00:03:16.000 --> 00:03:18.320 in his final week, he looked out upon the city 00:03:18.320 --> 00:03:20.360 and wept for her. 00:03:20.360 --> 00:03:24.680 And we talked about how Jesus Christ loves Edinburgh. 00:03:24.680 --> 00:03:26.920 He loves all cities. 00:03:26.920 --> 00:03:29.320 And we need a heart of compassion, 00:03:29.320 --> 00:03:31.640 like Christ's heart, for our great city 00:03:31.640 --> 00:03:33.760 if we're going to see a city-wide movement of the gospel. 00:03:33.760 --> 00:03:35.719 What is a city-wide movement of the gospel? 00:03:35.719 --> 00:03:38.000 A city-wide movement of the gospel, 00:03:38.000 --> 00:03:40.400 our vision statement, the beginning of it, 00:03:40.400 --> 00:03:45.000 is simply an intensification of the work of the Holy Spirit, 00:03:45.000 --> 00:03:47.920 where we see more and more people coming to faith in Christ, 00:03:47.920 --> 00:03:52.680 conversion, lives of prayer, and the multiplication 00:03:52.680 --> 00:03:56.120 of good works across the city, all because of an encounter 00:03:56.120 --> 00:03:57.120 with Jesus. 00:03:57.120 --> 00:03:59.000 So that's a city-wide movement of the gospel. 00:03:59.000 --> 00:04:02.040 And today, we turn to the idea that we 00:04:02.040 --> 00:04:04.280 exist to seek a city-wide movement of the gospel 00:04:04.280 --> 00:04:07.599 by helping people find and follow Jesus, 00:04:07.599 --> 00:04:10.240 the second aspect of our vision statement here. 00:04:10.240 --> 00:04:12.800 And so to see that, that comes from the Bible. 00:04:12.800 --> 00:04:16.360 One of the great passages is John 4. 00:04:16.360 --> 00:04:21.680 Every single person needs an encounter with Jesus Christ. 00:04:21.680 --> 00:04:23.560 There can be no city-wide movement of the gospel. 00:04:23.560 --> 00:04:25.879 There can be no conversion experience 00:04:25.879 --> 00:04:28.960 unless you have an encounter with Jesus Christ. 00:04:28.960 --> 00:04:31.199 And so every single human being needs 00:04:31.199 --> 00:04:32.519 to find and follow Jesus. 00:04:32.519 --> 00:04:35.879 And so that's exactly what happens here in John 4. 00:04:35.879 --> 00:04:38.800 This woman at the well has an encounter. 00:04:38.800 --> 00:04:40.360 She is encountered. 00:04:40.360 --> 00:04:42.960 And so we're going to actually look at that for two weeks. 00:04:42.960 --> 00:04:46.120 This week, what it means to find and follow Jesus. 00:04:46.120 --> 00:04:49.840 And then next week, think about the very end of the passage 00:04:49.840 --> 00:04:52.879 about what it means to help other people find and follow Jesus. 00:04:52.879 --> 00:04:54.120 So let's think about that together. 00:04:54.120 --> 00:04:59.080 Four things today, not three, but four. 00:04:59.080 --> 00:05:02.439 Jesus Christ came to find us. 00:05:02.439 --> 00:05:07.120 And we have a need to then find Him, secondly. 00:05:07.120 --> 00:05:09.959 Third, what it means to follow So let's think about that together. 00:05:18.759 --> 00:05:20.000 He came to find us. 00:05:20.000 --> 00:05:24.519 There's an encounter that happens here in John 4. 00:05:24.519 --> 00:05:26.399 Who did Jesus come to find? 00:05:26.399 --> 00:05:28.840 Who is this encounter for? 00:05:28.840 --> 00:05:32.680 So if you look down in chapter 4, verse 4, 00:05:32.680 --> 00:05:36.240 Jesus is traveling from Judea to Galilee, 00:05:36.240 --> 00:05:38.759 where He was born, where He lives. 00:05:38.759 --> 00:05:43.759 And to get there, He has to go straight through Samaria. 00:05:43.759 --> 00:05:45.759 You can go around by way of Jericho, 00:05:45.759 --> 00:05:48.040 but the most straight shot is to go right through Samaria. 