problem isn't geographic. 00:07:36.500 --> 00:07:38.879 It's not their physical exile from the land. 00:07:38.980 --> 00:07:41.300 It's their spiritual exile from God. 00:07:41.300 --> 00:07:50.139 If the servant is going to gather them back to God, he's going to have to do something about their hearts that always go astray. 00:07:51.439 --> 00:07:53.240 His work is going to need to go deeper. 00:07:53.360 --> 00:07:54.819 They don't just need to be brought home. 00:07:54.900 --> 00:07:57.519 They need to be healed of their wayward hearts. 00:07:57.900 --> 00:07:58.840 And so do the nations. 00:07:59.800 --> 00:08:00.759 And so do we. 00:08:02.560 --> 00:08:05.699 Isaiah tells us that the servant doesn't save through power. 00:08:05.860 --> 00:08:07.960 Not that kind of power anyway. 00:08:08.780 --> 00:08:09.720 How does he save? 00:08:09.720 --> 00:08:14.220 Well this passage starts off with a striking paradox. 00:08:14.440 --> 00:08:16.240 Look back at chapter 52 verse 13. 00:08:16.380 --> 00:08:16.660 He says, 00:08:17.200 --> 00:08:20.200 Behold, my servant shall act wisely. 00:08:20.780 --> 00:08:23.760 He shall be high and lifted up and shall be exalted. 00:08:23.940 --> 00:08:25.700 God said, my servant is going to succeed. 00:08:26.780 --> 00:08:28.140 He's going to triumph. 00:08:29.220 --> 00:08:30.380 He's going to be exalted. 00:08:30.640 --> 00:08:33.200 And we see the effect of his triumph in verse 15. 00:08:34.080 --> 00:08:36.920 So shall he sprinkle many nations. 00:08:36.919 --> 00:08:40.819 In the Bible, sprinkling is a way of making something holy. 00:08:41.519 --> 00:08:42.860 Of purifying it. 00:08:42.919 --> 00:08:43.599 Of cleansing it. 00:08:43.659 --> 00:08:45.419 Of setting it apart for God. 00:08:45.519 --> 00:08:47.659 Sometimes it's water that's used to sprinkle. 00:08:47.799 --> 00:08:48.459 Sometimes oil. 00:08:48.620 --> 00:08:49.979 Sometimes it's the blood of a sacrifice. 00:08:50.159 --> 00:08:53.699 But sprinkling sets something apart to belong to God. 00:08:53.700 --> 00:08:58.379 And Isaiah says, what the servant does is going to sprinkle the nations. 00:08:58.540 --> 00:08:59.640 He's going to set the nations. 00:08:59.759 --> 00:09:01.580 The nations will belong to God. 00:09:03.100 --> 00:09:05.259 And what he does will be so amazing. 00:09:05.740 --> 00:09:08.000 It's going to render world leaders speechless. 00:09:08.259 --> 00:09:11.800 He says, kings shall shut their mouths because of him. 00:09:11.799 --> 00:09:14.599 So what is this great success? 00:09:14.859 --> 00:09:15.719 What is this triumph? 00:09:15.899 --> 00:09:16.659 What has he done? 00:09:18.219 --> 00:09:19.339 Look at verse 14. 00:09:20.839 --> 00:09:30.299 As many were astonished at you, his appearance was so marred beyond human semblance and his form beyond that of the children of mankind. 00:09:30.659 --> 00:09:31.339 What has he done? 00:09:32.039 --> 00:09:33.299 What has he done to triumph? 00:09:33.299 --> 00:09:38.219 He's been beaten to the point that he is no longer recognizable. 00:09:39.000 --> 00:09:41.679 Not just as himself, but as a human. 00:09:43.959 --> 00:09:45.279 You see the paradox. 00:09:46.479 --> 00:09:49.839 The servant succeeds through failing. 00:09:50.279 --> 00:09:53.139 He succeeds, he triumphs through being defeated. 00:09:54.059 --> 00:09:56.159 He saves through suffering. 00:09:57.139 --> 00:09:58.779 That's what this passage is about. 00:09:58.779 --> 00:10:05.659 It's simultaneously one of the most sobering and one of the most magnificent passages in the whole Bible. 00:10:06.899 --> 00:10:09.939 It's quoted at least seven times in the New Testament. 00:10:10.159 --> 00:10:15.299 On the night before Jesus died, he said, Isaiah 53 explains what I'm about to do. 00:10:15.779 --> 00:10:17.179 He says, this is what's going to happen. 00:10:17.299 --> 00:10:20.000 And he was numbered with the transgressors. 00:10:20.379 --> 00:10:21.799 Isaiah 53 verse 12. 00:10:22.699 --> 00:10:27.600 If you understand what this passage is saying about Jesus, you will understand the heart of Christianity. 00:10:27.600 --> 00:10:40.879 And if you believe what this passage teaches about Jesus, you will have a personal assurance of the love of God and a fountain of joy that nothing in this world can touch. 00:10:42.320 --> 00:10:45.259 Isaiah highlights three facets of Jesus' suffering. 00:10:46.139 --> 00:10:53.200 He tells us that his suffering is submissive, it's substitutionary, and it's saving. 00:10:53.200 --> 00:10:54.200 Jesus' suffering. 00:10:54.200 --> 00:10:55.200 Jesus' suffering. 00:10:55.200 --> 00:10:55.280 Jesus' suffering. 