00:05:48.040 --> 00:05:49.360 And so that's what He does. 00:05:49.360 --> 00:05:51.720 And it's very hot. 00:05:51.720 --> 00:05:52.840 It's an arid climate. 00:05:52.840 --> 00:05:53.680 He is tired. 00:05:53.680 --> 00:05:57.240 And in verse 5 and 6, it says that at 12 noon, high noon, 00:05:57.240 --> 00:06:00.920 He arrives in Sikhar in Samaria. 00:06:00.920 --> 00:06:03.360 And that's where Jacob's well from the Old Testament, 00:06:03.360 --> 00:06:04.759 from Genesis 48 is. 00:06:04.759 --> 00:06:08.120 Now, we are fairly confident that we know exactly where this 00:06:08.120 --> 00:06:09.279 took place still. 00:06:09.279 --> 00:06:10.959 The scholars, the archaeologists, 00:06:10.959 --> 00:06:13.240 we've never lost the sight of Jacob's well. 00:06:13.240 --> 00:06:16.240 It's always been known, passed down century after century. 00:06:16.240 --> 00:06:20.159 And so today, this well is inside a Greek Orthodox church, 00:06:20.159 --> 00:06:22.759 as these things often happen, in a little village called 00:06:22.759 --> 00:06:26.079 Ascar in the West Bank, down in the crypt. 00:06:26.079 --> 00:06:30.920 So it's now several levels below where people live today. 00:06:30.920 --> 00:06:33.759 And at this well, Jacob's well from the Old Testament, 00:06:33.759 --> 00:06:36.879 Jesus is there and a woman comes. 00:06:36.879 --> 00:06:38.800 She's unnamed, as is often the case, 00:06:38.800 --> 00:06:41.759 women in the gospels are often unnamed. 00:06:41.759 --> 00:06:46.920 And Jesus says to her in verse 7 and 8, give me a drink. 00:06:46.920 --> 00:06:49.480 And she is shocked by this command. 00:06:49.480 --> 00:06:51.120 Give me a drink. 00:06:51.120 --> 00:06:52.680 It's a request. 00:06:52.680 --> 00:06:53.639 And she's shocked by it. 00:06:53.639 --> 00:06:55.079 Now, you may know why. 00:06:55.079 --> 00:06:58.159 If you've been in church at all, if you're a believer today, 00:06:58.159 --> 00:06:59.879 you've heard John 4 preach probably. 00:06:59.879 --> 00:07:03.279 And you know some of the issues that are going on here. 00:07:03.279 --> 00:07:05.839 There is first, very clearly in the passage, 00:07:05.839 --> 00:07:10.000 a massive religious barrier between the woman and Jesus. 00:07:10.000 --> 00:07:16.000 And Jews would not eat, would not drink with Samaritans. 00:07:16.159 --> 00:07:18.759 That had been the case for about 400 years 00:07:18.759 --> 00:07:20.039 before Jesus was born. 00:07:20.039 --> 00:07:23.799 And in the Mishnah, which is a document that recounts 00:07:23.799 --> 00:07:25.759 some of the traditions that had developed 00:07:25.759 --> 00:07:27.199 between the Old Testament and the New Testament, 00:07:27.199 --> 00:07:31.479 the Mishnah says this about Samaritan women, actually. 00:07:31.480 --> 00:07:34.000 It says all daughters of Samaritans 00:07:34.000 --> 00:07:35.960 are unclean from their cradle. 00:07:37.040 --> 00:07:39.439 So there's no interaction. 00:07:39.439 --> 00:07:41.759 There's a sense that all Samaritans are defiled 00:07:41.759 --> 00:07:43.879 in some way, religiously unclean. 00:07:43.879 --> 00:07:45.600 And a few chapters later from this, 00:07:45.600 --> 00:07:48.640 in John 8, Jesus is called a Samaritan. 00:07:48.640 --> 00:07:49.840 So some of the people accuse him and say, 00:07:49.840 --> 00:07:51.160 you are a Samaritan. 00:07:51.160 --> 00:07:53.520 They're saying he is defiled, he's unclean. 00:07:53.520 --> 00:07:55.960 They say you are Samaritan and you have a demon. 00:07:55.960 --> 00:07:56.980 They say to him. 00:07:58.360 --> 00:08:00.240 So there's this religious barrier that takes place. 00:08:00.240 --> 00:08:01.800 Now if you look down at verse nine, 00:08:01.800 --> 00:08:04.040 it's very prominent though, 00:08:04.040 --> 00:08:06.879 slightly veiled in the ESV that we read from. 00:08:06.879 --> 00:08:09.079 In verse nine, there's this little parenthetical comment 00:08:09.079 --> 00:08:10.960 that John added that says, 00:08:10.960 --> 00:08:14.400 for Jews have no dealings with Samaritans. 00:08:14.400 --> 00:08:15.480 So he's just explaining to us, 00:08:15.480 --> 00:08:17.199 this is why this is such a shock. 00:08:17.199 --> 00:08:19.319 Jews have no dealings with Samaritans. 00:08:19.319 --> 00:08:22.480 But the Greek text there can also be translated 00:08:22.480 --> 00:08:24.519 something more literally like, 00:08:24.519 --> 00:08:28.439 Jews do not use the same dishes as Samaritans. 00:08:28.439 --> 00:08:31.399 So no dealings is actually an issue of kitchenware 00:08:31.399 --> 00:08:32.320 in the Greek text. 00:08:32.320 --> 00:08:36.080 And it says, Jews will not eat from the same utensils, 00:08:36.080 --> 00:08:39.159 buckets of water, dishes, cups, anything like that. 00:08:39.159 --> 00:08:40.200 And that was exactly the case. 00:08:40.200 --> 00:08:42.279 That's what John adds here. 00:08:42.279 --> 00:08:43.720 Meaning she is saying, 00:08:43.720 --> 00:08:46.440 John is telling us very literally in that moment, 00:08:46.440 --> 00:08:49.000 the shock is that they would drink from the same bucket. 00:08:49.000 --> 00:08:51.399 When Jesus says, can I have some water? 00:08:51.399 --> 00:08:53.480 No chance you're drinking from my bucket. 00:08:53.480 --> 00:08:55.279 That would be a ritual defilement, religious defilement. 00:08:55.279 --> 00:08:57.039 There's a huge religious barrier. 00:08:57.039 --> 00:08:59.879 Beyond that, the religious barrier 00:08:59.879 --> 00:09:02.360 stands on top of an ethnic barrier, 00:09:02.360 --> 00:09:04.480 a barrier of racism that had been built up 00:09:04.480 --> 00:09:07.519 for century and century between both people groups. 00:09:07.519 --> 00:09:10.000 And 700 years before this moment, 00:09:10.000 --> 00:09:13.959 Assyria had conquered the land that is called Samaria here. 00:09:14.879 --> 00:09:18.079 And when that took place, the Assyrians 00:09:18.079 --> 00:09:20.959 and all sorts of international people groups from all over, 00:09:20.959 --> 00:09:23.120 they all mixed and had children. 00:09:23.120 --> 00:09:26.199 And so the people of this time see Samaritans 00:09:26.200 --> 00:09:28.600 as defiled ethnically, 00:09:28.600 --> 00:09:30.160 because of how many different people groups 00:09:30.160 --> 00:09:33.440 are represented in the melting pod that became Samaria. 00:09:33.440 --> 00:09:35.480 There's a massive ethnic barrier. 00:09:35.480 --> 00:09:39.759 And even more, on top of all that, there's a gender barrier. 00:09:39.759 --> 00:09:42.320 And the gender barrier really comes out in verse 27 00:09:42.320 --> 00:09:44.759 when the disciples come back. 00:09:44.759 --> 00:09:47.600 And it says they couldn't believe that he was talking, 00:09:47.600 --> 00:09:50.879 not to a Samaritan, to a woman. 00:09:50.879 --> 00:09:52.360 And the commentators will tell you, 00:09:52.360 --> 00:09:54.360 if you read very widely on this, 00:09:54.360 --> 00:09:58.039 that normally women would come to the well every day, 00:09:58.039 --> 00:10:00.080 but they would come in the early morning 00:10:00.080 --> 00:10:01.039 or in the late evenings, 00:10:01.039 --> 00:10:03.960 never in the middle of the day, at the heat of the day. 00:10:03.960 --> 00:10:05.519 And when she comes, 00:10:05.519 --> 00:10:10.519 that means that she is isolated from her own people. 