00:10:55.700 --> 00:10:58.900 He suffers as a substitute, and he suffers to save. 00:10:59.000 --> 00:11:01.720 So first, he suffered submissively. 00:11:02.640 --> 00:11:05.780 Jesus' suffering was neither incidental nor accidental. 00:11:06.060 --> 00:11:11.020 It was central and willful and purposeful. 00:11:11.140 --> 00:11:15.440 It was the mission on which he had been sent, to which he submitted entirely. 00:11:15.440 --> 00:11:18.400 It's why he came to earth. 00:11:19.000 --> 00:11:22.800 Why he concealed his divine glory in human flesh. 00:11:22.880 --> 00:11:24.440 Look at chapter 53 verse 1. 00:11:25.140 --> 00:11:32.060 Who has believed what he has heard from us, and to whom has the arm of the Lord been revealed? 00:11:32.760 --> 00:11:35.740 The arm of the Lord is God's saving power. 00:11:35.860 --> 00:11:38.800 You can look back at chapter 52 verse 10. 00:11:38.799 --> 00:11:40.299 Isaiah says, 00:11:40.299 --> 00:11:49.859 The Lord has bared his holy arm before the eyes of all the nations, and all the ends of the earth shall see the salvation of our God. 00:11:50.079 --> 00:11:53.179 God rolls up his sleeves, as it were. 00:11:53.339 --> 00:11:54.479 He exposes his arm. 00:11:54.579 --> 00:11:57.299 He goes to work, and he saves his people. 00:11:58.359 --> 00:12:02.359 But the arm of the Lord isn't just God's power disconnected from himself. 00:12:02.519 --> 00:12:05.379 An arm isn't just an instrument you use. 00:12:05.379 --> 00:12:07.679 Your arm is part of yourself. 00:12:07.860 --> 00:12:11.279 Where the arm of the Lord is, the Lord is. 00:12:11.899 --> 00:12:16.240 The arm of the Lord is God present in power to save. 00:12:16.840 --> 00:12:22.700 And Isaiah tells us that God's arm, God's presence and saving power, is a person. 00:12:24.100 --> 00:12:24.960 The servant. 00:12:26.840 --> 00:12:27.460 And he asks, 00:12:27.700 --> 00:12:29.399 To whom has the arm of the Lord been revealed? 00:12:29.700 --> 00:12:30.980 Who has recognized him? 00:12:31.200 --> 00:12:33.000 And the implied answer is no one. 00:12:33.000 --> 00:12:39.700 Almost no one recognized that Jesus of Nazareth was God himself come near to save. 00:12:41.139 --> 00:12:45.340 Who would imagine that God would be born as an infant and have to grow up? 00:12:45.419 --> 00:12:46.059 Look at verse 2. 00:12:46.639 --> him. 00:14:07.579 --> 00:14:08.860 When they heard about his miracles, 00:14:09.039 --> 00:14:09.399 they said, 00:14:09.639 --> 00:14:11.000 isn't this the carpenter's son? 00:14:12.100 --> 00:14:13.980 How could he be anything special? 00:14:15.419 --> 00:14:17.799 Even his siblings didn't see who he was. 00:14:17.799 --> 00:14:20.459 He was God's saving power in human flesh, 00:14:20.799 --> 00:14:22.519 and he seemed to almost everyone 00:14:22.519 --> 00:14:24.179 like no big deal. 00:14:26.079 --> 00:14:29.579 Maybe he seems like no big deal to you. 00:14:30.539 --> 00:14:33.219 You know that he taught about religion and morals, 00:14:33.359 --> 00:14:35.959 but that may be of no interest to you. 00:14:36.039 --> 00:14:37.859 You know that he allegedly did some miracles, 00:14:38.120 --> 00:14:39.959 but there are lots of reports like that 00:14:39.959 --> 00:14:41.519 from the ancient world. 00:14:42.079 --> 00:14:43.439 What makes Jesus different 00:14:43.439 --> 00:14:45.740 from any other ancient religious teacher? 00:14:45.740 --> 00:14:49.480 Well, Jesus did something that no one else did. 00:14:50.560 --> 00:14:51.680 He came to die. 00:14:53.100 --> 00:14:55.080 He didn't just encounter rejection, 00:14:55.320 --> 00:14:56.899 he came to be rejected. 00:14:57.080 --> 00:14:59.039 He didn't just experience suffering, 00:14:59.340 --> 00:15:02.360 he came to suffer and die. 00:15:02.519 --> 00:15:03.299 Look at verse seven. 00:15:04.080 --> 00:15:06.240 He was oppressed and he was afflicted, 00:15:06.340 --> 00:15:07.919 yet he 00:15:33.299 --> 00:15:36.939 He doesn't open his mouth, fulfilling this. 00:15:38.299 --> 00:15:40.879 And that's not the only way Isaiah's prophecy 00:15:40.879 --> 00:15:42.359 was fulfilled in Jesus' death. 00:15:42.419 --> 00:15:45.359 If you are unsure what to make of Jesus, 00:15:46.459 --> 00:15:48.719 one of the things that you are going to have to decide 00:15:48.719 --> 00:15:51.359 is what to do with the fact that Isaiah predicted 00:15:51.359 --> 00:15:55.519 details of Jesus' death 700 years before his birth. 00:15:55.519 --> 00:15:57.439 Look at verse 8. 00:15:58.340 --> 00:16:01.340 By oppression and judgment, he was taken away. 00:16:02.579 --> 00:16:03.639 An unjust trial? 00:16:04.819 --> 00:16:05.179 Check. 00:16:06.139 --> 00:16:07.819 And as for his generation,