00:10:10.519 --> 00:10:12.879 It's not just that there's a Jewish Samaritan barrier, 00:10:12.879 --> 00:10:14.200 it's not just that there's a religious barrier, 00:10:14.200 --> 00:10:15.399 it's not just a gender barrier, 00:10:15.399 --> 00:10:18.680 it's that she actually is seen as defiled 00:10:18.680 --> 00:10:20.560 in some way by her own people. 00:10:20.560 --> 00:10:22.800 That's why she's showing up there in the middle of the day. 00:10:22.799 --> 00:10:25.240 She's alone in the world, 00:10:25.240 --> 00:10:26.919 at least from the other women 00:10:26.919 --> 00:10:28.519 that would have normally been at the well with her. 00:10:28.519 --> 00:10:31.439 And so the commentators will say, 00:10:31.439 --> 00:10:33.399 and we don't know this for sure, 00:10:33.399 --> 00:10:35.559 but that oftentimes that encounter at the well 00:10:35.559 --> 00:10:38.719 in the middle of the day might have been an encounter 00:10:38.719 --> 00:10:41.799 where prostitutes would often come to meet people. 00:10:41.799 --> 00:10:43.039 And so there's conjecture there, 00:10:43.039 --> 00:10:45.399 but there's also a guess that this is, 00:10:45.399 --> 00:10:47.839 whatever this is, this is scandal 00:10:47.839 --> 00:10:50.240 in the eyes of everybody that sees this. 00:10:50.240 --> 00:10:51.479 And so there's so many barriers, 00:10:51.480 --> 00:10:54.039 and Jesus breaks right through it without hesitation 00:10:54.039 --> 00:10:56.039 and just says, can we drink from the same bucket? 00:10:56.039 --> 00:10:57.759 Will you give me a drink? 00:10:57.759 --> 00:11:00.560 And the first thing we learn here, 00:11:00.560 --> 00:11:01.840 here's the first lesson, 00:11:01.840 --> 00:11:06.600 John four comes after John three, right? 00:11:06.600 --> 00:11:09.600 And if you don't take anything else away, there you go. 00:11:11.000 --> 00:11:15.279 That's actually very important because in John chapter three, 00:11:15.279 --> 00:11:17.800 Jesus had an encounter with a man named Nicodemus. 00:11:17.799 --> 00:11:22.599 And Nicodemus came not in the middle of the day, 00:11:22.599 --> 00:11:25.039 but in the middle of the night. 00:11:25.039 --> 00:11:28.039 And he was very religious, very Jewish, 00:11:28.039 --> 00:11:32.479 Jewish elite, aristocratic, wealthy, 00:11:32.479 --> 00:11:34.559 everything that the society wanted, 00:11:34.559 --> 00:11:39.559 privileged, a person of status, upright, a moral man, 00:11:40.120 --> 00:11:43.120 a man in fact, yeah, in this first century. 00:11:43.120 --> 00:11:46.719 And in this passage, he comes in the middle of the day 00:11:46.720 --> 00:11:50.120 to a poor, scandalous, isolated, lower class, 00:11:50.120 --> 00:11:52.840 racially separated, richly unclean person, 00:11:52.840 --> 00:11:54.680 a woman who he's not supposed to talk to 00:11:54.680 --> 00:11:56.759 in the middle of the day. 00:11:56.759 --> 00:11:59.360 And he says, Nicodemus, you need to be born again. 00:11:59.360 --> 00:12:01.840 And he says to her, give me a drink. 00:12:01.840 --> 00:12:05.960 And in both situations, what is so clear in the gospels, 00:12:05.960 --> 00:12:08.399 Nicodemus at night, this woman unnamed 00:12:08.399 --> 00:12:10.040 in the middle of the day, 00:12:10.040 --> 00:12:12.680 Jesus had all these scandalous encounters 00:12:12.680 --> 00:12:14.759 and what it tells you is that across every single one of them, 00:12:14.759 --> 00:12:19.000 nobody understood the extent of Jesus' ministry, 00:12:19.000 --> 00:12:21.799 that he came to be for everybody. 00:12:21.799 --> 00:12:24.639 He came for every type of person, 00:12:24.639 --> 00:12:27.480 from the most privileged to the lowest class, 00:12:27.480 --> 00:12:28.519 every type of person. 00:12:28.519 --> 00:12:30.399 And if you just, if you have a Bible, 00:12:30.399 --> 00:12:32.600 you can back up just one verse, 00:12:32.600 --> 00:12:34.639 chapter three, verse 36, 00:12:34.639 --> 00:12:37.240 where John the Baptist is defending Jesus 00:12:37.240 --> 00:12:40.080 against people who were wondering 00:12:40.080 --> 00:12:41.879 who the Messiah really was. 00:12:41.879 --> 00:12:44.639 And John the Baptist, right before this moment says, 00:12:44.639 --> 00:12:47.279 whoever believes in the sun has eternal life. 00:12:47.279 --> 00:12:48.120 And we pass by that, 00:12:48.120 --> 00:12:50.039 but you see the word whoever, 00:12:51.080 --> 00:12:53.960 whoever believes in the sun has eternal life. 00:12:53.960 --> 00:12:56.919 And then that sandwich between Nicodemus 00:12:56.919 --> 00:12:58.600 and the woman at the well. 00:12:58.600 --> 00:13:00.360 And that means we learned something very simple 00:13:00.360 --> 00:13:02.199 and we said this last week, 00:13:02.199 --> 00:13:05.919 Jesus Christ came for every type of human being, 00:13:05.919 --> 00:13:06.759 every single person. 00:13:06.759 --> 00:13:09.000 He loves Edinburgh more than we do, 00:13:09.960 --> 00:13:12.159 because he loves every single person 00:13:12.159 --> 00:13:13.399 and every single type of person. 00:13:13.399 --> 00:13:15.959 And when we realize that we are that 00:15:55.839 --> 00:15:59.079 You know, a pile of rocks with a hole 00:15:59.079 --> 00:16:01.199 and you look down at it, you throw coins, 00:16:01.199 --> 00:16:03.199 that kind of thing, that's one of the words. 00:16:03.199 --> 00:16:05.559 But the other word that's translated for well here 00:16:05.559 --> 00:16:10.559 is a word that can mean living water or something moving. 00:16:11.199 --> 00:16:14.839 And that's because at Jacob's well, there is the well, 00:16:14.839 --> 00:16:17.279 but then it goes down to an actual river 00:16:17.279 --> 00:16:19.439 that's underneath the ground, a stream. 00:16:19.439 --> 00:16:23.159 And when Jesus says I can offer you living water, 00:16:23.159 --> 00:16:25.439 he's talking about running water, very literally. 00:16:25.439 --> 00:16:27.359 He's taking the literal thing that's at the bottom 00:16:27.359 --> 00:16:29.919 of the well, which is a moving stream, 00:16:29.919 --> 00:16:32.839 and saying you don't need cistern water, 00:16:32.839 --> 00:16:34.599 you need living water. 00:16:34.600 --> 00:16:36.440 Now, the reason he's saying this is because 00:16:36.440 --> 00:16:38.600 it's all a metaphor, but it's all about something spiritual, 00:16:38.600 --> 00:16:39.440 right? 00:16:39.440 --> 00:16:40.600 And the reason that he's saying this 00:16:40.600 --> 00:16:42.680 is because when you would come to Jacob's well, 00:16:42.680 --> 00:16:45.040 or any other well in the first century, 00:16:46.000 --> 00:16:48.519 the water on top has been sitting. 00:16:49.399 --> 00:16:51.560 And so you don't want to drink the water, 00:16:51.560 --> 00:16:53.879 you don't just dip your bucket in and take from the top, 00:16:53.879 --> 00:16:55.519 no, it's stagnant. 00:16:56.399 --> 00:16:58.680 You've got to get means, that means this, 00:17:22.240 --> 00:17:24.279 that Jesus Christ is taking something 00:17:24.279 --> 00:17:26.039 in her physical experience and saying to her, 00:17:26.039 --> 00:17:29.200 look, I know that you're thirsty, 00:17:29.200 --> 00:17:31.319 but I also know that you're thirsty. 00:17:31.319 --> 00:17:34.079 In other words, Jesus is saying that at the bottom 00:17:34.079 --> 00:17:47.480 That's the metaphor he's talking about. 00:17:47.480 --> 00:17:50.720 He's saying that I can offer you soul satisfaction 00:17:50.720 --> 00:17:53.000 that you've yet to find in all of spiritual thirst quenched, satisfied. 00:18:14.519 --> 00:18:18.400 In Hebrews 11, there's a long list of names, 00:18:18.400 --> 00:18:21.640 heroes of the faith, people who believed well 00:18:21.640 --> 00:18:23.640 all throughout their lives, and at the very end of it, 00:18:23.640 --> 00:18:26.240 it says that the one thing they all had in common, 00:18:26.240 --> 00:18:29.519 Hebrews 11, was that they all longed, 00:18:29.519 --> 00:18:34.119 yearned for a better country. 00:18:34.119 --> 00:18:36.119 The one thing that it says all the heroes of the faith 00:18:36.119 --> 00:18:38.920 had in common was that they longed, 00:18:38.920 --> 00:18:43.920 thirsted for a better country than this one, than this life. 00:18:44.319 --> 00:18:47.960 And that's exactly what Jesus is talking about. 00:18:47.960 --> 00:18:52.039 C.S. Lewis in several of his books put it really well, 00:18:52.039 --> 00:18:54.759 in the weight of glory and surprised by joy 00:18:54.759 --> 00:18:58.160 and mere Christianity, he talked about this secret, 00:18:58.160 --> 00:19:00.000 he called it the secret. 00:19:00.000 --> 00:19:03.080 It's the thing that's deep down in the bottom of the soul, 00:19:03.080 --> 00:19:05.560 and it is an unsatisfied longing 00:19:05.560 --> 00:19:08.360 that every single human thirsts for. 00:19:08.360 --> 00:19:10.480 Have you ever been thirsty? 00:19:10.480 --> 00:19:12.160 Have you ever been really thirsty? 00:19:13.480 --> 00:19:16.080 And you know that when you're thirsty, 00:19:16.080 --> 00:19:18.519 there's water tastes really good, 00:19:18.519 --> 00:19:21.800 and when you're really thirsty, water is honey. 00:19:21.800 --> 00:19:24.840 You know, it is sweet to your lips. 00:19:24.839 --> 00:19:28.199 And Jesus is saying that there is a spiritual thirst 00:19:28.199 --> 00:19:30.240 deep down at the bottom of your heart 00:19:30.240 --> 00:19:35.240 that is so, so tired, arid, dry, longing 00:19:35.319 --> 00:19:37.720 for something that it's yet to find in this your revenge on it 00:19:48.159 --> 00:19:50.519 by calling it names like nostalgia, 00:19:51.399 --> 00:19:54.759 by calling it romanticism, by calling it adolescence. 00:19:54.759 --> 00:19:56.559 It's just for the kids. 00:19:56.559 --> 00:19:58.039 It's the longing for Narnia. 00:19:59.000 --> 00:20:02.519 And we put it away by calling it adolescence. 00:20:02.519 --> 00:20:05.519 And he says this, some of us, the more sophisticated, 00:20:05.519 --> 00:20:06.640 we call it beauty. 00:20:07.799 --> 00:20:09.759 And you look in books, you look in music, 00:20:09.759 --> 00:20:12.200 maybe you look in the most climactic moments 00:20:12.200 --> 00:20:13.640 of your favorite movies, 00:20:13.640 --> 00:20:16.400 and you look and say, that was beautiful. 00:20:16.400 --> 00:20:17.480 I loved that. 00:20:17.480 --> 00:20:19.879 That makes me want more. 00:20:19.879 --> 00:20:20.839 And this is what he writes, he says, 00:20:20.839 --> 00:20:23.599 the books of the music in which we created a longing. 00:20:32.399 --> 00:20:34.079 They are not the thing itself, 00:20:34.079 --> 00:20:37.759 they are only the secret of a flower 00:20:37.759 --> 00:20:39.319 that we have yet to --> 00:21:12.799 Zenzucht, to describe this, 00:21:12.799 --> 00:21:15.440 it came from German philosophy, Zenzucht. 00:21:15.440 --> 00:21:17.359 He said there's just not a word in English. 00:21:17.359 --> 00:21:21.839 And Zenzucht, it's something like inconsolable longing for life, 00:21:21.839 --> 00:21:24.599 inconsolable longing for life. 00:21:24.599 --> 00:21:27.839 And he said, our whole education, 00:21:27.839 --> 00:21:30.639 our whole lives has been directed to silencing 00:21:30.639 --> 00:21:32.559 this shy, persistent inner voice. 00:21:32.559 --> 00:21:34.639 Almost every modern philosophy 00:21:34.639 --> 00:21:36.479 has been devised to convince us 00:21:36.479 --> 00:21:39.079 that the good of humanity, the longings of humanity 00:21:39.079 --> 00:21:41.599 can be fulfilled in this life. 00:21:41.599 --> 00:21:44.719 And he just said, and they just can't, they just can't. 00:21:44.719 --> 00:21:46.439 And that's exactly what Jesus is talking about here. 00:21:46.440 --> 00:21:50.880 And so Ecclesiastes 311 is the background of this, 00:21:50.880 --> 00:21:55.759 where we read, God has set eternity upon the human heart. 00:21:55.759 --> 00:21:57.720 And Augustine's very famous line 00:21:57.720 --> 00:21:59.720 that we began the worship service with today, 00:21:59.720 --> 00:22:01.920 Peter Crave says, this is the greatest sentence 00:22:01.920 --> 00:22:04.400 ever written outside the Bible. 00:22:04.400 --> 00:22:05.600 Maybe that's true, I don't know. 00:22:05.600 --> 00:22:07.960 But he says, Augustine read this, 00:22:07.960 --> 00:22:10.960 because God, you have made us for yourself, 00:22:10.960 --> 00:22:14.600 our hearts are restless until they find rest in thee. 00:22:14.599 --> 00:22:17.519 See, that's the objective and the subjective. 00:22:17.519 --> 00:22:20.240 Objectively, because God, you made us, 00:22:20.240 --> 00:22:22.480 subjectively our hearts will be restless 00:22:22.480 --> 00:22:25.159 until they find rest in thee. 00:22:25.159 --> 00:22:28.039 It's both, that's what Jesus is teaching us here. 00:22:28.039 --> 00:22:31.279 Jesus can quench our thirsty souls thirdly. 00:22:31.279 --> 00:22:33.039 And really, this is the conclusion. 00:22:33.919 --> 00:22:35.839 How do you follow him? 00:22:35.839 --> 00:22:36.839 You see, that's the need. 00:22:36.839 --> 00:22:40.079 Every single person in our city needs to discover Jesus, 00:22:40.079 --> 00:22:42.159 needs to encounter Jesus, 00:22:42.159 --> 00:22:43.599 because the claim of Christianity 00:22:43.599 --> 00:22:45.199 is that only Jesus Christ, 00:22:45.199 --> 00:22:47.959 only the real God can objectively 00:22:47.959 --> 00:22:51.079 and subjectively quench the thirsty soul. 00:22:51.079 --> 00:22:52.159 That's the need we have, 00:22:52.159 --> 00:22:53.119 that's the need we have to seek 00:22:53.119 --> 00:22:55.399 a citywide movement of the gospel. 00:22:55.399 --> 00:22:56.759 So how do you follow him? 00:22:56.759 --> 00:23:01.759 Lastly, and Jesus here picks up on the theme, 00:23:02.919 --> 00:23:06.359 also Ecclesiastes three, also Jeremiah chapter two, 00:23:06.359 --> 00:23:09.079 verse 13, and Jeremiah and the prophet, 00:23:09.079 --> 00:23:12.480 God gives a condemnation of humanity, a judgment. 00:23:12.480 --> 00:23:14.279 And this is what he says, 00:23:14.279 --> 00:23:16.240 all of you are searching for living water, 00:23:16.240 --> 00:23:20.279 but you all dig your own well, your own cistern, 00:23:20.279 --> 00:23:24.000 and your cisterns are broken, and they cannot hold water. 00:23:24.000 --> 00:23:26.440 So God looks out upon humanity and says, 00:23:26.440 --> 00:23:29.880 that longing is there, that spiritual thirst you have, 00:23:29.880 --> 00:23:32.079 but you're digging your own well, 00:23:32.079 --> 00:23:33.720 looking for the wrong streams, 00:23:33.720 --> 00:23:36.120 and you've got zinzuped, 00:23:36.120 --> 00:23:38.319 you've got this inconsolable longing in your heart, 00:23:38.319 --> 00:23:40.799 and you're looking in the wrong places for it. 00:23:40.799 --> 00:23:42.519 And that means that he's saying here, 00:23:42.519 --> 00:23:45.079 Jesus is saying here, our hearts are sort of like buckets 00:23:45.079 --> 00:23:49.240 with a hole, and you keep trying to fill them up 00:23:49.240 --> 00:23:51.599 with a stream of living water that will keep you happy, 00:23:51.599 --> 00:23:54.599 joyous, but it's just a steady leak, 00:23:54.599 --> 00:23:56.480 it just comes out the bottom. 00:23:56.480 --> 00:23:59.000 And that's why in verse 10 he says, 00:23:59.000 --> 00:24:02.480 if only you knew to this woman, 00:24:02.480 --> 00:24:03.799 he says it to all of us today, 00:24:03.799 --> 00:24:06.440 if only you knew the gift of God. 00:24:08.240 --> 00:24:09.559 And one of the things he's saying in there 00:24:09.559 --> 00:24:12.119 is that the only way you can find your soul quenched 00:24:12.119 --> 00:24:16.720 from the thirst is that if you know it's not law, but gift. 00:24:18.119 --> 00:24:19.679 And you say every single one of us, 00:24:19.679 --> 00:24:24.359 we try to get this thirst quenched through law. 00:24:24.359 --> 00:24:26.359 You might not know it, but this is the human, 00:24:26.359 --> 00:24:27.639 this is what we do. 00:24:27.639 --> 00:24:29.119 And you can think about the first century, 00:24:29.119 --> 00:24:30.879 you can think about the 21st century, 00:24:30.879 --> 00:24:35.119 we all run from gift and try to get our satisfaction 00:24:35.119 --> 00:24:37.559 by way of law, behavior. 00:24:37.559 --> 00:24:40.839 And in the first century it was through ritual cleanliness, 00:24:40.839 --> 00:24:43.440 it was through observing the religious practices 00:24:43.440 --> 00:24:46.559 very steadily, in the 21st century it is productivity. 00:24:46.559 --> 00:24:50.399 It is achievement, it is busyness, 00:24:50.399 --> 00:24:52.759 it is trying to earn your path, it's all law. 00:24:52.759 --> 00:24:55.200 And Jesus says if only you knew it was a gift. 00:24:55.200 --> 00:24:58.679 And so in verse 16, he does something that's sort of 00:24:58.679 --> 00:25:02.919 shocking and which sort of seems out of place 00:25:02.919 --> 00:25:05.919 after saying it's all a gift, I can quench your thirst, 00:25:05.920 --> 00:25:08.279 it's all a gift, and then he says now, 00:25:08.279 --> 00:25:11.240 verse 16, go and call your husband. 00:25:12.840 --> 00:25:16.840 And you think, how does this fit the logic 00:25:16.840 --> 00:25:18.560 that Christ is building here? 00:25:18.560 --> 00:25:20.800 And it seems abrupt, but it actually does fit. 00:25:20.800 --> 00:25:25.240 And she says, you must be a prophet. 00:25:25.240 --> 00:25:26.680 He's son of God, he said, you know, 00:25:26.680 --> 00:25:29.880 I know that you've had five husbands, 00:25:29.880 --> 00:25:31.720 and the man that you're living with right now 00:25:31.720 --> 00:25:33.279 is not your husband. 00:25:33.279 --> 00:25:37.119 Jesus is trying to help her to see that what he offers, 00:25:37.119 --> 00:25:38.960 soul satisfaction is entirely a --> 00:26:24.400 So she's moving from man to man to man, 00:26:25.519 --> 00:26:26.879 looking for satisfaction, 00:26:26.879 --> 00:26:29.639 and he's saying you're not going to find it there. 00:26:29.640 --> 00:26:34.040 And men move from woman to woman to woman, 00:26:34.040 --> 00:26:36.680 and we chase sex, money, and power, 00:26:36.680 --> 00:26:39.280 and whatever it is that we move finally this will give me satisfaction, 00:26:46.560 --> 00:26:50.920 and the secret is that none of it is going to fulfill 00:26:50.920 --> 00:26:53.360 the eternal longing that's sitting at the lift up your eyes and know 00:30:06.960 --> 00:30:11.960 that the Lord of the universe came for the hour, the cross. 00:30:12.000 --> 00:30:15.440 He said, I am and I have come to die for you. 00:30:15.440 --> 00:30:19.559 And you see, the thirst that we need quenched is first, 00:30:19.559 --> 00:30:23.400 we need pardon, we need forgiveness 00:30:23.400 --> 00:30:24.920 because the
